A very special show this time as I present recordings from the Rathole Roadshow 2012 which took place on Friday May 11th @ LEAF, Liverpool. • 06:58 – P’Chenga – What’s The Difference? – License Unknown – Friends of mine and fellow Rathole Roadshow artists. I wanted to share a track of theirs. This is an old live recording that I know the lads aren’t massively happy with but it’s the best thing we have at the moment. They have a new drummer and will have new better recorded material soon.
• 11:17 – Secret Archives Of The Vatican – Blue Moons – CC BY-NC Licensed – A friend told me recently there wasn’t enough drum & bass in the show lately. This is a nod in their direction. Secret Archives Of The Vatican AKA Vince Millet is a giant in the CC music scene. Check out Broken Drum Records if you haven’t already.

• 22:38 – Dan Bull – Sharing Is Caring – CC Zero Licensed – UK protest rapper Dan Bull has released this latest single. You can hear a bit of Eminem influence in this Facebook track. Friend of the show Tim Dobson has been involved in promoting this and it’s an attempt to get a CC track into the UK charts. They’ve done 10 remixes and if you buy each one it counts towards the same chart entry. Madness. I suppose it does show how pointless the charts are these days ultimately.
• 26:34 – 20lb Sounds – Jimmy Carter – CC BY-SA Licensed – Whoops, how did this get in there? Just thought I’d remind you of this track in the build up to the Rathole Roadshow in Liverpool on Friday May 11th. FREE EP AVAILABLE.

• 34:54 – Electronic Ping Pong Orchestra – Eternal Hope – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – My good friend Bob and his project Electronic Ping Pong Orchestra. I like this bit of minimal electro and it’s off a CD he kindly gave me.
• 38:08 – Damscray – Saria Bride – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – An interesting bit of trip hop influenced music. I’ve played this artist before but I still don’t know a terrific amount about them.

46:00 – LIVE TRACK – “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out”. I’ve played this before but it’s a blues standard and I love it, so I figured I’d do it again.

• 51:10 – Ex-Friendly – Simply Bootieful – CC BY-NC-ND Licensed – A nice piece of laid back soul from Free Music Archive. It’s a bit long but it’s a great relaxed tune. Has a classic soul sound and I’m reminded of Al Green in parts by the vocal.

63:37 – Tenpenny Joke – Never Enough – CC BY-SA Licensed – This is actually 2 tracks by Aussie rockers Tenpenny Joke, I’ve played them before. The acoustic picking bit that’s mixed in at the end is listed as a separate track called Shadow In The Glass. You can get this on Jamendo and it’s from the album Ambush On All Sides which I recommend.

• 60:45 - GRENOUER – “Last Stop” - License Unknown – A great bit of metal from this Russian band. I got the EP Computer Crime via email recently and with that name I expected electro. I obviously missed the part where it said “metal greetings from Russia” though. They hail from St Petersburg and this EP has been picked up by Copro Records in the UK. It’s Rathole Radio 75 already and it feels like only yesterday the show started. We’re not quite over he hill yet you young whipper snappers. Get off our lawn! I played my usual eclectic mix of music, conjured the image of Sir David Attenborough naked (pass the mind bleach) and performed a live tune. A pretty regular show then. Hope you enjoy it.

• 00:00 – Black Bones – Rock N Roll- CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A cracker from Black Bones, the Italian pirate rockers I played recently. I liked the raw punk feel of this tune and it seems to be one of the few non-Pirate themed songs off their album Pirates Of The Coast.

• 06:49 – Symphony Of Science – The Greatest Show On Earth – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – I was reminded of this site by CCHits this week. I played “A Glorious Dawn” some time ago but there’s a whole collection of these tracks. They’ve taken recordings of popular scientists and auto-tuned them into songs. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but this is nicely done. Listen out for David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins.
• 10:08 – 108 Not – Katatonia – CC BY-ND Licensed – Suggestion from listener Daz Fuller. Russian alt-rock/metal band. Don’t know a lot more about them but it sounds good. From their self-titled album.

• 22:13 – L’Fabrik – On Arrose – CC BY Licensed – Some French rap for you. It’s been a while since I played any. No idea what they’re saying for the most part, it could be rdiculously offensive but hopefully not. Nice beats. Suggested to me by listener Simon Vass. Released 2009, on Jamendo.

• 29:37 – Paul and Storm – Live – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – I saw Paul & Storm live in Manchester supporting Jonathan Coulton. Apparently they wrote this tune during a challenge to write a song like JoCo. JonTheNiceGuy, creator of CCHits was sat next to me at that gig BTW.
• 33:15 – YACHT – Shangri-La (instrumental) – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – The opening track from the last CCHits weekly show and man it’s a cracker. Beautiful bit of instrumental music. It’s doing really well on CCHits and getting loads of votes.

A slightly overdue Rathole Radio this time. I missed the live show on Sunday unfortunately due to exhaustion, so I recorded this show offline instead. • 07:25 – Dumbo Get’s Mad – Marmalade Kids – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – Another track from CC netlabel Bad Panda Records, I’ve mentioned them a lot. This track is from the album Elephants At The Door released in Feb 2011.
• 11:41 – Zoe Mulford – Just Before I Go – License Unknown – Another one I heard via Graham Holland. I actually saw Zoe performing with Lorelei Loveridge at the View Two gallery in Liverpool back in 2010. It was one of Graham’s Liverpool Acoustic nights and I was really impressed.

• 19:20 – vvsmusic – Greensleeves – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – From Hamburg in Germany, VVS is a composer and arranger who makes music for films and much more besides. He’s also a software developer and designer. A multi-talented guy it seems. This arrangement of the well known classic Greensleeves is currently number 2 in the Jamendo top 100.
• 22:15 – Bobo In White Wooden Houses – I Wanna Keep You On My Side – License Unknown – Thanks to Moggers87 for this one. Another German artist, lots of those lately. The website has lots of pictures and other things but no real biog or info on the band that I can see. However, they sound great and I hope to find out more.

• 30:58 – Black Bones – Pirates Of The Coast – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – I have to thank my Linux Outlaws co-host Fab for bringing this to my attention. He got it via a listener who I think heard it via Dave & Caroline at The Bugcast. All very convoluted. Black Bones are a pirate metal band from Piacenza, Italy. This is the opening track off their album of the title. It’s available from Jamendo.
• 34:56 – Black Bones – We’ll Rise Again – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – The second track off the album Pirates Of The Coast but it leads in from the first one so I wanted to play it.

• 40:18 – felixjd – _make_believe_ – CC BY Licensed – A funky house track I picked up from Jamendo. It’s by an Italian artist who I can’t tell you a whole lot more about but it sounds good. They’re from Milan and there’s a stack of albums to dig through on Jamendo. I found a MySpace link but not much else. If you find out more let me know.

• 56:06 – William Michael Dillon – Black Robes & Lawyers – License Unknown – Heard this one via fellow Liverpool podcaster Graham Holland. A great track and it’s good to play some blues again. Read Dillon’s story from his site, wrongly imprisoned for 27 years he was cleared by DNA evidence in 2008. Now he makes music and campaigns against injustice.

• 07:05 – Songs Of Trees – Can I Say – License Unknown – This is taken from the Sounds Unique website. Sounds Unique is primarily the alter-ego of Kevin Osborne. He sent this via Soundcloud and I contacted him for permission to play it. There’s a videoforitonYouTube. You can get his music on iTunes and a variety of other places.
• 08:53 – MKMN99 – Dwell In Darkness (VIP) – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A slice of Dubstep courtesy of Pete Cogle from PC Podcast and his nose for fine music. I heard this on AMPed via him. The track comes from an EP In Dub We Trust released on netlabel EPHEDRINA. It’s free to download, though you do have to enter your email address. A small price to pay. Go and get it!

• 17:10 – Hannah Hart – Oh Internet – All Rights Reserved - A track I was tipped off to by my Linux Outlaws co-host Fabian Scherschel. Lovely tune and funny lyrics. There’s also an amazing video for this on YouTube. Hannah intended this to be an anti-SOPA song but it morphed into something more.
• 20:18 – Mutate Now – A Is For Atom (Einstein’s Theory Mix) – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – This was an artist submission through Soundcloud. Mutate Now are from Blehlow in Germany. The Geiger counter made me think of Kraftwerk and there’s an obvious German connection but the beat is definitely not Kraftwerk, far more industrial.

• 28:26 – Hazernomical – Love Me Notts – CC BY-SA Licensed – A rapper from Queens, New York I found via Jamendo. He’s riding high in the Jamendo rap section right now and I liked this song a lot. Nice groove. Even if I’m not sure about the lyrics. You can download the album free from Jamendo and it’s all CC goodness.
• 31:18 – Shambles Miller – For The Would-Be Woody Guthrie – CC BY Licensed – Can’t remember how I stumbled across this Scottish singer-songwriter but I suspect @Kevie may be involved again. Love this song. He has a great voice and an interesting sense of humour.

39:28 – LIVE TRACK – “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley. I ended up learning this on Valentine’s Day earlier this week. Perhaps it was some sort of subversive measure.

• 45:06 – Mad Mav – Psycologic Warfare – CC BY-NC-ND Licensed – This is a bit of German instrumental metal with almost classical piano at times. I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first but it really grew on me. The band are from Munich and this is off the EP Catch The Bullet, which you can find on Jamendo.

• 57:55 – Abscent Feet – Poor Joe – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – Another suggestion from @kevie, he’s on form this week. Abscent Feet are an Italian indie band from Rome and this track stood out from their EP for me. You can find them on MySpace. Their EP was released on Jamendo just last week.

• 00:00 – Jonathan Coulton – Skullcrusher Mountain – CC BY-NC Licensed – Do I need to say anything about Jonathan Coulton at this point? A CC music legend. I realised this week that I’ve only ever played 2 songs of his on the show. Have to get some more in.

• 07:38 – DubTrak – Sandblaster Dub - CC BY-NC Licensed – A group I discovered through CCHits and then investigated more. I got their EP off the Audiocast Productions netlabel.
• 14:03 – The Corinthians – The Hot One (Feat Nicky Talent) - License Unknown – A local Liverpool group I saw supporting the Jungle Brothers last year and loved it. I had a chat to Nicky Talent at the gig and they’re really nice lads. Fingers crossed I can get them on the line up for the Rathole Roadshow at LEAF on Friday May 11th.

There’s also a 20lb Sounds gig at The Zanzibar in Liverpool, Saturday Feb 4th at about 8pm. Stage time not known yet. Entry is only 4 quid, bargain.

• 21:25 – laslow1988 – Violin High – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – Interesting mix of classical and rock from this German outfit. This is from the album Panic Attack. They’re based in Berlin but there’s not a lot of other information on Jamendo. I tracked them down on Last.fm and some other places.
• 24:49 – airtone – something – CC BY-NC Licensed – Heard this on CCHits and absolutely loved it. Can’t find any information about the artist or the track after searching. The artist website just doesn’t load for me. Will try to find out more. There’s lots of stuff on ccMixter by airtone.

• 33:30 - Monkeys In Love – Traffic Or Not - License Unknown – I met Laura and her partner at an arts event in Liverpool last year. They’re based in Manchester and this is a pre-release track from their upcoming album Death Jeans. It’s due out on Feb 20th on Valentine Records. There’ll be a lunch party/gig on Feb 17th but I don’t have more details of that yet.

• 41:05 – Berlinist – My Darling Grace – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A Barcelona based trio who released this debut single on Bad Panda records last year. Not must is known about them. As it says on their Bad Panda release, “they prefer to let their piano, glockenspiel, accordion and ukulele speak”.

47:53 - LIVE TRACK: “Re: Your Brains” by Jonathan Coulton – My first attempt at performing a JoCo song and it went ok I think. It’s a zombie classic and hopefully I did it justice. Here’s the site I used to learn it.

• 54:15 – New Nobility – Paradise – License Unknown – Artist Submission – Sent to me via Soundcloud by the artist. I’ve played them before. Really like this track. Nice upbeat electro sounds I thought. These guys describe themselves as an International band, after forming in Sarajevo in 2005 they’re now based in Sydney, Australia.

Brian Fitzhugh wrote to me this week with a suggestion for a shared Google spreadsheet of all the tracks played on the show previously. He kindly offered to collate all the data and set something up which is amazing. He’s not a confident coder though. If anyone is interested in helping out contact me and I’ll put you in touch with Brian.

• 63:18 – La Olla Express – La Batalla – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A Spanish ska/punk/fusion outfit. Their album Panic came up in my search and I’m glad it did. It’s great! This is the opening track. Do yourself a favour and check them out. Their website is in Spanish and my Spanish is non-existent so you’ll have to investigate more yourself.

The song is a great example of the energy exhibited by the band during their live performances. This Denton, Texas based group can found playing the stage almost every Monday at Dan’s Silverleaf.” Rich describes their style as “Skunkgrass”, not a term I’ve heard, in this context at least. – From Audio Gumshoe
