Charitweet is an idea I came up with one night which came from the simple thought:

If people were charged 1AED for each tweet, would they tweet as much?

Then after a bit of thinking and good will, I came up with:

For every tweet I write in March, I will donate 1AED to charity.

Pretty simple, practical, and cool IMO.

So, what does this have to do with me?

You can do it with me! Doesn’t matter when you start, just do it for a month or week.

My currency isn’t AED..

Set a certain amount that won’t burn a huge hole in your pocket. It all helps eventually.

To which charity though?

Any trusted local/global charity will do. Either record how many tweets as you post them then donate the money at the end of the month or do it daily.

Just tweet something saying that you’re gonna do it with a link to this post if you want. Oh, and don’t forget to add the hashtag – #charitweet.

Do you want to transfer this feed to FeedBurner? It’s simple, just follow these four easy steps:

1. Go To Your RSS Feed
   Go to your Twitter profile and scroll down to the end of the right column and you’ll see a RSS icon. Click it and copy the page address (or right click the link without clicking and copy). It should be something like this http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/15391375.rss
2. Login to FeedBurner/Register
3. Add your username and password to the URL
   You need to change the http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/15391375.rss to http://username:password@twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/15391375.rss

See, it’s that simple. Now you have your feed and you can do whatever with it. Submit to an RSS directory, use it on your blog etc.

So Apple announced its new tablet coined as the “iPad.” As usual Steve Jobs gets on stage with the same sweater and jeans, talks then demos the thing then the other guy comes up and so on. So I decided I’ll post some thoughts of mine after all the hype wears off a bit.

By the way, I’m not buying this thing but if you wanna send me one for free my hands are open

On to the thoughts..

I really dislike the name. Apple, you had choices and you picked the worst one! You had iStale, iTablet, iBook, but you picked iPad?! When you’re skimming through headlines, you can easily mistake it for ‘iPod’. Oh and what of the period jokes! They’ll just never end.

Why would I want to use this thing anyway? Steve Jobs said its between the smartphone and the laptop, I just see it as an iPhone with a different interface. I just can’t stress this enough! The iPhone can do everything it does plus take pictures and videos. So can laptops, and they’re just as portable. On the other hand, it can act as a backup. Now I’m not the kind of guy that moves around a lot but if you are, you might actually benefit from its 10hr battery life. I’m not saying the thing sucks, I just don’t see where it fits.

Hold on.. What made the iPhone so ‘WOW!’? The touchscreen, it was something no one had ever seen before. The scrolling, the pinching, the accelormeter, the large screen etc. Why didn’t Apple do something different with the iPad? Why is it running iPhone OS? Why not OS X if it’s ‘like a laptop’? Or even better, why not its own OS? Something like Microsoft’s Surface PC would’ve been cool. Just think about it, playing around with stuff like that; it would’ve been a whole new experience! People would’ve gone crazy because of all the hype, and Apple wins again. Should’ve been, could’ve been, would’ve been, but wasn’t.

Oh and why the with or without 3G option? This is just like the 4GB iPhone, it’s going to be discontinued.

Flash on the iPad is a biggie. Why no Flash? You want the ‘best browsing experience’? You gotta have flash. Save it Steve, a computer browser holds that spot. End of story.

So let’s get to the point..
Why?

It’s simple, Twitter is bigger, better, faster, stronger. Now let’s take this point by point:

• Twitter is bigger:
  You know that saying “If you build, they will come”? Yeah well, you don’t need to build much on Twitter. There’s an audience already, with little risk of losing them. All you really have to do is just make a bit of noise and you’ve got some followers. Interact with people, more followers. Wait, if you follow me and I don’t tweet much or tweet occasionally, are you going to monitor me and unfollow me in a week or two? Highly unlikely I believe. On the other hand, you have to build your blog to get traffic (I’m not too good at that), visitors and even build more to get loyal readers and even more to keep them! Would you buy an old beat-up car for $1,000,000 or a nice shiny Ferrari for $100? It’s no-brainer.
• Twitter is better:
  How many celebrities have blogs? Not many. How many have Twitter profiles? A lot. That says something and not that we should all tweet because that’s what the celebs are doing. They joined because it’s they can reach people and interact (or they’re manager suggested it and they agreed), how are they supposed to do that with a blog? They can inform with a blog, but not really reach. As for us normal people, we can interact, share, and connect with people (not necessarily people we know) using Twitter. If you fail with Twitter, you can always talk to the bots.
• Twitter is faster:
  I could’ve tweeted the main idea of this post in no more than a minute. I’ve spent more than a minute writing this post. Twitter is simply faster. Do you want me to spoon-feed it to you?
• Twitter is stronger:
  Which would you rather read, a 140 character message or a 2 page post about a single thought? The tweet gets you thinking, the post just tells you and might get you thinking just a little bit. Although feedback on Twitter isn’t that as great. I usually have tons to say about something. Let’s just put it this way, syrup in little cup has more flavor than the same amount of syrup in a jar.

Now I bet you’re thinking “Why is this in a blog if he says tweeting is better?”, am I right? Of course I am. Now blogs are of course better in their own way. If I were to tweet this it would a little something like this:

Tweeting is better than blogging, it’s just much faster to get quick thoughts across!

Different than this post huh? Blogging is more detailed, depends on the writer really. I’m not trying to pick at blogs or the blogging world but Twitter is a ‘micro-blogging platform’ (cool name they gave it, isn’t it?). Which means they both connect somehow. It’s all under this big tree called ‘Freedom of Speech’. Again, going back to the name, micro-blogging- mini-blog. Like everything nowadays, smaller = better.
