During his duration at SF State, Coppola pushed for the existence of the Fine Arts building which resulted in the creation of studios and offices for Arts, Cinema, Dance and Design and Industry.

The August Coppola Theater in the Fine Arts building was named after him in September 1997 for his work on the building.

Coppola taught literature and served as dean of the college of creative arts at San Francisco State. At the university, he successfully lobbied for a new Creative Arts Building, which now honors him with the 150-seat August Coppola Theatre.

In 1991, instead of leading a groundbreaking for a planned addition to San Francisco State's creative arts complex, Coppola hosted a "skybreaking" because, he said: "The idea is to look up, rather than down -- look up to the sky, the clouds, teach young people to dream."
