It’s been quite a while since I’ve played a PlayStation Move title, and I literally had to dust off mine to play this game. But boy oh boy was it worth it, sorcery has got to be the best Move title out on the market!

It’s hard to believe that we first caught a glimpse of Sorcery way back at E3 2010. Developers The Workshop have been tinkering and tweaking away at the game since then and have now given us the chance to become a true sorcerer. From the first minute and tutorial right at the beginning you can see that during this long two year development cycle that The Workshop paid particular attention to the motion controls.

Interesting monsters but some repetative enemies

You control a teenage boy named Finn who is a sorcerer’s apprentice with incredible potential yet to be discovered. The story begins when Finn’s mentor and teacher, Dash, leaves on a trip and Finn alone. The mischievous boy that he is, he soon steals a wand and is then hurled into a strange adventure with his feline friend, Erline, at his side. Sorcery is mainly directed to the slightly younger audience but I think the game play is what adults will really enjoy.

It’s a good thing that the gameplay of the game is so excellent as it will help hide some of the flaws of the game. Now none of these flaws are really that bad, but are some things that I think deserved mentioning and one or two just bugged me personally. The first thing is the graphics and environments, sure at first some scenes look great, colourful and pop out, however there are others that seem a little bland and unimaginative. Many of the enemies fall into this category unfortunately, besides the constant repetition of enemies and some environments you don’t really notice as you are having a lot of fun waving your arms around casting spells.

Aside from the bland graphics the real question is how does it play? After all this is a PlayStation Move title which requires a Move controller and either a navigation controller or a dual shock controller. This may scare away the anti motion gamers but it really shouldn’t. Mentioned for the umpteenth time this is the best move game on the market. Ok back to the controls.

Conjuring spells like a true sorcerer

I thought it would be a problem that I only have one Move controller but it’s not the case. Using the navigator or DS3 controller solely for moving your character around with the left analogue, re-centre the camera with L1 and shield with L2. Very simple and comfortable even with my DS3. The move controller is where its all happening though, a quick flick forward and you will shoot a bolt in that direction. It’s so accurate that you can flick forward and to the top right and that’s exactly where the bolt will go, which comes in handy when you start facing enemies on different levels and locations in a level. Flick it right or left and the bolt will go there, but the clever thing is the targeting system which automatically will send the bolts toward the enemy if you flick it in the general direction, but don’t worry it doesn’t baby you along you can still miss the targets. Want more challenging and interesting ways to use the Move, OK. You can curve the bolts but flicking and twisting your arm either right or left. You can then curve the bolts around cover to hit your targets. Very cool. Sometimes I found curving and hitting targets to the far left was a little challenging and the game would send the bolts just off target, taking a few attempts to hit it, but nothing game breaking.

Now what would a sorcerer be with out having some awesome spells? The game does a great job of continuously making you feel progressively stronger. During your play through of the game Finn learns elemental spells making him stronger as a sorcerer and being able to combine your simple bolt attack with the elemental is where the combat system really shines. They can be used both independently and in tandem, for example conjure up a tornado and then fire a fire bolt into the middle causing a swirling fire storm. Awesome right? And it’s a very satisfying feeling knowing that you ‘sort-of’ created it that. Its this freedom of allowing you to create different spells that makes the combat dynamic though as with most game you will end up finding a spell that works best and then stick to it and rarely changing to anything else.

Some exciting environments

I must also point out that the Move was surprisingly so responsive and quick. You can fire slow bolts or really quick successive ones. Other uses for the move controller are cleverly used, taking potions, mending objects, opening chests and moving things out of your way. You start to feel like a sorcerer with power.

Throughout your adventure, you’ll encounter treasure chests filled with gold and special items. These items can either be sold for gold or they can be used to concoct potions that, upgrade many of Finn’s abilities. If you want more health, more mana or more powerful spells, you can bet that there is a potion to help you out as long as you have the right ingredients of course. These potions soon become very helpful and useful that you won’t mind the repetitive motion required to brew them.

Conclusion
If you have a Move then you simply have to get this game as it makes full use of the Move and so well. If you don’t this might be the game that will finally force you to get it. Not the best visuals as the enemies become repetitive and some of the environments a little bland, but this is a motion controller game and so you are more concerned as to how it plays, which is brilliant. Very responsive and great use of the Move controller, in a sentence (mentioned so many times already) this is the best PlayStation Move title on the market!

8/10

A big thanks to Ster-Kinekor Entertainment for the sponsoring of the game.

The famous Max Payne returns but with a new developer, Rockstar, who have taken on the challenge of bringing the series back to life for the fans and new players. I’m glad to say that Rockstar have done an impressive job keeping the what made Max Payne famous and still bringing their own flare to the title.

Almost a decade has past since the previous game was out and not much has changed during that time. Max is still angry as ever since the death of his wife and daughter and he has taken to the bottle and pills to ease the pain. Max has also aged quite a bit yet still has managed to remain fairly youthful and has taken up a body guard job in Brazil.

Working for a wealthy businessman Rodrigo Branco in the heart of San Paulo, unsurprisingly, things don’t work out for Max. Rodrigo’s trophy wife, Fabiana, is kidnapped on Max’s watch, which sets off the domino of chain events that draws Max into a much larger, more sinister story.

Realistic Brazil

The story is told via a very interesting and artistic manner, things such as blurred colours, scan lines, jagged film and random words that pop up during the various conversions and cut-scenes. This is all to help transmit the feeling of how Max sees the world as in a drunken haze. At first it is a little distracting but you soon become accustomed to the feeling and it adds to the overall experience.

Max Payne wouldn’t be Max Payne if it didn’t have the famous bullet time. Which I’m glad to say hasn’t changed and is still awesome as ever. The new edition of the bullet kill cam is a great reward when you manage to survive past the very tough gun battles. What happens is that once you kill the last guy of the area you are treated to a reverse angle of the final bullet that kills him, you can slow the camera down and then continue to fire watching as the bullet rips through the body in a surprisingly gruesome yet satisfyingly awesome visuals.

The one thing that we all know about Rockstar games is that they are really deeply story intensive and a great deal of realism. The same can be said for this title. So much in this game from the smallest detail shows off the realism and work that gets put into this game. The way the enemies die, the voice acting, the surroundings and the environment. Shoot a guy in the arm and he reacts accordingly, when they die it’s even done well.

Bullet time killing is alway fun

The AI in the game is really impressive as well, as they will do their best to flank you, charge you and spread out, keep moving making it really difficult for you to kill them. Some times they seem super human with almost god like aim and the ability to soak up bullets. Thank goodness for the bullet time feature which fills up with every bullet shot, allowing you to slow down the action to get that pin point head shot. The other move you have aside from your bullet time is the diving bullet time, when you will dive to the ground in slow motion. However you will need to think about when you want to use it as when you land you stay on the ground lying down. You can turn around but getting up takes a little time, remember Max has aged a little and it’s realistic, this leaves you open to gun fire. The gun battles in the game are excellent and there are a bunch of memorable ones.

The other modes in the game seem to be more fun than the the main story mode, especially the multiplayer. You can play the story mode in arcade where to try and build up the highest score for each level and post it to the leader boards and then in multiplayer the new gang wars mode is awesome. You are part of a gang and during the match there are four rounds with different objectives that alter depending on the out of the others. Claiming territory to defusing bombs and assassinating random targets. Points are accumulated and takes you to the fifth and final round of death match. Bursts are the perks of multiplayer and they usually help your team mates more as this is a very team driven mode. Multiplayer is a great surprise and must be checked out if you can.

Lying down to take out the enemies

The presentation of Max Payne 3 is top notch, and there’s a certain set of realism that draws you in to the game and Max’s hangover even more. From the interesting cut-scenes presentation to the excellent graphics of the surroundings and environment as well as the animations of the enemies is simply brilliant. Voice acting is superb as you would expect from a deep story driven game and from Rockstar. Music is also something that deserves a mention as it truly works in the various situations you find yourself in, simply awesome.

Conclusion
Rockstar have always been known for bringing something new to their games as well as having great story telling. Max Payne is no different with intense and action pack gun battles, gorgeous environment, realistic animations and surroundings we have another winner from Rockstar. Fans and new comers to the series will love the game hands down. Get this game!

The Alex Mercer virus is back and causing all sorts of chaos in New York City. The first prototype game introduced us to some serious powers of destruction making you feel like the ultimate bad ass. And that is exactly what you were a bad, arse. There were a few flaws of the previous game that only the die hard fans turned the other way, does Prototype 2 fix these and bring us something New to the table.

Before I even started this game I actually dusted off the first game and spent a weekend to finish it before I began the second game. Not that you need to its that I recently finished Mass Effect 2 and 3 one after the other and really enjoyed that, so I have decided to complete games to 100% and in series. Anyway enough blabbing on with the review.

This time round the story continues some just 14 months after the first game left off and you take control of a very angry special super cop, Sgt. James Heller. After a tragic accident which kills his wife and daughter you focus on work and is why you were assigned to go to NYC for blackwatch. You soon encounter Alex Mercer and try to kill, however Mercer has his own plans and lets you in on the plan by giving you his powers to join him in creating a super race. Well the story soon becomes very b-grade type predictable story with a lot of anger, swearing and yet honestly fun. After uncovering the predictable twists of the story your goal becomes to take down your maker.

Getting around NYC is easy

Thankfully you were given powers just like your maker only obviously there are some new ones and powers that have been upgraded from the first game. The developers have listened to the community and fixed a lot of the bugs and irritations from the first game, making Prototype 2 feel a hell of a lot better. Almost everything feels as though it has been improved from travelling, combat and the various powers. The city and game gives off a very similar feel to that of inFamous in the way that you interact with the city and surroundings.

Interestingly is that this time you will not battle that many infected monsters but the majority of your missions will take part over three islands where you will have to deal with the military forces of blackwatch by infiltrating bases. Every now and then you will run into some infected monsters though they seem to be a lot simpler to handle this time and not a pain when you do encounter one. Your main enemies and tougher ones are the new super soldiers and the evolved which are part of Mercers army.

The game still offers free roam where you can choose which missions you wish to partake in. The side missions are simpler and easier, more fun to do no more timed events. These missions also take a little deeper into the main story, the nice thing is that after each mission you complete you are rewarded towards one of your powers making you want to do them all.

Fighting the new Blackwatch super soldier

Around the city and on each island are various collectables scattered around. These are in the form of blackboxes audio recording from fallen sky divers, field operatives that you need to destroy and lairs that also require elimination. Completing the set number of them on each island also rewards you and boosts one of your abilities, again making you want to find them all. The good news is that they are simple to find on the map provided.

There seems like a whole lot more to upgrade this time round, from your various powers, abilities and Heller himself. As is the norm with game now a days every thing you do earns you experience points, but here it’s handled a little differently. These XP points simply allow you to level up Heller and at each time you level or evolve up you can select one upgrade, from increased health to your speed. Making getting around the city and encountering the various foes more manageable.

The new power wheel is a great addition as it allows you bind any two of your powers to the square or triangle buttons at any time, and making it easy to swap between the them. You will have the claws again, the whip, hammer-fists and the new string attack. You will need all the powers at your disposal if you want to progress through the game and defeat Alex Mercer. All have their standard three button mash combo and a power charge mode, making the combat system fairly involved for what seems like a simple system.

One of the infected in the city

Your devastator returns although you will only get two which are a lot simpler to use, I’m sure many will be pleased to hear. Also to acquire them is always possible due to the consist “mass” bar below your health bar which fills up with every thing you do, killing an enemy or consuming them. These are also look very cool as they cause so much destruction who wouldn’t love doing them in the middle of the street. Prototype 2 still shows a very gruesome side especially when consuming the main targets of the mission and you never get tired of watching them.

You are still able to take control of tanks and helicopters but there have be a few little tweaks on other choices of what you want to do Witt the vehicle. When jumping onto a vehicle you can now choose between, hijacking it to take control, finish which allows you to destroy it in one simple move, weaponise which you can rip off the tomahawk or rocket launcher to use to destroy it and others around.

The presentation of Prototype 2 has been upgraded and the city looks crisp and clean, animations are smooth and the destruction and blood are fun to watch. The various environments and surroundings of NYC look very real and add to the whole atmosphere of the game. The voice acting is passable, nothing spectacular and nothing bad, your character is a very angry chap though.

Conclusion
Prototype 2 is a really enjoyable game when you want to pass some time or switch your brain off after a hard days work. The game has also addressed all the problems from the first and improved others. If you are looking for a simple enjoyable game, don’t care too much about the story and want some very easy trophies, then Prototype 2 is just for you.

8/10

Here is the first new trailer for Naughty Dog’s genre-defining new game, The Last of Us. I can’t talk too much about the trailer as it is very hard to describe, you will have to watch it your selves. But here is a little bit of an insight that i recommend you read before watching it.

Joel and Ellie won’t have an easy road ahead on their journey across the U.S. Their path will intersect with those of other remaining survivors, some of whom won’t be so friendly. In this scene Joel and Ellie continue the journey west in a salvaged pickup truck. The sombre tune of Hank Williams Sr. echoes the desolation of the world of The Last of Us. As they drive towards the next destination on their route – really just another place to find resources that will help them survive – they run into some hunters. What happens next is something you have to witness to understand.

Developed by Q-Games, PixelJunk 4am hits the PlayStation Store this week and sees gamers dusting off the PlayStation Move to visualize the accompanying music tracks, which includes tunes by Baiyon as well as the player’s own personal selection. The beta for me was a let down as I couldn’t do anything with it. I hope that this got fixed or that it was just me, most likely the latter. Anyway check out the launch trailer below.
