Picture it: Christmas! 2010! From the bowels of the Taskerlands Radiophonic Workshop comes a rarity: a radio special that's so special, it can bring the world together. It unites warring nations via the gift of laughter. It ends hunger, cures various cancers and colonises Mars. Global warming immediately depletes, polar ice caps re-freeze and the hole in the ozone layer - if that still exists, even - closes up. For 80 glorious minutes of mirth, the world unites and listens to what is arguably the greatest christmas special that sounds like an old radio broadcast from the 40s that has ever been produced by two blokes called Paul and Spike. In West Virginia. In the fall of 2010.

As you can imagine, competition was stiff for that particular award. Ahem.

OK, so this isn't just a lazy repeat of last year's critically lauded special. I mean, that would be too easy. No, this is a newly edited version; running at a svelte 60 minutes (or one metric hour), the special now zips along at a steady pace, with all the unnecessary padding stripped out. All this means that even though there might be less world uniting, hunger-ending, environment preserving, ozone layer-repairing going on, it *does* give you more time to get the rest of your shopping done.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! What makes it wonderful? Taking time off work, of course! But don't worry, there's still a festive smell in the air with this, the special director's cut of the 2008 Christmas Special. Why is it the director's cut? Well, there is approximately five whole podcast-exclusive minutes of new material crowbarred in instead of including the costly music that used to be there, it's in living stereo, and also because....

#503 - Satirist Matt Owen / Film Location Pilgrimages

This week's guest is Matt Owen, writer for "The Joan Rivers Position", satirical magazine Private Eye, that Channel Four sweatshop known as "The 11 O'Clock Show" (which featured both Sacha Baron-Cohen, Ricky Gervaise at the start of their careers, and a fresh-faced Charlie Brooker), plus innumerable birthday cards - some of which had tenners in.

Another great show for aficionados of British comedy and for anyone who has ever thought about writing comedy. Do Americans process comedy in a different way than Brits? What makes some British shows work across the pond, but others fall flat? Why do American sit-coms have better character development than their British counterparts? These and other comedy conundrums addressed head-on, in addition to an update on who started the second world war, whether Stephen Fry needs any more money, and what makes acceptable subjects for comedy.

The question for next week's show: The 70s had several instances of sit-coms being made into films, what modern (or past) sit-coms would you like to see get the theatrical treatment?

#500 - Season Five Pre-Premiere

And so, as we begin the beginning of season five of Too Grumpy Critics, we do so with just one very small and minor change; 50% of the cast is missing. o_O Paul has decided to extend his vacation from the show, so - hopefully - he'll be back at some point. So in order to make up the smart quotient of the show, here's how it's going to work for the next few weeks: I'll be rotating guest co-hosts of interest who will discuss their week in stuff, answer and comb through the correspondence from the previous weeks' question, and to set their own question for the next week's guest.

This week, being the pre-premiere, we refresh our memories with an edited recap of the last show, and also hear a clip from 2009's appearance from Mike Kazybrid and Andrew Wooding, otherwise known as Two Men and a Ghost, who will be joining us in two weeks' time. Next week, though, Scottish radio legend and member of the Sony radio academy John Collins will drop in to tell us exactly why he thinks live and local radio *isn't* doomned. Good luck, John!

This isn't down to drink, it's down to a weird bandwidth issue that meant there was a gap of roughly three seconds between one saying something and the other hearing it. Because the show is recorded on Spike's side, Paul is the one that sounds slow.

Also, a third week of cartoon violence and - this time - some freshly restored racism with the "Tom and Jerry" DVD set. C'mon chile!

0:08:27 - Spike's moving house, so there's little time to watch any Stuff. He finally got his grubby mitts on an entirely legal copy of the US "Life On Mars". Be warned, there's a spoiler alert for the UK spin-off "Ashes To Ashes". Not that it matters, given how good it wasn't. Imagine, though. History on The History Channel, in the shape of "American Pickers"!

0:24:50 - Next week's topic is revealed - what movies or scenes in movies always bring a lump to your throat. In other words, what are the great weepies, or the so-called weepies that leave you cold?

A surprisingly good review for the remake of "The Karate Kid", some top-shelf geekery with the season two bluray of "Star Trek" and there are more laughs per metric tonne in Mark Twain's autobiography than there are in any book Sarah Palin has pretended to write.

The Old Spike-recommended "The Draughtsman's Contract" seems to fall somewhat flat, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" raises a few eyebrows, there's post-apocalyptic fun with the movie adaptation of "The Road", post-turning-into-a-bug fun with Kafka's "Metamorphosis" and a surprising album that has made it's way into Pablo's top albums of all time...

0:28:50 - Poor Spike's been without a DVR and been made a captive audience to basic cable, which lead him to watch an entire day of Animal Planet's Cops-like "Animal Cops". Probably not, because P&S turn quickly to a drinks update, and the secret to Paul's award-winning margarita becomes drunkenly clear, as does the effect it has on Spike.

0:17:00 - An unmemorable festive season in Stuff for Paul, albeit one filled with blood, guts and war; including "The Thin Red Line", "Hamburger Hill" and not necessarily including a rewatch (and analysis) of "Apocalypse Now" on Bluray. Other Blurayage includes pickage uppage of "The Fifth Element", "V For Vendetta", "Role Models", and "The Mummy", and Paul "the white IT nerd" has a newfound respect for Eminem, thanks to Popbunker.

At the start of the December, we asked you - the commentariat - to send us five of your favourite Christmas songs, and three Christmas songs you can't bloody abide; the idea being that someone else's hated three could knock out three fifths of another person's favourite, leaving us with a list of songs that either everyone could agree on, or that hardly anyone liked. Or something. This, then, is that final list. A two hour music spectacular featuring your festive favourites!

....except, being stuffed to the gills with copyrighted music, we can't actually bring you the show in its entirety. What we *can* do is send you everything BUT the music! So in this 45 minute show, you'll hear not only the commentariat's musical choices and why they picked them, you'll hear a deleted scene from this year's Paul&Spike Christmas Special, what two decades of present wrapping does to vinyl, and the Chipmunk's real voices.

0:08:40 - On Jij's travels, she took in some "Salt", which she gives "meh" pew-pew-pews out of ten. High marks for "Dispicable Me", though, in spite of its stars. Jij sets Paul some homework, at least three episodes of the Disney Channel's excellent "Phineas and Ferb". This leads on to a discussion about why (Dr. William H.) Bill Cosby (junior) is in the credits to "Little Bill", why "Sesame Street" speeded up instead of slowing down, and a clown reading erotic literature to kids. Oh, and that word they can't use? Segmental entertainment for the Paulster, taking in two and a half movies; "Die Hard", "Time After Time", and "Twelve Monkeys", which just so happens to be the next pick for the Too Grumpy Movie Club in two weeks' time - details below.

0:00:00 - Stupid names aside, there's a not-a-drinks-update regarding Paul's margarita mix. Spike is missing the essential ingredient, "plinketty plonk". Paul is sheepishly holding up Kentucky's alcoholic output, although that may change after the results of the election.

0:03:25 - By the description in Paul's Week In Stuff, it sounds like the "Back To The Future" Bluray boxset might be a good reason to upgrade from the DVDs. Shame about ZZ Top, though. Paul's yearly tradition of watching the original "Halloween" rounds out his week in Bluray, and finds out what film-making technique links John Carpenter to former Too Grumpy Movie Club pick "After Hours". Also, the long-awaited answer to that historical conundrum is finally made public via a viewing of "Agora", which is, of course; "did Greek mathematical scholar Hypatia have a nice backside?"

0:09:38 - Following a viewing of the trailer of the Cohen Brothers not-a-remake of "True Grit", Paul's Week In Stuff includes the original. What can be said about "The Cabinet Of Doctor Caligari"? Plenty - but, because it's a silent movie, it all has to be said with facial expressions.

0:22:35 - Spike's Week In Stuff demonstrates how Twitter is the new playground, with a re-telling of the unbelievable documentary "Madness In The Fast Lane", and why the whole of Britain was talking about how terrifying Robert Carlyle was in "Cracker". Good news, Dr Who fans! Spike's watching of the glum political intrigue-laden story "The Seeds Of Doom" has lead to it being released on DVD!

#310 - Do Some Movies Go Stale?

0:00:00 - It's pelters for Spike and his cheap-ass taste in alcoholic beverages during the drinks update. But the good news is, he gets a free trucker's hat. Hoo-whee.

0:05:59 - Paul's done his homework, he watched Martin Scorsese's "After Hours", the subject of next week's Too Grumpy Movie Club. Have you watched it yet? A femailer (yeesssss) recommended the 1951 noir classic "The Prowler", now beautifully restored and with no hard rock, rap, or crazy musical surprises. Gears crunch, and he's on to the remake/reboot of "Friday The 13th" from 2009. Listen closely, and you'll find out a piece of trivia from the first version of the movie that could win you a pub quiz or a piece of pie at Trivial Pursuit one day. What was great about Paul's childhood? "Ark II", that's what. Sit-com "The IT Crowd" hits a little too close to home, though.

0:24:25 - Another dull week for Spike, taking in the first half hour of "Easy A", four times. High praise for the main actor, but not much else... (FYI, 'Clueless' was based on Jane Austin's "Emma", by the way. Not Shakespeare.) How many songs about bonnie lassies does it take to get Spike out of the shower? Lots, apparently. Also, a stunning realization about ABC's "No Ordinary Family".

0:00:00 - P&S act as wonderful role models for today's youth by sampling some booze. Paul's got the "ee dubya" bourbon, Spike's guzzling whiskey and beer with a hole in it. How does this relate to Apple computers and African mosquito nets? Oh, you'll be surprised.

0:15:42 - Paul's Week In Stuff has been varied, including episodes two and three of the new BBC "Sherlock" series. He enjoyed episode one immensely, and there have been plenty of "aha!" moments, but will episodes two and three fare as well? Some surprising praise for Cusack and Jackson in Stephen King's "1408", and they get geeky on what makes a good horror director. Houston, we have no problem with the documentary "For All Mankind", which features no narration, no talking heads and no "doo-dee-doo-doo-doo". You can see clips on YouTube, and user TheBigMamo sums it all up beautifully, "This film has been posted on youtube for almost 2 years, and it has less than 10,000 hits. Post a vid of a panty-less Brittany Spears getting out of a car, and it will quickly reach 10,000,000. Our priorities as a species are completely upside down." And how, Big Mamo. And how.

0:34:50 - Netflix (drink!) have released their iphone/ipod touch application, where subscribers can watch movies on their device of choice. First movie Spike chose to test it out was Orson Welles' "F For Fake", the first 25 minutes of which he is able to condense into one crowded sentence. His media intake has had much ubuntu, after listening to some surprising news stories on the South African talk station Talk Radio 702. There's not much of an argument for furthering cultural education by listening to creepy Russian shortwave buzzing station UVB-76, though. That's just geeky. If, however, you want to join the hunt for barking dogs or the Russian spelling alphabet, you can listen to it live here. Plots are hatched for P&S to set the shortwave enthusiast world aflame using only a pickle. On the nightstand, "The Lesbian Community" was worth every cent he paid for it... but is the last page there?

Jeff Bridges tugs at the heart - and banjo - strings in "Crazy Heart", and a producer opens up some insight (see what I did there?) in "Classic Albums; The Doors' The Doors".

0:06:13 - A full Week In Stuff for Paul, as we come to the alphabetical end of Roger Ebert's 'Greatest Movies' book with "Written On The Wind", which features, amongst other things, the very Seussian "smirk from Sirk". The 3D remake of "My Bloody Valentine" (won't you stay a... while! while!) gets a surprisingly positive review, as does the Colin Baker-era Dr Who story "Vengeance On Varos" - also known by it's working title; "Peri's Breasts Bouncing". All that, and you'll get to hear about the fall-of-Rome-style debauchery that went on backstage at a Frehley's Comet concert.

0:12:34 - Paul's Week In Stuff includes the blaxploitation homage "Black Dynamite", and wonders whether it would have been more lauded had it been directed by Quentin Tarantino. After that snickerfest, and watched through genuinely perfectly legal means (no, really) is "The Hurt Locker" - insert sound of gears crunching here, but does hype-allergic Paul think that all the to-do surrounding the movie was actually worth it...? He's been regressing into childhood with a cartoon-fest, including "Spiderman and his Amazing Friends" and "Thundar The Barbarian", and, just to put a downer on the week, he's been listening to Jim Croche, hearkening back to the days when top 40 artists could be butt-ugly.

0:26:35 - Clouding up Spike's DVD player has been the unfeasibly long titled movie "Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief", demonstrating his tenuous grasp of Greek mythology in the process, by forgetting half of the names of the characters he was surprised to remember from school. More geekish nostalgia, this time with 1991's straight-to-video Dr Who clipfest "The Tom Baker Years", in which the expert orator forgets everyone's name, but remembers what a good time he had with them in the pub afterwards. Tom Baker, that is. Not Spike.

Good news is that the audience have been hankering for some new episodes and will be thrilled that the show is back! Bad news is that all the emails and Tweets have been from people who all have Spike's last name.

0:03:10 - P&S detail the new format of "Too Grumpy Critics" which is startlingly like the format of "TPASS".

0:10:05 - Paul's Summer In Stuff was "lazier than Sarah Palin's fact-checker", but found the time to plough through the "History Of Middle Earth", which sounds like a text version of a director's commentary. It turns out that Paul doesn't have ADD, he's just a "Renaissance Soul", thanks to a book of the same name. Furthermore, he's been groovin' to Devo's new album "Something For Everybody" and the one one from former TPASS guest Mark Morriss' band The Bluetones "A New Athens". The show may well be doomed - Paul is now two movies away from completing the now infamous Ebert list of movies. What next??? German movie "Wings Of Desire" gets a thumbs up, though. The Hollywood remake... feh, not so much.

0:26:34 - Here's a very alliterative sentence; Spike's Summer in Stuff is super! Can you get hours of entertainment through three barrels of lost films? Yes, you can, if it's "Lost World Of Mitchell And Kenyon". The ghost of Oscar Wilde will be thrilled that Spike's picked up "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" for the first time in two decades. Why, you ask? Because there is only one thing worse than being talked about... And, there's not much you can say about the lost Dennis Potter play "Schmoedipus" other than that it's a Dennis Potter play that ticks all the boxes of a Dennis Potter play. Make out of that what you will.

Paul is hoping that you'd watch the proper one, and not the remake. He took in another episode of "Benny Goodman: King Of Swing", which mentioned something that Mark Morriss of The Bluetones was moved to acquire, after Paul's glowing review in TPASS#209. One off the Ebert list, "L'Avventura" from prospective cereal maker Michelangelo Antonioni-Os, and one from the listener recommendation list, "The Phantom Of The Paradise". Carburetors, man! That's what life is all about! The PSP's been getting some button-mashing love, via "Silent Hill: Origins". So, sshh!

Spike says, "you must forgive the points in the show where there are great gobs of silence or where we're all talking over each other. It sounds rude, but we were dealing with a two second delay between the three of us. That's the nature of distance, Skype and cellphones."

Ask them to stop drinking until they are of legal age, and they're like that, "whaaat?"

0:00:00 - It's official, Paul has officially dumped Miller Lite for Yuengling, which is making his evening better right from the get-go. But as for referring to it as a "lager"... Spike has a cultural problem with associating a "lager" with his elite group of friends.

0:04:18 - Politics. That's all I'm sayin'. Are protesters getting more violent? Is racism behind the teabaggers? Is the so-called Obamacare exactly the same as Romneycare? And furthermore, "Hussein". We all know what that means, don't we?

Let's hope that the in-movie snacks don't include peanut butter. Ew.

The show operates off of $20 bandwidth, what could possibly go wrong? Plus, The Boys update you on next week's live show.

Paul has been enjoying monster movie Cloverfield and he got to see MIA guest Eve Mauro's threepenny bits in high definition. From the Ebert list, The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, and through perfectly legal means, The Six Million Dollar Man. Spike's got, but not seen, the remastered Metropolis (obtained through perfectly legal means), the restoration of which leads on to a lengthy discussion about whether CGI special effects belong in The Trek, The Wars and The Who. (not *the* Who but... oh, it doesn't matter). He's been recapturing his youth by watching, no joke, "The Multi-Coloured Swap Shop" and ye olde BBC schools program "Science Topics" and was thoroughly entertained by "2012".

Highlight of the week was "The Chaos/Steam Experiment", Paul does his best to figure out in which order the characters get bumped off in. All things being well (and timezones worked out), actor Eve Mauro may join The Boys next week.

Ah, what a year it's been! And instead of palming off a best-of filled with stuff you can still get, and that's still fresh in your mind from the past twelve, we've decided to reach into the archives and palm off some years-old material from The Boys' days in old fashioned radio. On the slate this week, lottery winner Jack Whittaker, so-called POW Jessica Lynch, Janet Jackson, a drunk meteorologist and... tattoos?

01:35 - In 2002, Jack Whittaker became the largest lottery winner in Powerball history. In 2003, Jack Whittaker gets robbed of half a million dollars at a local fast food joint/strip bar. Paul and Spike were there with dissection of the incident and a local edition of the tv show "Cops"...

26:20 - In 2003, Jessica Lynch was injured by an Iraqi roadside bomb and - so the US military said - put a Jack Bauer-style single-handed beatdown on the elite republican guard, crawled out of the hospital, on fire, with eight orphans under each arm, cured cancer, de-colorized "Casablanca" and was home in time for dinner. Paul and Spike were there the day she came back home to West Virginia, and revealed the niceness of locals who won't be told...

01:00 - Funny how, looking back, it seemed like Arnold Schwarzenegger's gubernatorial run was a punchline, eh? Well, it happened, and what you'll hear in this segment is Paul, Spike, and journalist Chris "Mr Universe" Dickerson's treatment of the news of his entry into the race. Oh how we laughed, then gasped, then cried.

16:44 - Veteran news anchor Smack Torquelson grills Schwarzenegger, and asks the questions that need to be asked.*

21:04 - The Paul&Spike prognosticatin' microphones wonder exactly what a Schwarzenegger governorship might sound like. That's not funnee!

23:24 - Exactly why have The Boys been obsessed with Michael MacDonald? Spike has some ideas, but a clip from the year 2000 that features some very Michy MacD-sounding coming-back-from-the-commercials music, throws them into a fit of hilarity.

11:45 Did you enjoy last week's "Best Of"? Several emailers didn't hear it, but heard it was phenomenal. The Boys celebrate a working relationship of ten years, and look forward to next year's guests and more relaxation over the holiday season whilst they palm off more "Best Of" compilations on you, the frenzied fanbase.

10:00 This week's guest is a man who, by his own admission, has nothing to plug and nothing interesting to say. But he has the dirt on Spike. Interesting.

19:36 Is there a way to say "Lady Gaga" and NOT sound ridiculous? Probably not - but she's gone "gaga" (see what I did there?) over the fact that online music service Spotify (see also: Pandora) isn't making artists rich. Incidentally; how do you make Lady Gaga mad? ....Poker face.

26:41 It's This Week In Stuff, where The Boys share their media week. Fraser's in-flight entertainment included the excellent and entirely uncut "Up", but not the edited seven-minute airline version of "Behind The Green Door". He also managed to bear five whole seconds of "GI Joe", but most of the AHEM-manesque "Cold Souls". He followed a many shows old recommendation of Paul's and picked up Julian Barnes' "Nothing To Be Frightened Of", and his novel "Arthur & George"... problem is, Paul has no recollection of it - there is a chance to check off several squares on "Paul And Spike Bingo®" though.

36:13 Paul's week has seen some Ebert redemption in 1919's hilariously un-PC "Broken Blossoms" (also known as - I kid you not - "The Yellow Man And The Girl", adapted from the story "The Chink And The Child"), and sat in the dark by himself to watch the provocative 1981 animated movie "Heavy Metal". Ye-e-e-esssss.

02:24 The Internets - all of them - have been ablaze about Obama's ghastly middle east mistake. He bowed to a foreign leader, when he was supposed to have been rude and condescending. Get with the program, Barry Hussein! Spike reads out some hilarious feedback from an LA Times article about the breach of protocol. One of them includes the phrase "silken buttock line" - but not as a compliment.

10:52 Both of The Boys have several orders in for Sarah Palin's new book; one for the toilet, one for the Kindle, and one to hold up a shaky table leg. Some AP sharks have been doing "opposition research" and were shocked... SHOCKED to find that some facts were wrong.

21:44 The New Musical Express have released a list of the "Top Albums Of The Decade"! See how many (if any) The Boys recognize from the top ten. (hint: at least one... but not many more.)

00:00 Paul is teetering on the edge of his eighteenth nervous breakdown, thanks to "a Volkswagen-sized hole" in his front yard. Spike, as always, is just plain boring. The Boys discuss reasons (and methods) of starting a heroin habit to help them cope and to pass the time. Never claim that TPASS isn't educational...

08:41 Some great stuff going on in the news; Glenn Beck loses a lawsuit but gets what he asked for, and Sesame Street is 40 years old and riddled with scandals.

53:45 Spike's media week is part remake, part forward-looking: he took in the recent rehashing of "The Taking Of Pelham 123" (cue jokes about how he had never seen the first hundred and twenty four of them...) with the express (no pun, etc) intention of making fun of it on the show, but finds a whole different outcome. He is very much looking forward to watching two awesome pieces of television. A live seance by so-called medium Derek Acorah to try and contact Michael Jackson, and a "what if?" drama set in a fictional Britain where the death penalty has been re-introduced. Its first victim... Gary Glitter.

1:10:42 Following on from a conversation The Boys had a few weeks ago, the topic for discussion is albums. Have ipods and CD changers messed up the artform of the LP? Is the hard work the artist and producer do sculpting the perfect running order gone forever thanks to the shuffle culture? They talk about the last albums that they listened to end-to-end. Paul fell in love with the Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers", and Spike found a new appreciation for Nick Drake's "Five Leaves Left". What's the last album you listened to end to end? In between bouts of "Mario And Sonic At The Winter Olympics" on the DS, he's dropping spoilers of The Wire's season four all over the place, and having a daddy daughter bonding moment over "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" on Blue Ray. Or is it "Dwarves"? Get ready for a gear crunch, as he goes from Snow White to "Drag Me To Hell". Hopefully his daughter was out of the room by the time that one started....

38:15 What a suspiciously porn-centric week Spike's been having. He wants to put filth into Google Wave, and was thoroughly creeped out by Dan Savage's podcast, where a feminist caller had trouble dealing with wanting to be... well... raped. By a rapist. Not really a rapist, but Spike's convinced she's playing with kinky fire. In another crunching gear change, Spike has discovered a personal Holy Grail; a genuinely funny comedy show for kids. It's the BBC's "Sorry, I've Got No Head", an adult-written and performed hybrid of "The Fast Show" and "Little Britain". Add in a few lazy, so-called "ironic" racial epithets, and it would be an adult comedy show!

48:45 It's been a year since America did the unexpected, and elected a non-white man as President. The Boys (both Obama supporters a year ago) discuss whether O's first year has been a success or a disappointment, and whether their initial enthusiasm was unfounded.

In this Halloween spectacular (yes, I avoided saying "spooktacular" on purpose) The Boys are joined by Two Men And A Ghost. The Two Men in question, Mike Kazybrid and Andrew Wooding have been working in comics for over 30 years and have written and drawn characters such as Spider-Man, Desperate Dan, Transformers, Bananaman, The Bash Street Kids, The Tick, Count Duckula, Do-Do Man, Savage Sidney, Shaun the Sheep, and many, many more. Recently, they've turned their talents to the supernatural, and are searching Sheffield for the truth about local ghostly legends... that's if they remember their flashlights, of course.

00:00 Good LORD above, does the technical torment never stop with these two? More computer issues? It might be the ghosts that are messing with the Paul And Spike Show equipment, or - Occam's razor - it might be operator error.

05:41 Neither of The Boys are going to go and see "This Is It!", the Michael Jackson movie (ee-hee! oohhh!), but Rush Limbaugh gets fished in by a thesis that turned out to not have been written by Barack Obama, and refuses to deny it's hoaxeyness, so there's that to talk about in a slow news week.

This week, it's Celebrity This Week In Stuff as the British comic industry's finest artist slash writer combo Andrew Wooding and Mike Kazybrid join The Boys. Andrew's looking to the future and has Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus" and the new season of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" to see. Marvel artist Mike's had a rip-rolling time with the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" movie, and has a very interesting story about how an ex-Time Bandit almost became his uncle... Poor Mrs Higginbotham; she's being driven crazy thanks to Paul's re-discovery of Fleetwood Mac, and he has crossed another Ebert movie off the list; "Gates Of Heaven" - a documentary about pet cemeteries. Yes, you read that right. As for Spike, another week listening to South African talk station Talk Radio 702 has provided him with "the greatest piece of radio I have ever heard in my life". His South African accent's not gotten any better, though.

41:36 Some listener mail poses interesting discussion points: does Morrissey have "a dark appetite for tofu"? Can "The Wizard Of Oz" get any more garish? Does "The Nightmare Before Christmas" count as a Halloween movie, or a Christmas movie? Or both? Has Andrew's Mom ever been proposed to by Sneezy? Spike's been perving over Kim Basinger's toolbox (both a euphemism and not a euphemism) with the utterly ghastly/hilarious "While She Was Out". Paul, meanwhile, has been reading "A Tale Of Two Cities" and watching a doco about the Manson family. Should we be worried...?

Getting a jump on the subject of this week's Over/Under segment, The Film Geek has already posted his top five movie bad guys and gals. Eager, ain't he?

00:00 The man's right; there's no time to open the show with a well thought-out pithy remark, it's right out of the box and into what's happenin' in the world. Paul's Blue-Ray gets a fourth chance, Spike's Mr Sniffy McCough-Cold and you'll find out whether The Boys' parents kept them home from school so they wouldn't hear Obama's school-focused traitorous decent into evil, evil socialism.

21:43 Pickin' And Grinnin', the only global newscast that not only covers the stories that matter to you and have a global impact on the global world internationally, but also has banjos. ...oh, wait. I've just been informed that there's a local newscast in Kentucky that has banjos in it. And also, apparently, "fiddlin'." Bugger.

24:10 It's been a blockbuster summer of movies, and TFG puts in his ha'porth on the season's cinematic offerings. Screwball comedy "The Hangover" scores high, but "District 9" is trounced. Socially-aware Paul and Peter Jackson fan Spike aren't about to let him away with such slander. In the meantime, TWiT's still not getting much Paul-love, but the Nintendo World Report is. Oh, and can you smell the Radio Shack carpet? That'll be the Sky and Telescope podcast.

Inspired by an email sent to Old Spike and an article that made Paul stand and applaud at his computer, the question is whether true literary criticism exists anymore, or whether critics are more interested in poking people in the ribs.

10:10 The future is... now? Against all conceivable odds, some frat boys gave Spike pause for thought. And it wasn't thought about beer bongs, loud rap music and catcalling at beeotches.

15:03 After painting a pretty picture, The Boys examine the week's news in brief (but not in briefs) in Pickin' and Grinnin'.

17:45 Me me me! Us us US, dag nabbit! This Week In Stuff, the segment of the show where The Boys warn and/or recommend their media intake to you. Paul's never-ending quest to recapture his lost childhood continues, thanks to Spiderman And His Amazing Friends. He's further into the Bask Of The Houndervilles on his beloved Kindle (Paul's a contributing blogger at Kindeville, didntcha know) and Wii-ing the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Spike wrote a blog post about the only two tennis games worth playing over the course of twenty years, and is thiiiiis close to winning Wimbledon. He's also reading a book that outlines the science of a really bad day... There's some dodgy audio towards the end of the segment thanks to Skype going a bit doo-lally, so don't adjust your sets.

Oh, this is cool. On Friday, 28th August Radio Six International will be broadcasting the whole of The Hydro Amnesty Bash live from the Community Hall in the Island of Lismore, Argyll. This seven hour festival will include all sorts of music - from jazz guitar to indie pop; from ceilidh band to rock 'n' roll. The show will include Chunks, Spin-Offs, Winginit, The Fabulous Baker Girls, Mark Heavanor, The Lismore Boys, No Nightmares, Garry Whitton and open mic artists. Between the acts, Tony Currie will be talking to the bands taking part and playing tracks from the Random Playlist. The live broadcast begins at 19:00 GMT with our 88.5FM listeners in New Zealand and listeners to 1530AM in Glasgow also hearing the entire event. There will be a repeat of the six hour programme on Sunday, 30th August from 10:30 GMT.

The Boys spend (waste) some time worrying about the origins of "how old Cary Grant" and "it's only a movie, Ingrid". Meanwhile, Spike has a stroke.

03:20 Time to sift through the correspondence - Following Old Spike's statements of hatred for The Society Of Diagonal Walkers, The Boys read an email from someone who needs a societal name for people who press elevator buttons when they're already lit, and pedestrians who don't speed up their road-crossing when they see a car coming.
