The Conscious Universe: The Scientific Truth of Psychic Phenomena

Dan Brown’s hotly anticipated novel The Lost Symbol hit bookstores in September, introducing readers to Dr. Katherine Solomon – love interest to Robert Langdon, and a researcher at the Institute of Noetic Sciences.

Though the character is fictional, both the institution and the science behind it are very real. Dean Radin, a senior scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), provides astonishing answers to the questions raised in The Lost Symbol in his recently released book The Conscious Universe: The Scientific Truth of Psychic Phenomena.

Described as “a mix of curiosity, scholarship, technical expertise, and sly wit” by The New York Times, Radin’s The Conscious Universe unveils persuasive empirical evidence for the existence of psychic phenomena. Shattering the myth that surrounds parapsychology, and revealing the extent to which corporations, governments, and academia have embraced it, Radin exposes what the effects will be when – inevitably – mainstream science and society embrace it as well.

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 1 of The Conscious Universe:

In science, the acceptance of new ideas follows a predictable, four-stage sequence. In Stage 1, skeptics confidently proclaim that the idea is impossible because it violates the Laws of Science. This stage can last from years to centuries, depending on how much the idea challenges conventional wisdom. In Stage 2, skeptics reluctantly concede that the idea is possible, but it is not very interesting and the claimed effects are extremely weak. Stage 3 begins when the mainstream realizes that the idea is not only important, but its effects are much stronger and more pervasive than previously imagined. Stage 4 is achieved when the same critics who used to disavow any interest in the idea begin to proclaim that they thought of it first. Eventually, no one remembers that the idea was once considered a dangerous heresy.

The idea discussed in this book is in the midst of the most important and the most difficult of the four transitions – from Stage 1 into Stage 2. While the idea itself is ancient, it has taken more than a century to conclusively demonstrate it in accordance with rigorous, scientific standards. This demonstration has accelerated Stage 2 acceptance, and Stage 3 can already be glimpsed on the horizon.

The idea is that those compelling, perplexing and sometimes profound human experiences known as “psychic phenomena” are real.

This will come as no surprise to most of the world’s population, because the majority already believes in psychic phenomena. But over the past few years, something new has propelled us beyond old debates over personal beliefs. The reality of psychic phenomena is now no longer based solely upon faith, or wishful thinking, or absorbing anecdotes. It is not even based upon the results of a few scientific experiments. Instead, we know that these phenomena exist because of new ways of evaluating massive amounts of scientific evidence collected over a century by scores of researchers.

Psychic, or “psi” phenomena fall into two general categories. The first is perception of objects or events beyond the range of the ordinary senses. The second is mentally causing action at a distance. In both categories, it seems that intention, the mind’s will, can do things that – according to prevailing scientific theories – it isn’t supposed to be able to do. We wish to know what is happening to loved ones, and somehow, sometimes, that information is available even over large distances. We wish to speed the recovery of a loved one’s illness, and somehow they get better quicker, even at a distance. Mind willing, many interesting things appear to be possible.

Understanding such experiences requires an expanded view of human consciousness. Is the mind merely a mechanistic, information-processing bundle of neurons? Is it a “computer made of meat” as some cognitive scientists and neuroscientists believe? Or is it something more? The evidence suggests that while many aspects of mental functioning are undoubtedly related to brain structure and electrochemical activity, there is also something else happening, something very interesting.

This is for real?

When discussing the reality of psi phenomena, especially from the scientific perspective, one question always hovers in the background: You mean this is for real? In the midst of all the nonsense and excessive silliness proclaimed in the name of psychic phenomena, the misinformed use of the term parapsychology by self-proclaimed “paranormal investigators,” the perennial laughing stock of magicians and conjurers … this is for real?

The short answer is, Yes.

A more elaborate answer is, psi has been shown to exist in thousands of experiments. There are disagreements over to how to interpret the evidence, but the fact is that virtually all scientists who have studied the evidence, including the hard-nosed skeptics, now agree that there is something interesting going on that merits serious scientific attention.

Dr. Amit Goswami

Dr. Amit Goswami is professor emeritus in the physics department of the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon where he has served since 1968. He is a pioneer of the new paradigm of science called “science within consciousness” and founder of The Center for Quantum Activism. He has authored several popular books based on research into quantum physics and consciousness and appeared in the films “What the Bleep Do We Know”, “Dalai Lama Renaissance” and the recently released “The Quantum Activist”.

In his article titled “There is a revolution going on in science: View from a Quantum Physicist” he writes the following:

There is today a fundamental shift-taking place in science. This shift is propelling us from the traditionally divisive (spirituality-denying matter-based) science to one which integrates both science and spirituality; and is founded on the solid theory and fundamental truth of Quantum Physics. The fact that science itself must merge with metaphysics is an essential tenet of the new paradigm which has grown from a marginalized movement to a central debate within science. The arrival of this paradigm is now a foregone conclusion.

Decades ago scientific theory favored holism, a paradigm which best accommodated the spirituality of pantheism (Capra, 1975, 1982). In holism the whole is greater than the parts. Life, mind, consciousness, spirituality, are all are explained as a holistic emergent phenomena of matter. Hardly anyone at the time questioned the fundamental dogma of materialism, the idea that everything is made of matter.

Holism, however, was not the only integrative track. Depth psychologists, starting with Freud and Jung, were openly positing the concept of an unconscious that presupposes an irreducible consciousness. Yet, even Jung (1971) occasionally pondered aloud if his idea of the collective unconscious does not have a genetic basis after all. Then came Abraham Maslow (1971), Ken Wilber (2006), and other transpersonal psychologists who were echoing mostly ancient wisdom, and not blending enough modern science to be wholly credible to the more traditional scientists. The holistic paradigmers dominated the avant garde, new age thinking: Gregory Bateson, Fritjof Capra, Eric Wantsch, Francisco Varela, Humberto Maturana, John Lilly, the Nobel laureate Ilya Prigogine, Karl Pribram, David Bohm, the systems theorist Ervin Laszlo, and Roger Sperry, the Nobel biologist who made major contributions to the big hoopla surrounding the left brain-right brain asymmetry as the answer to everything. The list goes on and is very distinguished.

Many holists such as Capra depended on systems theory for their analysis, however, the scope of this kind of analysis is limited; only generalities can be discussed. Others, including Karl Pribram, David Bohm, and Edgar Mitchell tried the idea of hologram, both literally and metaphorically. But the hologram is an object, whereas consciousness is an object as well as a subject. How does the subject-object awareness come about? This “difficult question” cannot be addressed from a materialist point of view (Chalmers, 1995).

Spirituality is more than pantheism, and an integrative bridge was still lacking between holistic thinking and psychological thinking within consciousness. Such a foundation only came about when quantum physics was properly interpreted in a way free of paradox (Goswami, 1989, 1991, 1993; also see below).

Meanwhile Quantum physicists were not exactly quiet. During these early stages of the paradigm shift there was the work of David Bohm, who used the idea of quantum non-locality to define an implicit order, as well as John von Neumann (1955) who was the first to interject consciousness into physics by positing that consciousness chooses the actual event of experience from all the quantum possibilities. In the seventies Fred Alan Wolf (1970, 1984) popularized von Neumann’s idea with the slogan – We create our own reality. Even today, the book The Secret and the movie by the same name are recycling Wolf’s popularization of von Neumann’s idea.

The seriousness of von Neumann’s idea can be appreciated only when we engage with the so-called quantum measurement paradox, a most disagreeable thorn in the side of the materialist attempt to understand and interpret quantum physics. In the materialist model which is based on reductionism, elementary particles make atoms, atoms make molecules, molecules make cells, cells make brain, and brain makes consciousness. This is called the upward causation model of causality. However, according to quantum physics all objects are quantum possibilities; thus how can a possible consciousness coupled to a possible object ever give us an actual event? Possibility coupled to possibility gives you only more possibility. So the reductive thinking of materialist science about consciousness cannot explain the observer effect called the quantum measurement paradox. Hence, we get von Neumann’s idea that material interactions cannot change possibility into actuality, and therefore, our consciousness must be nonmaterial.

But materialists object to von Neumann’s approach to quantum measurement because it smacks of dualism. How does consciousness, an independent non-material dual object, interact with a material object? Such an interaction must require the mediation of signals which carry energy. But the energy of the physical universe itself is always constant precluding any such mediation.

The breakthrough idea is that consciousness is neither a material brain-product nor a dual object; instead, it is the ground of all being in which material objects exist as possibilities. In the event of quantum measurement, consciousness (in the form of the observer) chooses from all the offered possibilities the actuality that it experiences becoming in the process both subject and object (Goswami, 1989, 1991, 1993). In other words, conscious choice is responsible for manifesting both the proverbial falling tree in the forest, and the you that hears the sound of the fall. No observer, no sound, not even a tree. Consciousness is primary to everything.

Crucial to this breakthrough was the resolution of the classic paradox of Wigner’s friend which presents the case of two observers who are simultaneously choosing among conflicting choices; who gets to choose?  The paradox was resolved by three physicists working independently – Ludwig Bass (1971), Amit Goswami (1989), and Casey Blood (1993).  They all proposed non-locality, that is, signal-less interconnectedness of consciousness – as the solution. We don’t choose with total freedom from our individual local ego consciousness, but from a nonlocal, cosmic non-ordinary consciousness, termed downward causation by the psychologist Donald Campbell.

The idea of non-local consciousness is a breakthrough on several levels. First, it becomes clear that conscious choice is objective because consciousness, being nonlocal, is objective.  This validates why quantum physics is able to predict probabilities. Second, for a single event, the scope of creativity remains. The secret behind the secret is that we must choose creatively in synchrony with quantum consciousness to manifest our intentions. In our ego, our so-called free will is seriously compromised having become a choice between conditioned alternatives: what flavor of ice cream, chocolate or vanilla? Third, the nonlocality of consciousness is an experimentally verifiable idea.

Prior to this breakthrough was the work of Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (1935) as well as John Bell’s famous theorem (Bell, 1965) which suggested that nonlocality is involved in quantum measurement, thus offering a means to verify the existence of non-locality itself. In 1982, following Bell’s lead, Alain Aspect and his collaborators did verify quantum non-locality in the laboratory (1982). In the same year, the physician Larry Dossey began making noise about the efficacy of quantum non-locality in healing, an idea that was backed by Randolph Byrd in 1988 (Byrd, 1988) demonstrating nonlocal consciousness and downward causation in prayer healing at a distance.

In 1986 Willis Harman coined the phrase “science within consciousness”, and three years later I published my papers on quantum creativity (Goswami, 1988) and the idealist interpretation of quantum physics in which God, in the form of quantum consciousness, was rediscovered (Goswami, 1989). Besides non-locality quantum creativity reveals yet another important aspect of downward causation – it reveals the idea of discontinuity. Creative ideas come to us via discontinuous events of insight. This is anathema to the old way of thinking in which all phenomena and their interactions are material and continuous. But in the primacy-of-consciousness paradigm, the discontinuity of creativity is explained as quantum leaps similar to the jumps an electron makes from one atomic orbit to another without going through the intervening space.

Last but not least, the physician Deepak Chopra (1989) independently discovered quantum consciousness and the presence of discontinuity in downward causation with his revolutionary idea of quantum healing owing to quantum leaps in consciousness. Quantum healing explains much anomalous data of spontaneous healing (O’Regan, 1997). Science within consciousness had gained real momentum.

I am giving you a flavor, not a history of how the new paradigm, confirming the existence of God, downward causation, and non-locality has come to the forefront of scientific thinking and experimentation once again.

And now the quintessential question. If the data and theory for a consciousness based paradigm of science has been adequately established in the past decades as is demonstrated by my review, then why aren’t the bulk of the scientists (the establishment) accepting the verdict? Why isn’t the quantum message getting through to the mainstream scientists?

To answer this I leave superficial reasons of funding, politics, and career opportunism aside to speak of the challenge and immense responsibility which consciousness based science implies for the personal as well as professional lives of scientists. What does it mean to take responsibility? It means that you become committed to transform yourself according to the need of the evolution of consciousness using the transformative aspects of quantum physics such as discontinuity and non-locality. When you do that you become a quantum activist. An ordinary activist tries to change the world without making any changes himself or herself; the spiritual activist tries to transform believing that the world will take care of itself. The quantum activist undertakes the journey of transformation always with the transformation of the whole in mind.

I assert that materialism is a wound on the body of the evolution of consciousness. And though slow acceptance of the new paradigm is in a sense good; showing that scientists are not naive, for they see what is at issue here, isn’t it prudent to heal the wound as fast as possible?

We must heal the wound before it shows signs of malignancy, and thanks to the influence of Eastern spirituality in the West, and a Western revival of esotericism, many more lay people are ready to take responsibility than scientists. In fact, I fully expect that it is the popular acceptance which will drive scientific acceptance.

So bringing quantum activism to science means that if we cannot convince the materialists to give up their old paradigm, let’s ourselves be supportive of the development of its alternative. We do not compete with one another, we cooperate. We don’t divide, we integrate. Eventually, the science which embraces this integration will become the new paradigm.

What are the “perennial questions” – the fundamental questions that have shaped the human story?

• Since the dawn of human civilization, the human mind has been concerned with three questions: How did we get here? Why are we here? And now that we are here, how do we make the best of it?
• Whatever organization or entity that provides the “best” answers to these fundamental questions of life, shape the truths and character of that civilization.
• As answers to these questions change over time, so does civilization.
• Although the public is largely unaware of it, science has provided new, more sustainable insights that contradict the current answers to these questions.
• The current state of global crisis indicates we are operating under faulty assumptions based on obsolete answers to the perennial questions.

You say that civilization is in decline, and that that’s good news. How and why is it good news?

• Einstein said a problem cannot be solved at the same level it was created. The current confluence of crises indicates that a fundamental change is at hand.
• The decline of what is not working is akin to the caterpillar deconstructing itself as the butterfly is formed.
• Seen in that light, we can begin to recognize the new butterfly civilization being born, even as the caterpillar one crumbles.

What are the pillars of Western thought that are crumbling – what you call the Four Myth-Perceptions of the Apocalypse – and why are they crumbling?

• Our culture and lives are based on the truths we perceive about our world.
• The four fundamental beliefs about our world that until recently have been the foundation of the scientific paradigm, have now been profoundly revised by the latest scientific discoveries.
• These crumbling pillars include:
  1. Newtonian Physics
  2. Genetic control of life
  3. Survival of the fittest
  4. Notion of random evolution
• Because these radical new conclusions haven’t reached the general public, society’s institutions continue to navigate by these “burned out stars,” and thus are taking the world in a misguided direction.

With all the knowledge and information we have now, how could it be that much of what we know is wrong?

• While we have access to more content than ever before, content must be seen in the proper context in order for information to be used wisely.
• Unfortunately, the current context for holding information is based on scientifically disproved beliefs.
• We have accepted disempowering programming as “truth,” and with new and more accurate knowledge comes empowerment.

If the Four Myth-Perceptions have proven untrue, what keeps them in place nonetheless?

• Just as surely as it took more than a century for the world to accept Copernicus’s proof that the earth revolves around the sun, world-shattering beliefs meet with resistance because most people don’t want their worldview shattered.
• Institutions founded on these now-disproved principles have a vested interest – i.e., their own survival – in keeping the old beliefs in place.
• Those organizations (religion, health care, banking, etc.) are not run by awareness but by profit. So the short answer what keeps it in place? Money, or more accurately, the unquestioned belief that money has the right to rule.

Why do so many of our institutions, from health care to banking, all seem to be failing at once?

• These institutions were founded to support, enhance and complement the structure of civilization based on prevailing beliefs of that time.
• Where once these beliefs adequately addressed the perennial questions, their answers are no longer accurate.
• As science is telling us, life operates as an entangled whole, not merely as separate parts. Consequently, the failure of our institutions to integrate new understandings is system-wide, and so all systems seem to be failing at once.
• As we are seeing particularly in the above-mentioned institutions, patching up the old system cannot work. Because there has been a change in the core beliefs of society, fundamental systemic change is required.

You conclude that we are on the verge of a planetary metamorphosis. How would you describe this metamorphosis?

• Quite simply, it is the story of the caterpillar and the butterfly.
• The old forms falling apart all around us, that is a healthy and necessary part of the transformative process.
• Meanwhile, there is a butterfly being born, an amazing “flying machine” that will allow humanity to truly soar above anything it was able to accomplish as a crawling caterpillar.
• Interestingly, the caterpillar and butterfly have the exact same DNA. They are the same organism! The only thing different is the signal each is receiving. The new beliefs we are adopting based on more accurate information is providing the new “signals” that will usher in our spontaneous evolution.

You say our cells may be smarter than we are. How and why?

• Human civilization – a “mere” 7 billion of us — is currently struggling to survive. Meanwhile, the 50 trillion cellular citizens under our skin live in harmony and bliss.
• In a sense, our cells created us! Cellular technology is far more sophisticated than anything humans have been able to come up with.
• The emerging science of biomimicry extrapolates what nature has used to adapt and survive, and applies that mastery to our human world.

What can our cells teach us about solving our current economic crisis? Politics and government? Universal health care? Our current military budget, and the balance between growth and protection?

• In regards to the economy, our cellular community enjoys full employment, universal health care and truly “no cell left behind.”
• It is completely understood that communal health is wealth, so all cells receive proper nutrition and neurological protection from invasive diseases.
• Payment comes in the form of ATP, the body’s energy currency. All cells get what they need to thrive, and those cells doing the most important jobs are “paid” more. Some even are given a “staff” of supporting cells.
• Excess “wealth” is stored in community “banks” (i.e., fat cells) and gets allocated based on the needs of the whole system.
• There is no “borrowing.” The body gets to use only the energy available.
• There is no “inflation.” The value of ATP had remained stable for seven billion years!
• In regards to government, the cellular system embodies the official motto of the United States, e pluribus unum, out of many one. Each cell is “free” to thrive, provided it contributes to the well being of the whole system.
• Divisive and dualistic politics is unknown in the body. Different polarities – like proteins and lipids – cooperate to create an integrated whole.
• Unlike the human mass media, our bodies rely on accurate information, unspun and undistorted, so that our protection systems can distinguish between real and imaginary threats. “Dialogue” between individual cells and the body’s central voice goes on all the time, and the “government” listens and endeavors to do what is best for the whole system.
• In a cell – or for that matter a human body – growth and protection mechanisms are mutually exclusive. Growth is represented by moving toward a stimulus with “open arms” in order to assimilate and grow. In contrast, protection is moving away from a stimulus and closing down. While protection is sometimes necessary to defend one’s life, protection behaviors use the system’s energy but do not provide the system with energy for survival.
• Consequently, an organism that spends an inordinate amount of time in the protection posture is by definition undermining its health. There is a biological truth behind being “scared to death.” While protection is necessary, an “overmilitarized” body is expressing a pathology called “auto-immune dysfunction.”

What was the Human Genome Project, and why were the results so anticlimactic?

• Based on the notion that genes control their own expression, genetic scientists estimated that 150,000 genes would be necessary to control a complex organism like a human being.
• The implications for medical science – and the pharmaceutical industry – was that individual genes could be patented and used for medical purposes through genetic engineering.
• However the Human Genome Project revealed that humans only have about 22,000 genes, the same number as some of the smallest animals on the planet. The “missing” 125,000 genes indicate a fundamental misperception about how humans work.
• In contrast to the flawed notion of “the primacy of genes,” the new science of epigenetics explains how the mind is the master of the genetic code. This obviously changes the model of how life works!

What does the new science of epigenetics tell us about our own powers?

• Although conventional belief holds that our fate is genetically determined, in truth our genes are controlled by our perceptions of the environment. When we change our perceptions of the environment, we become masters of our genetic fate.
• Collectively these perceptions represent the programming of our minds.

What do we know about the conscious and subconscious mind, and how does it impact our behavior?

• There are two parts to the mind: the conscious, creative mind connected to Source, and the subconscious which is a record-playback device programmed by developmental experiences.
• While we believe and perceive we are running our lives with our conscious mind, neuroscience now reveals that more than 90% of our behaviors are controlled by our programmed subconscious mind.
• Most of the thoughts and actions we assume are “our own,” are really the “invisible” and largely unquestioned thoughts and beliefs of others.

Why does it seem so difficult to change habitual behaviors?

• Up to now, we have been unclear on the relationship between the conscious and the subconscious and what actually triggers our behavior.
• Much of “talk therapy” focuses on the surface awareness of the conscious mind, but doesn’t address subconscious beliefs. New awareness and techniques can access and change the underlying programs.

In your chapter on Rediscovering America, you call America a Petri dish. What do you mean by that?

• Historically, nations represent a physical container with borders, figuratively and literally a “culture dish.”
• The U.S. has been seeded by people / cells from a wide variety of different cultures, and allowed to thrive in a relatively unrestricted environment.
• In the sense that it has integrated such a wide variety of cultures, the U.S. is a culture dish representing a miniature global society.
• U.S. success is a biological representation of hybrid vigor where the progeny of purebreds are more powerful than their parents. This likewise suggests that global society will prove to be more vital than any individual culture.

We know about the Founding Fathers, but who were America’s true Founding Mothers?

• The true founding fathers were actually the Native Americans who were here before the Europeans. For example, the U.S. Constitution and balance of powers is largely based on the principles and practices of the Iroquois Nation.
• But a significant check and balance not adopted by America’s founders was something called the council of grandmothers. In the Iroquois Confederation, it was a council of elder women who determined whether the tribe went to war. They could even “impeach” the chief.
• This would indicate that in Native culture, those who represented life itself had the final say about combat, and suggest that re-establishing the authority of our Founding Mothers would help restore balance and sustainability.

You ask the question, “Is scientific materialism a religion?” Is it?

• Scientific materialism – as distinct from science – has become a “religion” in the sense that it even uses the word “dogma” (a belief based on faith, not evidence) to describe its most sacred tenets.
• While science itself is a rigorous process of examining evidence and basing conclusions on that evidence, the belief system we call “scientism” refuses to accommodate the conclusions of new science that contradict its dogma.
• Consequently, science the rigorous practice and science the belief system are at odds with one another.

How did science get so focused on the material, and why is materialism on shaky ground?

• Science originated to challenge the faith-based dogma of the church, by describing and measuring phenomena in the physical world, and then making conclusions based on those observations.
• In a “détente” between two ideological superpowers, science was given domain over the physical and visible world, religion got custody of the metaphysical and invisible.
• When Newton was able to predict the movement of clockwork universe without God or spirit, it was assumed that eventually science would be able to explain the entirety of existence merely by observing the physical world in finer and finer detail.
• However, a funny thing happened on the way to absolute faith in matter. Quantum physics ultimately revealed that the material world itself is a matrix of entangled energy that science calls “the field,” that is oddly similar to the “invisible moving force” that religion refers to as spirit.
• By ignoring nonmaterial reality, science has omitted at least half of reality – and the portion that Einstein believed was the most important.

If the survival of the fittest has been disproved, what is true instead?

• Darwinian theory is focused on the fitness of the individual. However, as human civilization reaches the limits of its growth, our fitness as a species is being called into question.
• Recent understandings indicate that evolution is based on evolution of community … cooperation and harmony, not competition.
• Based on the “myth-perception” of survival of the fittest, we have learned to spend our human and planetary resources on fighting one another. Now we must recognize cooperation is key because the crisis we face today is not the survival of the individual fit or unfit human, but the entire community of life.

What have baboons and bonobos taught us about the nature of human nature?

• We have been led to believe violence is a large part of our genetic makeup as exemplified in the aggressive male dominator behavior observed in populations of baboons and chimpanzees.
• However, a more advanced chimpanzee society, the bonobos, maintain a peaceful and harmonious culture and literally make love and not war.
• Research reveals that even an aggressive primate culture — in this case, baboons — can spontaneously become peaceful with a change of environment.

Why did science assume evolution was a random process, and what happened that shows us otherwise?

• In Darwin’s day, most people were familiar with animal breeding, wherein the traits of the parents are generally reproduced except for the occasional mutation, assumed to be an accident of nature.
• Later genetic science mistakenly concluded that the genetic code could not be influenced by the environment, and therefore all genetic changes are the result of molecular accidents.
• However in the late 1980s, surprising research began to reveal that organisms could in fact modify genetic expression based on environmental stresses.
• In contrast to the widely-accepted yet mistaken assumption that life is random, and hence meaningless, we are coming to recognize that every life form – including humanity – plays an integral part in balancing the biosphere.

What is the difference between random and chaotic, and why is it important?

• Random means completely devoid of pattern, and hence unpredictable. Chaotic systems look random from the outside, but have an underlying order and pattern – even though we may not be able to recognize the pattern.
• A belief in a random world means we are subject only to outright chance. Consequently, we go blindly into an unknown future.
• Science has come to recognize that things we attribute to chance – like the weather – can, with more and more sophisticated measurements, be predicted.
• While we have perceived the world as a series of random accidents, the world is unfolding through underlying patterns we have yet to recognize.
• Future events can not only be predicted, but also influenced and responded to before they occur! This offers us more survivability and mastery over life.

You have a section in the book entitled Weapons of Mass Distraction … what exactly are we being distracted from?

• Primarily, we are being distracted from our own power, individually and collectively.
• We are being distracted from the two components of every evolution: awareness, and community.
• In the face of their imminent demise, the vested interests in society provide the distractions that keep us apart and keep us from finding out how powerful we are.

You write about going sane. How do we go sane?

• First we must recognize that sanity is not merely a subjective term based on what is considered “normal” by a society. The root of the word sanity is “sanus,” the same as the root of sanitary, and it means “health.” If we want to point ourselves in the direction of sanity, we must change our behaviors to those that promote health.
• Next we must recognize that a definition of insanity is “doing the same things over and over, and expecting different results.” Part of going sane is to own the insanity of continuing to do what isn’t working.
• Going sane means to recognize what science is telling us about being co-creators, not passive victims. Instead of remaining passive “children of God” who merely worship the teachings, sanity involves becoming “adults of God” who actually live them.

What is fractal mathematics, and why is it important in predicting our evolutionary future?

• Geometry is the science of putting structure into space. The Euclidean geometry we are familiar with works for building man-made structures but cannot be used to replicate nature.
• Nature designs itself using the principles of a newly identified math called fractal geometry.
• Inherent in fractal math is the scientific principle popularly described as “as above, so below.” In other words, the structure of nature is based on repetitive and self-similar patterns, and by recognizing these patterns we can predict future stages of development.

What does the previous pattern of vertebrate evolution tell us about the next phase in our human evolution?

• Just as vertebrates evolved from fish to amphibians to reptiles, and then mammals, human society has demonstrated a similar pattern.
• Human culture is apparently in a phase similar to the time when dinosaurs, birds and mammals all coexisted.
• Just as mammals became the dominant species on earth, we are evolving now from a reactive reptilian-based culture to a proactive and nurturing mammalian-based culture.
• This pattern indicates that the next phase of human evolution involves recognizing that we are cells in a larger organism called humanity.

Einstein said the field is the only reality. What did he mean by this, and why is it important?

• Humans have conventionally divided the universe into tangible physical matter on one hand, and nonmaterial invisible energy as two separate components of existence.
• When quantum physics was able to look inside the visible atom, it found that what we call matter is actually points of focused energy.
• Consequently, the energy that comprises matter and the energy that fills the space between matter are one and the same and are referred to as the field. So … the only reality is field, and matter is an illusion.

You suggest that the intangibles such as love, harmony and coherence are not only measurable but show measurable benefits. In what ways?

• Thanks to more sophisticated instruments for measuring “energies” (after all, that is what an MRI is … what we are seeing is not the organ itself, but the energy field around the organ), we can see the impact of thoughts and emotions on our physiology.
• Experiments have shown that prayer, meditation and relaxation cause measurable changes in individual physiology and collective behavior – even at long distances!
• Even something as intangible as “love” has been shown to have measurable healing benefits.

From nature’s standpoint, what is wealth? What are the implications for a new and healthy economy?

• The word “wealth” has the same root as “well-being.” Therefore, the purpose of wealth is to create and preserve health.
• Wealth represents the ability – i.e., energy – to do work.
• In today’s world, wealth has been misinterpreted to mean money. Consequently we have the absurd discussion of whether we can “afford” universal health care.
• The body understands that a system where all cells are given what they need to be healthy is far more efficient and ultimately uses less energy.
• A focus on wealth alone doesn’t provide health. Therefore, we must decide individually and collectively what is truly valuable.

What is Newtonian-Darwinian politics, and why might it be up for revision?

• For millennia, most of our collective activity – which we call “politics” – has been based on “might makes right.” This behavior is reinforced by the Darwinian notion of survival of the fittest, and the Newtonian idea of equal and opposite reactions.
• However, the planet-changing impact of human civilization – particularly the destructiveness of warfare – necessitates a change in understanding from survival of the fittest to “thrival of the fittingest.”
• Nature shows us that survival is based on cooperation, and that is likewise true of human survival.
• As we come to recognize that our true nature is community, harmony and wholeness, we also see that our political system must reflect this evolved understanding: Protection must be for all cellular citizens, not just the “rich” ones; information must be as clear and accurate as possible, not used to benefit one over the other; decision-making needs to activate the wisdom of all citizens; invisibles and intangibles like love and caring must be recognized as important parts of a healthy and coherent political “field.”

What do these new discoveries mean for politics?

• As we are coming to understand, “survival” at this level is not the survival of the fittest individual. Our entire species is being tested for fitness.
• Consequently, we must now focus on what benefits the commonwealth – not just the uncommonly wealthy.
• Never before has the motto e pluribus unum been so important to our survival. The purpose of a political system is now to paradoxically expand both freedom and community at the same time.
• New understandings will have us shifting from adversarial to cooperative, based on the “One Suggestion” that we are all in it together.
• Necessity now demands that we focus on solutions rather than positions, and that we practice integrating opposite polarities like left and right, progressive and conservative, masculine and feminine.

You also say that life is progressive and conservative. How is that so?

• Based on nature, life naturally progresses forward with new growth … however, in order to survive there must be a protection mechanism as well.
• We can represent growth as “progressive,” and protection as “conservative.” Both are equally important, each is necessary for both survival and thrival.
• From this perspective, “progressive” and “conservative” will shift from being two opposite polarities, seeking to dominate, and become instead fully empowered dance partners, working in concert.
• Imagine what it would be like were we to collectively ask and answer the questions: “How do we wish to progress?” and “What do we choose to conserve?”

Now that we know what’s so, so what? How do we change the old story and write a new one?

• The first step is to become aware of the story and at the same time recognize the story we’ve been brought up with has been programmed into the behaviors of the subconscious mind. 95% of what we do and say is done and said without our conscious awareness!
• The beliefs that determine our reality are virtually invisible to us – like water for fish and air for birds. Making these invisible beliefs visible is the next important step.
• As we come to understand why the old story is defective, we can make a “leap of awareness” (as opposed to “a leap of faith”) into the new story.
• With more and more individuals and communities divesting from the old story, that old story will have diminishing influence on reality.
• Meanwhile, as we learn, live and reinforce humanity’s new story as a thriving organism, we will be providing ourselves with more and more evidence that we are indeed here on the planet to “re-grow the Garden.”

Atomic nucleus

After some 20 years of tireless dedication to his in depth research on unification, Nassim Haramein’s most recent scientific paper, The Schwarzschild Proton, received an award at the University of Liege, Belgium during the 9th International Conference CASYS’09 (Computing Anticipatory Systems).

Chosen by a panel of 11 peer reviewers, Haramein’s paper won the prestigious Best Paper Award in the field of “Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Field Theory, and Gravitation.” This significant paper marks a new paradigm in the world of quantum theory, as it describes the nuclei of an atom as a mini black hole, where protons are attracted to each other by gravitation rather than some mysterious undefined strong force. This radical new view of the quantum world produces a unification of the forces and appropriately predicts measured values for the nucleon of atoms.

In his Crossing the Event Horizon presentations Haramein claims that the problem in current physics relates to the belief that gravity is a weak force, which goes back to the structure of the atom, where all of the problems started. In studying the atom, physicists were confused when they found a very dense positive nuclei in the center of the atom, which defied their theory of mass and then they found the negative electrons surrounding the atom that had a constant spin without losing energy and showed no signs of entropy. This created the first problem and instead of resolving it through Newtonian physics, they created quantum physics with new forces and particles.

Under Newtonian physics if you put positive particles together, they repel each other. However, in the nuclei of the atom, it has the dense structure of a black hole in the vacuum, but physicists did not consider gravity as the natural force to hold this dense mass together. So instead of re-investigating gravity as a stronger force, which would have resolved the structural issue, they created new forces called the strong and weak forces and added gluons to hold it all together. The simplicity of the structure of nature therefore, eluded them causing major fundamental errors which have been compounded over the years.

In order to resolve the original mistake in calculating the structure of the atom, a relationship between gravity and the electromagnetic force had to be established. Haramein realized that interaction of gravity as a force and the electromagnetic grid as a force, flowing and contracting in relationship, refer to an implosion side and an explosion side. This illustrates the dynamic synergy of the structure of the universe, which is always in motion. In physics this motion is acknowledged as it applies to gravity which is the contracting force, and the electromagnetic has been acknowledged as the radiation force. Applying this relationship to the structure of a black hole in any size shows that the extra forces that were created are not necessary.

The next step was to look at the structure of the nuclei of atoms. Haramein demonstrates that the nuclei of atoms can be described as mini black holes, replacing the need for an ad hoc strong force with no source of energy to define its strength, with the gravitational force of a mini black hole extracting energy from the vacuum.

In The Schwarzschild Proton paper, Haramein examines some of the fundamental issues related to black hole physics and the amount of potential energy available from the vacuum. He finds that only a very small percentage of the vacuum fluctuations available within a proton volume need to be cohered and converted to mass-energy in order for the proton to meet the Schwarzschild condition for a black hole. This Schwarzschild condition proton has a mass approximately 38 orders of magnitude higher than the standard proton mass.

Examining then the role of the strong nuclear force relative to the gravitational forces between two Schwarzschild protons, he comes to the conclusion that the gravitational component is adequate for confinement. In the standard model the strong force is typically given as 38 to 39 orders of magnitude stronger than the gravitational force. However, the origin of the energy necessary to produce such a force is not given. Remarkably, a Schwarzschild proton with 38 orders of magnitude higher mass than the standard proton, produces a gravitational effect strong enough to confine both the protons and the quarks.

This approach gives the source of the binding energy as spacetime curvature resulting from a slight interaction of the proton with the vacuum fluctuations. As such it offers a unification from cosmological objects to atomic nuclei. Therefore, it is possible to write a scaling law to find that the Schwarzschild proton falls appropriately within the mass distribution of organized matter in the universe.

Haramein finaly calculates the magnetic moment of such a Schwarzschild proton system and he finds it to be a close approximation to the measured value for the so-called anomalous magnetic moment of the proton.

With The Schwarzschild Proton paper, Haramein has presented evidence that the proton may be considered as a black hole and that such a system predicts remarkably well, even under crude approximations utilizing semi-classical mechanics, its interaction time, its radiation emissions, its magnetic moment, and even the origin of the strong force as a gravitational component. The Schwarzschild proton strongly suggests that matter at many scales may be organized by black holes and black hole-like phenomena and thereby lead to a scale unification of the fundamental forces and matter.

In October 2008 the What Do Crop Circles Mean? website has been set up specifically to promote new and legitimate scientific research into the meaning and intent of modern crop pictures. It is authored by “Charles Reed”, a well known crop picture analyst from the seasons 2004 to 2008, and also a professional scientist: trained in applied physics, but specializing in coding.

The modern crop-circle phenomenon has been strongly ongoing from 1990. Fifty or more complex and apparently authentic pictures appear every summer in southern England near Wiltshire, or sometimes in other places. Since 2002, there has been reasonable and undeniable evidence that most large or complex crop pictures might be non-human made, at least in the sense of local human fakers with rope and boards (see for example Crop Circles The Best Evidence – Part 2).

During the summer of 2008, there was even more rigorous evidence for their authenticity, concerning a “pi to ten digits” crop picture that appeared on June 1 near Barbary Castle, and which was later publicized worldwide in mainstream newspapers (see Easy as pi: Astrophysicist solves riddle of Britain’s most complex crop circle). Despite its amazing mathematical form, there was no trace whatsoever of possible human involvement in its construction, as evidenced by detailed inspection of the field where it appeared, before large crowds of interested people had arrived.

A persistent debunking of crop circles by the international media has successfully influenced group opinion, so that most people have no idea about the true phenomenon as it may been seen visibly in Wiltshire each summer. Now that is one good reason, at least, why most otherwise intelligent people on Earth today do not believe in the paranormal reality of modern crop pictures! The international media have persistently refused to inform the public truthfully about this important phenomenon, although good reports are sometimes written in local newspapers from Wiltshire, or other regions of England or Italy where new crop pictures sometimes appear.

Few if any of our world’s scientists are paying attention to it either, perhaps due in part to a continual debunking of the phenomenon by large media organizations such as Wikipedia, National Geographic or the Discovery Channel. Some unknown contributors to Wikipedia write for example:

“The main criticism concerning a non-human creation of crop circles is that evidence for their origins, besides eyewitness testimonies, is scant. Crop circles are usually easily explicable as the result of human pranksters.” (see Crop circle)

Of course, that is not true at all. No honest, intelligent or informed researcher of the subject has ever reached such aberrant conclusions. Nor could they, since one very large crop picture was photographed during its formation two years ago in East Field at 3 AM, in the presence of multiple witnesses (see The crop circle mystery).

It has seemed clear for many years now that modern crop pictures are made by small robotic probes, and not by any visiting extra-terrestrials who are located here in person. If NASA were to send small robotic probes to some other planet under a distant star, and then try to bring about a preliminary form of open contact with the natives there, without having any access to their formal systems of communication, or leaders in government, what would they do?

Would they perhaps instruct those probes to carve out easily visible messages in the fields or deserts, so that everyone on that world could see such messages, and come to terms with the idea of open contact while not being afraid? Then when millions of people on that distant world saw such messages, and began to consider their implications, what would their governments do? Confirm the authenticity of such pictures, and advise everyone to pay close attention? Or simply debunk them out of an irrational fear of what the future might bring? Apparently our local governments on Earth have chosen the latter.

General aspects of the phenomenon

Beginning in the late 1980’s, or especially during the summer of 1990, modern crop pictures began to appear mainly in five European countries: England, Germany, Italy, Switzerland or the Netherlands, although sometimes in other places. By the year 2008, a spectacular crop picture had even been reported in South Korea. Still, most of the large, complex crop pictures tend to appear in southern England near the ancient megalithic sites of Avebury Ring or Silbury Hill, between April and September of any year when field crops (oilseed rape, barley or wheat) are most suitable for patterning.

Thus in every past year from 1990, with only a few exceptions, fifty or more authentic crop pictures have appeared during the summer months all across Europe, or sometimes elsewhere. It would require a literal army of local human fakers with rope and boards in many different countries, to produce such a prodigious output of crop pictures! Furthermore, the vast majority of those pictures never show any kind of errors in patterning.

If you have watched some entertainment program on TV about crop circles, or read some frivolous story in the international newspapers, to the effect that teams of fakers with rope and boards are going out late at night into the fields of England, and making complex pictures when no one is looking, then please take the time to realize that you have been lied to! In very important matters such as these, involving possible or even likely extra-terrestrial contacts with Earth, we simply cannot expect our governments or international media to be telling the truth. That would require a governmental policy decision at the highest level, which apparently has not yet been made.

Those mysterious crop pictures appear mainly during the four to six-hour darkness of a northern-hemisphere summer night, in England or other European countries. Sometimes however they appear in late afternoon or early morning during broad daylight: as was the case for a famous late-afternoon “fractal” picture which appeared quickly and silently near Stonehenge in July of 1996 (see Crop circles history 1996). Nor does good weather seems to be a requirement: they appear equally well under a clear sky or during pouring rain.

Furthermore, the typical appearance of any crop picture tends to be incredibly silent and stealthy. Usually no one sees or hears anything, even if some large picture appears directly next to a crowded housing complex or public road. Many of those Wiltshire fields are literally filled all night during summer with young people from Europe, all equipped with modern cameras, and keen to get a good picture of a new crop circle forming. Yet fifty or more silent pictograms still appear each year in the fields, while only a few have been caught while forming on film.

In one case, a well-known daylight video from Oliver’s Castle on August 10, 1996 seems convincing at first glance, but remains controversial (see Crop Circles Secrets: Olivers Castle crop circles video hoax). Yet in another more recent case, a series of night-time videos that were taken at East Field on July 7, 2007, in the presence of several reliable witnesses, seem conclusive beyond any reasonable doubt (see Enormous crop circle formed in max. 1h and 45 min).

Physical evidence

What kinds of physical evidence might we have collected so far, to suggest some kind of paranormal, non-human origin for crop pictures?

Only a few scientific laboratories have devoted any real effort to studying this phenomenon as of 2008 (see BLT Scientific Analysis or Swirled News.) Yet there are a large number of competent and experienced field investigators (see for example Lucy Pringle’s Website or www.kornkreise-forschung.de or Silent Circle or Bert Janssen or Circular Site or Crop Circles Secrets or Crop Circle Research).

The collective results from all those laboratory or field investigations seem rather interesting, even if little known to a mainstream academic audience, say the readers of Nature, Science or Cell.

The general consensus seems to be that a few simple crop pictures could perhaps be made by small teams of local human fakers without detection, using rope and boards in isolated fields, so long as those patterns remain fairly simple and require only a few hours to produce. But most recently-formed crop pictures (especially from the years 2001 to 2008) have become so large and complex with respect to the images they encode, that any “human faker hypothesis” has become completely untenable for the subject as a whole. Not one competent or honest researcher seems to believe in it anymore, to our current knowledge. Nor has any known team of skilled human fakers been able to construct a large, complex crop picture, even in daylight over two full days, without making occasional errors of flattening under the best of circumstances.

These comments are not intended in any way to disparage such excellent efforts to create “authentic but man made” crop pictures. Every kind of hypothesis should be tested logically and objectively, to see whether it can stand up to critical scrutiny? The current consensus however, among practically all honest and knowledgeable researchers of the subject, is that local humans with rope and boards cannot do such a thing: especially fifty or more times late at night in England every summer, and also in other European countries.

The next question to ask is this: if most complex crop pictures are not made by local humans, then what physical evidence have serious researchers collected so far, that could indicate a highly unusual, paranormal means of construction?

First, as you can see on this slide (photo credits to Janet Ossebaard), most authentic crop pictures show “bent nodes” or “expulsion cavities” in their patterned plants, not consistent with a mechanical means of flattening (see Plant Abnormalities or What is the scientific opinion about crop circles? or Arguments Against the Hoax Theory of Crop Circles).

In other words, those plants have been subjected to highly localized, microwave-type heating that makes the water inside their stems either expand or explode, through neighbouring plant tissues nearby. By analogy, those plants have been patterned into some particular shape just as for heating a stiff iron bar until it melts locally, then bending it while hot and pliable into a sharp curve, and letting it cool again.

The silent and stealthy nature of this process is in some way its own worst enemy. For example, if a large disc-shaped flying saucer were to appear every time a new crop picture appears, then most people would be immediately convinced. Instead, even the most careful observers usually see no more than strangely moving lights above a newly forming crop picture, or sometimes small metallic probes, or at other times small coherent balls of light (see Crop Circles Quest for Truth: Balls of Light or Lights Forming Crop Circles or ufo over crop circle southfield alton barns england 14.8.08).

Yet those witnesses are not imagining anything, because military helicopters can sometimes see them too (see UFO – U.S. Military helicopter intercepting ball of light at crop circle)! In addition to occasional photographic records of those objects, we also have many reliable eyewitness testimonies. There have been many independent reports of that kind, too many to list here. Perhaps that is not much to go on after 18 years of studying crop pictures, but then large, mainstream scientific laboratories have refused so far to study this phenomenon with any kind of sensitive, sophisticated camera equipment such as they use in their other endeavours.

Nevertheless, using standard commercial cameras, a few dedicated investigators have captured on film what appear to be spacetime portals or wormholes opening up in the sky next to a newly forming crop picture (see “Crossovers from another dimension” by Terje Toftenes).

Others such as Winston Keech, Gary King and Paula Presdee-Jones have photographed a brief flash of “sheet lightning” at 3 AM, followed quickly by a new 300-meter crop formation in the field below, when no human fakers were visibly present (see New East Field Crop Circle Video Report, July 2008). As you can see from this slide (photo credits to Lucy Pringle, Winston Keech and Gary King), the sudden and mysterious appearance of that large, 300-meter East Field formation appears to have required no more than 10 minutes, and was not accompanied by any detectable human presence in the field below.

Those are the experimental facts, not the wild speculations of hoaxers or debunkers which you hear commonly on TV. Do they have any detailed facts to report? No, none at all. Over the next few years, the placement of improved cameras with greater night-time sensitivities in those fields, where crop pictures commonly appear, may reveal more of the detailed processes by which they are made.

Only one plausible hypothesis

Based on the general facts presented so far, which are accepted by practically all knowledgeable researchers in the field, one might conclude that the unknown creators of this strange crop-based messaging system possess a level of advanced technology, which is far beyond anything that ordinary humans on Earth today possess. For example, they seem to have no need for large flying saucers or UFOs, since their technology has evidently advanced beyond that point. Instead, they seem to be sending small, gravity-insensitive robotic probes across large distances of space and/or time, in order to create such amazing pictures. Those devices have been evidenced numerous times by the sighting of a small metallic orb or ball of light near a newly-formed crop picture, whether by eyewitness account or on camera (see above).

Where exactly might such probes be coming from? Another star? Another planet in our solar system? Our future or maybe even our past? Three overall classes of hypothesis have been proposed to account for these strange data, but only one seems to remain plausible as of 2008:

(i) The “human faker hypothesis”. No one is seriously promoting that anymore, even the BBC who are well known for their debunking efforts. In the light of many complex crop pictures that have appeared during the years 2001 to 2008, the human-faker hypothesis now seems far beyond the possibility of honest belief.

(ii) The “natural forces hypothesis”. The idea that wind or other natural geomagnetic energies could create crop pictures seems completely untenable today in the light of many complex crop pictures from 2001 to 2008.

(iii) The “extra-terrestrial hypothesis”. This last hypothesis now seems highly favoured, in the light of many highly coded, astronomical or mathematical crop pictures which have appeared in recent years: for example the Chilbolton “Arecibo” formation of 2001 (see The Chilbolton ‘Arecibo message’ Formation), the Crabwood “alien face” formation of 2002 (see The 2002 ‘Alien Face’ Formation), or the Barbary Castle “pi to ten digits” formation of 2008 (see below).

Such new pictures are just what one might expect from highly intelligent starfarers, who might be trying to communicate with the current inhabitants of Earth using universal symbols taken from astronomy or mathematics. For example at Barbary Castle on June 1, 2008, we saw the now-famous image of a rotary encoder that expressed a value of the universal mathematical constant pi to ten digits of accuracy as 3.141592654 (see this slide – photo credits to John Montgomery).

That amazing picture appeared during poor weather in fresh green barley. Upon early inspection of the wet field before anyone else arrived, experienced investigators such as Charles Mallett or Lucy Pringle found no footsteps or board marks anywhere, to suggest a local human means of construction. Furthermore, many of its patterned plants showed “bent nodes”, meaning that they were seemingly exposed from the air to some kind of microwave energy, that produced local heating in the plants as a means of careful and precise patterning.

For a week or so after it appeared, detailed images of that formation went out around the world via the Internet (not the mainstream news), and were seen by thousands of interested people. Yet no one could figure out what the new picture was trying to tell us. Finally on June 5, a skilled physicist-engineer from North Carolina by the name of Mike Reed (see Michael A. Reed – Biography) realized by simple inspection that it encoded the fundamental constant pi.

As you can see from this slide (photo credits to John Montgomery), each individual digit from pi = 3.14….. was drawn in the field with 36 degrees of rotation, in order to specify a full ten-digit number over four spiral turns. For example, its first digit “3″ was drawn with 3 x 36 = 108 degrees of rotation, while its second digit “1″ was drawn with 1 x 36 = 36 degrees of rotation, then its third digit “4″ was drawn with 4 x 36 = 144 degrees of rotation, and so on. There was even a small decimal point placed close to the center between digits “3″ and “1″, to tell where the fractional part of pi began.

Really, could anyone in their right mind imagine that some invisible team of local human fakers, armed with microwave patterning devices, and not leaving traceable footprints, went out late at night in poor weather near Barbary Castle: to lay down the value of pi to ten digits, without making a tiny mistake anywhere; and thereby setting out a great intellectual puzzle that took everyone in the world a whole week to solve?

So we have made some progress at addressing this difficult problem, by eliminating the “human faker” and “natural force” hypotheses. We are left therefore with some kind of “friendly extra-terrestrial” hypothesis, especially in light of the remarkable pi-to-ten-digits crop picture that appeared at Barbary Castle in 2008.

Unfortunately, a definitive answer does not come that easy. Most humans on Earth today imagine that they are completely alone in the universe, and are just waiting for some friendly group of extra-terrestrials to invite us to join an interplanetary federation. Others perhaps are fearful that unfriendly extra-terrestrials will wish to take over or invade.

Given a more thorough study of the crop circle phenomenon, neither of those two commonly-held human attitudes toward extra-terrestrial life seems accurate. We just saw that one particular crop circle from Barbary Castle on June 1, 2008 supported some kind of friendly extra-terrestrial hypothesis which could lead to open contact in the near future.

Science and the Akashic Field: An Integral Theory of Everything

In his review of the puzzles encountered at the frontiers of science, Ervin Laszlo has found that in order to account for a growing number of things and processes that are undoubtedly real and are likely to be fundamental, a new factor needs to be added to the repertory of laws and concepts of contemporary science. So he introduced “in-formation” – a subtle, quasi-instant, non-evanescent and non-energetic connection between things at different locations in space and events at different points in time.

Let us look at the principal findings of his book Science and the Akashic Field: An Integral Theory of Everything:

• Astonishingly close connections exist on the level of the quantum: every particle that has ever occupied the same quantum state as another particle remains correlated with it in a mysterious, non-energetic way.
• The universe as a whole manifests fine-tuned connections that defy commonsense explanation.
• Post-Darwinian evolutionary theory and quantum biology discover similarly puzzling connections within the organism, as well as between the organism and its milieu.
• The connections that come to light in the farther reaches of consciousness research are just as strange: they are connections between the consciousness of one person and the mind and body of another.

These connections indicate links between the particles that make up the material substance of the universe, as well as between the parts or elements of the integrated systems constituted of the particles. The links fine-tune the particles and the elements of the systems, creating space- and time-transcending coherence among them.

The surprising “nonlocal” forms of coherence crop up in fields as diverse as quantum physics, cosmology, evolutionary biology, and consciousness research. Some physicists – John Bell and Chris Clarke among them – suggest that nonlocality may be in fact the deeper reality; ordinary, so-called “classical” or “decoherent” states (states where things have a unique location and a unique set of physical characteristics) may appear merely as a consequence of the way we interact with medium-sized things – things that are neither as small as quanta nor as large as the cosmos.

Independent of the truth of such speculations, it is clear that nonlocal coherence has important implications. It signals that there is not only matter and energy in the universe, but also a more subtle yet real element: an element that connects and produces the observed quasi-instant forms of coherence.

The idea that information is present throughout nature is a recurrent theme in cultural history, but it is new to Western science. It calls for the recognition that information is not an abstract concept: as “in-formation” it has a reality of its own. It is a part of the physical universe. And since it is present throughout nature, it is best conceptualized as an extended field.

The evidence for a field that would conserve and convey information is not direct; it must be reconstructed in reference to more immediately available evidence. Like other fields known to modern physics, such as the gravitational field, the electromagnetic field, the quantum fields, and the Higgs field, the in-formation field cannot be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled. However, this field produces effects, and these can be perceived. This is the same in regard to all the fields known to science. For example, the gravitational or G-field cannot be perceived: when we drop an object to the ground, we see the object falling but not the field that makes it fall – we see the effect of the G-field but not the G-field itself.

In the case of the field that could account for the presence of in-formation in nature, the evidence is the puzzling, quasi-instant form of coherence that comes to light in the physical, cosmological, and biological sciences, as well as in consciousness research. These phenomena call for an explanation, and the simplest and most logical explanation is a field that links the entities that prove to be nonlocally coherent.

Although fields, like other entities, are not to be multiplied beyond the scope of necessity, it seems evident that a further field is required to account for the special kind of coherence revealed at all scales and domains of nature, from the microdomain of quanta, through the meso-domain of life, to the macrodomain of the cosmos. We need to recognize that just as electric and magnetic effects are conveyed by the EM-field, attraction among massive objects by the G-field, and attraction and repulsion among the particles of the nucleus by quantum fields, so nonlocal coherence is conveyed by a field: the universal in-formation field.

In his previous books Laszlo named the universal in-formation field the Akashic Field, or A-field for short. What is the reason for this name?

In the Sanskrit and Indian cultures, Akasha is an all-encompassing medium that underlies all things and becomes all things. It is real, but so subtle that it cannot be perceived until it becomes the many things that populate the manifest world. Our bodily senses do not register Akasha, but we can reach it through spiritual practice. The ancient Rishis reached it through a disciplined, spiritual way of life, and through yoga. They described their experience, and made Akasha an essential element of the philosophy and mythology of India.

The Akashic vision of a cyclic universe – of a Metaverse that creates universe after universe – is essentially the vision we now get from cosmology. In the new physics the unified, physically real vacuum is the equivalent of Akasha. It is the original field out of which emerged particles and atoms, stars and planets, human and animal bodies, and all the things that can be seen and touched. It is a dynamic, energy-filled medium in ceaseless fluctuation. The vacuum is Akasha and Prana rolled into one – the womb of all the “matter” and all the “force” in the universe.

Quantum beating in photosynthesis

Through photosynthesis, green plants and certain bacteria are able to transfer solar energy almost instantaneously from light-capturing pigment molecules into molecular reaction centers where solar energy is converted into chemical energy (see Photosynthesis goes quantum, Credit: Illustration by Nicolle Rager Fuller).  The energy transfer happens so fast and is so efficient that less than five percent is lost as heat.

How nature manages to pull off this stunt was a long-standing mystery until 2007, when a study led by Graham Fleming, Deputy Director of Berkeley Lab and a UC Berkeley chemistry professor, found the first direct evidence of what he calls a “remarkably long-lived wavelike electronic quantum coherence.” This quantum mechanical wavelike effects can explain the extreme efficiency of the energy transfer because it enables a plant’s photosystem to simultaneously sample all the potential energy pathways from pigment molecules to reaction centers and choose the most efficient one.

Fleming and his collaborators report the detection of “quantum beating” signals, coherent electronic oscillations in both donor and acceptor molecules, generated by light-induced energy excitations, like the ripples formed when stones are tossed into a pond. Electronic spectroscopy measurements made on a femtosecond (millionths of a billionth of a second) time-scale showed these oscillations meeting and interfering constructively, forming wavelike motions of energy (superposition states) that can explore all potential energy pathways simultaneously and reversibly, meaning they can retreat from wrong pathways with no penalty.

This finding contradicts the classical description of the photosynthetic energy transfer process as one in which excitation energy hops from light-capturing pigment molecules to reaction center molecules step-by-step down the molecular energy ladder. “The classical hopping description of the energy transfer process is both inadequate and inaccurate,” said Fleming. “It gives the wrong picture of how the process actually works, and misses a crucial aspect of the reason for the wonderful efficiency.”

However, as is so often the case in science, solving one mystery led to another. What is the source of this remarkably long-lived quantum coherence? A second team, again led by Fleming, believes it has found the answer. From their investigation, they conclude that the protein environment in the reaction center works collectively to keep the fluctuations of excited electronics states of pigment molecules in phase, and therefore protects quantum coherence. This is a brand-new function of the protein in the reaction center.

Fleming and his group have found that in the tightly packed complex formed by pigments and proteins, the light-induced energy excitations in the pigment molecules also set off the vibrational modes of the proteins. This creates a resonance that enhances energy transfer efficiency and is responsible for the long lifetime of the electronic coherence.

“Our results suggest that correlated protein environments preserve electronic coherence in photosynthetic complexes and allow the excitation to move coherently in space, enabling highly efficient energy harvesting and trapping in photosynthesis,” says Fleming. “Rather than simply serving as a static structure that holds the pigments in the proper geometry for efficient energy transfer to the reaction centers, as was anticipated, we find that the protein environment in the reaction centers plays a dynamic role in optimizing the efficiency of the energy transfer.”

The astonishing efficiency by which photosynthesis can transfer solar energy has made the process a prime target for scientists who would like to emulate it to help meet human energy needs. If we could effectively harness even a tiny fraction of the total solar energy available each year, we would have a clean, sustainable, and carbon-neutral source of energy to meet all our needs.

Fractal geometry

The new mechanism of evolution suggested by the new biology is one that consists of repeating patterns of self-similarity; it is a pattern based upon fractal geometry. The significance of fractals is that they represent basic patterns that are repeated over and over again. If you can recognize a pattern at one level of the structure you can apply that awareness to understand the patterns throughout the whole structure.

So basically the evolution of human civilization is self-similar the evolution of a single giant organism and we humans are the cells in that “social” organism. Dr. Bruce Lipton, author of the book titled Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles, says that human civilization will go through evolutionary phases that are redundant to previous evolution patterns.

For example, in the evolution of vertebrate animals, the pattern provided for fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, an evolutionary jump occurred between each of these major classes of organisms. Civilization is in the process of such a jump now, as we are evolving from a reptilian-based civilization to a mammalian-based civilization. The intellectual character of our culture’s leadership is currently most similar to that of reptilian behavior. And yet more advanced mammalian characters are in the process of rewriting a new blueprint for civilization, different from the way we are living now.

Reptiles are “conscious,” and do not express the trait of “self-consciousness.” What that means is that they live for the moment but they have no conception or vision about how their actions today affect civilization tomorrow. A mammalian civilization is a very different one because the character of mammals is that they are nurturers. Nurturing means to “take care of things so that the future will be better.” Mammalian civilization would be focused upon taking care of the planet, while the current reptilian government, like dinosaurs, are raping the planet for what they need at the moment with no consideration of how their actions affect the future.

In Lipton’s view of life you can see the same tendency as at some of the other sciences, like physics for instance. It’s a trend to view life, and our existence in it, as a more cooperative relationship. This is an indication that we as human beings are evolving into a higher level of human consciousness and it deals with the parallels that occurred in regard to how we evolved.

For the first three billion years of life on this planet, the biosphere contained only free-living single-celled organisms. While such microorganisms as bacteria, yeast, algae and protozoa appear to be like disconnected individual living entities, over time they actually learned how to communicate across space with each other. So bacteria, even though they appear to be separate entities, here’s a bacterium and there’s one over there, they are in fact part of a complex community. All microorganisms live in community. Their communities are based upon the fact that they exchange information with each other through chemicals and energy fields. These chemical and energy signals reflect the status of life or information so others in the community can get awareness as to what is going on in their world.

Through evolution, cell communities began to become more physically organized leading to the appearance of multicellular organisms such as fish, frogs, lizard birds and human beings. Some people like to suggest there is no direction to evolution, but indeed there really is. Evolution is an explosion principle like the Big Bang. It starts at a certain point but it doesn’t go in one direction like a ladder — with a low rung followed by a higher rung. It’s actually a sphere, and the evolution of new species fills in all available environmental niches.

And while there were lateral progressions, to the left and to the right, they do not express evolutionary “advances” over one another. But at some point when you’re building left and right, then the next step is to elevate. The one characteristic that is uniform throughout the entire biosphere is that evolutionary advances are characterized by their ability to handle more awareness.

So from the evolution of prokaryotes (e.g., bacteria) to eukaryotes (e.g., amoeba, paramecium), one of the striking features is the increase in cell membrane; there’s 100,000 times more membrane in an eukaryotic cell than there is in a bacterium. Lipton’s research, using enucleated cells (cells in which the nucleus and its contained genes are removed), reveals that the behavior of cells is not interrupted. These studies emphasize that genes do not control life.

Subsequent research revealed that the brain of the cells was actually the cell’s membrane. The only membrane in a bacterium is just its outer skin. When you look at the higher-level eukaryotic cells, not only do they have an enveloping cell membrane but they also have many membrane organelles within the cell, such as mitochondria, nuclei, Golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum, things like that. All those are cell membrane-derivatives. They have more membranes which directly translates as more capacity to process awareness.

However, there was a point where a cell could not further expand the amount of membrane it contained, for if the cell became any larger, the physical pressure of the contained cytoplasm would cause the membrane to rupture like a water balloon that has too much water in it. Cells reached a certain physical size and if they got any bigger the membrane would break and the cells would die. So the first three billion years of evolution was focused on making smarter and smarter cells. When the limits of cell size was reached, evolution stopped for there was no way to add any more membrane.

So the course of evolution seemed to flatten out with all the varieties of single-celled organisms. But evolution continued with a new way to accumulate more membrane. Rather than increasing the membrane within a single cell, cells started to come together in close proximity and share the awareness expressed in their collective membranes. If a cell has X amount of awareness (available membrane) and it can “plug-in” to other cells, they could directly share their awareness. In the end, the awareness of a community of cells can be expressed as X times the number of cells comprising the community. Evolution began to advance as well as life’s efficiency when cells joined together into community.

We characterize the different types of evolving cell communities in regard to the shape the multicellular organisms create. For example, single-celled amoebas may form a community that has a stalk and tentacles. This ”community” might be called a hydra. A larger group of cells may organize their community into what we refer to as a clam. An even larger group of cells may acquire the “shape” of a cat. And then again, an even larger community of single cells may acquire the shape of something we refer to as a human. Communities of cells are described as unique organisms, and we give those multicellular organisms specific identities.

We may look in the mirror and perceive of ourselves as “singular” entities, each bearing a unique name and identity. But in fact, our bodies are actually the expression of a “social” community of approximately 50 trillion cooperative single-celled organisms. Why are we here? Over the millions and millions of years of evolution, cells created more advanced “aware” communities. The human body is an example of cellular architecture that provides for an extremely intelligent life form.

Over time, the evolution of maxed-out intelligent organizations provided for humans, dolphins and other higher organizations, suggesting that we have possibly reached the highest level of organic evolution. Does that mean evolution has reached an endpoint? In one sense, the answer is yes. But as revealed in the self-similar character of fractal geometry, the process of evolution would repeat itself. Humans recapitulate the situation that arose with the appearance of single cells. Humans are in a sense evolutionarily similar to single cells. When evolution reached the endpoint of single cells, it changed strategies and began to evolve through the assembly of single cells into community.

Individual humans are essentially advanced “single cells.” Like cells, we have come together in community over the years to share awareness. Social assemblies has provided for an evolving form of humanity (civilization). We are now at the stage of organization where our assembly provides for an “organism” with the character of reptiles but our future advancements will help shape humanity so that we will express the nurturing character of mammals.

All the higher levels of organizations, from cells to humans represent organizations that have evolved through their ability to communicate awareness. We are manifesting that in our outer world as libraries, postal services, and now the Internet. The Internet especially, because that’s what cells had to evolve before massive multicellular communities could manifest. Cells developed mechanisms by which they could instantly communicate information throughout the entire systems, so that a skin cell, a liver cell, and a bone cell, would instantaneously know when you’re having a good or bad moment.

Human evolution means that we’re going to have six billion different individual perceptions that will provide a full spectrum of awareness to collective community known as humanity. And despite the fact that our current reptilian mindset is fighting this evolution, the reality demands the inevitable evolutionary step in which we’re going to leave behind our reptilian fight-or-flight behavior, the struggle for existence awareness provided by Darwin. The next level of evolution will endorse that cooperation among the “cells,” in contrast to the current notion of competition, is the ultimate step to our evolution and survival.

It seems like it takes so many subatomic particles to make an atom, so many atoms to make a molecule, so many molecules to make a cell, and it might take so many people to bring this about. Consider each human as a unique set of eyes understanding the universe. The more eyes … the more awareness. It’s simple logic. That’s why this next jump in our evolution is going to be a very rapid change, for it primarily depends upon a simple rewriting of our current beliefs. Based upon that lightning speed in the advances of our communication technology, it will be very soon when all citizens of civilization will be “wired” into the planet’s collective awareness. In the very near future we will resemble cells in our ability to instantaneous share awareness and experiences. When the wiring’s in place, what happened 10 minutes ago will be known by everybody on the planet.

It seems like the quest and the thrust of life is to self organize into higher and more complex organisms for the soul purpose, of evolving into ever-higher levels of awareness and consciousness. We can see us continuing this process as human beings linking together to form a planetary consciousness. Gaia, the planet, is itself a living cell and we are part of the Earth’s membrane.

As described in the Lipton’s book, we’re the equivalent of proteins in the cell’s membrane. The membrane’s proteins are the physical units of awareness. Humans are like organic antennas, downloading the Universe’s information. The beautiful part is that when we wake up, become more aware, we will find that all humans are a part of the same organism, Humanity. When that awareness is owned by civilization, that knowledge will complete the Earth’s evolution, for then we and the environment we live in, will cooperatively function as a single living cell. Then, as in all the previous evolutionary stages that has led us to this point, this single cell (Earth) then joins up with the other planetary “cells” to share our collective awareness. And so on and on …

We’re talking about galactic consciousness that’s so far beyond even our wildest imagination, but we have hints that that consciousness is there, even though we are not! We are not evolved enough to dialogue with the other forms of planetary consciousness. When the Earth completes the current evolutionary process and we recognize our wholeness, the Earth will represent itself as a single mature cell. At that time, we will hook up with other mature “cells,” other planets, with life forms. The same way that molecules assembled into cells, cells assembled into organisms and organisms assemble into communities … it’s a fractal thing … it’s implied in the geometry that it must go that way.

It is an exciting time to be alive but in different regards for the humans now present in our world. For those evolving a new “mammalian” consideration of life, they will see the possibilities of the future, and the joy of living in the Light. However, for those that maintain their “reptilian” perceptions, it will be “exciting” but in a negative way for they’re certainly locked in their beliefs about the struggles in life and their fear of death. In the end, one side is going to walk away from this evolutionary leap and become whole, while those on the other side are going to be embroiled in the crises generated by their ancient, limiting thinking.

Global scaling

We like to think in linear scales and are used to measure in nice and regular intervals. Other scales are unknown to us. All of natural science itself uses linear measures in the mathematical descriptions of many of its models. Serious doubts about the actual usefulness of these simple scales for the measurement of natural structures came with the discovery of fractal dimensions. The advent and mass production of personal computers made it possible to create beautiful and astonishingly natural-looking shapes using only very simple algorithms.

However, already 30 years ago biologists (Schmidt-Nielsen, Shnoll, Cislenko, Shirmunski et.al.) had discovered that organisms whose body sizes proved to be within certain ranges of measurement seemed to have much better chances of survival and reproduction. Surprisingly, this appears to be independent of the type of specie investigated.

The decisive discovery came from the Ukranian biologist Cislenko. In 1981 he published the results of 23 years of research that showed unequivocally that biologically favourable measures are situated at equal distances along a logarithmic scale. Cislenko was able to prove this fact for 4727 different mammalian species, over 5000 different kinds of reptiles, 452 bird kinds, some 1900 kinds of amphibia, 381 kinds of sweet water fish, 218 fish of the northern polar sea, more than 21000 kinds of insects, as well as numerous plants, fungi and bacteria. Nowadays, this phenomenon is recognized as logarithmic scaling in the frequency distribution of biological species with reference to the body size and body mass of organisms.

At about the same time physicists discovered a similar phenomenon of scaling (logarithmic scale invariance) in the frequency distribution of elementary particles based on the particles’ rest mass (Bjorken, Feinmann, Müller). In 1982 Hartmut Müller was able to show this for all known particles, nuclei and atoms, but also for asteroids, moons, planets and stars.

Scaling is a global phenomenon, in fact, it may be the very blueprint of the universe itself. In a series of articles (1982 – 1989, Institute for Scientific-Technical Information of the Russian Academy of Sciences) Müller first published the fundamentals of a theory of Global Scaling which today can be regarded as one of the best confirmed hypotheses within the natural sciences. It is based on the statistical analysis of gigantic amounts of data and is being successfully applied in science and technology today.

In depth mathematical investigation of the phenomenon has shown that the concept of standing wave processes is the most likely and appropriate model to yield these structures. At the bottom of the Global Scaling phenomenon there are standing wave processes on the logarithmic (and not on the linear) scale of measures. Regarding real physical scales, such as the distribution of masses in the universe, a model of vacuum waves and matter waves can be applied. Such wave processes do in fact manifest themselves in nature and can be technologically exploited.

Global Scaling Theory is the first of its kind to mathematically describe the distribution of preferred parameter values in nature and is also able to explain the cause for this distribution. The sum of probabilities that makes a certain physical value appear at a certain position along the logarithmic scale can be graphically represented by means of the so-called Müller fractal.

Knowledge of just this fractal set combined with additional understanding as to how the fractal is used in a specific application allows the Global Scaling engineer to quickly and efficiently prognosticate values and parameters that otherwise would have been found only through a tedious process of trial and error. Thus it is not surprising that applications that have worked in a stable way for several decades will show measures completely compatible with Global Scaling.

The mathematical realisation that the distribution of natural measures is determined by standing wave processes does in fact manifest in the physical world. As a result, for example, space (vacuum) waves can form that can be clearly differentiated from the known electromagnetic wave of radio transmissions. In Global Scaling the general term for this kind of wave is the G-wave (in analogy to the gravitational wave), where the G-wave, however, must also be differentiated from Einsteinian gravitational waves.

The significant difference between G-waves and electromagnetic waves or Einsteinian waves lies in the fact that G-waves do not propagate in space and time but exist – in macroscopic analogy to the known phenomenon of non-locality in quantum physics – everywhere simultaneously.

Using appropriate technologies these wave processes can be technically exploited and will open the way for completely new applications. One obvious application is the transmission of information using G-waves as the already existing channels (carriers) for communication. A first public demonstration of wireless language transmissions without an artificially generated carrier frequency was carried out between Moscow and Bad Tölz (Germany) in 2001.

Meanwhile, several European universities have shown an interest in this original method for wireless data transfer which is able to overcome great distances both through the air, the vacuum, and even solid bodies at extremely low energies. When carried out correctly, this form of data exchange occurs without any of the known biological side effects of electromagnetic waves. One Austrian university is currently putting forward the G-Com technology together with the inventing team of the Institute of Space-Energy-Research in Wolfratshausen, Germany.

Another public demonstration of G-Com technology has taken place in 2004 at the Technical University of Berlin. Here data transfer between two notebooks has been demonstrated. All that is required is a particular piece of software. That is why the procedure can be demonstrated on a computer from the audience.

It is easily conceivable that this form of G-Com technology is far from the only possible application of the theory of Global Scaling – which incidentally was also used successfully for payload optimisation within the space program Energija/Buran of the former Sovjet Union. Beside the possibility for optimising lucrative process parameters, Global Scaling also offers possibilities of new and fundamental innovations that will be as fascinating and far-reaching as were formerly the inventions of the steam engine, the alternating current or the semiconductor.
