Here we go! Three days of high class action at Cheltenham kicks off with three solid bets for you on Friday the 13th!

By Carl Harris

There will be some punters looking at the dates and not getting involved. I am not superstitious, which is just as well as I am having a test in hospital to determine if I have a heart problem!

The Open Meeting kicks off at Cheltenham, three days of excellent jumps racing with the Gold Cup on Saturday and the seasonal debut of dual Champion Chaser Master Minded on Sunday.

Last year the meeting kicked off with some controvesy with Hoopy winning after the jockey borrowed someone’s whip! It should be another excellent event. No matter where I am I will be watching.

Master Minded in action on Sunday

Here a few bets for the Cheltenham card on Friday.

1:50 Cheltenham- Cootehill, Win

CooteHill (13:50) won a listed hurdle last time out last time at Kempton to make it three wins in four starts. This is a competitve looking field with a few unexposed types that could potentially step-up but I am sticking with the form and siding with the Twiston-Davies five year-old.

henerson trains French Opera

2:25 Cheltenham- French Opera, Win

A couple of weeks ago I said that French Opera (14:25) was a proper chasing type, which he proved with a clear round of jumping to win easily first time out over fences. This is a decent race wit Song Of Songs potentially a decent horse, but French Opera for me will develop in to a high class chaser which if correct should see him win this.

4:05 Cheltenham- Knockara Beau, Win

I have made the fatal mistake on under-estimating Knockara Beau (16:05) on the last two occasions when he won in style. I will not make the same error again as he gives weight all round in the final race on the card. Ashkazar is interestin, boasting a high rating over hurdles and made a decent start to fencing last time, but Knockara Beau looks a genuine top class horse who if trained by a big southern yard would be a much shorter price.

Carl Harris’ Best for Bets for Friday 13th October

13:50 Cheltenham- Cootehill, Win

14:25 Cheltenham- French Opera, Win

16:05 Cheltenham- Knockara Beau, Win

TRANQUIL TOPS THE BETTING BUT IRELAND 10/3 TO BREAK 29-YEAR BLANK!

After a swell of support yesterday, Edward O’Grady’s Traquil Sea tops the betting with William Hill for this weekend’s Paddy Power Gold Cup at the 48-hour declaration stage.

The seven-year-old was backed down to 11/2 from 9/1 yesterday, and now boasts favourtism in the Grade Three handicap on Saturday ahead of the well-fancied Chaopturgeon (6/1), and Alan King’s Tarotino (7/1).

Not since Bright Highway in 1980 has an Irish-trained runner won the race though, and Hills offer odds of 10/3 that the trend is broken this year with either of the two Emerald Isle raiders.

Heavy rain forecast for Cheltenham has provoked further money for the French-bred Tatenen whose impressive soft-ground win at this meeting 12 months ago led to the five-year-old going off the well-backed 4/1 Arkle favourite. Andy Stewart’s bay gelding is now an 8/1 chance with William Hill having been 10/1 just 24-hours ago.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Always a keen betting heat, the punters have been out in droves to play in this year’s renewal with a host of horses supported ante-post. The move for Tranquil Sea now makes him our biggest liability, and the William Hill head office will be anything but calm if he prevails.’’

Paddy Power Gold Cup (William Hill Bet) 11-2 Tranquil Sea, 6-1 Chapoturgeon, 8-1 Tatenen, Tarotino, 10-1 Ballyfitz, Poquelin, 11-1 Northern Alliance, 12-1 My Petra, 16-1 Bible Lord, 20-1 From Dawn To Dusk, 25-1 According To Pete, I’m So Lucky, Tartak, 33-1 Hold Em, Il Duce, Knowhere, Our Vic, Pop, Three Mirrors, 50-1 Leslingtaylor( 1, 2, 3,4) – All Quoted

By Carl Harris

Thursday and I find myself studying the form on my rather handy netbook in York General Hospital. I feel absolutely fine, but went to the doctors with a pain that somehow got diagnosed as a potential heart issue. Despite having no classic heart problems I am going to have some test called an angiogram which sounds as appealing as Catterick on the coldest of January afternoons. Tell a lie, Catterick wins by a distance.

So to the racing, which I can cannily watch using Betfair’s excellent streaming video service. I am hoping that I will get the all-clear to go home, i don’t want to miss the racing on Friday and Saturday, the open meeting at Cheltenham is one of my favourites. Its jumps season proper when that meeting starts in my book.

So to Thursday where the action comes from Ludlow and Taunton over jumps and Southwell and Wolverhampton (evening) on the all-weather.

14:00 Ludlow Foxesbow, Win

Tony McCoy is at the top of the jockeys championship this season, what a shock I hear you say and no doubt that is where he will stay. He was unlucky not to have added another to his tally last week with Foxesbow (14:00) Ludlow who was game in the running but went down by a narrow margin. Connections waste no time in running again before the handicapper has his say and is worth a punt to win here.

Angies Nap the banker

14:20 Southwell- Angie’s Nap, Win

At Southwell you need a horse that goes well on the surface. Angie’s Nap (14:20) clearly fits the bill, dropped in to a seller you would have to make her your Nap, not just Angie’s today. Having won her last three races on the surface Angie’s Nap should win this very weak looking seller. My best bet of the day.

Carl Harris’ Best Bets for Thursday 12 November

So Wednesday, we have two jumps cards and all-weather racing this afternoon at Southwell and tonight at Kempton. I am going to focus on the jumps once again with bets at Bangor and Warwick. The weather is feeling more winter like, after a mild spell, it’s the proper jumps season now, in the cold.

13:40 Bangor- Free World, Win

Free World (13:40) has much to live up to carrying the colours of Kauto Star and Master Minded. He is not that class, but nonetheless is a decent chaser who makes his seasonal reappearance at Warwick in a small but very competitive field. Much has been said that he is a nearly horse but the stats show a 25 percent strike rate, with two wins from eight runs and he has been in the first three in six of those runs. If he carried different colours I think he would have much less criticism to contend with. Ruby Walsh is aboard, the best horse in my view, and should get the better of Doctor David and the enigmatic Moon Over Miami.

Famous Colours carried by Free World

13:50 Warwick- Topsham Belle, Win

Nicky Henderson has a stable full of promising young horses having won so many bumpers last year. Topsham Belle, (13:50) is one such prospect who has run once, bolting up on her debut at Huntingdon. The stable has a great record with first time out hurdlers, indeed this stable is the hurdle stable boasting the current Triumph and Champion Hurdle crowns. I expect Topsham Belle to confirm the promise of her run in April with a win here.

DENMAN CONFIRMS WELL-BEING WITH EXETER RACECOURSE GALLOP

Denman – winner of the 2007 Hennessey – began his build-up to a second attempt at the famous race with a gallop at Exeter this afternoon. Connections will be hoping to regain the Cheltenham Gold Cup they lost to Kauto Star in 2009.

Denman looking good

Drawing comparisons to the Denman of old, the 2008 Gold Cup hero appeared to be blooming with health in the parade ring before his circuit gallop of the Devon course alongside stable mate Beshabar. The duo cantered for most of the course, before upping the tempo in the home-straight with Denman leading the pair home. Denam ran one of the best races of his life in the Hennessey Gold Cup, under top weight.

William Hill make Denman their 6-1 favourite for the Hennessey Gold Cup in three weeks’ time, along with stablemate What A Friend, also offering 6-1 about a repeat Gold Cup win putting him second-favourite in the list behind the reigning Gold Cup Champion, and 7-4 favourite Kauto Star.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’He looked much like the Denman of old with plenty of condition, and strode out well on the softening ground. It is clearly full steam ahead for his second Hennessey bid, and possibly a return to his golden season of 2007-2008.’’

Nathan Lynch down under has two bets for you in the UK and US on Tuesday.

Nathan Lynch has more bets for you. Nathan is a pro punter based in Australia and runs website From The Horses Mouth.

USA Racing

Philadelphia R8 No2 Calm And Collected (2) – absolutely flying at present winning 9 from 13 this year including last 3 on end, very good effort 2 back when dictating an above average tempo on the front end over 1m70y at Penn National, led by 6l entering the stretch run and battled on strong one paced with a nice turn of foot holding that margin to the line to win by 6.2l putting a further 5.2l back to 3rd in a field of 5, franked that form winning by 9l on sloppy going next time out against similar, has good initial speed and likely to go straight to the front here from the 2 alley and prove hard to run down in deep stretch.

Meadowlands R7 No9 Miss Match (2) – former Argentinean galloper having 2nd start this prep and 3rd run in the USA, 4 starts ago won the Argentine Oaks G1 at Hipodromo by 3l on dirt widening the margin down the stretch run hitting the line very hard, franked that form next start when 3rd in the G1 Copa De Plata on turf at San Isidoro btn 2.5l, was tried on yielding turf 1st USA start 3 back and failed, forget the run, resumed last start at Delaware over 1m closing with strong pars coming from midfield off only an average pace to finish 2nd btn a neck with good margins further back through the field in OC30K company, fitter now and switched back to the turf likely to get one of the runs of the race tracking a minimum solid tempo with 3 potential leaders engaged, well bred by very good South American based son of AP Indy (Indigo Shiner) out of a Southern Halo mare, proven it can handle the turf when 3rd in the Copa De Plata and with the good un in transit will be the one closing hardest in deep stretch, lightly raced having only faced the starter 8 times, decent scope for further improvement here.

Two US bets today

UK Racing

Exeter 1.40 R1 No7 Kahsabelle (2) – 1st up this preperation for the astute Venetia Williams yard who has produced 3 winners from her last 11 runners over the last 7 day span, last time when starting off a lengthy break finished 2nd at Ascot btn 0.7l by Santia over 16f in bottomless heavy going in 6K Novice hurdle company, hit the front before the 2nd last and battled on strongly to get nabbed close home after battling on strongly, fitness told, put good margins back to 3rd and 4th and 5th suggesting very good hidden merit in the performance, back onto better going here suits and faces a drop in class on that performance, yet to win in 12 career starts but in the right race now on exposed class and ready to break maiden status, currently on offer at 3.75 with betfair which is about 1/2 a point over the right quote we need to secure true value.

Sedgefield 1.20 R2 No1 Honour The World (2) - drops sharply in class here and back to hurdles after contesting Chase events against much stronger last 2 efforts (not disgraced considering what it takes on here), ships over from Ireland and go on effort at Bellewstown 4 starts ago defeating Wikaala and Gratified on yielding ground over 3f shorter than today’s trip, should get the distance OK considering this is a firmer surface it gets to take advantage of here, biggest query is is the other main pick in the market Commons Glory who gets weight relief carrying 1stone less but it was under heavy pressure last start over 2m1f when headed by Mickmacmagoogle going over the last jump.
