On Thursday, November 5th 2009, at the Open Mobile Summit conference in San Francisco. Palm demonstrated “Ares”, a Web-based development environment for WebOS applications. It will be coming to the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi smartphones by the end of this year through the WebOS developer site.

According to Palm, Ares will give developers a faster way write WebOS applications through a drag-and-drop interface. Senior Vice President of Application Software and Services at Palm; Michael Abbott said that Ares It’s designed to help Web developers make the leap to becoming mobile developers.

According to Abbott, Ares won’t require any downloads or configuration. And “the environment includes debugging and a mechanism for developers to share libraries and APIs (application programming interfaces).” A Palm engineer created a search application for the Flickr Web photo site in a live demonstration at the conference, just to show how easy this new tool will be.

So the Palm Pre is finally across the pond, in Europe, and many of our European friends want to have the Pre in a different carrier than O2. Well, apparently, now they can, although not in a really elegant way I must say. But hey, who cares, as long as they get it with the carrier of their choice and enjoy our beloved black pebble.

As you can see on the image above, this Pre is working with 3G on T-Mobile’s network. The guy who made this happen goes by the nick ‘phelyer’ on youtube. He used a Rebel Sim Card to do this. Although in this video he clears the network key in his old phone before inserting the SIM into the Palm Pre, he says that is something that doesn’t need to be done.

According to phelyer, he just did that to better illustrate that the Rebel Sim Card can make a fresh connection in the Palm Pre. Of course that if you live in Europe and want a Palm Pre unlocked, you can always do as the Italian guy did back in October; just buy an unlocked Pre with the QWERTZ keyboard from Germany.

Well, it seems like Sprint doesn’t just have “system errors” on pricing for the first webOS device. Apparently, some of the errors happen on other things, like when they announced the early release of the 1.2 update for webOS, remember that one?

This time, there’s another “error”, but is not about the price of the Palm Pre or about an update to webOS. Now the error is on the Sprint holiday page, where you see upfront the next webOS device; the Palm Pixi. Yea, that is not the error, as we all know, the Pixi is coming in just a few days. The main problem or error, is that one of the features that Sprint is claiming on the Pixi has to do with WiFi capabilities.

And most, if not all of us here know that the upcoming Palm Pixi doesn’t have WiFi. Either someone messed up really bad by doing a copy and paste from the product description of the first webOS phone, the Pre, or that someone did not get the memo on the Pixi’s real features. Well, the problem has been fixed now, as you can see on the first image.

But also, the GPS navigation capability has been taken out, together with the “Huge touchscreen and full QWERTY keyboard.” Does this mean that the Pixi will not have GPS navigation? Or even worse, it may not have a touchscreen and full QWERTY keyboard, since all that was taken out and replaced by just “Keyboard”. Okay, I’m going crazy here, but hey, it’s not my fault, blame whoever made that mistake on Sprint’s webpage.

As most of you already know, Apple has broken iTunes sync with the Palm Pre yet again. Yes, it is unfortunate for those who rely solely on that to sync their Pre. Well, there are other options out there you know? But if you are still waiting on Palm to fix it, you might get lucky.

You see, the rumor now is that Palm is already distributing webOS 1.3.1 to select developers. Well, more than a rumor, this might be true, we know the Palm Pixi will arrive in the next few days. And apparently, developers are getting early access to the webOS 1.3.1 SDK for beta testing with their apps, most likely, for any compatibility issues.

When exactly will this update arrive, well, we don’t klnow, as we don’t know if it will fix the iTunes sync with the Pre. The rumors have been also saying that the Europeans might get the next update the same day we get it here in the US. For now, there is no confirmation from Palm, but the Pixi will soon arrive, all we have to do is wait just a little longer.

For the last couple of days we have seen the official App Catalog grow in numbers little by little, up to now, there are 314 apps. That is not bad at all, and according to the latest rumors, when the Palm Pixi arrives in November 15th, we will see not only more apps in the Catalog, but also an update to webOS.

Well, those are rumors anyway, but is hard to dismiss the tentative of getting webOS 1.3 as soon as November 15th. Specially when we know a Facebook app, along with another goodies will be arriving with the release of the Pixi. Now don’t get me wrong, all the latest apps are good, and we can find some pretty good gems, but we really need Palm to bring a lot more than those.

But I guess that doesn’t have to worry everyone out there, I mean, after all, you have been using something else instead of the infamous iTunes. Right?

Well, there are more options to sync your Pre, but if you still are counting on iTunes, than don’t worry, I reckon anyway. You see, there have been a lot of rumors out there, about a webOS update coming on November 15th, when the Palm Pixi comes out to the public. According to those rumors, webOS 1.3 is coming out on that date.

So, as you can see, Palm will have to come up with their own syncing software, or will be playing this cat and mouse game that is becoming old by now. And yes, I know, Apple should not treat its customers – no matter from what platform they are – as bad as they are treating the Palm customers of iTunes. But hey, Apple has become evil lately, so what did you expect?

The staff at PCWorld put togheter a list of the best products of the year, called “PC World Top 100″. The Palm Pre was honored with the 14th place. For most of us Pre owners, it should’ve been number one, but, oh well, it wasn’t up to us anyway.

Between the AMD processor called Phenom II, which made number 13th on the list, and the famous e-book reader; the Amazon Kindle 2 (number 15 on the list). There it was, with a little description, on the 14th spot, our beloved Palm Pre.

Here’s what PCWorld had on their description of item # 14 of the Top 100 of 2009:

14. Palm Pre (smartphone, $150 with two-year Sprint contract) The Pre wowed us with its engaging (and fun to use) WebOS software and eye-catching hardware. Thanks to the Pre’s responsive multitouch screen, its intuitive gesture-based controls, and WebOS’s beautiful way of organizing information, this smartphone is a pleasure to use. The keyboard may not be perfect, but that’s a minor trade-off for everything else the Pre offers.

So the latest is that AT&T might get the Palm Pre even before than Verizon. I don’t think that’ll be the case but hey, that’s just me. Many belive that big blue will get the Palm Pixi instead of the Pre, we have seen the Pixi on AT&T’s roadmap before, but so far, all this is just speculation.

By now, most of you already know that even Verizon’s CEO Lowell McAdam has said that the wireless carrier would have Palm’s webOS device in January. So maybe AT&T is just jealous, or trying to rob some thunder from big red, who knows?

The thing is, AT&T does want the Palm Pre in its arsenal. Since AT&T might lose exclusivity of the iFruit in the coming months, maybe the Palm Pre will be perfect for them. Like Jon Rubinstein said before; “it’s nice to be the pretty girl at the dance”.

Let’s hope, for Palm’s sake, that the Pre goes to all the possible carriers out there. And that, wherever the Pre goes, it becomes a hit.

Well, last time we had news of a Pre using some kind of superpowers, was when some drunken idiot try to kill his Palm Pre by drowning the phone into beer. Heck, the Pre stayed up and running a little over a minute before going to cellphone heaven.

This time, someone try to kill his Palm Pre by decapitation. Now that is pure evil, I know, but the little smartphone didn’t let the guy – that goes by the name of Zack – have it his way, heck no! Even after Zack snapped his Pre in half, the Pre was still alive, ALIVE! As you can see on the image above.

So there you have it folks, the Pre is hard to kill by drowning into beer, heck, some people believe that Pre is dead not because of drowning in liquid, but because that beer was of very poor quality. It won’t die by decapitation either, unless of course you completly separate the head from the body, zombie style.

Also remember that the Pre hangs around with several Heroes. And if you digg a litlle deeper into your memory, you might recall that Roger McNamee has said in the past that the Pre has Alien Technology and is better than Viagra. So maybe it does have superpowers afterall.
