The problem that Database Change Management is attempting to solve:

• Most significant business applications rely on at least one relational database for persisting data

Successful database change management requires that a consistent process be applied by all team members. Without a consistent process than the tools provided in this solution will not provide its full value. The proposed/ideal process that uses database change management tools would consist of:

In a nutshell Schema Compare quickly and simply compares two instances of a given database, but it is so much more than a simple comparison product. For example, typically a development team has a lead developer and this role can be a bit tedious at times when it comes to the underlying databases. Because the development team may all be creating database changes in order to meet the business requirements of the project. Also be aware that there are two editions, therefore you must decide which best suits your needs.

When it comes down to it the goal of database change management is to reduce risk and cost and this is where Schema Compare steps up to the task.

While my review targets a SQL Server database, it is important to understand that Devart has you covered should you not be using SQL Server. There are also editions for both Oracle and MySQL.

First Hand Experience

I must say that using Schema Compare could not be any simpler. I am typically the type of person that jumps in head first with a software package and turning to the documentation as needed. This said, once the install was complete I fired up Schema Compare where I was presented the following dialog.

As you may have gathered from the above screen I want to create a new schema comparison, however before I do so, I want to state that I am using the Northwind database for my development database and I have another database instance named NorthwindNew which is my target production database.

Now it is time to perform a comparison. I will not state up front what differences there are with this two databases, rather I will share the results to demonstrate the power of Schema Compare.

Note: Within the options dialog you have a number of customized decisions you can make to be fit your needs. Here I will continue with the default options.

The object filter provides a mechanism to again fine tune the comparison to your needs.

At this point I am ready to perform the actual comparison.

Moments after clicking the compare button, I am presented the following.

Take note in the previous screen highlighted in yellow it is clear what changes reside in the Northwind database and the operation that must occur on NorthindNew to once again make both database instances a mirror image of one another. Also before you commit any changes to the target database you can perform confirmation by filtering the on differences between the two databases.

Should you find a difference that you are not ready to commit simply change the operation.

Take a look at the following update script that was generated. This script provides an easy mechanism to share with others who may need to synchronize their database.

If you recall one of the issues to address with a successful database change management is a consistent process that is applied by all team members. Devart dbForge Schema Compare provides this level of consistency while at the same time you can also quickly see a return on investment for the cost of this product. Schema Compare I must say is very user friendly and very powerful. Often I encounter software that is very useful but is very difficult to use on a daily basis, not in this case and Devart hit the mark with this software.
