Washing Feet – A Real Story

One of my wife’s acquaintance is a missionary for Jesus somewhere in Africa. Recently we received an email containing the following story.

“I have told you about *May who has breast cancer and her days left on this earth are few. Each day I go and sit by her, talk with her, care for her and try to help her to be as comfortable as possible. She lives under a grass mat shelter held up by four wooden posts and the walls of her shelter are made of an old blackboard and some sheets of fabric that used to be their clothes. Her bed is a rotting grass mat that the ants have eaten holes in and she lays on an old wool blanket. Her constant companion are the flies which gather from the smell of her rotting flesh as she lays waiting and watching her family working to survive each day. She is the first wife of her husband who lives 100 kilometers away in the village with her “sister wife” and her four other children. She came to Ati with her three year old son, her mother and father, looking for hope.

The Father usually speaks to me in the still of the night. So, over the years of listening, I have learned to obey and not question the thoughts and Words He speaks in the wee hours of the morning. Last week He woke me up with great conviction about laying His entire plan for life out before May and giving her an opportunity to choose Jesus. I will admit, at first I started to think how would all of those arabic words come to make His story so clear from beginning to end. The next morning, between patients God gave me the words to tell May and through His Spirit all the words came as I began to write. After changing her dressing and getting her settled I asked May if God had told her something important to share with another should she obey God. Her eyes got big and she said “of course”! For the next 20 minutes there was silence as May, her son, her mother and father, her brother, an aunt, sister-in-law and several nephews and a stranger sat listening to God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. May has now heard the Road of Jesus and now she is asking God to show her which road is the right road, that of Mohammed or that of Jesus.

Now to the feet…..I don’t know if you know what feet look like after living in the desert, but they are quite gross! Dirty, leathery, cracked bleeding hells and not very pretty! When I returned to care for May the day after I shared the Gospel, I felt such a sweet soft touch on my feet as I was working. I looked up and sitting at my feet was her three year old son gently rubbing and masaging my feet! His grandfather tried to shoo him away, but he insisted and continued to wipe my feet with his hands. Each day as I arrive he waits for me to get settled next to his mom and then he comes through those gathered around and takes his place, at my feet, wiping and rubbing as I work on his momma. As those sweet tender hands minister to me the difficulty of cleaning rotting, tumor ridden flesh, agonizing over which pain medicine will take some of the pain and the anxiety of where she will spend eternity fades as the Father speaks that He is rubbing and masaging May’s heart, just as her son is washing my feet with his hands.”

Denver Broncos will remember this year for at least three reasons:
a) They are celebrating their 50 seasons of football. That being the reason why they are wearing the original uniforms.
b) They have a new and young coach – Josh McDaniels
c) It has been a long time since they were 6-0 at this point in the season.

Anyways, the reason I posted this is because I just got a new Nikon lense and while I was playing around I took a photo of a coca-cola can that has on it info bout Denver Broncos 50 anniversary logo.

Disciple Now Curriculum by Max Lucado

It’s not about me! When was the last time you heard these words? When was the last time you spoke these words of self-denial? Our vocabularies tend to be more characterized by terms of self-promotion, self-preservation, and self-centeredness.

Our culture encourages us to be as self-focused as possible. The advertisement industry is telling us that we need and deserve to have the things they sell. So, we indulge ourselves thinking that maybe this time we may achieve happiness.

If the world is telling us to GET as much stuff as we can, God is calling us to GIVE as much as we can. He is calling us to lose our lives in order to find them. More than ever before, we need someone to rescue us from the me-centered life we thought would make us happy.

The God-centered life works. When God is number one in our lives, we start seeing life and people differently. This year during Disciple Now, we want to help teenagers see everything in their lives – friendships, family situations, their bodies, and even their problems – as platforms to bring God glory.

What Is The Purpose Of Worship?

Following is a young man’s meditation on worship. Jordan Bulalayao is one of the young adults from our church who organized a night of worship.

Just recently I had the honor of experiencing a night of worship with my church family. We had a great time and I totally felt moved by how the spirit was moving through everyone. But the one thing that has been getting to me is… what is true worship? Is worship just the act of singing? Or playing music? Is worship really all about God? Why do we worship? Why should we worship? Why devote an entire night of it?

If I don’t know what worship is, or its purpose, did I actually do it right, if I even did it in the first place?

Wikipedia explains “Worship is etymologically derived from Old English words meaning “worth-ship”. Giving worth to something. In its older sense in English of worthiness or respect (Anglo-Saxon,worthscripe), worship may on occasion refer to an attitude towards someone of immensely elevated social status, such as a lord or a monarch, or, more loosely, towards an individual, such as a hero or one’s lover.”

so, basically worship gives something its worth, its respect… in that sense, by devoting a night to drop everything pick up a guitar and rock out, did I really give God his worth, His respect? Sadly, no. it’s not enough. Sadly enough, no one did. Because God is worth more than one night. God is worth more than music and bowing and jumping and lifting hands… and surely we should respect Him more.

But even in our daily lives, do we give Him the respect He deserves? Every day do we show that God is worth everything we do? If worship means giving worth to something, who or what do I worship? I work, and then I go to work. And then I come home and watch TV and eat. My life and all I do revolves around me, work, food, TV, or sleep. I devote my time, my effort, my physical well-being to these things. Ive given them worth. None of these refer to someone of immensely elevated status, but they are of immensely elevated importance… immensely elevated worth. So I worship my bed, my food, my TV, and my jobs. And that sucks. Because if that’s the case, I’ve missed the whole reason of why I do what I do.

Take a look at your daily life. Is there something that has more worth or importance to you than God alone? it could be work, family, cars, video games, TV, music, reading your bible, being an all around good person, doing everything right… and don’t get me wrong these are all good things… but not if it takes away from the one true God. (For anyone that reads this, understand that there is a distinct line between a god and THE ONE TRUE GOD, because we all make little gods out of everything)

maybe, I need to look at myself and my life and clearly decide who or what is worth my time. Maybe, with everything I do, I should it not because the thing itself is worth it, but because who I am doing it for is.
