Today Sony Executive Vice President Kazuo Hirai announced that an 'iTunes' style online entertainment service will be coming in early 2010.

Sony plans to launch the new online service to distribute movies, music, books and other content to the PS3, network-capable Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players, ebooks and others in a bid to add value to its hardware.

To quote: "Sony Computer Entertainment chairman Kaz Hirai has revealed the firm has pencllled in an early 2010 launch date for its new iTunes-rivalling online service.

"[A launch] earlier in the year would be preferable," Hirai told Business Week in an interview after the announcement."

Today PlayStationUniversity.com (linked above) is reporting that IBM's Vice President David Turek announced that Cell processor development will be phased out.

Apparently the planned 32 SPE Cell processor will not be made, and their current PowerXCell 8i will be the company's last entrance in the technology.

To quote: "The Cell Processor was originally the brain child of 'The Father of PlayStation' Ken Kutaragi. It was later co-developed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba; making its way into the PlayStation 3, TV's and super computers.

So what does this mean for Sony and the PlayStation 4? Will this change with IBM pulling out of their own development?

Not necessarily. Sony can still hire IBM to create a Cell Processor for their next console, without IBM being involved in their own internal development outside of the PS4."

Now with the PS3 Firmware 3.10 update you can send an error report to Sony.

I encountered this personally just yesterday when I was playing Modern Warfare 2 and think its a good feature for future PS3 Firmware updates to reduce issues.

To quote: "Thanks to firmware 3.10, Sony now allows users to send an error report after an improper shutdown.

Freezing is an annoying issue and there is no way for everyone to be able to report such errors in an easy way. While it's unknown what exactly is being sent to Sony, expect information about your software and hardware to be sent.

According to a disclaimer before sending in the report, this includes PSN account information, the content saved on your PS3, and your email address. This information will be sent if it was being used during the time of the problem."
To quote: For the better part of a year, Japanese PlayStation 3 owners have been enjoying an amazing service on their PS3s, called adhocParty. As of this afternoon, all of us PSPers here in North America will finally be able to jump on the adhocParty bandwagon as well.
Today the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Beta hit Europe, while being delayed in the US.

However, the UK Forums are currently loaded with negative reviews of the Beta... far from lackluster is the gist of what I am reading.

There has also been a patch update v1.01 (7.7MB) released which fixes the initial server and VoIP issues, and the servers are now up and running.
Finally, those who are still seeking BFBC2 European Beta keys may wish to give THIS post by Solfegieto a look, but remember there are only 5,000 available so act fast if you plan on doing it.

According to the image from their Slide Presentation [PDF] below, 3D games will be released in line with Sony's 3D strategy and all PlayStation 3 consoles will be upgradeable via PS3 Firmware update to support 3D.

Needless to say, this should come as no surprise as several PS3 3D demos have been available over the last few months, including those from TGS 2009.

Update: VG247.com has confirmed that Kaz Hirai stated the current PSN service will remain free, and subscriptions are only for "premium content and services."

Sony has revealed during their Media/Investor Conference that the PlayStation Network will be getting a new paid subscription service in 2010 alongside non-game content likely to include applications and videos.

According to their Slide Presentation [PDF] a "new revenue stream from subscription" will be generated.

Although few other details exist at this time, the way it is worded sounds like it could possibly be a subscription similar to XBox live on its way to PSN.

To quote: "It is unclear what the new revenue stream subscription might be. Could it be similar to Qore, an optional service, or something

Today Examiner.com (linked above) has uncovered an ESRB Rating for an upcoming PS3 exclusive title, namely Revenge of the Wounded Dragons.

The game is in development from A2M, the folks behind WET, and with publisher Sony Online Entertainment on board the 2D fighting title will likely be heading to PSN.

To quote from the description: "This is a 2D fighting game in which players assume the roles of two brothers attempting to avenge their grandfather's death and rescue their sister from the local mafia boss. Players frequently punch, kick, and throw enemies as they "side-scroll" (i.e., walk) forward through the platform city environments; they can also use bottles, bats, knives, Molotov cocktails, pistols, shotguns, and uzi submachine guns to kill the henchmen.

All enemies disappear from the screen seconds after they are defeated. The gun attacks represent the most intense instances of violence, as enemies r

Hard to believe after Sony's PlayStation 2 console just turned nine years old it would finally hit Brazil, eh?

That is exactly what Sony did today, according to Kotaku (linked above), the PS2 has officially launched in Brazil.

To quote: "It's priced at R$799, which works out to be around USD$465. So, yes, it's expensive to buy video games in Brazil.

Our man Pedro tells us that with a nine year-old console only just launching, there obviously isn't an official PS3 presence, though he says Sony do sell some older PS3 games. For R$199 (USD$115).

Ever wanted to know why piracy was rife in South America, those prices might get you in the right direction."
According to a rumor from E-mpire.com (linked above), Sony is in talks with Mozilla over the possibility of porting FireFox over to the PS3.

While this sounds promising, obviously there will be numerous security issues to address if this browser finds its way onto the PS3.

To quote: "We recently received a tip from a source very close to Sony who says that they have been in talks with Mozilla lately about possibly porting Firefox over to the PS3.

That said, our source made sure to point out that they were unsure if any deal had actually been reached at this point, but it is great news none the less considering the complaints Sony has been getting about the lack of reliability w

Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein has announced today that PlayStation voting for the 2009 Video Game Awards has commenced.

To quote: As the saying goes, "It's an honor just to be nominated." If that's the case, then we here at PlayStation are pretty well honored; The 2009 Video Game Awards nominees have just been announced, and Sony Computer Entertainment is up for 17 awards, more than any other publisher!

UNCHARTED 2 leads all games with a record eight nominations, including GAME OF THE YEAR. See below for the full list of SCE titles and what award they're up for.

But going back to that saying - being honored is nice, but winning is better. Fortunately, the decision isn't left up to a shadowy cabal of Illuminati; for the first time ever, gamers from around the world get to vote for the victors between now and Saturday, December 12th.

PlayStation Home Online Community Specialist Locust_Star has shared news today of a special Thanksgiving Event in PlayStation Home and an Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Fortune Hunter Edition contest.

To quote: This Thanksgiving, you'll want to spend every spare moment in the ever-evolving world of PlayStation Home.

Starting this week, a new mini-game will appear in Central Plaza, occupying the space generally reserved for Saucer Pop. This Thanksgiving-themed game will only be live for a limited time and will prove to be one of the most addictive, action-packed, and ridiculously fun activities going on in PlayStation Home.

The premise is simple: in celebration of the impending Turkey Day, users will approach the giant stone turkey in Central Plaza and, of course, pledge their allegiance to the almighty Meleagris Gallopavo by stating "Gobble gobble" and/or other assorted turkey-isms.

If your homage pleases your turkey overlord, you will be given a chance to chase a

Today LittleBigPlanet PSP Senior Producer Mark Green has announced that LittleBigPlanet is going portable on Sony's PSP and PSPGo consoles, as follows:

LittleBigPlanet is here for PSP! Yes, we've finally finished, and I don't mind admitting that molding Media Molecule's PS3 game to fit its new home on the PSP and PSPgo has been a rollercoaster ride for us all.

The game is in stores beginning Tuesday and I have to say that we're very proud of it. When we were first asked to make a PSP version of LittleBigPlanet, we wondered how on earth that much physics was ever going to fit onto something so much smaller, but to be honest we've enjoyed the challenge and now have a whole new world of LittleBigPlanet to show for it.

A world that contains thirty-eight newly created levels across seven different environments, all ready for you to play and explore - in addition to the whole Play, Create, and Share experience that's synonymous with LBP.
It's been quite some time since we had an update on PS3 MegaBox (or similar frontends) primarily because Sony removed the OtherOS and Linux options from the PS3 Slim.

However, yesterday DemonHades (linked above) experimented with installing the latest PS3 MegaBox Linux Media Center via USB pendrive.

That being said, those who wish to revisit PS3 MegaBox can grab the recently released version 2.1 Final (1.3GB in size) from Spanish site Megalandia along with some compatibility and multilanguage fixes.

For those curious, PS3 MegaBox v2.1 has the following features, roughly translated:

- It turns your PlayStation 3 into a complete system multimedia.
Today John Hight, Director of Product Development at Santa Monica Studio, has announced the launch of God of War Collection for Sony's PS3 console.

To quote: Kratos has finally come to the PS3! Just in time for the holidays, fans can now enjoy the award-winning God of War and God of War II in stunning HD.

To give you a refresher on specifics, God of War Collection includes both critically acclaimed games remastered in full HD resolution complete with 2X anti-aliased graphics running at 60 frames per second - all on a single Blu-ray disc.

And if this ultra smooth gameplay wasn't enough, we've also added PlayStation Network (PSN) PS3 trophy support to the franchise for the first time (included for both games).

Our team did an exceptional job supporting the release of God of War Collection while at the same time tending their work on God of War III. It's inspirational for us to see the critical acclaim and the overall positive

Today Atlus' Manager of Public Relations and Sales Aram Jabbari has announced that 3D Dot Game Heroes is going retro on PS3 this coming May and shared a launch trailer (below).

To quote: Many words and terms are frequently thrown around in relation to classic gaming: retro, old school, and so forth.

Often, games will be referred to as throwbacks, praised for their ability to induce nostalgia and capture the magic of the golden era of gaming. But really, what does "retro," or any of those terms for that matter, really mean in reference to a game?

That the game manages to accurately capture the look of a classic title or genre? The sound? The feel? Does it more effectively evoke memories of childhood for the gamer than other games? Does it shun complexity in favor of simplicity?

We ask the question because it's at the heart of our latest game (we're Atlus, by the way, publishers of SMT: Nocturne, SMT: Persona 4, and the sleeper hit of
The European Blog's James Thorpe has revealed that cross-game voice chat is coming in response to the question "when is there going to be cross-game voice chat?" regarding the firmware update.
Today Sony's Social Media Senior Specialist Chris Morell has shared a video interview with with Capcom's Morgan Gray covering Dark Void on the PS3.

To quote: The same day Jeff hit up Seth Killian to talk Super Street Fighter IV inside Capcom's US HQ, I sat down with Senior Producer Morgan Gray for some quality time with Dark Void.

This was the first time I've seen the game running in action on PS3, and Morgan was kind enough to walk us through a hefty chunk of jet-packing, on-foot shooting and unique "vertical combat" - the three key components that make up Dark Void's unique blend of third-person action.

Dark Void's due out on January 19, but for now, there's plenty of footage to peep below.

To quote from the video's caption: "Proof of Concept Demo, Wode playing Farcry ISO from a SAMBA share on a PC. PC and Wode are connected via a WiFi router."
Those interested can check it out below, and if you haven't seen it already the WODE Moon Trip demo video is further down.

To quote: Hi everyone, here's an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience.

PopCap Games Associate Producer Michael Santora has announced today that Peggle and Peggle Nights are coming to PSN this week for PS3.

To quote: Hey everyone, I'm Michael Santora, an Associate Producer from PopCap Games, bringing you all of our titles in association with Sony Online Entertainment. You may remember me from such blog posts as the announcement of Heavy Weapon on the PlayStation Network.

I am super excited to be able to tell everyone on the network that yes, we have listened, and yes, YOU CAN PLAY PEGGLE ON YOUR PlayStation 3 this Thursday!

Peggle took the PC world by storm back in 2007, and quickly became the casual game that everyone - including a ton of hardcore gamers - played. Following on its heels, Peggle Nights was released and has also received major excitement and fanfare from the gaming masses.
So to get you riled up while you wait, we have a very cool treat - a director's commentary-style video with the team(s) behind this incredibly impressive remastered Blu-ray collection that includes God of War and God of War II in glorious HD, along with two full sets of Trophies and more.
Joining me via PlayStation Eye is developer Bluepoint Games President Andy O'Neil and CTO Marco Thrush, along with Santa Monica Studios Director of Technology Tim Moss.
