Corpse Party for PSP, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One goes digital, and more with the November 22, 2011 edition of the PlayStation Network Releases.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope all you had a lovely time downing lots of turkey, spending time with family and friends, and buying cheap electronics at wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately, yours truly was sadly stricken by the cold bug and had many restless nights of itchy-throat soreness and non-relenting cough spells. In fact — *COUGH, COUGH, COUGH* — I still do.

And because of that, this week’s PlayStation Network notice won’t be as long upfront. Honestly, there isn’t that much to talk about in terms of relative content too… It’s almost as if there’s a holiday going on or something, huh? What I would like to point out before I head for the nearest air humidifier are two things of good note; first is Corpse Party on the PlayStation Portable — a gory 16-bit oddity served on a adventure-based platter — and the recent Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One finally available as a digital download.

Oh wait, my bad! Let me add a third. My brain totally slipped and forgot about Final Fantasy V releasing as a PlayStation One Classic this week too, which also reminds me that we still have one game left in the Winter of RPGs campaign from Square-Enix; the previous being Chrono Cross and the last, Final Fantasy VI, coming up on December 6. So look forward to that, because it so happens to be one of the best Final Fantasy games ever, or so says the word on the street.

PlayStation 3 Turns Five, We Look Back At Five Years Of Commercials

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

The PlayStation 3 blows out the candles for it’s fifth birthday, and to celebrate, we take a fond look of how far the Sony console has come through it’s commercials.

Five years ago, which is now like a lifetime in Internet years, Sony ushered in the era of the PlayStation 3 in North America on November 17th. It was a rocky start at first for the console, but it thankfully weathered those storm cloud days to become an awesome gaming machine with an equally awesome laundry list of games you can’t find anywhere else.

Uncharted, PixelJunk: SideScroller, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, LittleBigPlanet… geeze, I could be here all day naming names of sweet PlayStation 3 games that have come along since the system’s existence (when I would rather spend time playing those games instead, haha). So instead, if you allow me a little leeway my dear readers, I wanted to use the way-back machine to check out the many TV commercials Sony has put out for the PlayStation 3, which unintentionally, sort of serve as a very interesting time-stamp of where the PS3 was at during that point.

Going chronologically, we can’t begin any look-back of PS3 commercials without what many would say is the weirdest out of the bunch. That freaky baby commercial that gave many people (mainly me) nightmares. Now, what I can garner from this point in history is that Sony was quite full of themselves, and not only did they think that people would buy $500 consoles, but that a commercial like this would be cool. Nope to both.

Awkward to the max, indeed. Let’s hurry along to the next video before it stains on all of our minds forever. And glory be, this upcoming one is much subdued in tone and fixes on what matters most about an upstart gaming machine, the games dammit! (Like what’s on this week’s PlayStation Store) Something Sony should of been on top of with their messaging with the PlayStation 3 at the onset, but egad, that ego cool-aid is such a swell drink!

Oh and Internet kudos to anyone who can recognize the song used in this TV montage. Make sure not to saliva all over it, it’s no biggie if you don’t remember.

Personally, I think the beginning of the Kevin Butler ads were a pivotal turn of the tide for the PlayStation 3. Rightfully so, because it’s the moment where Sony introduced the slimmer PS3 along with the $299 price cut, which skyrocketed sales of the console to infinity and beyond — but least we forget — it also brought back the playful attitude of PlayStation brand we all came to love during the days of the PlayStation 2.

The first Kevin Butler ad is especially partial to this idea (it’s one of my favorites too) as it makes fun of all those PS3 slim rumors that got way ahead of Sony announcing the news themselves.

Finally, this next ad is so nice, we’re gonna show it twice. Yes, yes, I’m well aware that you might have already seen the “Micheal” commercial featured here on Ps3Maven and television — but you got to admit, it’s an absolutely fantastic ad that pulls off why being a PlayStation 3 owner can’t be beat. They even got Solid Snake’s gravel-sounding voice down, pat. Impressive.

I’ll let you on a tiny secret… Micheal is me. Haha, nah! Seriously, its not. Maybe.

Well there you have it guys, (almost) five year’s worth of splendid PlayStation 3 commercials — weren’t they something? Happy birthday PlayStation 3! Let’s all hope the next five years is something worth remembering too. From my humble little viewpoint, it certainly seems very bright!

The Metal Gear Solid game that’s gone missing is telling all at this year’s Video Game Awards on Spike, December 10th.

Spike’s annual Video Game Awards brings Hollywood stars and videogame creators together to celebrate the best of the best from that year. It’s also where big news is made too; namely the debut of many greatly anticipated games that will probably be in contention for next year’s nominations (it’s the only reason I’ll be watching — though props to my main man Neil Patrick Harris, way to represent homeboy), in fact, Batman: Arkham City was first shown at the 2010 VGAs and is expected to do battle against the likes of Uncharted3 and Portal 2 for Game of the Year 2011.

Meanwhile, Metal Gear Solid: Rising (yeah remember that game, kiddos?) was never introduced at the VGAs, but rather, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo back in 2009 — and since then — the Koji-Pro backed title, staring MGS’s own cyber-ninja Raiden, has been in a mysterious flux of why the heck is this thing taking so long to come out! The lack of status updates from Konami about the well-being of the game caused quite an echo of rumors to flood the internet, as you would expect, with the oddest insisting that MGS: Rising production had been taken over by Platinum Games (makers of Bayonetta, Vanquish).

Crazy, I know. Thankfully all such scuttlebutt about Metal Gear Solid: Rising should come to a hopeful end as the game makes it’s re-debut (or whatever) at this year’s Video Game Awards, December 10th (check local listings), where it’s been promised that series creator himself, Hideo Kojima, will reveal “the truth about Metal Gear Solid: Rising.” What that exactly means is unknown for now, but one would — heck we all would — think it might be footage from the actual game. Not a teaser, not a CGI trailer that shows Raiden slicing a giant mech in half (don’t get me wrong that’s cool too, bros); just some reassuring gameplay footage that will make my Amazon wishlist spot for the title worth the space it’s taking.

Don’t let me down Kojima-san! Although, truth be told, he and his crew did a fantastic job on the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection which was released recently, so my faith isn’t in the wrong hands.

Three More PlayStation Bundles, Featuring Harry Potter, Everybody Dance, & Medieval Moves

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

It’s an avalanche of PlayStation-related bundles just in time for one of the biggest shopping periods all year, Black Friday. Click to find out the full details!

Seems as if the LittleBigPlanet 2 bundle we told you about a while back was just a small sampling to Sony’s main course of special packaged deals that will hit the retail market a week or so before Black Friday; the day after everyone in North America stuffs their faces full with all the standard Thanksgiving fair. I can taste the turkey, and the inevitable nap-time from eating said turkey, already!

Adding to the list now are two more PlayStation 3 bundles and one more PlayStation Move bundle, with the pictured one above featuring everybody’s favorite wizard Harry Potter and a 160GB PlayStation 3 for $249.99. You won’t be getting in any games (really there’s no Harry Potter game worth playing, truth-juice folks) though, but instead a movie pack that includes a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 on Blu-ray, plus a voucher to download Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets from the PlayStation Store.

Now, that’s the first PS3 bundle. The second one goes for a different, shake it like a Polaroid picture, audience with the centerpiece of Everybody Dance, a fabulous dancing game that uses the PlayStation Move to track body movement as players flaunt their moves like Mick Jagger along to 40 dance hits from pop to hip-hop. This bundle is fifty dollars more at $299.99, but having a 320GB PS3, a PS Move starter pack, and a copy of Everybody Dance surely makes up for it at that price.

Lastly, and before you go completely mad at the amount of stuff we’ve gone over, we have the second PlayStation Move bundle for this holiday shopping season; an impressive box that has two games to start you off in the waggling world of Sony’s motion controller, Sports Champions and Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest. If there’s a common thread between both titles, it’s the fact that both were joint developed by Sony’s San Diego Studios and Zindagi Games — so together with a PlayStation Move starter kit, all for $99.99, it only makes the logical sense that both would be paired side-by-side.

All the special bundled deals mentioned here will be releasing in the coming weeks, so keep a sharp eye out for them if you need some excellent gift ideas for you or a loved one. If consoles or hardware aren’t on your list though, I’m sure there will be some killer deals in the works on software too! I can think of a few games that I would snatch up in a moments notice (hello Uncharted 3!) if at a lower discounted price.

Five Years of the PS3: Where Are We?

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

November marked the fifth anniversary of the PS3. Is the system going strong, is it time for a new one, or is Sony having a midlife Crisis?

With over 77 million subscribers, 5 years of history and hundreds of great games, few people could say that the Playstation was anything but a success. But, getting from there to here was a bumpier road than anyone of us would have expected, or liked.

Back in November 2006, Sony launched the PS3 in Japan. Almost immediately afterwards they announced that the global system launch was being pushed back to March of 2007. Not exactly off to a good start, as consumers demanded satisfaction, people sold their unopened PS3s on eBay for absurd sums and the Xbox 360 was laughing all the way.

Things got a better, and evened out the playing field when Sony got their act together, launched the system, and blew everyone away with its outstanding graphical capabilities. Seeing beautiful games like Heavenly Sword in action for the first time was the most convincing argument I ever heard for ditching my old PS2 and moving on.

A whole generation got their fix on the system that offered the best graphics anyone had ever seen. As the games catalogue grew, everyone rejoiced.

And then, after looking at the ridiculously high sales numbers of the Wii, Sony announced plans to launch their own motion controls and everyone was left shaking their heads. Another motion control? Half of all people alive on Earth already owned a Wii and were getting sick of it, and all of a sudden Sony wants in the market? Hmmm.

Their motto “It Changes Everything” didn’t exactly come true. I guess that’s why they went with “It Does Everything”, which is at least technically true now. I hear it can even give you a back massage if you’re nice to it.

While the move wasn’t exactly the high point, it wasn’t the low point. I’m sure we all remember (well, those of us who choose to remember that is!) the month long blackout in April 2011 where our beloved PSN was hacked by some very, very inconsiderate people and we were left with local multiplayer to satisfy our urges to destroy one another.

But that’s all in the past. Now we’ve got our hands on Uncharted 3, Resistance 3 and any number of other threequels. But what’s next? Are we at the peak of what the PS3 is offering or do we have the potential for another 5 years of greatness?

Sony doesn’t seem entirely sure what’s going on. We’ve got rumors of the PS4 floating all over the Internet, and counter statements that the PS3 is still strong. But where does that leave us, the consumers? Do we need another system now? Will we just go through more of the same ups and downs or does Sony have the formula right this time: no kinks, no hitches; just gaming goodness?

Also, be sure to check out this year’s Black Friday 2011 – PS3 deals and PSN Releases of this Week.

‘Jak And Daxter Trilogy’ Rated By German SKU & Now Confirmed By Sony

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

Ousted by a German videogame ratings board and now officially confirmed by Sony, the Jak and Daxter Trilogy is a done deal.

Before a little game called Uncharted put Naughty Dog studios on the map as a big-name developer, they had their hands in a prior – yet also critically acclaimed – set of PlayStation 2 exclusive titles, the platforming, at times vehicular combating, Jak and Daxter series. Now, similar to its fellow PS2 legacy brother Sly Cooper, the series is being reportedly honored with its own PlayStation 3 collection sometime in the very near future.

Entitled for the time being the Jak and Daxter Trilogy (which was the name the German videogame ratings board — image below –, along with several others, gave the game and not Sony), the collection will hopefully contain the first three entries of the series; Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II, and Jak 3, all each given a nice high-definition tune-up with some extra bonus content goodness just for good measure (like the Heavy Rain: Directors Cut, please!!!)

I now some of you out there in Internet Land won’t be happy to hear that Jak II, the black sheep amongst the three, will be apart of this trilogy (is that pitchforks and torches being picked up, I hear?), but remember friends that this — just like the Sly Cooper Collection that was released last year — is a celebration of a pretty stellar series as a whole. Which, thanks to the way our ever-progressing gaming culture works, seems to be not remembered all too well or at all.

A drat shame really, because the Jak and Daxter universe is both a brilliantly imagined and technically crafted world, a great melding of fantasy and science-fiction tropes, and most importantly, developer Naughty Dog’s much needed learning steps that would go on to help shape the Uncharted series in all it’s awesomeness. Officially the Jak and Daxter Trilogy hasn’t been announced just yet, but word from Sony themselves say that a true PR release (with price and date I hope) will be coming quite soon. So stay tuned, folks.

Ps3Maven helps you find the best deals for Black Friday, starting November 25th.

With the possibility of traveling far distances to meet up with loved ones, visiting pests relatives about to occupy your home, or spending way too much time in the kitchen slaving over a turkey, Thanksgiving week is bound to be a hectic one for many of us celebrating it. (Be thankful it comes once a year!)

So really, the last thing you want to do is fish around the web for Black Friday deals, of which there will be in much supply come this Friday, November 25th. That’s why we’ve gone ahead and rounded up every PlayStation 3 sale from every retailer participating and posted them below. We were thinking of giving you a can of cranberry sauce instead, but I think you’ll agree this is much better.

Off the bat, you might notice that the headlining deal that every outfit is sharing in is a $200 PlayStation 3 bundle featuring Ratchet & Clank All 4 One and LittleBigPlanet 2, but only ToysRus is adding in a free PS3 wireless controller with that order. Ideally that would be the best deal, but honestly, any shop you decide to go to on either Friday or Saturday will fit your PS3 wants, if need be.

Remember, some deals might change on the fly — so as the old saying goes, first come, first serve!

Best Buy

The largest electronics retail chain in North America will open its doors at midnight (12:00 am) on Friday, where three of the biggest games this year, Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception, and Batman: Arkham City have been slashed down to $30 each.

Surprisingly ToysRus will get a jump start on the competition by opening — or rather — starting their Black Friday extravaganza three hours early (9:00 pm Thursday night). What’s also surprising though, is the selection of deals; which I mean there is hardly none of besides the aforementioned PS3 bundle for $200 (this one gives you a free wireless controller, probably a third party one though). I do like the buy one PS3 game, buy another for five dollars offer — yet the catalog of what to choose over is slim pick’ins. Aw, shucks!

Again! Open at midnight. Now, what’s really good here is Walmart’s variety of $10 – $15 games (I spy Yakuza 4 at $10 — holy moly), plus they beat every retailer by selling Batman: Arkham City and Battlefield 3 for two dollars less ($28 each). Which I guess is cool, if your care about saving every shopping dollar you can.

Yup, also open at midnight. Actually, Target’s first year in doing so. Goes to show how all this Black Friday madness has caused quite stir for U.S. retailers that want every shopping dollar they can get. Disappointingly, nothing too special here — but for picking up Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Rayman Origins you do get a ten dollar gift card; that’s kinda nice, maybe.

Lastly we come to Kmart; who opts instead for a 5:00 am kick-off to their Black Friday sales. If your looking for blue-light discounts on Medal Gear Solid HD Collection ($34.99) or ICO/Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection ($29.99), then you know where to go. Kmart that is.

Jurassic Park: The Game, BurgerTime World Tour, and so much awesomely more are primed and ready for this week’s PlayStation Network Releases, November 15, 2011 edition. Check it!

Dinosaurs and hamburgers, is there a more better combination? Oh, I should think not. And wonderfully, it comes this week in the tight tandem of Jurassic Park: The Game and BurgerTime World Tour; two new digital games up right now on the PlayStation Store.

With Jurassic Park: The Game, players return to the island that started it all — you know, the one with dinosaurs that somehow end up getting lose from their cages and then attack their keepers (they should really close that place down, I tell ya) — in a four part episodic adventure series from the pros at the sub-genre, Telltale Games. The San Rafael, California studio worked closely with Universal Studios to create an awesome re-imagining of the island and the prehistoric beasts that live there.

T-Rex, triceratops, and those wily loveable velociraptors are all excitingly here in Jurassic Park: The Game, right beside the marvelous sounds of John Williams’ familiar soundtrack and a story filled with suspenseful twists and heart-pumping action. Surely fans of both Telltale Games or the Jurassic Park films will be right at home — cozy and warm — with this episodic title, if not, then how about clinching your hands on a meaty modern take on a classic arcade game. Hmm?

That would be BurgerTime World Tour, which started as a classic 1982 Data East game where users help Chef Peter Pepper allude hotdogs, fried eggs, and pickles to build… well, hamburgers of course! Hey, it was a simpler time back then. And notably — without that charming simplicity, no one would probably remember BurgerTime so fondly or as passionately as the fine fellows (or gals) down at Monkey Paw Games, who have transformed the quaint pixel sprites of ole’ into brightly colored 3D world (not as bright as PixelJunk: SideScroller though).

Like many applauded retro-revivals, BurgerTime World Tour keeps it’s memorable core gameplay in honored tact while adding a few interesting drops of flavor, say rocket-packs and what not, to mix it up. Truly this game, and a cheap on at $9.99, is a work of much fevered love from Monkey Paw and should definitely be checked out if you’ve got the time to do so on the PlayStation Store.

New ‘Soulcalibur V’ Trailer Shows Off Expanded Character Creation Mode

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

Back again for Soulcalibur V is the character creation mode, and it’s better than ever.

Character creation has always been a touted game-feature of the weapon-clashing Soul series, from Namco Bandai, since the release of Soulcalibur III, where much like a Mr. Potato Head or what not, players could choose from a toolbox set of different fighting classes, clothing and armor, and physical features to assemble their vision of the ultimate warrior. Or… to just make knock-offs of familiar gaming faces like Ryu from Street Fighter II or Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, which fair enough, looked cool also.

Launching in January, Soulcalibur V’s own character creation mode truly goes beyond it’s predecessors by giving unlimited amounts of freedom to personalize your character as you so choose. From just the standard facial features and clothing carousel options (which are awesome in their own right), you can go even deeper than before by molding together different trinkets to specific armor pieces — like adding devil horns to a set of samurai armor. There really is so many countless options to choose from this go around — it’s mighty impressive. Oh, and of course, if you just want to make Ken or Bayonetta, then have at.

Check out the five minute video starring Hisaharu Tago, Soulcalibur V’s producer, while he shows us the game’s fully-fledged character creator. Not only is it informative, but it’s really funny too!

Square-Enix wants to get you into the role-playing game mood by featuring three classic such titles, starting this November, with the “Winter of RPGs” campaign. Exactly which three you’ll just have to click here to find out!

PSP UMD Passport Program Coming To Japan

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

Sony announces a UMD exchange program in Japan that offers digital versions for a fee.

It’s a solution to give PlayStation Portable owners, at least in Japan for the time being, an option to play their catalog of UMD-based games on the PlayStation Vita. Not the most wishful of solutions honestly, but it’s one none the less (yes I’m trying to put a positive spin on this — deal with it.)

The “solution” I’m oh-so alluding to friends is the newly announced UMD Passport program – an interesting initiative which gives the aforementioned opportunity by redeeming those physical software copies for digital versions through a free downloadable application available December 6th. Well actually… to clarify, you don’t automatically get every UMD game registered through the app, but rather a discount on repurchases of those same games through the PlayStation Store.

Head scratching, I know. Let me put it as simple as possible, say you have PSP Game A in UMD form that you really really want to play on your shiny new Vita handheld (oh hey, a Vita bundle). Simply just download the app on your PSP, register the game in question via Wi-Fi, and in exchange you’ll get a discount to spend on the digital counterpart that after being mark downed will fetch about $6 to $13 each, although some might catch a higher fee *cough* Square Enix’ RGPs *cough*.

Remember, the UMD Passport Program is Japan-only for now (hopefully a North American & European role out of it is in the works) and as for the list of games that will be compatible under it just look below — along with publishers who plan on supporting the program too. Mind you that this is just an initial games list and Sony hopes to make the system compatible with roughly 200 titles later on.
