Memorial Quilt Made from Golf Shirts and Pants

Linda S. made this for a client who's husband was an avid golfer. He passed away and she wanted a wall hanging made from his clothing for her daughter.

The fabrics these golf shirts were made from were divine. I would love to have shirts out of this material. It was so soft- almost like a thick silk!

Linda used some cuttings from the pants too. These were a low loft corduroy that was also incredibly soft with a wonderful drape.

In the outside corners she placed pockets from his jeans. That presented a bit of a challenge to place/connect motifs that wouldn't get too close to the pockets and would fill out the space. I really needed to stay off the pockets as the seams were too thick to sew through or over.

The center is made from the back of the shirts and includes the shirt tags. Cute idea, eh? I had to stay off those as well as they would have moved under the hopping foot and I didn't want to introduce any pleats or puckers. Finding the path around them to keep them from shifting was a challenge.

I really like these quilting motifs as they aren't too feminine so they worked well on this memorial quilt.

I used Bottom Line in the top and bobbin with a cotton sateen on the back and Hobbs 80/20 for the batting.

I think Linda's customer is going to cherish this quilt. What do you think?

I'm happy to announce that I will be teaching my "Intelliquilter- Beginning Custom Quilting" class on February 5 from 6pm EST to 8:30pm EST. The class is taught with multiple webcams and screen sharing so you can see exactly what I'm doing. This class is $50.

Here are the topics we'll cover in this class:

This class utilizes the Intelliquilter computerized quilting system and is designed for those who own and Intelliquilter system. It covers recording your own designs with pattern designer, placing/sizing motifs in quilt blocks using the quilting machine to mark out block boundaries, combing multiple patterns in a block, adding background fillers behind appliques using both Fan Pattern and Echo Pattern. Tracing around appliques using the machine for no-sew zones. Using Line Pattern for continuous curves and borders. Creating No-Sew Zones as well as creating Clipping blocks will also be included. Using Path pattern for a variety of application will also be touched upon. We will touch briefly on different ways to tackle borders but this topic will be broken out into a seperate class that will be taught at a later date.

This class does not cover pantographs. If you would like the Pantograph IQ class which covers basic operation of IQ, see my other posts announcing that class which will be taught on Feb 4.

Recently my kidlets and I attended family day at the Frasier History Museum in Louisville, Ky.

They have a Civil War exhibit there that my kids found interesting. The entire museum is full of armaments and guns, guns, guns. There is a ton of reading and not much interactivity so my kids breeze through there pretty quick. I couldn't help but wonder how many souls met their death through the implements of destruction contained within that museum's walls.

The most interesting thing to me was the chain mail BirdMan is wearing on his head. It was incredibly heavy and I can't imagine trying to stay seated on a horse swinging a sword while wearing it!

I know there are those who find weaponry fascinating but it certainly isn't me. The only part of the museum I really liked was the part on medieval history. And I loved the performers they had stationed around the place.

Take a look at this bold quilt. It was made by a customer for a man so I knew we'd have to choose a more gender neutral pantograph.

Lime Tree was the perfect choice.

It has the same shapes as the leaves on the fabrics and isn't too girly.

This is one of my most popular patterns.

Bob's Sentimental Tshirt quilt

Bob asked me to make this sentimental tshirt quilt for his wife for Christmas.

Each of the t-shirts are special ones from his kid's that his wife will have a strong memory ties for his wife.

Many of the shirts were ones his children had hand painted so they were especially dear to her.

The center block is an embroidered letter monogram and really made the overall quilt look custom.

I think what put the whole tshirt quilt over the top was the label. What woman wouldn't love to open a gift Christmas morning from her husband with this inscription?

Intelliquilter Internet Based Class Registration Now Available

I will be teaching an internet based Intelliquilter 101 class Saturday, January 21 at 6pm EST. This class is meant for the new Intelliquilter system owner.

This class is meant for the Intelliquilter owner who needs more training and guidance with their system from square one. The information in this class is the same information you would have received from your dealer when your IQ system was installed. If you have already received that training and are comfortable with the information you got from your dealer at install, this class will be redundant for you.

This class will focus on basic buttons, maintenance and how to set up pantographs. It will last 2.5 hours. No custom features will be covered in this class. A future class, IQ 102, will cover custom quilting, borders and will briefly touch upon the more advanced features of IQ like no-sew zones, path pattern, etc.

This class is provided free to all of my Intelliquilter customers. If you purchased your IQ from me, please contact me to get your free invite to this class.

The cost of this class is $50 and will run from 6pm EST to 8:30 EST on Saturday, January 21. Please look over the technological requirements below before I send you a PayPal invoice for tuition. You need to be sure your home computer is equipped to participate.

Butterfly Irish Chain

I had great fun with this Irish Chain. It was pieced with a dramatic red backing so the quilting really shows up well.

My new favorite type of feather is what I'm calling a tuxedo feather. It adds a point in every other feather plume is is so easy to do.

I wasn't sure what to do in the outside borders as the fabric is so busy that I wanted to enhance the printed motifs rather than ignore them. I decided to make a loop in the center of each flower and then echo around the outside portion of the flower before heading off to the next motif. It worked out quite well.

Inside the Irish chain I did straight line quilting with concentric circles.

The spaces between the chain were filled with a dramatic butterfly.

This quilt took a long time to do but it was so beautiful when it was finished. This one was a very large quilt!

Snowmen from A to ZZZ Embroidered Quilt

If you enjoyed the Thanksgiving themed embroidered heirloom from yesterday, you'll love this redwork snowman quilt.

Each letter of the alphabet is represented and the quilting is custom.

I added in swirling snow to the background of each block and went around each of the snowmen to give them definition.

The outside border is snowflakes and the whole thing turned out great!

This quilt is sure to be an heirloom.

Over the River Embroidered Quilt

I can't imagine the hours and hours spent doing the hand embroidery on this quilt. My customer used the time in the car during traveling to stitch out each block.

She doesn't even consider herself more than a 'beginner'!

I assured her she certainly was more than a beginner. :)

She wanted an all over, edge to edge pantograph on this quilt so we chose a skinny, skinny thread that would sink into the fibers when going over her embroidery.

The pattern she chose is a meandering maple leaf that works well with her theme and the color of thread blends in perfectly with the fabrics.

She made this as a gift. Someone got a wonderful present!

Hearts, Irish Chain, Feathers and light switches

Take a look at all the white space on this quilt where I got to play!

My intake notes for this quilt read, "Feather the heck out of it".

Here's the result and it looks great. I did a feather curl design zig zagging with the Irish Chain.

The outside border has a heart and feathers to connect it to the center portion of the quilt top.

She LOVED it!

The kids and I made these light switch covers for our new house. We took some modge podge and scrap book paper to cover the switches. They look so artistic and beautiful on the wall.

Memorial Quilt for Little Boys Family

I've been working on this quilt for a while. Each block is made from the clothes of a little boy who died almost 40 years ago from cancer.

His family has kept his clothing in a box and finally decided it was time to have a keepsake made from the clothes. There are 72 blocks and I tried to select a portion of the clothing that showed wear, stains or other testaments to the life of a typical toddler.

As a mom, this was a difficult quilt to make, especially at this time of year. My heart aches for what this family has gone through every holiday season since they had to say goodbye to their son.

I had photos printed on fabric of him and the blocks around the photos are made from the fabric in the pictures.

Instead of plain fabric for the backing, I pieced together the baby blankets so the entire quilt could be made as much as possible from the belongings of this baby boy.

I got an email a few days after Christmas from the dad and he thanked me for working on this memorial quilt for him. He said his wife loved it and that made my day!

Mary's Tshirt Quilt For Her Son

Take a look at how much work Mary put into making this great Tshirt quilt for her son. What a labor of love, eh?

I will occasionally have people call me asking how much it would be to take 100 shirts and cut only small bits of each one to make a tshirt quilt. They have no idea how much work goes into piecing all of those smaller pieces together into the final quilt.

It is always fun to take a look at the shirts that were important to someone and I got a kick out of the tiny portion of a shirt from a "Do-In".

I went to Harvey Browne Presbyterian Church when I was a teen and every year we had a retreat called a "Do-In" out at a camp. We played games, went swimming and typical church youth group activities at the retreats. It was always so much fun and I have fond memories of the fun had during those times. What a great little trip down memory lane this quilt gave me!

Mary is giving it to her son for Christmas and chose the basic meander which is always a super choice to allow those shirts to be the star of the quilt.

Sarah's Picnic Square Quilt

Sarah made this modern quilt as a wedding gift. I really love the color palette she used. It is romantic without being girly and sophisticated too.

She chose Lime Tree as the all over pattern she wanted quilted and it is a great gender neutral pattern. Some pantographs can be overtly feminine but not this one. Plus, it has the leaf shapes in the pattern that match well with the nature themed fabrics in the top.

The couple who gets this top will enjoy it for years to come!

Take a look at the kitten we are fostering for the local no-kill kittie shelter. His name is Zeus and he's out to conquer the world. He is currently looking for minions to do his bidding and will be the center of a lucky family's universe soon. He's fuzzy goodness!

Terri's special gift for her sister

Terri works at one of my local quilt shop gems, Among Friends Quilt Shop. She made this tshirt quilt for her sister for Christmas and is incredibly sentimental to her. I was honored that she asked me to quilt it for her.

She explained to me that her sister lost a baby years ago and ever since then the entire family participates in the March of Dimes walk a thons.

She has been collecting shirts each year and put them all into a snuggle quilt this year as a gift for her sister.

Terri chose the basic meander for her top and it allowed the shirts to be the stars while the quilting recessed into the background.

What a wonderful gift to find under the tree. So much love and support is wrapped up into each of those shirts!

High School Boy's quilt and Pretty Wedding Quilt Gift

I'm trying really hard to finish my customer's Christmas quilts early this year so I can have a Holiday too.

Here's Mille's quilt for her grandson. He goes to a local Catholic Boys High School. Can you guess the colors? :)

She got a kick out of the fact that my longarm quilting machine is named Mille too!

Mille choose the budget value meander for her quilt and it will hold up great to the utilitarian use it will get on a teen boy's bed.

I know it isn't very original. After all, my machine is an APQS Millennium but the name Mille just seems to fit her. And I've no doubt she is a girl! She never lets me down and we don't argue. When I talk to people at shows who are frustrated with the machines they have it makes my heart ache. If you are going to spend this much money on a quilting machine it should just WORK, right?
