Health Care Reform Passes And You Must Now Speak Out Even Louder

Saturday’s vote on the health care bill disturbs me and while it was a close vote the bill as is stands now did in fact pass and you can view the results yourself here, also I recommend that you read Michelle Malkin’s article titled Health care takeover roll call vote — and what GOP Rep. Joseph Cao got from Obama; Plus: Organizing for America hustles more money.

If you also have concerns about this bill I strongly urge you to contact your Senator and voice to them where you stand on this issue. I for one immediately contacted my representatives and clearly stated my view as an American on this subject. It is very simple to contract your representative and all it takes is a few minutes of you time to do so. In fact below is what I sent off to my representatives.

I am strongly opposed the current health care reform as it stands in its current state. I believe in fair market principles. If we could buy insurance nationally, enact Tort reform and encourage a capitalist, market based competition, I believe we all would benefit with lower premiums and better care. As a disabled veteran that served my country proudly for fifteen years I can tell you the thought of government ran health insurance scares me if what I have seen from the VA medical quality of care is of any indication.

Government has its role and a takeover of health care is not one such role. Once this door is opened I fear further laws would be enacted that would ban or provide penalties for smokers, coffee drinkers, and those that may participate in an activity that the government deems a risk to an individual’s well being. I see this move as a mechanism to strip away the basic rights of freedom that all Americans currently enjoy.

While I do agree there are problems with the current health care programs today I strongly believe that the Government is not the solution to health care. Rather long term we may see a negative impact that a number of Americans have voiced concern over.

Please fight this with every power you have.

Honoring Those Men And Women In Uniform

I know each and every one of you are aware of the pressing matter in Afghanistan and if you are not then shame on you! The U.S. Military is fighting an ever increasing difficult war and these troops need our support and thoughts now. I realize this is a difficult time for mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and spouses and the uncertainty of day to day activities makes life very difficult. Just know that these men and women are in the day to day prayers of many American across this great country. With this I am asking that others provide an act of kindness to demonstrate gratitude for what these individuals are doing to protect us. There are a number of organizations that can assist in this matter and here are a few to get you thinking.

There are number of great organizations out there so pick one today and show your support.

Now I am disturbed about President Obama not taking quicker action. Back on January 2009 (Reference Fox News) President Obama stated the following:

If the Afghanistan government falls to the Taliban or allows al-Qaida to go unchallenged, that country will again be a base for terrorists.
So I want the American people to understand that we have a clear and focused goal: to disrupt, dismantle and defeat al-Qaida in Pakistan
and Afghanistan, and to prevent their return to either country in the future.

I for one wish the President would simply make a decision and act fast. Every minute that the President has spent on the Olympics, Health Care Reform, and Stimulus Packages more and more of our troops are paying the ultimate price for this country. General McChrystal knows what he needs and this is the General President Obama put into power so why is this administration not acting? In fact according the The Washington Post Sen. Daniel Inouye supports the General where Rep. David Obey has doubts. Decisions about war are never easy however as a veteran I plead with this administration to live up to their promises and get these troops the necessary support they so badly deserve.

If you recall earlier I said shame on you if you were not knowledgeable about the Afghanistan War I highly suggest you watch the PBS Video Frontline – Obama’s War and see exactly what are troops are facing. I warn you this is not an easy video to watch.

This administration can honor the troops by keeping their promise and standing tall. What is your thoughts on this subject?

Department Of Defense Collaborative Community

As a prior DoD contractor I was surprised when I learned of Forge.mil and in a good way. I has been a number of years since I worked at the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) as well as a Department of Defense (DoD) contractor for the United States Air Force and I must say times are a changing. It seems that Forge.mil is based upon open source and I can only say I think it is long overdue for this type of adoption of software. Now I am sure that an extensive process went into the thought behind this initiative and it proves that the DoD does not have to shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars for commercial off the shelf products (COTS) in times past. Kudos to DISA!

So what does Forge.mil represent you may ask, well here is a brief overview of the program.

Forge.mil is a family of services provided to support the DoD’s technology development community. The system currently enables the collaborative development and use of open source and DoD community source software. These initial software development capabilities are growing to support the full system life-cycle and enable continuous collaboration among all stakeholders including developers, testers, certifiers, operators, and users.

There are a number of sub-components that include software, project, standards, certification, and test. In other words the entire application life cycle.

The beauty of these services are:

Fee for service
Provides cloud computing
Development and implementation of DoD IT and data standards
Improves risk management
Lower infrastructure cost across the community

I always find it interesting when the DoD can adapt to changes in technology and corporations seem to waiver in their decisions. Open source is not the answer to every problem but if one would stop to think about the potential solutions out there in the market place today you may find yourself in the same position as DISA.

I admit that I was a late adopter of Twitter and recently I have been looking at the various clients on the market. Below you will find the ones that I have ran across.

TwitterFox

TwitterFox is a Firefox extension that notifies you of your friends’ tweets on Twitter. This extension adds a tiny icon on the status bar which notifies you when your friends update their tweets. Also it has a small text input field to update your tweets.

TweetDeck

TweetDeck is your personal browser for staying in touch with what’s happening now, connecting you with your contacts across Twitter, Facebook and more. TweetDeck shows you everything you want to see at once, so you can stay organized and up to date.

Twhirl

Twhirl is a desktop client for the popular microblogging service Twitter. It allows you to post short 140-character updates about what you are doing, as well as following your twitter friends and read all their updates, replies anyone sends to you, and direct messages to your account. You can also answer to another user by replying or sending him/her a private direct message. Twhirl has a lot of other features, for example looking up other user’s profiles, searching public tweets (powered by terraminds, favoring tweets etc.

Twitterrific

Twitterrific is a fun application that lets you both read and publish posts or “tweets” to the Twitter community website. The application’s user interface is clean, concise and designed to take up a minimum of real estate on your Mac’s desktop.

I am sure there are many others and I tend to lean toward TwitterFox because of the simplicity of the product. What is your favorite Twitter client?

Retro Technology

If you have been around technology as long as I have you may recall watching commercials during the early years of cell phones and the internet. While I was looking at the history of technology and gadgets today, I found a number of items that both made me realize just how old I am and that make me laugh. I am sure that teens today look at this and never think twice how accessible technology is in their day to day lives. If you have forgot about those early days then sit back, relax, and take a spin down memory lane while we look back at televisions, pocket calculators, cell phones and more. Just try not to laugh to hard or cry depending upon your mindset.

What Happened To Free Speech

Today I was catching up on the news and I read some disturbing reports about the digital age and how anyone can post a blog entry, send an email, or a text message that others may find objectionable or disagree with and the idea is that the government should step in and come to our rescue to protect our eyes and ears from information that they feel would cause one to be uncomfortable. What? Does anyone really believe this garbage? Please tell me this is not so. Am I offending you right now with my view on this subject? Freedom of speech is one of the many aspects that makes this country great and I for one do not believe the government should police digital media and determine what is appropriate and inappropriate.

Upon reading these new reports I decided I should do some research and see what if anything our elected officials and considering. What I found surprised me! A bill introduced by Representive Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., is designed to prevent cyberbullying, making it punishable by law.

I believe that we can protect our right to free speech and victims of cyberbullying at the same time,” continued Sanchez. “I want the law to be able to distinguish between an annoying chain email, a righteously angry political blog post, or a miffed text to an ex-boyfriend – all of which are and should remain legal; and serious, repeated, and hostile communications made with the intent to harm. When the latter rises to a criminal level, as it did in the case of Lori Drew, prosecutors should have a tool at their disposal to allow them to punish the perpetrator.

As I read more on the press release from September 30, 2009 Rep. Linda Sanchez also mentioned a case of a 17 year old victim and to my amazement Rep. Linda Sanchez has provided a link to the video, court transcripts, and more. I agree with what these boys did was wrong and they deserve punished I do find myself asking is there really a need to provide access to the graphic details in this manner? I think not! My problem with this bill is not with what Rep. Linda Sanchez stated in her quote but the language of the bill itself. Section 881 reflects:

Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person, using electronic means to support severe, repeated, and hostile behavior, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.
the term communication’ means the electronic transmission, between or among points specified by the user, of information of the user’s choosing, without change in the form or content of the information as sent and received; and
the term electronic means’ means any equipment dependent on electrical power to access an information service, including email, instant messaging, blogs, websites, telephones, and text messages.

Oh what times we live in. In fact I found a web site titled Stop Cyberbullying which provides a list of both direct and indirect attacks and the one on blogs jumped out at me. Here is what it states:

Blogs are online journals. They are a fun way for kids and teens to messages for all of their friends to see. However, kids sometimes use these blogs to damage other kids’ reputations or invade their privacy. For example, in one case, a boy posted a bunch of blogs about his breakup with his ex-girlfriend, explaining how she destroyed his life, calling her degrading names. Their mutual friends read about this and criticized her. She was embarrassed and hurt all because another kid posted mean, private, and false information about her. Sometimes kids set up a blog or profile page pretending to be their victim and saying things designed to humiliate them.

While I see the basic common decency issue in this example use of a blog I must ask the question what if the boy had simply voiced his thoughts or wrote them on a sheet of paper and passed this note to the mutual friend? This is why I see this as a gray area and I am sure if you think about you high school years you probably said a great number of horrible things during that difficult time in life. Did I offend you here? Will the digital media police be knocking on my door? Where does it all stop?

The problem is not the digital medium rather I see it much like the saying “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”. It’s true that one can sit at their desk and bang away at the keyboard without anyone watching over their shoulder however I put the blame on government, society, and parents. How can anyone expect any individual to act with morals when no one is teaching proper morals today for the most part. One does not have to look any further than out elected leaders to see they demonstrate poor judgment as well.
