Auction site eBay has backed down after banning the sale of a rare Dad’s Army board game for promoting “hatred” and “racial intolerance”.

The game, originally released in the mid-70s at the height of the much-loved TV series’ popularity, was deemed “offensive” because it contains a picture of a swastika.

Just like the opening title sequence of the show, the board game box depicts arrows bearing swastikas and Union Jack flags moving across a map of Europe.

Seller Dave Davidson, who bought the game at a car boot sale, was amazed when eBay removed his item from the site.

He told the Worcester News: “I want to expose eBay for what they are – a laughing stock.

“They allow coins and stamps with swastikas and there are hundreds of novels which are war stories that have them.

“It’s ridiculous that they can’t use any common sense. Dad’s Army is the most harmless TV programme in the world.

“There’s no swearing in it or anything.”

Mr Davidson, from Droitwich, Worcs, discovered his item had been removed from the site last Saturday when he received an e-mail from eBay.

He told the paper it explained that his listing breached the company’s offensive material policy.

It said: “We don’t allow sellers on eBay to list items that promote violence, hatred, racial or religious intolerance, or items from organisations that promote these views.

“We don’t allow items or memorabilia associated with the Nazi Party.”

However, the site has now said it will allow him to sell the game but Mr Davidson has decided to hang on to it.

“It’s very kind of them to change their minds but I don’t want to sell it now.

“I think I’ll keep it as a souvenir to political correctness gone mad.”

Screened between 1968 and 1977, Dad’s Army related the adventures of a hapless Home Guard unit during the Second World War.

It spawned catchphrases including “Don’t panic”, “They don’t like it up ‘em”, “You stupid boy” and, from the theme tune, “Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler?”

The couple have now sought Plant variety protection so that no one else can sell the seeds. With several more contenders elsewhere, the chilli world is all heated up but the cognoscenti say that despite similar-sounding names, the Indian one is the original hottie and should get the recognition. So India’s defence research laboratory has reason to smile as they were the first to ‘discover’ this Naga warrior in Tezpur in 2000, the same year Japanese scientists writing in Current Science also noted its potential as a riot control agent! The lovers had little mishap during there affair which involved a boss and his secretary who saw their romantic rendezvous interrupted in a wince-inducing way – after a car crash led the secretary to accidentally bite off her lovers penis.

According to reports in China Press and Sin Chew Daily, the 30-year-old secretary was performing oral sex on her love affair boss in there car inside Singapore park, when the car was struck by a reversing van.

The impact of which caused her to bite the man’s penis off.

To make thing worse for the couple that wasn’t already bad enough for those involved, the incident was watched by a private detective who had been sent by the woman’s husband to catch them out.

He described how, shortly after parking, the car started to ‘shake violently’ – but then was hit by the van. He said that the woman screamed loudly, with her mouth covered in blood.

Good-naturedly, the investigator called an ambulance to take the man to hospital. His lover followed him there, with part of his penis.

The investigator said he’s never seen an incident like it before.

In nature, influenza viruses circulate continuously among animals. Even though such viruses might theoretically develop into pandemic viruses, in

Phase 1 no viruses circulating among animals have been reported to cause infections in humans.

In Phase 2 an animal influenza virus circulating among domesticated or wild animals is known to have caused infection in humans, and is therefore considered a potential pandemic threat.

In Phase 3, an animal or human-animal influenza virus has caused sporadic cases or small clusters of disease in people, but has not resulted in human-to-human transmission sufficient to sustain community-level outbreaks. Limited human-to-human transmission may occur under some circumstances, for example, when there is close contact between an infected person and an unprotected caregiver. However, limited transmission under such restricted circumstances does not indicate that the virus has gained the level of transmissibility among humans necessary to cause a pandemic.

Phase 4 is characterised by verified human-to-human transmission of an animal or human-animal influenza virus able to cause “community-level outbreaks.” The ability to cause sustained disease outbreaks in a community marks a significant upwards shift in the risk for a pandemic. Any country that suspects or has verified such an event should urgently consult with WHO so that the situation can be jointly assessed and a decision made by the affected country if implementation of a rapid pandemic containment operation is warranted. Phase 4 indicates a significant increase in risk of a pandemic but does not necessarily mean that a pandemic is a forgone conclusion.

Phase 5 is characterised by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalise the organisation, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short 

Phase 6, the pandemic phase, is characterised by community level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region in addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5. Designation of this phase will indicate that a global pandemic is under way.

During the post-peak period, pandemic disease levels in most countries with adequate surveillance will have dropped below peak observed levels. The post-peak period signifies that pandemic activity appears to be decreasing; however, it is uncertain if additional waves will occur and countries will need to be prepared for a second wave.

Previous pandemics have been characterised by waves of activity spread over months. Once the level of disease activity drops, a critical communications task will be to balance this information with the possibility of another wave. Pandemic waves can be separated by months and an immediate “at-ease” signal may be premature.

In the post-pandemic period, influenza disease activity will have returned to levels normally seen for seasonal influenza. It is expected that the pandemic virus will behave as a seasonal influenza virus. At this stage, it is important to maintain surveillance and update pandemic preparedness and response plans accordingly. An intensive phase of recovery and evaluation may be required
