Sarasgad Fort:-
Sarasgad is a village situated near Pali in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Pali lies along the Lonavala-Khopoli road and is 110 kilometres from Pune.

The village contains Sarasgad Fort, the twin of Sudhagad Fort. It can be identified by its four pinnacles and thus was mainly used as a watch place to check the surrounding region. The construction of the fort is not in good condition but the huge rock steps are something to watch for. There are two routes which lead to the top of this fort from Pali. On the top is the Shiva temple providing an excellent panoramic view of all the mountain ranges surrounding this area. Sudhagad and TailBaila can be easily view from the top of Sarasgad.

This fort height from sea level is 490 meters. There are many caves which were used for soldiers and other purposes because the fort has very little area available on its top. There are around ten tanks carved in rocks. They provide cool water supply throughout the year, which is very important for any fort. Shivaji Maharaj gave 2000 hones for repairing the fortifications of this fort. On the way from the south there are 111 steps carved in stone. The door from this side is known as 'Dindi darvaja'.

Shivneri Fort:-
Shivneri Fort is a historic military fortification located near Junnar. It is the birthplace of Shivaji.

Shahaji, Shivaji's father, was a general in the army of the Adil Shah, Sultan of Bijapur. He was concerned for the safety of his wife Jijabai during her pregnancy as there was constant warfare going on. He therefore moved his family to Shivneri fort. Shivneri is a highly defensible location, with steep rocks on four sides and a strongly built citadel.
Shivaji was born at the fort on 19 February 1630, and spent his childhood there.he got his name SHIVBA here. Inside the fort is a small temple dedicated to the goddess Shivai Devi, after whom Shivaji was named.
There are statues of Jijabai and young Shivaji. At the centre of the fort is a water pond which is called 'Badami Talav'. To the South of 'Badami Talav' are the statues Jijabai and a young Shivaji. In the fort there are two water springs, called Ganges and Yamuna, which have water throughout the whole year. Two kilometers away from this fort there are the Lenyadri caves which is one of Ashtavinayak temple in Maharastra.

Raireshwar Fort:-
Raireshwar is situated in Bhor Taluka near Pune, India. Raireshwar has a temple famous for its historical importance. The temple is very old and of stone structure, uut it was later re-constructed in 18th century. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took the oath of Hindavi Swarajya in this temple at the age of 16 in 1645 and then created history. Its said that he had cut his little finger and taken the oath by dripping blood onto the Shivling. There is a large portrait of Shivaji Maharaj and his friends inside the temple. Thus, Raireshwar can be considered as an important place in Maratha history. It is situated in between various hills and forts such as Kenjalgad. The temple is on a plateau, which is full of beautiful flowers during monsoon. Best season to visit this place is Monsoon.

It is said that Shivaji Maharaj took an oath of ‘Swarajya’ on this fort. However no historical proofs are available to confirm this statement.

Palgad Fort about one and a half acres in area, stands on the crest of a high hill on the north-west boundary of Khed. In 1862, it was in ruins, with nine old useless guns, of which there is no trace today. It is said to have been built by Shivaji and was taken in 1818 by the British. Panhalagad:-
also known as Panhalgad, Pahalla and Panalla is located in Panhala, 20 kilometres northwest of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India. It is strategically located looking over a pass in the Sahyadri mountain range which was a major trade route from Bijapur in the interior of Maharashtra to the coastal areas.

Past Details:-
The fort was built during the regime of the First Shilahar king Bhoj Nrupsingh. In the olden days it was ruled by people of tribal caste Nag and was known as Pannnagralya. After the assassination of Afzalkhan, Shivaji Maharaj took advantage of weakening of Adilshahi and won Panhalgad in just 18 days (on 28th November 1659). It was further captured by Adilshah, but the Marathas regained the fort. On 2nd March 1660, Siddhi Johar set the siege to Panhalgad. We are aware of the famous incidence where Shivaji Maharaj crossed the God Khind and went to Vishalgad. At that time Panhalgad was captured by Siddhi Johar. In 1673, Kondaji Farjand captured the fort with just 60 soldiers. In 1710, Panhalagd became the capital of Kolhapur. It was captured by British in 1844. The fort has a great history and trekkers have a lot to learn from that.

MRUGAGAD FORT :- A DAY TOUR FROM PUNE / MUMBAI

Khandala – Lonavla are famous for monsoon treks, waterfalls and trips. We are familiar with Tiger Valley on the way to Bhushi dam. Mrugagad is situated in the Tiger Valley. The way to reach this fort is from Khopoli.

Fascinating Spots :
Mrugagad is a small fort, and it takes around one hour to see it. On the way to the top, there is a cave which is bit tough to ascend. There are some water tanks and a small pond on the fort. There are some water tanks on the summit. We can find some remnants of old houses. Since Umbarkhind and Waghdari can be seen from the top, it was used to keep a watch on these areas and the surrounding villages.

Ways To Reach :
We have to reach Khopoli station. From there, we can get share rickshaw for Lonavla Phata. From here, we have to take share six-seater to Parali village on Pali-Khopoli road. Six-seaters are available from Parali to Bheliv village, which is the base village. Amongst the three mountains near village, middle one is Mrugagad. It takes around 1 hour to reach to the top of the fort. The way is through dense trees, along the valley between the fort and Third Mountain and then over a rock patch to the top.

VISITING KALSUBAI FORT FROM MUMBAI / PUNE

Kalsubai

The highest peak in the world is Mount Everest. Likewise, Kalsubai is the highest peak in the Sahyadris in Maharashtra. Kalsubai is the Everest of Maharashtra. To climb this Everest, you need no climbing equipment. To climb this 4500 feet peak, it just takes one day for either a Mumbaikar or a Punekar.

Fascinating Spots :
On the top of the peak is a small temple, which can seat at the most 3 people. The vastly spread out backwaters of Bhandardara attracts ones attention from the top. On the north we see the mountain range having forts like Ramsej, Achala, Ahivant, Saptashrungi, Markandya, Dhodap, Rawlya , Jawlya and Koldher. To the east one can spot Aundh, Vishramgad, Alang, Madan, Kulang, Matheran and Harishchandragad. There has, however, been a massive deforestation on this mountain. One can spend around an hour on this peak before starting to descend back to the village.

It is an easy trek. The only difficulty is the inclination, which is quite steep at places.

To the west of the Mulshi dam is the Mawal of Korbarase. The forts Korigad and Ghangad lay this region. Korigad is built near the Savashni Ghat, which connects Lonavla and Pali. This fort is well known due to its fortification that is still intact. To visit the forts in this region, one needs at least 3-4 days leisure. One can also go for a cross-country trek which includes Korigad, Ghangad, Tailbaila Walls, Sudhagad and Sarasgad.

Shivaji Maharaj incorporated this fort in Swarajya along with Lohgad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657. On March 11, 1818, Col. Prother invaded this fort but could not succeed even after prolonged fighting. Finally he succeeded on 14th March, by dropping a cannon ball where the ammunition was stored. Along with this fort the English also conquered Ghangad.

Fascinating Spots :
Koraigad appears like a wall from Peth Shahpur. On the top of the fort is a huge plateau. The ramparts on this fort are around 1 ½ kms in length. One can move along the complete top of the fort by walking on the bailey. While coming up from the Peth-Shahpur route, we come across many caves, some cisterns and an idol of lord Ganesh.

After entering the Ganesh Darwaaja (Peth Shahpur route), we can see the remnants of the old buildings. Here we can see the temple of Goddess Korai Devi. This temple has been renovated recently. There is a “DEEPMALA” right in front of the temple. The idol of Korai Devi is around 4 feet high. There are many bastions on the Southern side of the fort. There are 6 cannons on this fort. Of these, the biggest cannon named “Laxmi” lies next to the Korai Devi temple. There are two more temples on the fort.

There are two large ponds on this fort and ahead of them are two caves. Here we can see the idol of lord Vishnu holding the Conch, Discus, Mace and Lotus flower.

From here Nagphani Point, Tung, Tikona, Matheran, Prabalgad, Karnala and Manikgad ranges can be viewed.

Jivdhan Fort

The terrain in Maharashtra is highly uneven, and is primarily divided as coastal plains and eastern plateau. These are connected by ghats. Sixty such ghats exist in Sahyadri, and they have played a major role as commercial routes. Huge forts guarded each of them. The whole range that has been guarding the ancient commercial route of Naneghat for thousands of years includes the forts of Jeevdhan, Hadsar, and Mahishgad & Chavand. Jivdhan lies at the mouth of Naneghat, and is a quite tougher one. Moreover it is famous for the pinnacle Vandarlingi.

History :
The whole range of these forts originated during the rule of Satvaahan era. This is clear from the entrances carved out in stone. The fort stands at an important position and most important guard of Naneghat. From here any help to Naneghat could reach in less time. It was under Bahmani control and after that it went to Nizamshah. In 1636, Nizamshahi declined. Shahajiraje rescued Murtiza, the last Nizam from Jivdhan and took with him to the fort of Pemgiri. But he was trapped by Mughals and had to hand him over to them. This was the end of Nizamshahi. In 1818, the British captured all the forts here and destroyed them. Jivdhan too became a victim and the main entrance was destroyed. Even today the marks of those wounds cannot go unnoticed as we climb the fort.

VISITING IRSHAAL FORT FROM MUMBAI/ PUNE

Irshaalgad is a fort situated in the Karjat Region. Other forts in this region include Prabalgad and Malanggad. While driving along the Mumbai Pune highway, the forts of Malanggad, Devni Pinnacle, Matheran, Peb, Mhasmal, Prabalgad, Irshal attract one’s attention. The population in this area is quite normal. Because of the very heavy rainfall in this region, the most cultivated crop is rice. As the fort is very near to the highway, the approach road to the base village is available.

Irshaal

History :-
The name Irshaalgad itself is a misnomer; Irshal is not a fort but actually a pinnacle. This is the reason why it hardly figures anywhere in history. Shivaji Maharaj captured the complete region of Kalyan and Bhiwandi, up to Rairi in May 1666. This fort too, must have come under the Maratha rule at that time. Irshal is the next-door neighbour to Prabalgad. A sad incident occurred on this pinnacle on January 23, 1972. Kumar Prakash Durve lost his life after falling down from this pinnacle on that day. To remember this day, all the trekkers from the Mumbai – Thane region assemble here on January 26 every year.

Via Prabalgad :-
There is a traverse directly from Prabalgad to Irshaalgad. From the machi on Prabalgad one can reach Irshaalgad, traversing the fort of Prabalgad in approximately 3 hours.

Via Matheran :-
Reach the One Tree Hill point at Matheran. From here we go down to the base village Varose of Irshal in an hour. This route is quite prominent. A path from this village goes to the col that joins the Irshal and Prabalgad. Trekking further ahead on this plateau one has to reach the village of Irshaalwadi. It takes an hour to reach the top from this village.

Via Chowk :-
Chowk is accessible from the Mumbai – Pune Highway. Chowk can be reached both from Karjat and Panvel. The time taken to reach Chowk from Panvel is approximately 1 hour and from Karjat it takes around 45 minutes. There is a prominent route from Chowk to Irshaalwadi. It takes around 2 hours on this route, with a bit of easy rock climbing put in.

Food can be arranged for a maximum of 5-6 people at Irshaalwadi.

The water in the tanks last only up to March after which there is no water available on the area.

Sahyadri range has plethora of forts. Taluka Junnar, belonging to the Pune district is no exception. Hadsar is a beautiful fort located in this region. Starting from Naneghat, one can combine Jeevdhan, Shivneri, Lenyadri, Hadsar and Harishchandragad into a six-day trek.

History :-
Fort Hadsar, also known as Parvatgad, was constructed during the Satvaahanas and was heavily inhabited during that period. It is located on the outskirts of Ahmednagar (known commonly as Nagar) to control the trade route passing through Naneghat. Documentary evidences show that Hadsar was one of the forts exchanged in the 1637 treaty between Shahaji Raje and the Mughals. In 1818 the British forces conquered Junnar and the forts in this region. Like most other cases, main features of this fort were demolished by the british during their attack and later.

Fascinating Spots :-
The entrance gates of the fort of Hadsar are epitomes of the medieval architecture. Twin doors in a tunnel-like entranceway, steps carved out of the rock and the construction of the entrance are worth studying. Passing through the main entrance, the path is divided into two. One leads to the top of a hillock and the other to the second gate. Immediately after the second gate a water cistern, with potable water, can be seen.Walking towards the elevated area in front of the cistern leads us to three huge stores carved in the rock butting the cliff. These are not suitable for a stay, though. The rock also has images of lord Ganesh carved on it. Towards the right, there is a big pond with a Mahadeo temple and a huge Nandi. The hall of the temple has six corners, three of which have idols of Lord Ganesh, Garuda (Eagle) and Lord Hanuman respectively on them. The pond in front of the temple gets completely filled in the monsoon. A stonewalled well-like construction can be seen at the center of the pond. Adjacent to the temple lays a strong bastion.Descending from the right of the bastion-wall, a cistern now filled up with sand soil can be seen. Proceeding little ahead leads us to a carved-out cave in the rock. This was meant for surveying purposes. A splendid view of the Manikdoh dam and its surroundings enriches this place. The whole range of Chavand, Naneghat, Shivneri, Bhairavgad and Jeevdhan is visible from here.

VISITING DHAK- BAHIRI FORT FROM PUNE/ MUMBAI

Dhak-Bahiri

Thinking of any place perfect for adventures, we come across many place in Sahyadris like the differences of Naneghat, Kokan Kada, Kalakrai etc. where we can also experience the thrill of technical climbing and natural rock climbing. One of them is the fort of Dhak, situated in Karjat region, and is a quite thrilling trek. The fort was discovered by great historian G.N. Dandekar

Fascinating Spots :-
As such no significant structures are remaining on the fort, except good scenery and few water cisterns.

The cave of Bahiri :-
An important part of this thrilling trek is the cave, which is situated on the other side of fort, and the way goes through dense vegetation. Walking for few minutes’ leads to a diversion and the way to right directs to a cliff called the cliff of "Kalakrai”. The narrow ridge between the cliff and the mountain descends to a narrow straight path where we come across two caves. One should proceed from here by taking support of the rocks and should be quite careful. Ascending the rock patch where a bamboo and a rope are used to climb to the caves. The caves as such are sacred as the Lord of Bahiri resides here. From the caves, we can have a glance of the terrifying beauty of peaks of Sahyadri. We can also see the beautiful twins forts of Rajmachi, Shrivardhan and Manranjan. Here one can use the cooking vessels kept in the water in the cave. They should be kept back by cleaning after using them. A legend says that one who tries to steals the vessels, perishes.

Kalakrai Pinnacle :-
This pinnacle is quite famous and frequently visited by mountaineers. The way to the left of the ridge takes to the cliff, but a rope and rock climbing equipment is necessary.

An exciting campfire spot in the forest :-
Moreover, people can also enjoy an existing campfire in the forest below. Choosing a place on the outskirts of the forest with less vegetation, one can stay here for a night and experience an exciting campfire. Here we can enjoy sky observation, as the sky is clear.

Ways To Reach :-

From the village of Wadhap :-
From Karjat one should aboard the S.T. bus for the village of Wadhap. We have to cross a rivulet, and a way leads straight to the fort. There is a temple on the fort. To the left of the temple is the way, which leads us to the ridge between the fort and the pinnacle.

From the village of Sandshi :-
From Karjat, S.T. buses ply regularly to Sandshi. Its better to board the bus in the early morning as the midday sun heats the rocks. From here, a guide is required, as the way proceeds through dense vegetation and is quite confusing. After a walk of 2 hours we reach the ridge between the pinnacle on the left and the mountain of Dhak on the right. Way through the ridge leads to the cave of Bahiri. There are rock-hewn steps, and following them is a rope, bound to a bamboo. Here we have to climb safely. Above the cave is the wall of mountain on which the fort of Dhak is situated.

From Rajmachi :-
While going to Rajmachi from Lonavala, we come across three prominent waterfalls. After we pass all waterfalls and cross the stream, we come to a distinct diversion. The way to the left goes to Rajmachi, and to right is Dhak. It takes 3-4 hours to reach the fort from here, via Wadhap.

DURG- DHAKOBA FORT

Durg-Dhakoba

In the mountain ranges of Naneghat and Jivdhan, lies the forts of Durg and Dhakoba. To the south of Naneghat and Jivdhan is Dhakoba, while Durg stands behind it. Both these forts are situated in quite a deserted area. There are few villages, but here the socio-economic condition is so bad that people strive hard to meet just the basic needs There primary subsistence occupation is farming.

Fascinating Spots :-
There are no prominent structures on the fort. We can just imagine that it was used as a military base.

Ways To Reach :-
Junnar-Aaptale-Aamboli.You can reach Aamboli village by bus in one and a half hour from Junnar. Here you get the first glimpses of Dhakoba. A way from the village takes you to a plateau on the fort. On the way there are 3 caves. You need one and half hour to reach this plateau. On the plateau one can find many footways, but only two are prominently used. Way to the right takes you to Dhakoba and as you descend further downwards, this way takes you to Durg. The descending way travels through the forest. Further as you move ahead, you will come across a stream. After a walk for an hour, you can see the fort Durg from the plateau. From here a way towards left takes you to Durg, while a way towards right takes you to the Durga temple.

Accommodation Facility :-
There is no accommodation facility on both the forts. But 15 people can easily accommodate themselves in the temple at the foothills of Dhakoba. Similarly around 5 people can stay in Durga temple.

Drinking Water Facility :-
Water ponds are situated right besides both the temples near Dhakoba and Durg which can be used for drinking.

Sahyadri is not just a mountain range, but it is a great treasure of history, the history of the struggle by the great Marathas, & ancient Satvaahans, who left for us with their fine arts with which very few modern carvings can be compared. The Satvaahans ruled what is today called the state of Maharashtra, & their great regime is commemorated by the remnants of the forts & caves they constructed in the heart of the Sahyadris. The whole range that has been guarding the ancient commercial route of Naneghat for thousands of years includes the forts of Jeevdhan, Hadsar, and Mahishgad & Chavand. These belong to the Satvaahan era. And Chavand being one of them is a very significant one.Situated at a height of 3000ft from sea level, the fort houses many a remnant of constructions that take us about 800 years back into the time. The fort is in Pune district, at a distance of 20 km from the city of Junnar. The region at the foothills of the fort contains exotic flora & fauna. It was here that we could spot at least 12 varieties of birds. Village of Chavandwadi lies at the base of the fort.

History :-
Malik Ahmed founded the Nizam Dynasty in 1485. He was the first Nizamshah who acquired the fort of Chavand after the dissolution of the Bahmani Empire.The seventh Nizamshah was Second Burhanshah. His grandson Bahadurshah was imprisoned here in 1594. Bahadurshah was the nephew of Chandbibi, a renowned personality from the same period. She played an important role in helping him to achieve the throne.In 1636 Shahajiraje, father of Shivaji Maharaj, signed a treaty with the Moghals, in which the Moghals got Chavand.Shivaji Maharaj named the fort as “Prasannagad”. Mythological references 1) The forts named after the names of great sages (for e.g. Vasota, named after Vasistha) are pre-ancient forts.2) The forts decorated by Buddhist carvings and sculptures (for e.g. Shivneri) are ancient forts.3) Forts belonging to the medieval period are related to Shaiva, Shakta or Naath.4) The goddess Chamunda is an idol of destruction of evil, with a terrifying appearance, armed with weapons. The deity belongs to Bengal, Bihar and Karnataka.

1) Saptamatrika (The seven cisterns) :-
The British in their attack have destroyed many a construction in the eighteenth century. Here a temple half buried in the earth can be seen. As we go ahead on the left, we can see 7 water tanks aligned along each other. These have much mythological significance, & their names are as follows: Brahmi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrayani & Chamunda, the most powerful goddess of all.

2) Human made caves :-
As we proceed towards the northern direction around the fortification, we can see that a proper way was constructed hereby to move around to keep watch. On the north side of the fort, human made caves are situated where the fortification ends. Here it is said that a secret passage exists, amidst the wall, right below the caves. As we go the south side, we can have a beautiful view of the river Kukdi that originates from Kukdeshwar, a famous pilgrimage near the fort. On the southeastern side, no fortification exists as steep fall dominates this place. Again as we proceed westwards, we can see the fortification here. This fort being strongly secured was used for imprisoning Bahadurshah Nizam in 1594.

3) Temple of goddess Chamunda :-
On the topmost part of the fort, i.e. on a small hillock, is situated the temple of Goddess Chamunda. Here rises the question, that who brought this deity here in Maharashtra, which is predominantly from the provinces of Bengal, Bihar & Mysore. The answer is also quite simple. Naneghat had been the main route for transport of goods that came from other provinces via harbour of Sopara & Kalyan, the place of junction. Some well established businessman from Mysore, who came through Naneghat, must have established Chamunda here. Folks were unable to utter Chamunda, & they called it as Chavand, hence was named the fort. The places in the region of Naneghat reflect the rich culture of Satvaahan dynasty, and the well-developed artistic works that existed during this era. The temple of “Kukdeshwar” must be visited when we go to Chavand. The simplicity of this place is worth experiencing. The caves of Shivneri and “Lenyadri”, another famous pilgrimage, are worth visiting.From the top of the fort, we can have a glimpse of the mountain of Shambhu & the fort of Jeevdhan on the west, Hadsar on the north, Shivneri on the east & the route of Naneghat along the fort. The topmost part of Shivneri is clearly visible from here. Along with a rich geographical position, the fort also has a rich history, which can be stated in a few steps.

1) Saptamatrika (The seven cisterns):-
The British in their attack have destroyed many a construction in the eighteenth century. Here a temple half buried in the earth can be seen. As we go ahead on the left, we can see 7 water tanks aligned along each other. These have much mythological significance, & their names are as follows: Brahmi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrayani & Chamunda, the most powerful goddess of all.

Ways To Reach :-
The way to the top of the fort goes along the village school, from the western side of the fort. From here, it takes about 45 minutes to reach the entrance door. From here the footsteps take us to the plains, on which we can see the remnants of many constructions.

Accommodation Facility :-
One can stay on the fort in the caves, but mice may pose a problem. Trekkers also stay in the village school. There is boarding facility in Kukdeshwar temple too.

Food Facility :-
Available in base village.

Drinking Water Facility :-
There are many a cisterns and tanks on the fort, but the two on the southwest side are more reliable.

BANKOT FORT

Fort of Bankot stands in Ratnagiri at the mouth of Bankot creek, where River Savitri (originating from Mahabaleshwar) meets the Arabian Sea. Bankot creek was a major sea trade route, and the ancient caves of Dasgaon and Mandangad are the evidences of the same. Bankot fort, which has witnessed many dynasties, is also known as Himmatgad and Fort Victoria.

History :-
First of the references for this fort is found in Greek traveller Pliny’s works in first century AD, where he refers to this fort as Mandargiri or Mandgor. No reference is available till 1548. In 1548, Portuguese won this fort from Adilshah. Later Kanhoji Angre captured this fort and renamed as Himmatgad. Due to rivalry between Peshwas and Tulaji Angre, Peshwas allied with British and waged a war with Angres. Commander James captured the fort and named it as Fort Victoria. Since it was not economically viable to maintain this fort, it was handed over to the Peshwas

Fascinating Spots :-
There is a Ganesh temple at the base of the fort. The fort is surrounded by moats dug up in the red laterite. The main entrance faces north and is decorated with stone carvings. Near the entrance are vestibules for gate keepers. In the vestibule on right side there are 6 water tanks. Going ahead we come across Nagarkhana, where we find decorative steps to ascend it. From here we can have a glimpse of Savitri River and the surrounding region. To walk on the ramparts, there are stairs from eastern and western side. From the western doorway we can go the bastion outside the ramparts. Here we find a deep well and a room for the patrolling soldiers. There is a secret entrance near this bastion. This bastion lies on the way from Bankot to Velas, and was built by Siddis to strengthen Bankot fort.

Ways To Reach :-
To reach Bankot village, we have to go from Mumbai Goa Highway. Before Mahad, there is Toll phata, and the route is via Ambet-Mandangad-Bankot (about 248 km). It takes around one hour to reach the fort from village by walk.

BHAIRAVGAD FORT

Bhairavgad

Bhairavgad comes under the regions of Koyananagar. The significance of forts here is that they are away from the actual range and hence are invisible from long distance. The main attraction of these forts is the dense forest. This fort has been declared as ‘sanctuary’. All the villages once situated are moved out from the sanctuary. Buses are available to reach at the base village.

History :-
The construction on this fort indicates that this fort was mainly used to keep check on the surrounding area. However no mention of this fort is available in the history.

Fascinating Spots :-
There is a very big temple on the fort. This temple is well built and very beautiful. In the temple 2-3 ft long idols of Goddess Bheri, Goddess Tula and Shree Vaghjai are seen. We find many carvings on this temple. Tulsi Vrindavan and Shivling are seen in front of the temple. 2-3 pillars are also seen. Opposite to it there is another temple of Lord Shiva.From the temple the descending way takes us at the bastions of the fort. Further we see the remnants of the entrance. From here take left and come at backside of the fort. Here there are two water reservoirs. This water is potable. From the fort we can see the dense forests of Koyana. Top of the fort is not very big. So 2 hours are enough to see the fort. If we stand before the temple and descend down the right side way for 5 minutes, we come near a water reservoir. However, here water is available only till the month of March.

Ways To Reach :-
We can go to Bhairavgad by two ways. One directly ascends from Konkan and the other from Ramghal of Helwak.

1)Via Durgvadi: :-
For this way, we have to come at Chiplun. From Chiplun, one should reach Durgvadi, which is situated at the base of the fort. Bus from Chiplun to Durgvadi starts at 8 a.m. It takes approximately 1 hour. From Durgvadi, the way to the fort goes through the forest. It takes about 3 hours. Though this way is straight, it is little hectic. The way from the village Gavhare also connects here. No water Sis available on the way.

2)Via Ramghal of Helwak: :-
To come here, alight at Chiplun or Karad. On Chiplun-Karad road after crossing Kumbharli Ghat, one comes near Helwak Phata. From here we come at Ramghal within 2 hours. Take the way going upward from Ramghal. We can go to the fort from ‘Patharpunj Juna Vaghona’road. It takes about 6 hours to reach the top. There is a risk of getting lost here due to dense forests. It is advisable to go with guide.

3)Via Gavhare: :-
The way towards Gavhare is before the village Durgvadi. One can come at Gavhare by this road. From here 3 hours are enough to reach the top.

Accommodation Facility :-
20 people can be accommodated in the temple.

Food Facility :-
One should arrange for the foodstuffs.

Drinking Water Facility :-
Water is available in the reservoirs in all seasons.

Time To Reach :-
3 hours via Durgvadi,7 hours via Ramghal

BAHADURGAD FORT

Bahadurgad:-

Bahadurgad or the Fort of Pedgoan, is situated at the river bank of Bhima. It is still standing gloriously holding back the history along with it.

Fascinating Spots :-
Bahadurgad is basically a land fort. It is situated in the base village itself. Many ruined structures are scattered in the village. There are two doors for the fort. One which opens in the village itself; which is still in a good condition, while the other is at the end of the fort. We should enter the fort from the village itself. As we enter we can see 5 feet tall statue of Maruti standing proudly as well as a temple of Bhairavnath. Special feature of the fort is, there is a group of 5 Temples which was built in Yadav period and the temple of Bhairavnath is one of them. But the temples are not maintained in good condition. Because of the coloring work done on the Bhairavnath temple, it has lost its structural beauty. In front of the temple many structures are seen like Virgal, Satigal, several Cannon Balls, a Deepmal and a statue of Shiva. Start along with the fencing. As you move forward you can see many devastated structures of , some of them are even hidden in shrubs. The fencing at the backside of the fort is ruined. From here you can see a view of Bhima river bank. A little further and you enter the fort. Here is a 2 storied palace of Aurangzeb. It is said that Aurangzeb and Sambhaji Raje meet at this palace. You need around 3 hours to see the fort completely. Then return from the same way. Before traveling back, you can see the Shiddhtek Temple, Rashin Temple and the Swinging Towers (Halte Manore).

Ways To Reach :-
This fort is situated around 20kose away from Shreegondh village in Ahmednagar. This fort was built by Bahadurkhan in Pedgoan village.

1) Pune-Daund :-
First you have to reach Daund Phata which is 90kms. away from Pune on Pune-Satara Highway. Just before Daund, there is a way to Shreegondh village. On the way you have to cross a bridge on Bhima river to reach Pedgoan village. It will take around four hours to reach Pedgoan village from Pune.

2) Pune-Bhigavan :-
Bhigavan village is situated on Pune-Satara Highway. From Bhigavan move towards Rasshin-Siddahtek road. Pedgoan village is 25km away from Rasshin village.

Accommodation Facility :-
Besides monsoon season, 15-20 people can accommodate themselves in the temple.

Food Facility :-
One should make arrangements for foodstuffs.

Drinking Water Facility :-
Water facility is available in front of the Goddess Temple.

AVCHITGAD FORT

The southern part of Konkan is adorned by natural beauty. The city of Roha is situated on the banks of Kundalika River. Avchitgad is situated in the mountain ranges around Roha. This region is beautiful, and the fort is one of the rich forts of Maharashtra. Dense woods along the mountain have made it bit difficult to ascend the top.

Fascinating Spots :-
The main entrance to the fort is still in better condition. The bastion on the way from Medhe was much better for keeping a watch on the surrounding region. As we proceed further from the main entrance, we come across the remnants of old constructions on a neighboring hillock. Near the second entrance there is a lake. The water is potable here. Near to it is a statue of Lord Khandoba. The fort is not much wide, but stretches long enough. It takes about two hours to see the fort. The forest around the fort is dense and the fauna comprises wild hogs, leopards, foxes, monkeys, etc. it is a best monsoon trek. From the top of Avchitgad we can have a glimpse of Telbaila, Sudhagad, Sarasgad, Dhangad, Raigad, Korigad and Savashna Ghat.

Ways To Reach :-

Via Pengalsai :-
Pengalsai is situated at about 5 km from Roha. It is the base village. From here it takes one hour to reach the top.

Via Medha :-
The village of Medha is 7.5 km before Roha on Mumbai-Roha highway. The way to the fort goes along the temple of Lord Vitthal. We have to ascend through thick woods and reach the front bastion after one hour.

Via Padam :-
There is an old factory in the village of Padam. Beyond this factory is the way to the fort, which takes us to the southern entrance within two hours.

Fascinating Spots :-
Near the Ashram, there is a small hut where we can stay. A small water stream provides us with pure water. The way beyond Ashram leads to a rivulet, crossing which we can reach the cave of ‘LUV-KUSH’. To reach this spot we have to ascend the way of waterfall for one and half hour. Above this cave there is a precipice called 'Cradle of Sitamai'. In the cave there are the carved “Padukas” or the footprints of Luv and Kush. This precipice is a real challenge for trekkers.The ashram is a sacred place and people from all over Maharashtra come here. There are some carved stones near the ashram, on which some carved idols depict some story.From this place, we can visit Ratangad. For a 5-day cross-country trek, the trio of Ratangad - Harishchandragad-Ajoba can be planned.

Ways To Reach :-

Kasara-Ghoti-Rajur-Kumshet :-
To reach the top of the fort one should follow the route of Kasara-Ghoti-Rajur-Kumshet.

From Asangaon :-
One should board the train to Kasara and alight at Asangaon station. From Asangaon, board the S.T bus to Shahapur and from there we can reach the village of ‘Dehne’ by bus or jeep. From Dehne, a sole pathway leads to a small plateau, from which 3 ways branch
a) One way is treaded by bullock carts and goes to the plateau where the ashram is situated.
b) The second goes through ‘Katrabai’s ‘ valley and joins ‘Kumshet’ village
c) Third way goes through the forest.
Kalyan-Murbad-Malshej-Dolkhamb :-
Kalyan-Murbad-Malshej-Dolkhamb is another route

Accommodation Facility :-
Near to the ashram, there is a hut where about 20 people can stay. Care should be taken from snakes and scorpions. Generally people prefer this place as one-day trek, especially in rainy season. A beautiful waterfall is formed in monsoon.

Drinking Water Facility :-
The water stream provides us drinking water.
