It wasn’t until 1986 that Jeff Tunnell began the journey that would make him the unwitting father of the modern survival horror game – an achievement that has gone widely overlooked in the years since. As the co-founder of Dynamix, Tunnell is better known for classics like The Incredible Machine and The Adventures of Willy Beamish, but it was Project Firestart on the Commodore 64 that would prove to be one of his most difficult and most significant accomplishments.

Today, at Adobe MAX Adobe Systems Inc, announced that developers will be able to use Adobe® Flash Professional CS5 to create rich, interactive applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. A public beta of Flash Professional CS5 is expected to be available later this year. In a sneak peek, during the MAX keynote presentation, Adobe demonstrated how developers can utilize Flash Professional CS5 to export applications for the iPhone, leveraging the same source code used to deliver applications across desktops and devices for Flash Platform runtimes – Adobe AIR™ and Flash Player 10. Adobe also showcased a series of new iPhone applications that were built using a beta version of Flash Professional CS5, including Trading Stuff which was developed for the program by PushButton Labs. Trading Stuff In Outer Space was built as an early technology prototype in the initial beta version of Flash Professional CS5.

Developers that created iPhone applications with the beta include Digg, BlueSkyNorth, MTV Networks/Southpark, and others. Several of these new applications are currently available for iPhone users to download within the Apple App Store. The Apple iPhone SDK license terms do not allow runtime interpreted code, so Adobe is not able to deliver Flash Player in Safari on the iPhone without support from Apple. Applications for the iPhone built with Adobe Flash Professional CS5 do not include any runtime interpreted code.

For more information on Trading Stuff (including the free download link from the App store), please check out our micro-product page!

Eugene, OR October 1st, 2009 - Today, PushButton Labs, L.L.C. announced that it has acquired the rights to The Incredible Machine intellectual property in its entirety. The classic physics & puzzle game franchise originally debuted in 1992 and was later followed by several successful sequels selling millions of units. To mark the reacquisition of the property on a happy note, PushButton Labs has placed t of the newly Windows XP/Vista compatible Incredible Machine series for sale on the Good Old Games Website (GOG.com).

“TIM was a genre defining franchise and I could not be happier to have the property available to PushButton Labs. I’m very excited to see what we can do with it moving forward.” said PushButton Labs co-founder Jeff Tunnell, who was the original co-game designer of The Incredible Machine.

Considered by some to be the grandfather of the Physics & Puzzle game genres, The Incredible Machine pitted players against a series of Rube Goldberg style devices which were composed from a wide range of objects such as ropes & pulleys, bowling balls, and even cats and mice.

The Incredible Machine was the winner of several prizes due to its innovative style and simulation abilities. A spin-off of the series, Sid & Al’s Incredible Toons earned Jeff Tunnell and Chris Cole a patent for their game design concepts.

The series is available for sale at the time of this release and can be found online at:

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_incredible_machine_mega_pack

In addition to his work on The Incredible Machine, Tunnell is well known within the gaming industry for successfully co-founding several gaming companies, including Dynamix in 1984 where famous franchises such as Starsiege: Tribes, Trophy Bass, and the 3D Ultra product line were developed. In 2001, Tunnell and partner Rick Overman co-founded GarageGames, makers of the Torque Game Engine and the Marble Blast series, leaving in 2008 to form PushButton Labs.

Engine users are now able to download and easily integrate gameplay, technical, art, and other components into their PushButton Engine based game or application.

Five PushButton Labs authored components were launched along with the store, and user-generated components are quickly anticipated to be listed as they are submitted. Anyone can easily submit a PushButton Engine component to the store to be sold or given away for free.
Box2D

Box2D is one of the best physics libraries out there for Flash. PushButton Engine comes with it already integrated for you. Start using Box2D to drive your game from day one, and integrate your game’s functionality with it easily thanks to PushButton Engine’s component system. Handle events when entities collide and more. Free under the MIT license.

PushButton Networking Component

PushButton Networking integrates with the open source PushButton Engine to provide powerful networking capabilities for Flash games. PushButton Networking provides an efficient networking library, components to easily integrate with your game, and a native server for Windows, Mac, and Linux that uses the Tamarin ActionScript runtime so you can run your ActionScript3 game code on client and server. Create multiplayer Flash Games on PushButton Engine! Indie License for only $49.99.

Rendering2D Component

There are a ton of great rendering, effects, gameplay, and physics systems out there for Flash. But it’s always a big pain to get them to work together. Rendering2D is a common ground for systems like Flint, Box2D, Motor, and more to collaborate. Working as a 2d scenegraph, it gives you just enough abstraction and common ground to wire everything together in a clean way. Free under the MIT license.

Component Pack: State Machine and Health

This free bonus pack gives you two useful building blocks for your game: a health component and a finite state machine. Both of these components are heavily used in our upcoming game, Grunts. Every game needs to track health. The health component does all the book-keeping for you. It dispatches events on the entity when healing or damage occurs. Free under the MIT license.

Ben Garney gave a short interview to GameDev.net about the PushButton Engine at GDC 2009 in March. The interview just went up on their site and can be found by clicking this link. Here is a good quote from the interview:

…we knew early on we wanted to do Flash games - it’s a key, growing game development platform. You can run it on netbooks or consoles or high-end desktop PCs, and you can port easily to iPhone, mobile devices, things like this. A big market. As we looked around, we noticed there were a lot of really great game development libraries out there, but using them together was complicated. So our first order of business was to build some technology to make it easy to integrate other people’s code - these great libraries - and that’s what become the core of PushButton Engine.

Basically, our idea is - here is a way to build games out of reusable components and get lots of different libraries to work together. Everyone will benefit from that. It’s a better way to build games. So let’s get it out there are much as possible for everyone to use… which is why we used the MIT license, to make that safe for people.

Today, we have release version 1.5 of the OnePress Theme Framework for WordPress. This release comes on the heals of the newest version of WordPress (version 2.8) being unveiled. The newest version of WordPress has made a number of changes in the code to change authentication and widget APIs for theme and plug-in developers. Due to these updates, we will not be supporting phpBB integration with OnePress as of this release. The download for OnePress 1.5 still contains functionality for those of you still operating under WordPress 2.7 and wish to remain using that. This release of OnePress is compatible with both versions 2.7 and 2.8 of WordPress.

As far as our plans for continued community development, we plan on leveraging the powerful bbPress system for our future projects at PushButton Labs and have so far liked what we’ve seen! If you were using the phpBB integration for your community, we suggest looking into bbPress if you wish to continue using forums on your site.

If you have the phpBB module active in OnePress, please do the following before upgrading to WordPress 2.8. It is important that you change the authentication method in phpBB to the original “db” method. Since OnePress has kept WordPress and phpBB databases were kept in sync while acting as the active auth method, you should not have to worry about losing any login functionality with phpBB. However, as when doing any changes, we ask that you please update your database first. To change your phpBB login method, simply navigate to your phpBB Administration Panel -> Authentication and for the authentication method, choose “db.”

If you have found yourself in a position where you have upgraded before changing the phpBB authentication method to “db,” read here to learn how to fix this issue.

Concerning new functionality in WordPress 2.8, the only change visible to you, the user, is the method in which widgets are handled. Previously, WordPress required you to work on sidebar widgets on a per sidebar basis. Now, all of the sidebars are displayed at the same time. Due to this, the sidebar copy and pasting functionality of OnePress has changed a little bit. The interface now prides a highlight on the selected sidebar. So now, you click the sidebar you wish to copy, click copy, select the sidebar on which you wish to paste, and click paste! It’s that simple!

You can download OnePress Community for Wordpress from http://onepresscommunity.com
