Whether you prefer the lively beach scene with rockin’ nightlife or a peaceful getaway without noise pollution from partying holiday goers, Koh Samui has a place for you.

As a habit, I often look up reviews of what people have to say about a place. I find it the most honest way to really get to know what a place have to offer. For such a popular vacation choice, there are some tourists who had felt let down or betrayed during their stay in Koh Samui. After reading their ranting, it dawned on me that we cannot really fault a paradise island like Koh Samui. So what went wrong?

It's definitely too many a crowd here ><

Many bad comments lament on the fact that the island is too overcrowded with tourist and it has been developed into everything touristy to generate income from foreigners. The rich Thai culture is nothing but an empty shell at Koh Samui because it had all been sucked dry by money-making. There was also mention of overpriced food and what-nots. If I’m not a savvy research nut as I am, I would definitely have crossed out Koh Samui as a recommended holiday spot. But I beg to differ here.

Choosing a vacation venue can be really tough when we lack the knowledge of the place. We must first understand what type of holiday we’re seeking before choosing a place to go. Though Koh Samui can be tagged as a very touristy place, it does preserve some of its hidden treasures for those who seek a low-key getaway. The key to loving it all at Koh Samui is to understand what it has to offer.

Getting to know what Koh Samui has to offer...

For those of you who seek to mingle with the crowds and want to pick up a few babes or dudes, Chaweng and Lamai is the place for you to go. Chaweng and Lamai are the sandy strips on Koh Samui known for being the happening place with all noise and parties you could ask for. Restaurants, bars, clubs, and the holiday crowds will gather here to unwind and have a blast. But for those who want a quiet, peaceful holiday, head away from this two places.

Be left alone with glee on Thong Krut Beach

Most of the smaller coastal villages are still untouched at Koh Samui. Take a look at Thong Krut on the south coast and Maenam in the North. They still give you a nice feeling where you’ll be uninterrupted by other tourist. The locals there will give you their gentle smile and you can perhaps chat up with them and they’ll share with you other hidden gems in Koh Samui.

Enjoy the simplicity at these humble chalets at Maenam Beach

Nathon, the island’s capital is a great place to experience the Thai culture. It is nowhere near as touristy as Chaweng and has great food, a lively market. Every evening, there are lots of local food stalls set up at the ferry car park harbour front where you can eat well alongside the locals for a few baht only.

Eat with the locals and get a taste of the real Thai flavour

These places are only a few I get to mentioned here and there are definitely more to come. Once you get to know and understand the various locations in this paradise island, you’d be sure to love it all at Koh Samui.

Part 4 : Food-Hunting in Siem Reap

Are we going around the globe or what?! Haha! Now that we're already hunting in Siem Reap... I'm sure some of us might be wondering what to eat in Siem Reap. Well, there are loads of good local delicacies there. And for sure, tempting enough for me to try.

When I always travelling with PYO Travel, I was brought to a local restaurant which serve mouth-watering local dishes and also a presentation of Khmer traditional dance show at the same time. That was quite an interesting (yummy) experience! Haha!

1) Amok

This is so much similar to the Malaysian version otak-otak! Nicely steamed and grilled in banana leaves. They use catfish meat to make this delicacy. Good & tasty!

2) Sngou Trolach Nyuk Bongkong
Never mind the spelling and pronunciation. I simply call this stuffed gourd with minced meat & prawns. The gourd was fresh and the prawns as well. Very nice to eat with rice. The soup was clear and very sweet.

3) Bok Lahong
A very simple and mouth-watering appetizer. Sweet and sour, with a bit of spicy. Extra points for the crunchy texture from the peanuts, cucumber and raw papaya. Simply irresistable!

4) Somlor Machu Kreung Ktih Sach Chrook
I love kangkung! This is a dish specially made for me! Haha! With some ribs and beef tendon, the flavour just rush into your mouth. You can also taste some lemon grass and assam in the soup.

Had a great time there in Siem Reap and let not the food-hunting spirit stop! I used to travel online when there’s not enough budget to do the real thing until one day, I discovered that I can visit certain wonderful attractions for FREE!

Being a Chinese, I was quite skeptical initially as there’s a Cantonese saying that goes something like this “Cheap things, not good; Good things, not cheap”. I was apprehensive when I heard about these ‘free’ attractions. Are these so-called attractions worth visiting? Are they free because they want to force you to buy something while you’re there? The best way to find out about these places is to read reviews! So here’s what I found out about this Too-Good-To-Be-True-But-Is-Real-And-Awesome-Free-Attraction right in the heart of metropolitan London – The British Museum.

Norman Foster’s stunning glass-covered Great Court

British Museum allows its visitors to literally travel around the world. Not only that, you can travel back in time to learn about the rise and fall of some of the world’s greatest civilizations. This landmark museum is founded in 1753 and is home to over seven millions exhibition-worth objects collected from the whole world that bring you on a journey of exploration, discovery, and enjoyment.

Visiting British Museum can become an overwhelming experience if you’ve only visited our own Malaysian local museums. British Museum is HUGE. To really see everything in this museum, it’ll take you more than a day. But don’t worry; if you’re afraid about getting lost in the numerous corridors and exhibitions rooms, there are daily gallery tours as well as guided tours. If you’re adventurous and would like to explore in your own style, just grab a map and an audiotour headset available in various language, and you’ll be all set to go.

Click for a larger image to see the sections of the British Museum

One thing you must see is the world renowned Rosetta Stone, the valuable key to the decipherment of hieroglyphs. Perhaps it may just look like a plain old stone with inscriptions on it, but the Rosetta Stone has helped lead the discovery and understanding of the Ptolemaic era (before about 332 BC) and laid the foundations of our knowledge of ancient Egyptian language and culture.

Rosetta Stone

If you are a big fan of the movie “The Mummy”, you’ll be sure to be thrilled on the journey into the Mummy at British Museum. Every one of the mummies in this museum was once a living, breathing Egyptian who had gone through about their everyday life. Studying these mummified people tells us about their way of lives thousands of years ago. There are Egyptian mummies which had been in the museum for more than a hundred years and remained sealed. This is because unwrapping the mummies can badly damage them. Yet, with the current amazing technology, there are images that are taken of the inside of the mummies without having to open up the case.

Seeing a real mummy and its inside too!

If mummies are too scary for you (I know, they’re dead people), there’s a very pretty exhibition that shows Chinese ceramics. You’ll be captivated by the marvelous workmanship transforming ordinary clay into fine porcelains which record the imagination of people throughout history an across the globe. Just be really careful and no running at this exhibition room as not to shatter any of these priceless pieces of art.

Looking at pretty things - Chinese ceramics exhibition

Though the British Museum is said to be free, there is a periodical special exhibition which changes according to its set dates in the museum’s events calendar. It cost from £8.00 (about RM50). Right now, the special exhibition focuses on Indian summer season celebrating Indian culture up until end of August 2009. You can see vibrant illustrations depicting the palace life and pleasures of the Royal court telling stories of Indian epics.

The pleasurable lifestyle of the Indian Royal court

Alright, for me to tell you about every inch of the museum is simply not possible. Gudeg Yogya
This is a dish where the locals eat as staple food. Gudeg Yogya is similarly as famous as Nasi Kandar to Penang. To be exact, it’s a plate of white rice, served with some specially cooked young nangka (jackfruit) slices in herbs & coconut milk, some stew chicken meat and eggs. Some even add-on some beancurds and vegetable to do some extra bits for their customers.

2. Nasi Langgi
Here’s another rice dish. Served on banana leaf (to enhance the aroma), with some fried beef (locally known as ‘empal’), preserved beef (‘abon’), potato cakes (‘perdekel’), stew egg and ‘sambal’. To me, it’s a ‘nasi lemak look-alike’ except for the ‘abon’ which we don’t get it here in Malaysia.

3. Ayam Goreng Kalasan
Yummy crispy golden fried chicken! Marinated with garlic, coriander and other herbs for taste and aroma. Must try!

4. Bakpia Pathuk
A snack most of us would like to get as souvenirs for our family or friends. Actually, it is rather similar to the “Tambun Pneah” from Penang. I like the original green bean type most. There are also some other taste like chocolate and cheese.

5. Wedang Ronde
Reminds me so much of ‘tangyuen’ (glutinous rice balls). A bowl of ‘wedang’ is served in warm ginger soup along with some peanuts. You can usually get them from push-cart vendor at night. The taste? Love it!

I bet most of us would not know that we have so much in common with Jogjakarta food. These groups of minorities have a very different view on the meaning of ‘beauty’.

Just because of this contradictory perspective of ‘beauty’, they have drawn so many people from all around the world to just either shamelessly stare at them, curiously talk to them, dedicatedly try to understand them, make a human/cultural interest story out of them, or even make some timeless documentary to record this unique group of people.

Of cause, what is beautiful always lies in the eye of the beholder. As pictures are often worth more than a thousand words, let me cut short from being so long winded trying to explain to you in words on their idea of beautiful. So…

Is she beautiful?

These minority tribes of people are actually groups formed from many different tribes who have their very own distinctive language and costumes. The more well known ones are known as the Paduang, a sub-group from the Karen tribe.

They originate from Eastern Burma, near the Thai Border, where conflicts with the military regime in the early 1900s have caused many of these people fled to neighbouring Thailand, living in exile. When asked, they do not really mind, in fact are quite happy with the peaceful simple lifestyle they led there as compared to the chaos back in Burma.

Wearing brass coils as early as 5 years old.

The people from these hill tribes view that women with ‘long neck’ are beautiful. Starting at the age of 5, little girls will start wearing these heavy brass rings around their neck. As they age, more brass rings will be added. These coil rings around their neck gives us the illusion that their neck is really long, but the truth is, it is the collarbone that is crushed and the ribcage get pushed down to create this ‘long neck’ look. The average weight of these brass coils that an adult woman wear can range between 3-4kg and they wear them while they sleep, eat, work, and play. It hardly gets taken off.

Skillful weavers

The village

You can find most girls in the tribe wear these heavy brass coils. When asked why they wear these heavy coils around their neck, they simply explain that it is part of their cultural identity. This determination in them to keep their cultural identity is actually the fact which contributes to their survival, bringing throngs of tourist to see them and created an income source for them in tourism. While the men of the tribes do farming, the women are skillful crafts makers, excellent weavers, and are able to sew you the most intricate design where many would not hesitate to get a piece as a souvenir to bring back home.

A memorable experience with the simple, warm and friendly hill tribes.

A visit to Karon Long Neck Villages is truly a worthwhile trip as you get to walk around the tranquil village sites, watching children at play, men hard at work, while women tend to their stalls. Let me get myself a cup of really hot chocolate on this rainy day… before I share with you guys & gals the 'makan' place in Ho Chi Minh City… I still remember the first day I stepped onto the land of Ho Chi Minh, I was already hunting for dining places there. Simply because I'm a dedicated food lover and I crave for them every minute… I like to be adventurous, trying out new things whenever I can. Eating the same thing over and over again everyday is like – BORING! Moreover, I was in a new environment, so I did not waste the opportunity to hunt for something new and refreshing!

1) Deep Fried Elephant Ear Fish

Fear not to try this strange-looking fish. It may look weird (and scary at times) but wait 'til you taste it. *Two-thumbs up!* It’s actually a type of relatively big-sized fish called Elephant Ear Fish fried with its scales on. 3 simple words – crispy, tasty and yummy!

2) King Prawns

Look at how big the prawns can actually grow! Well, if I'm not wrong, I found them "dead" in Ben Thanh Market. To my surprise, the price was rather reasonable. Basically, you can have them served in Vietnamese style, served with some special sauce of lime + salt + pepper + chili powder. (I guess this sauce is really "THE" special sauce as it's generally found in most dishes in Vietnam).

3) Shrimp Spring Rolls

In short, shrimp popiah. Like those I shared with you in my previous post about Hanoi, these were similar but fresh shrimps, instead of chicken meat, were wrapped in the thin rice paper roll. Together in there were some fresh lettuce and vegetable which added the extra texture to the spring rolls a.k.a. popiah.

4) Vietnamese Drip Coffee

The first time I saw this, I thought to myself, do I have to wait until the night falls just to taste a sip of the ever-famous Vietnamese coffee? Eventually I was wrong. Of course you wouldn't need to wait long for the coffee to drip. It's actually a way Vietnamese relax while stealing some time to enjoy their favourite cup of drink. Must try! Options : Kopi (with milk) or Kopi-O (no milk)!

My goodness! I need another cup of hot chocolate! My stomach is growling again… (although it’s just after tea time). Could it be because of the tempting food/drink I'm writing on? Wait 'til I fly to Ho Chi Minh again (for the king prawns and coffee)… with PYO Travel (of course!)... Ciao!

Thanks Jacqueline for the beautiful photos!

Catching Albert Lee on Video...

Watch it on our YouTube Channel,
http://www.youtube.com/user/mypyotravel

Groove with the Young and Trendy at Ximending

The hip and trendy at Ximending

Are you young (or at least young at heart), fashionable, trendy, and hippy? If you answer ‘Yes’ to all the mentioned descriptions, you got what it takes to be seen at Taipei most popular, trendy upbeat shopping haven! If Tokyo has its Ginza, New York City has its Broadway St, then Ximending is definitely the ‘it’ place for Taipei. This hot spot is choke-ful of shops selling everything a youngster could ask for. Be it fashion, fast food, tattoo, piercing, sunglasses, sneakers, snacks, CDs, magazines, movies, theatre shows……you can basically find everything here that fits the ‘cool’ bill for a hippy, hormone-raging youth. Well, I know I mentioned Ximending is a shopping haven, but for a light traveler like me, I’ve managed to learn to curb the shopping maniac side of me when I go see the world. All because it just look so-not-cool to walk out of the airport/bus station/ train station carrying loads of bags, looking tired and haggard just handling the load, even before any sightseeing starts. So yeah… no shop-until-I-drop indulgences on traveling trips for me. (Unless it’s specifically a shopping trip!)
What is youth culture without grafitti?

So what do I do at a place like Ximending with no intention to shop? Worry-not. The sights itself is enough to steal my soul away. Ximending dates back to the Japanese era when it rules Taipei. It has developed and grown with time, filling up the need for fashion and entertainment for the people. Trendy and upbeat as it is, Ximending has an underlying solid tone that tells you that though it serves the young and feeds the youth culture; it has no doubt successfully hidden itself as a true old grandpa place, ever so faithfully dishing out candies to passing youth.

My favourite cheapest travel itinerary: people-watch

With storefronts covered in kitschy neon lights, naked wire, artsy graffiti, and jumble of colours, it makes a perfect study for the ‘art of raking up a new look’ for an old historical place. If you look carefully into the street alleys, away from the crowd, you’d find the edgier side of Taiwan’s youth culture where they truly work and shop. It’s a discovery of the true Ximending, on how life can be, in an alleyway right in the heart of Taipei city, building an understanding for a culture, dissecting the similarities or differentiation of lifestyles, away from what you see at home.

Be wowed and entertained by street stunts & performances!

Besides the alleyways, the crowds make a great opportunity to do people-watching. At the pedestrian streets of Ximending, you’d see youth parading around at their best. Though it may be somewhat different to what I’d normally wear when I was their age, but hey! Don’t discriminate, being a youth is all about being different.

Thank God they're doing this on the street during day light time! (Street shows)

I often get amused with the most bizarre way of dressing up that a person can get away with. What can look totally dynamic and stylish on one person can just totally make another look so ‘off’. I used to drab myself in safe boring colours and shapeless big Ts, until my very own dad got fed up with me and insist upon the role of my personal fashion advisor. I couldn’t help but smile watching teens in their choice of style, and I wonder what their parents think.
Get lucky to run into celebrities' CD albums launches

Walking along the streets at Ximending is definitely a must if you want to feel of the vibe of youth culture in Taipei. With random street performances, music CDs launches from hip atiste, small concerts, this is certainly not a place to have the chance to feel bored with. Ximending is there for what it serves in the first place: to entertain. Find great travel deals to Taipei at PYOtravel.com Photos credit to Flickr contributors.

Food-Hunting in Macau

Gosh… food hunting in Macau was FUN! So many that we can eat there but the following three are the most famous ones in Macau. Not that I am exaggerating or something but they are simply irresistible.

1) Portuguese egg tarts

I think I've mentioned them in my previous post. But I'm definite that once you've tried one, you would want to put another one in your mouth right away. Simply marvelous! Smooth and soft egg custard surrounded by layers of fine thin crispy layered skin. Its skin and the egg custard blend well and with just one bite, it melts in no time.

2) Steamed Milk Pudding

For milk lovers – You can’t say NO to this bowl of tempting dessert. Try a bowl of steamed milk pudding and you'll fall in love... (once again). They even give you the option of serving them hot or cold. To me, I love BOTH! Its silky smooth texture and strong milky flavour give the 'magical' touch to this simple dish. For those who love something extra, you can try their ginger steamed milk pudding. This won't disappoint you as well.

For non milk lovers – No worries, have a bowl of their egg custard pudding. Gosh, I can't describe this in words, but the soft and smooth texture of the egg custard is something you can never find elsewhere. Taste – brilliant! Not too sweet. Ngam ngam hou! (Just nice in Cantonese) Every mouthful of the custard excites your taste buds. Reminds me of the colourful nutty chocolates – melt in your mouth, not in your hands!

3) Pork chop bun

Frankly speaking, I do not eat pork due to personal health reason. But, I can tell you how aromatic this big chunk of meat was when they were being sizzled on the pan. The whole shop was being "seasoned" with the aroma of the cooking meat. I assume it's a version of Macau's very own burger. A piece of finely marinated fried pork chop, served in between slices of buns. According to my "carnivorous" friends, they love the bun more than anything! Hmmm… I can tell it when by just looking at their face while they were taking a bite of the huge Macau burger.

Oh gosh! Just to share with everyone, my favourite animals are the sea turtles. There are quite a number of turtle species like the green turtle, leatherback, Hawkbill’s turtle and many more. I adore all of them. I think they are such a graceful creature, swimming across the deep blue sea, passing through immeasurable waves with one thing in mind; to reach its destination safely. However, sea turtles are facing the most dangerous threat of all animals – EXTINCTION! Not only we (and our children) would not be able to see a real sea turtle in the future, it would also affect the whole life chain of the environment if its extinction happened. We must curb animal extinction fast!

One way is to be alert in all our doings and habits. Simple steps like keeping our environment clean, avoid using plastic bags and throwing them into the river or sea, stop using polystyrene containers and many more. Another thing that you can do is to instill your love to Mother Nature and she will love you back. Let me share with you some animals in Perth which equally deserve our generous love and care.

Koala is one of the national ‘emblem’ of Australia. They live on trees and feed on eucalypt leaves. The hairy creatures are so adorable that children and adults love them so much.

Koala playing Peekaboo... (Photo credit : jenontheedge)

Emu, the second ‘emblem’ of Australia, is a non-flying bird which can run fast! To me, it looks similar to an ostrich but smaller, hairier and has 3 toes (while ostrich has only two)!

Hairy Emu... (Photo credit : Ray Drew)

Another ‘emblem’ of Australia would be the kangaroo. This cute creature has a strong tail which help them to jump further and faster. A female kangaroo has a pouch on its body where baby joey sits.

"Mama, let me go in!" (Photo credit : Ray Drew)

A cute little creature like wombat is not to be missed when you are in Perth. It looks similar to a hamster but is much bigger in size. Wombats also carry their babies in a pouch on its body except that the pocket is facing backward. This is to avoid sands and dirt from getting into the pocket, making their babies dirty when they are digging the soil. Smart isn’t it?

"I am big <s>hamster</s> wombat" (Photo credit : Ray Drew)

"Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree,
<align="center">Merry merry king of the bush is he…"

To some (especially scouts of older generation), you might be familiar with this song. I remember my father singing this song to my sisters and I when we were little kids. He used to sing this song during his scouting era too. Kookaburra is a relatively big bird which can be found in Australia. They are carnivorous and I heard they sing well too!

King of the bush! (Photo credit : George Aitken)

All these lovely animals can be found in the Perth Zoo, a great place for nature enthusiasts and animal lovers, like me, to get closer to such animals under proper supervision and protection. I believe we all have our own part and responsibility in protecting the nature and environment for a better tomorrow.

Let’s fly together to wild wild Perth with PYO Travel! Book your tickets online and start playing your part in greening the world.

How will the future of Online Travel be ?

Let me start off by asking you 2 key questions.

What would you expect online travel to be like in year, say 2015 ?

What is most important to you when comes to planning and booking your travels online ?

As far as I am concern (i book my holidays online), whatever that may become the future of online travel, below are still the most important, most fundamental....

Someone do the research for me, summarize for me and can Guarantee me that what I am being offered is the BEST DEAL I can get for that time (I don't want to rely on those vertical search engine that confuse me more than helping me)

I don't mind to be notify whenever there is SOME OTHER Deal that may be relevant to me from time to time...but please Don't SPAM me for every deal !! just like some local mobile service company here that keep on Spamming my phone for ads that makes no sense to me !

Of course, I must have some sort of "protection" just in case my holidays that I booked online encounter discrepancy..such as NO ROOM upon check in at hotel...which can really happen if you are unlucky !

And lastly, REWARD me for booking with the online travel agent, so that the more I buy, the more rewards I can get !!!

What is your wish list for the future of Online Travel ! I’ve been so overwhelmed with work that I barely have time to breathe… 12 hours of work in a single day is simply insane. I feel like I’m in a refugee camp. Work… work… and more work…… Since when have I turned into such a workaholic? Oh… Help me! Save me from this Malaysian workaholic syndrome!

Now don’t misunderstand me for be lazy, I’m actually pretty hardworking, but I play hard too! Everyone who has the opportunity to be my friend has always heard me telling them to take a ‘chill pill’. Well, I have not been taking my own chill pill for awhile. I remember my dose of chill pill has always been taking a trip down south during my semester break. Living amidst KL city’s chaotic lifestyle and atmosphere can get very stressful; the change of scenery being in Singapore is a total divergent for me. Organized and clean at almost everywhere I set my eyes upon, the air in Singapore even bring order to my frenzied lifestyle.

I've chill out right at the steps with the Merlion

You may be wondering why a getaway to Singapore is my dose of chill pill. It all boils down to the feeling of glee which I get when I watch the eternally faster lifestyle pace of Singaporeans. Have you ever experience the feeling of leisure in such a way, where you’d just stand in the middle of a busy MRT station during rush hour, watching people hurried away to their work place, while you have the time of the world just watching, and not have to be in their shoes and rush off to some place?

While people-watching at MRT station brings me amusement, I don’t usually stand there the whole day. There are a few of my favourite chill out spots in Singapore which I enjoy tremendously every time when I visit. And no, this time, I’m not talking about touristy venues. I’m on a ‘getaway’, remember? I do not need to visit yet another mega mall. (Orchard Rd. malls can get pretty overwhelming for me and it’s crowded all the time)

The MRT crowd... Luckily, I'm not one of them!

Being quite a little hippie myself, Bugis is a chill out spot for me. Before you comment to me that it’s another Singapore’s tourist location, let me tell you, it’s different. I find Bugis designed in a more spacious manner, the crowds never get too crazy, and it vibrates a relaxing calming beat. Following the name ‘Bugis’, it is a place where other migrants gather too. That’s how Bugis got started anyway, it adds more flavours and colours in a somewhat sterilize modern ‘city-city’ feeling of Singapore. In this hippy reorganized place, even though there’s 2 pretty big shopping complexes (Bugis Junction & Bugis Village) right off the Bugis MRT station, the little Indian-run laundry dobby, Middle Eastern merchants selling colourful fabrics and other cultural wares stirs the heart of many who gets captivated by the myriad of charming colourful wares they offer.

Indoor open air concept with skylight at Bugis Junction.

Bras Basah, an area part of Bugis, often has budding musicians performing gothic, experimental and other kinds of alternative music at the bars and pubs. Before heading for a drink at one of these pubs/cafes, I’d normally go browse the second hand shops nearly to pick up some good steals of books or some sort of eccentric items. I’m a supporter for second hand items. It helps save the earth, and helps me go easy on my shopping budget.

A great steal of second hand books.

To satisfy more to my hippie self, trying out some different food fares at Arab Street in Bugis can be quite fun. There’s Arab cuisine, Russian cuisine, Indian cuisine, as well as Malay cuisine. I normally pick Arab food as I love their fragrant flavoured rice as compare to the regular white rice that Chinese eat. They also serve you food where you have to sit on the floor and eat off a very low table. To me, it’s all about a different eating experience, a pleasurable change from my regular eat-in-a-rush kind of meal. There’s also nice fruity smelling sheesha (water pipe) too around this area for anyone who enjoys it.

Neat row of shop-houses at Arab street.

Oh well, I’m promising myself to take my chill pill soon before I get burn out. I still remember the only things I saw before landing were big pieces of green lands. Padi fields and greeneries covered near the entire city of Hanoi. (Well, at least, the area around the airport was!)

Hanoi is a place rich with heritage and culture. Let’s explore the different angles of Hanoi!

Buildings
As an ex-French colonial, buildings here carry much French-influenced touches. For instance, you can see churches around which look quite similar to those in France. However, there are some other architectures which feature Chinese-influenced imprints and highlights on them as well. Temples are surrounded by dragons and phoenixes sculptures which highlighted the refined traditional Chinese touches! Also, you will see tall but thin houses scattered around the padi field area. These are houses of the farmers. I was told the taller they are, the richer the farmer.

French-influenced architecture - St. Joseph Church

A lion statue in a temple

Food
Food here is very much down-to-earth. It’s not hard to find fancy western food or Japanese food but the local delicacies here are very much cheaper and special. You can’t find them elsewhere. Don’t worry, it’s not hard to find fast food chain here too. I find that they are very good in preparing seafood dishes! Food here are quite similar to Chinese cooking. Maybe that’s why I find it easier to accept the food here. For dessert lovers, there are a lot of small bakery shops which sell delicious cakes and other types of bread. Small stalls which sell numerous kinds of snacks mushroom around upon sunset. Go ahead and try some tempting local savoury and delicacies. No regrets!

Vietnamese popiah - mixed vege and chicken meat wrapped in a thin slice of crepe

Sweet dessert soup with loads of mixed ingredients - louts seeds, longan, herbs and etc!

Fried crab

Artwork
It’s like a haven of artwork in Hanoi. You can simply pick one shop and you’ll be amazed by the defined and refined artistic display on the walls. I love their wood carving and my heart got captured by their paintings and fine thread art. There are even shops which feature their artists in the hall, working on their masterpieces on the spot. It’s like watching Picasso painting in real life! The ever famous water puppet dolls are also on popular demand. The cute little human-like dolls, made of wood, are very symbolic to Hanoi. Most tourists like to get one for themselves as souvenir. Why not?!

Beautiful dolls in traditional Vietnamese costumes

Potteries

Water Puppets

Souvenirs anyone?!

Hanoi, so calm and peaceful, it is definitely a place for relaxation. PYO Travel has it all for you. It begins at birth, followed by the coming of age, marriage, sickness, and become completed with death.”

Offerings for the deceased

It was only very recent when I heard of the passing of a noted, well-respected film maker in Malaysia. Her name is Yasmin Ahmad. My heart was saddened along with the family members and friends of the departed Yasmin Ahmad as I watched the news broadcast on TV. Death, though inevitable, often catches us by surprise; no matter how prepared we think we are. When a person dies and leave behind their physical body, we can’t help but wonder, what will happen next?

Carrying the deceased in a 'bade'

In Bali, death brings a different meaning. Life does not just end with death. The rituals of funeral rites and cremation play an utmost importance in the stages of life. The Balinese believe that the soul will be freed to begin a new journey when death comes. The soul will be reborn into a future generation. And so, life continues on…

When a Balinese dies, the cremation for the deceased is a joyous one. The whole village will come together to prepare for the cremation. The cremation ritual is a ceremony which purifies and frees the soul from its earthly house and help it set forth to be incarnated. The body will be bathed and prepared as the priest will come and pray and bless the deceased. Meals are also prepared and offered to the deceased as usual to keep the person’s memory alive.

The elaborately decorative base of the cremation tower

The cremation ritual is a costly one. Most often when a family does not have the finances to proceed with the cremation ritual, the body will be buried first until they have saved enough for the event. Sometimes, they will also choose to do a group cremation. The size and elaborateness of the cremation ceremony reflects the wealth of the deceased's family.

The most exciting part of the cremation ritual for a tourist to watch is the procession to the cremation ground. It resembles a community carnival, with marching gamelan bands and people in high spirits. If you have never seen nor understand the ways and culture of a Balinese funerals goings, you might not even guess that it’s actually a cremation march!

The sacred bull-shape sarcophagus

On the day of cremation, an elaborate cremation tower called ‘bade’ will be build. It is made with paper and soft wood. The remains of the deceased will be placed in it as the people will carry it to the cremation ground. Once there, the body/bones will then be placed in a bull-shaped sarcophagus. (Bulls are considered a sacred animal in the Balinese culture) After that, the burning of the tower and sarcophagus will act as a final cleansing. The ashes will be gathered and be cast into the sea in order for the soul to be released and go on to its next life.

The final cleansing for the spirit to be released

Though the cremation ritual is a tourist attraction itself, you will still be advised to cover up and dress appropriately if you want to be there to watch. I believe it will be an interesting and unforgettable experience to witness a Balinese funeral rites. Most people suffer from muscle ache, joint pain, headache and all sorts of body discomfort after focusing on their work (which seem endless) all the time. Why not give yourself some time off and pamper yourself once awhile with a short vacation? That’s the “it” way to recharge yourself nowadays.

Phuket has been popular as a haven of spa. Pampering yourself in a spa treatment during your Phuket escapade is the best choice for indulgence and relaxation. My personal favourite would be the Island Herb Spa which offers comfortable atmosphere, filled with serenity and tranquility, helping me find back calmness and recollect myself. I felt very much pampered by their spa treatments which include steam bath, jacuzzi, body scrub and massage enhanced with enlightening traditional touch. When you are there, don’t forget to pay them a visit just to unwind yourself.

There is another treatment that I would love to share – the traditional Thai Massage. No visit to Phuket is complete without a traditional Thai massage. Thai massage is totally different from any other types of massage. It emphasizes more on applying pressure using the thumbs, fingertips, hands, feet, arms, legs as well as body weight. This deep-massage technique brings total relaxation and rejuvenation, promising complete rest and comfort, for your well-being.

During my previous trip to Phuket, aside from recharging myself with the spa and massage sessions, I managed to visit a few other interesting places which might also interest you! Heard of Wat Saphan Hin? It’s the home for a beautiful structure that you must not miss. From afar, you can see the tall standing Buddha, standing majestically on the hill top. You might need a pair of comfortable shoes for your journey towards the Buddha statue as the path is slightly slanted on a slope. But I can assure you that the scene is definitely amazing! The gigantic statue is surrounded by tall stone poles which are the ruins of its prayer hall.

Besides that, the Chalong Temple is also another magnificent site and it is the most significant Buddhist temple in the island. Its appealing architecture structure with three connecting roofs mesmerized my eye sight. Besides the main prayer hall, there is also the Grand Pagoda nearby. The walls of the pagoda are painted with colourful images which depicts the story of Buddha’s life.

Promthep Cape, the most south point of Phuket, has been the best location to witness sunset. I know there is a lighthouse with an observation level which accommodates greater views of sunset. Spend a romantic evening with your loved ones while bidding farewell to the sun for the day. As Promthep Cape is located beside the sea, you can witness the sky keeps changing colours as the sun falls. This is due to the different light spectrums reflecting from the water, which makes it all worth the wait and effort.

Longing for a break already? Wait no longer! Pamper yourself with some spa treatments and scenic views of Phuket. PYO Travel is always the one for you!

The Pearl of Orient: Hong Kong

I remember learning in geography on Penang being the ‘Pearl of Orient’. That aside, another famous “Pearl of Orient’ in Asia I want to talk about today is none other than HONG KONG.

Situated on the Southeastern coastline of China, Hong Kong is a vibrant city that has grown so great that it has now brand itself as ‘Asia’s World City’. What (used-to-be) British Dependent Territory of Hong Kong consists of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, New Territories and more than 200 outlying islands off the coast of Hong Kong.

3 main Hong Kong districts: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, New Territories

But there are 3 main areas in Hong Kong which attracts the throngs of visitors and tourists to the Pearl of Orient in all seasons, namely Hong Kong Island (also known as Victoria), Kowloon, and New Territories.

1. Hong Kong Island
You will find familiar names such as Central, Western, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Aberdeen, and South Coast in Hong Kong Island. Head over to Central if you want to feel the vibe of government headquarters, financial hub, central transportation hub, and exclusive shopping. Or walk around Western market where you can see the most typical Chinatown of all. Wan Chai is more an artsy district where colourful nightlife and arts centres is offered to its people. Try out at some of the excellent ethnic restaurants there too! If you want to seek a more nature’s cultural experience, Aberdeen is an old fishing port that offers you scenic delights. You can also hang out for a relaxing afternoon at the beaches of Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, or the fishing village of Stanley.

Have a cup of tea at Wan Chai

Old boats at Aberdeen

2. Kowloon
The name ‘Kowloon’ translate to nine dragons. The most famous area of Kowloon is Tsim Sha Tsui. Catch some Hong Kong celebrities at this neon light districts where major shopping (Nathan Road), dining and entertainment areas congregate together to give you the full blast of modern city life rhythm. Another two areas name you should remember is Yau Ma Tai and Mong Kok. You will be fascinated at the many specialty shops and open markets with names such as Ladies Market, Jade Market, Yuen Po Bird Market, Flower Market, Goldfish Market. It’s pretty straight forward when it comes to naming places here and I’m sure it’s not hard to find the places where you want to visit.

Tsim Sha Tsui Street

6 floors for you to shop until you drop!

3. New Territories
Though New Territories cover a large land area, it serves more of a rural retreat to the residents. You’ll be charmed by the traditional villages, walking trails, parks, and temples. It’s not all that backward at New Territories as many chic New Towns are slowly emerging in various areas. You can walk the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail to find out about the stories behind the neighbourhood, make some wishes at Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees and Tin Hau Temple, and be delighted while you explore the streets of Sai Kung.

City Parks

Sai Kung Walking Trail

But most of all, in Hong Kong, no matter where you go, be it Hong Kong Island, Kowloon or New Territories, it is another food heaven that will be sure to make your stomach happy. But I’ll let you explore, and you come back and let me know what’s the best to eat and where to try them! Haha! It’s such an auto-reflex that my instinct connects these items to the letters combination of T-A-I-W-A-N.

In my previous blog about Taiwan, I’ve talked about Taipei and its marvelous attractions. This time around, I would love to share about Wuling Farmstay. Hmmm… Things that appear in my mind when I hear the phrase, “Wuling Farmstay” are green forest, fresh fruits and wooden house. True enough, do expect a lot of greeneries!

Wuling is well-known for its mountainy and hilly landscape. Its cool weather and geographical landscape make it the best place for farming. Wuling is located relatively not far from Taipei city. However, it's got a completely different environment from the busy city of Taipei.

Wuling Farmstay gives you the opportunity to experience staying overnight in the natural environment, being surrounded by grass, flowers and trees. Fresh greeneries such as vegetables and fruits can be found easily here. Actually, if you’re lucky enough, during the fruits season, you can merely pick a ripening fresh fruit like plum, peach and apple from the trees and taste them. It’s the most effective way to shorten the time to market of those fruits!

Besides that, you might also stand a chance to witness wild life, roaming around the forest and trees. Animals like deers, mandarin ducks, butterflies and various species of birds welcome you to Wuling Farm. Colourful flowers such as roses, calla lilies, plum blossoms and pansies, bloom everywhere naturally. I suppose it is like watching your own private channel of National Geography, right in front of you. Isn’t that great?!

I’m sure most would be wondering what kind of rooms to stay in such a natural place? Well, they have hotels there just like any other hotels you can find in town or city area. Basic necessities are well-equipped there and if you want a different experience, try to set up a tent at their camping site, which I think is also another interesting activity to do with your friends and family. Do not worry. There are tents and other camping equipments ready for rental there. Hmmm… I’m thinking of a picnic or campfire at night.

I think a farmstay in Wuling would give you another kind of excitement. The chirpy birds in the day go to bed and I can feel the buzzing rise of the night creatures who will take over the night with me. I think there’s a vampire in me, which shuns the day-light world when it drowns in the merciless sun’s fatal emission. The night is where the vampire queen shall rule.

Be there to feel the pulse of Macau Nightlife

Nights in Macau does not disappoint those who seek pleasure and groove. The steady beat of music accompanies the various exorbitant crazy themed clubs and bar at the Docks. The Docks is the place which will sure send anyone a shivering delight to join in the fun for some bar hopping and snazzy club scenes. You have the choice to be accompanied by showy entertainers, glitzy live dance bands, divvy Portuguese folk dancing, or some world class disc jockeys spinning out some cool beat. The best of these entertainment scenes at the Docks is located around the Avenida Sun Yat Sen. It’s not a hard spot to find as the gigantic bronze statue of Goddess of Mercy positioned there will tell you that you’re at the right place.

The Docks at Macau

Some shout-out spots at the Macau outer harbour are Nicole Fashion Club at Fisherman Wharf, D2 Club and The Sky 21 at AIA Tower, Moonwalk Bar and MP3 at Vista Magnifica Court, Whisky Bar at Star World Hotel. This mega high-tech fountain features laser beam and musical accompaniment along with jets sprouting out dancing water up to 80 meters high into the sky. It is truly one-of-its-kind performance featuring both laser and music performances at different days. The 30 minutes laser performance is on every Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 pm & 9:30 pm while the 1-hour music performance can be enjoyed on Monday to Friday at 1 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm and 9:30 to 10 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, the music performances are at 10 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm and 9:30 to 10 pm.

Wow! I am actually planning for a surprise trip for our next honeymoon there. I am undecided on which part of Australia to go to. Hmmm… could it be Gold Coast? Perth? Melbourne? I couldn't make up my mind 'coz every part has its own attractions and seems pretty tempting to me! I really hope you guys can help me. Anyone been to Australia, I need your advice. I've surfed the Net and found some interesting spots in Melbourne which are really interesting.

Did you know that there are actually penguins in Melbourne? I only got to know this lately. Gosh, what a shame?! (But hey, better late than never) There's this place called Phillip Island a.k.a. Penguin Island, where we can see the little birds at a close distance. I am really attracted to this and I’m sure my wife should be too! We both love cute little animals. So, I guess, the penguins might do the trick. Hehe…

(Original Photos by stowaway)

Another place which tempted me is the Great Ocean Road. I’m sure everyone would be wowed by the beautiful scenery of this place where we can witness the real art of nature. Huge lime stones erecting across the ocean bay, creates a magnificent spot for photography. Another interesting lime stone sculpture is the "London Bridge" of Port Campbell National Park. It is called "London Bridge" because of its shape. According to a website, at first, the "London Bridge" was connected creating two arches but in early 1990, one of the arches collapsed due to long-term erosions and leaving only one arch left now.

(Original Photos by atiiota & Joe Gattuso)

I also heard that the Queen Victoria Market is a place where you can get generally everything you want! That's great news for visitors like me 'coz I'm sure I would want to try out some local delicacies and get a bundle of souvenirs back for my friends. Fresh seafood, shellfish, vegetables, fruits, meat and other groceries are found there. If I were there, I think I would 'help' to boost up the economy of Melbourne by becoming a 'shopaholic' there! Hahaha… Gosh, what a sinful thought?!

(Original Photos by adambalic)

I am seriously considering Melbourne as my surprise honeymoon destination now. What do you think? Any takers? Furthermore, PYO Travel.com is offering some alluring packages which I can't say 'NO' to. Check them out!

CHIANGMAI, here I come!

Pssst..... i just got wind of a fantastic offer that PYO travel is offering. It is continuously teeming with growing populations and new developments at every expandable inch in all the surrounding area. Words that often describe this city consist of noisy, dirty, dense, polluted, congested, dangerous, poor… but put aside these sorrowful descriptions, Manila can be vibrant, exciting, intense, luxurious, lavish, and filled with fun things to do too. Just like any other countries in the world, Manila also boasts many places that are of showcase quality worth visiting.

Welcome to the Walled City of Intramuros

The City of Manila can be separated into 16 districts. The oldest of all is called Intramuros -“The Walled City”. Built in the 16th century by the Spanish, it was once considered Manila City itself. Now, after the devastation of war, this city has become exclusively the only district of Manila where the old Spanish ruling influences were retained as modern development skipped over this district. Within the massive walls of this city stood old vanquishing government buildings, former stately homes, still splendid churches, aged convents, moss-covered monasteries, distinguished educational institutions, and reverberating cobbled plazas. What used to be the old moats were long gone as it is now filled up and serves as a golf course.

Manila Cathedral

Casa Manila (photo by mrbinondo)

To explore Intramuros, head first to the visitor centre at the entrance to Fort Santiago at Santa Clara Street and grab a map and guide book. Exploring The Walled City by foot will bring you on a 4.5 kilometer journey of unearthing the old stories when the Spanish rules. Every square foot of this city holds a unique historical tales of trades even before the Spanish empire’s reign. Spending a full day wandering along the Spanish-named streets is the best way to see things as it is. There’s the Manila Cathedral, Casa Manila, San Agustin Church, Father Blanco Garden, Museum and Library of the National Centre for Culture and Arts are among the few must-see. Just remember that the walk is more advisable to be done during the day as access is limited at night.

San Agustine Church (photo by ~MVI~)

Father Blanco's Garden (photo by twistedhalo)

After a walking trip at Intramuros, next we’ll go to the prowling markets and backstreets of Quiapo, the ‘old downtown’ of Manila. What used to be a thriving fishing village among a complex intersecting rivers, canals, and marches has turned itself into a flourishing center of commerce filled with trade stores. However, the main attraction in Quiapo is not the old streets. It is the Black Nazarene which is housed in the Quiapo Church that draws thousands of devoted worshipers and tourist alike.

Guiapo Church (photo by chicodj)

The best day to visit the Quiapo Church is Friday. Countless devotees will crowd at this church to pay homage to the Black Nazarene. It is touching to see the open humility of the worshipers down on their knees at the alter, fervent in prayer, seeking for a favor, miracle, penance or just praise and thanksgiving. Outside the church is a market place where everything is cheap. Merchandises range from pirated CDs and DVDs, imitation of branded goods, and many local delights. It is exactly the same version of ‘pasar pagi’ in Malaysia, only exchange the goods to Philippines wares, salvation needs products, and many local trinkets. There you can be adventurous and try the wide choice of local street cuisine too.

Religious business (photo by Au Lim)

A trip to the City of Manila can truly be a cultural venture that will open your eyes to the vibrant colours that only it can offer. It is a place that let you feel so deeply, sense so widely, and experience literary exchange of what it truly means to be cultured. Book the trip here and experience that feeling of cultural satisfaction in The Philippines.

An All Natural Koh Samui

Koh Samui, the third largest island in Thailand, is blessed with sandy beaches, beautiful coral reefs and mesmerizing waterfalls, capturing millions of hearts from around the world. It brings you nearer to Mother Nature in your relaxing leisure trip with extreme pleasure.

Beautiful stretch of white sandy beaches is definitely not to be missed. I guess they are too symbolic to Koh Samui that everyone MUST drop by to pay a visit to these “seniors” of the rock world as a sign of respect. These rocks were artistically ‘designed’ by the nature into their current shape and form. The ‘artist’ was so imaginary that he (or she) crafted the Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks into the shape of the human sexual organs.

The Sexy Rocks (Photo credit : Badly Drawn Dad)

Well, if you can’t get enough from the sea, wait till you delight yourself in the Namuang Waterfalls. Elephants were the major mean of transportation in the good old days. They are also considered as a scared animal to most Thais. The Elephant Camp is established to honour the huge graceful creatures where they are being loved and cared for. An elephant ride to bring you around the place is not a bad idea. I wonder how different can you see from the back of the elephant. Also if you’re lucky, you may join in to help to bathe the elephants. You don’t always get a chance to do that.

Let's Partee!!! (Photo credit : brettmarlow1)

Flying there to unwind yourself is no hassle with meticulous packages lined up by PYO Travel.com. Koh Samui, here we come!!!

makan makan in Penang

What's the first thing that pops in your mind when it comes to Penang Island? "MAKAN" of course. Penang being the city of delicious food is a must to visit. The PYO KL team had the opportunity to head up to Penang to meet up with our Penang colleagues. The main reason was to attend the Penang Matta Fair which was held at P.I S.A, the other reason was to indulge in the wonderful, yummilicious food. We left in 2 groups, one got onto the coach at Puduraya, the other group drove.

For the 4 of us that took the coach, the journey was a 5 hour journey to Sungai Nibong's bus terminal. The upside of the journey was that when we arrived, we were treated to one of Penang's famous 'Char Kueh Teow'.

You might have heard about the famous lady on lorong selamat, well being the adventurous group of people, we skip the normality in search for something different. we headed a few shops down to find this little 'kopitiam' ... it's not hard to miss, look for the char kueh teow uncle that wears this really outrages goggles.... (you might not know, the uncle might be some spokesperson for a goggles brand).

The fried kueh teow here was amazingly delicious, once we tasted it, it was the benchmark for all char kueh teows. It is said that this place serves one of the best Fried kueh teow on the island. The prawns that were stir fried together was succulent and absolutely juicy. Definitely mind boggling.

This little "kopitiam" does not only serves char kueh teow, on their menu list, there was fruit rojak, sotong kangkung and a few others.
