Even if someone uses your WiFi Network and posts something offensive or uploads a classified document , you are held responsible as well . If someone publishes something using your name which you were not aware of , you would be held responsible as well. You could be even charge under the sedition act or even under different acts as well.

Section 114A states that :-

– a person whose name, photograph or pseudonym appears on any publication depicting himself as the owner, host, administrator, editor or sub-editor, or who in any manner facilitates to publish or re-publish the publication is presumed to have published or re-published the contents of the publication unless the contrary is proved.

– a person who is registered with a network service provider as a subscriber of a network service on which any publication originates from is presumed to be the person who published or re-published the publication unless the contrary is proved.

– Any person who has in his custody or control any computer on which any publication originates from is presumed to have published or re-published the content of the publication unless the contrary is proved. (Computer here means any data processing device, including tablets, laptops and mobile phones.)

These kind of laws aren’t something new. Let us take an example , if your friend decides to take your car and starts violating the speed limit. It is you that would be charged (the owner of the car) and not your friend – such law exists and this is not something new. My biggest question is about its implementation and how is it being executed – So if you are charged for something that you did not did or if your friend decided to pull a prank. You need to provide evidence that it was not you or otherwise you would be charged. Imagine paraody accounts of Malaysian celebrities or even politicians on twitter as well. Would that mean the actual celebrity would be charged ? What would the implications be ? I would also like to know if there are such rules in place in other countries , if so how they are being dealt with ?

My Thoughts

Let’s take a closer look and let me state my thoughts .I think it would be a step backwards and I am quite sure that some number of bloggers would start moderating comments before they are published or even worst – they might disable comments all together as they do not want to be held accountable. Yes , no dobut if you own a site or something you are responsible for its content , but the question is what if you are not the person who actually committed it , in this case of identity theft. No doubt that identity theft is becoming much more common even in Malaysia , whereby people unknowingly give out their bank account number to scammers (I am quite sure that we have read such cases in newspaper) . My question and what I would like to know is how the law is going to be used and how is it going to be executed ? What if you are forced to accept the blame even though you know that you did not do it ?

There are lots of questions which I need to seek answer and research and most importantly to get feedback from my fellow readers

My Advice

Just monitor your blog or your facebook from time to time. Even if you are no longer blogging , try to disable comments or enable moderation (this is applicable if you are an inactive blogger or you plan to take ‘off’). Take a look at the article that you are about to post , make sure that you have sufficient evidence to back up your claims , if not just do not bother posting . If you have WiFi in your place , make sure that it is secured properly , this is true even if you are running a restaurant or providing free wifi services for your customers. Its a good way of learning to take responsibility over your blog/facebook and start learning on how to secure your facebook and your Internet identity as well

I do hope to hear from fellow bloggers on what they are going to do about it. As for me, I am going to a bit of research on this topic and see what I could gather

In this tutorial , I’ll be guiding you on how to enable 4GB of RAM on Windows 7 32-bit. This is handy especially if you are planning to use your old Windows 32-bit without the hassle of going through reformatting and re installing Windows 7 64-bit as there is no way to upgrade from 32-bit OS to 64-bit OS. Before we start , be sure to backup your system and you also would also need to download the patch here . If you prefer to do it for yourself , scroll down and read

DISCLAIMER : Bear in mind that we are going to change our system here. For instance you may enter Twlight Realm and you may be a fan of Justin Bieber afterwards. I am not held responsible if such incident occurs. So be sure to backup your system before attempting to do so.

Physical Address Extension (PAE) - Allows processors in 32-bit to address more than 4GB of RAM Source: Microsoft TechNet

Simply run the patch and select patch 4GB of RAM and reboot ! If you did correctly , voila you should see something like this. Congratulations , now your 32-bit Windows 7 supports > 4GB of RAM !

More after the jump (to know about the technical details)

Why bother tweaking Windows 7 32-bit ?

As you may have guessed. There is a 64-bit version of Windows 7 which supports more than 4GB of RAM. But suppose if you are still using 32-bit of Windows and have upgraded your RAM and still insist of keeping your Windows (as you have tons of collections of stuff installed). This is where the patch comes handy. It just allows 32-bit Windows 7 to see more than 4GB of RAM.

So how does this magically tweak work ?

It is simply. This tweak pretty much hacks the kernel to support Physical Address Extension or PAE . Basically all processors do have PAE , what PAE does is that it allows 32-bit OSes to see more than 4GB of RAM. It acts as a translator , trying to break the limit of 32-bit. Yes there is a limit , but with the help of CPU , the limit can be broken and the Operating System can someone see this RAM. Instead of accessing directly , it uses PAE to acts a translator to address memory location beyond the 4GB realm. Remember that 32-bit processor can only address 4GB of memory space , this extends it to 36-bit (or sometimes up to 40-bit). So with the help of CPU and if the OS (Operating System) supports PAE , you could address this issue. For some reason Microsoft did not enable it for Home Operating Systems such as Windows. However PAE is enabled in many other Operating Systems such as MacOSX 10.5 and above and Linux (provided the 32-bit kernel is compiled with PAE)

What are the drawbacks ?

There is one – you are still limited by the law of physics and computing. Well , you can’t play God here !. Since our system is 32-bit , therefore the instructions are still in 32-bit and we are still bounded by 32-bit instructions .Suppose if you have 6GB of RAM and you have PAE turned on and you want to use Lightroom for instance – even at most Lightroom can only use up to 4GB. It can’t use anything beyond that. This is because that the instructions are in 32-bit still. So in other words applications can only ‘see and use’ up to 4GB. Anything beyond that , they can’t use at all.

If that’s the case , what are the advantages ?

Firstly you would have more memory which means that you could run more applications on your 32-bit system. Without PAE enabled (suppose if you have 8GB of RAM installed , Windows would only see and address up to 4GB). Imagine if you want to run photoshop and lightroom concurrently , it would not be possible. However with PAE turned on you could run these programs in main memory. Even though the application can only use maximum up to 4GB of RAM. You could now able to load these applications in RAM directly which should increase your productivity (since program takes less time to load if they are located in memory compared to hard disk)

I like to get my hands dirty. So how do I do it myself ?

Kindly read the guide here. In fact that site helped me to write this guide that explains the concept in plain English

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qmp-5tv731M

It prints relatively fast as you could see in the video (faster compared to Inkjet printers which are priced the same) . The printing quality is not bad at all (bear in mind I turned on eco-saving features so probably it has toned down on sharpness to save toner’s ink)

Final Thoughts

Lastly , here are my thoughts. If you are a student who prints their lecture notes for revision and stuff and wants an affordable printer , this is the printer that you are looking for. The additional things that the printer includes is pretty much one of its kind , that you can’t find in any other printer of this price range. However if you are kind of person who would like to print things in colour or are just looking for a multi-function printer , sorry to say that this printer is for you at all. You are better off with an Inkjet printer. I’ve summed it up all in a simple pros and cons point form

Pros

Affordable Price & Compact

Broad Compatibly (works with Windows and Mac)

Toner which lasts pretty long

Awesome Bundled Software (suc as Eco Drive)

Cons

Noise of the Printer (It can get a bit loud at times)

No Automatic Double-Sided Printing Capabilities

No Stop Hardware Button if you want to abort Printing

Again this printer is great. Some of the cons or drawbacks of the printer are outweighed by the benefit. For instance there the hardware physical stop button is replaced by SAMSUNG Eco Drive so you could review your pages before printing , but however I still prefer a hardware stop button. That’s just being me. Overall , this is the first time I am using a monochrome laser printer (and reviewing a printer) and it seems to be perfect for my everyday use. Not only its affordable as I have pointed out early but it is also compact. SAMSUNG does deserve some praises in this area. So kudos SAMSUNG , hope that you guys could release a laser printer that allows to print colour pages in this similar price range

Overall Rating : 4/5

Acknowledgements

I would like to say that its not a sponsored post by Samsung but more towards the printer itself. The review can be negative or positive as they have spent out that each reviewers have their freedom of expression to express their thoughts. I would also like to thank SAMSUNG for providing me with the review unit

In the previous section of the review , we took a look at price/performance ratio and the hardware aspects of the printer such as its size. In this segment , we will take a look on the software aspect of the printer.

More after the jump

Setting up the printer

Setting up the printer was a breeze. All I had to do on my MacBook Pro was to plug the printer and MacOS X automatically installed a driver for me and the printer worked out of the box. But for this test , I’ll be conducting the review on a Windows computer as majority of students and people are using Windows computer.

For this purpose , I have decided to test it on my HP tc4400 Tablet PC computer which is running on an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz , 2GB of RAM and Windows 7. Installation is pretty simple by putting in the CD and installing it. Suppose if you are installing on a laptop or netbook without CD-ROM Driver (which is becoming more and more common) , drivers can be obtained from SAMSUNG’s Site or by clicking here

SAMSUNG Printer Installation

Installation was a breeze. After answering few questions and after printer detection (which took couple of seconds). Driver Installation was on its way

Printer was quick detected and drivers were installed

Kudos SAMSUNG. The installation is not a bloatware nor it installs a lot of unwanted stuff which can make your PC to slowdown.

SAMSUNG Easy Printer Manager

SAMSUNG Easy Printer Manager acts like a command centre. From here you could view every detail about your printer - from its toner level till how many papers are left to print or sent to printer. It also alerts you whenever your toner is low.

Samsung Easy Printer Manager - Your one stop shop for your printer details

It also allows you to set when your printer should sleep and other advance settings

Samsung Easy Printer Manager Settings

Its a neat software , but probably you would use it when you want to troubleshoot or to view your toner level

SAMSUNG Easy Eco Driver

For some reason , SAMSUNG Easy Eco Driver did not get enabled by default for me. I had to change it in Print Settings (Printer Preferences) and put a small tick here

SAMSUNG ML-2160 Printer Settings

It may be enabled by default if you have installed from CD , since I did not have any CD-ROM Drive on this PC , I could not test that. But certainly when you download driver from the Internet , it is not turned on by default. I do hope that SAMSUNG takes note of this and prompts the user during installation if they want this feature or not (this would be great).

Anyhow , let us take a look at how Easy Eco Driver works. When you print something , Eco Driver will send it to a buffer or to a temporary location and then it will prompt you on if you want to use any of its eco-saving features such as removing images/graphics or scaling them down. This is ideal say if you are student and you want to print tons of reference material to support your thesis or your assignment. For instance I tried to print an article from The Star . Eco Driver shows how it looks like when you turn or turn off the settings. This is how it looks like for me with its default settings

SAMSUNG Easy Eco Driver - Default Selection

Now , after playing around with it. I’ve managed to get it to tweak. For some reason remove images turns the image into white. The nice thing about the software is that it tells you how much energy, money, toner, paper that you are saving by adjusting the settings

SAMSUNG Easy Eco Driver - After some tweak

There are tons of settings that you could play with and best of all you could store these settings , for instance everytime you would like to print a news article , just use your ‘news article’ from preset. I would like to take this opportunity to praise SAMSUNG for providing a simple to use interface for people to remove unwanted stuff when they are printing from the Internet or even from their lecture slides to save some ink. Its a win-win situation , it helps the owner to cut costs on paper usage , toner usage and not to mention helps our environment. Thank You SAMSUNG.

A suggestion is that if the application can detect from where its printing (i.e Internet Explorer/Firefox/Chrome , it should automatically apply a certain profile).

Kindly click here to read Part 3 , whereby I test the printing speed and sum my thoughts on the printer

Malaysians (and quite sure the rest of the us) truly love Free WiFi. No doubt that you see tons of Malaysians love to spend time in Cafe such as Starbucks , Coffee Bean , SF Coffee for hours by just buying a small cup of latte (or their favorite drink) and sitting there for an entire day and downloading their favorite animes. Of course some of us go to these places for group discussion or to meet people or to do some ‘mission critical’. Others even use Cafes as their secondary office – meeting new clients and sealing off deals.

WiFi Hotspots are becoming more and more common in this era as users are getting tech-savvy (Picture from popfi.com)

The biggest concern is security. This is why there is even an article in The Star , which inspired me to write myself this article One may ask what are the risks involved and how you can protect yourself when using Free WiFi. More after the jump

Risks

Now let us talk about risks involved. Firstly , Free WiFi is not secure (regardless if it is password protected – that is just to scare away free riders. As long if the place offers WiFi for free for its customers , it is not secure). A bad guy could be on the network and passively listening conversation. Just think of wire tapping . You may not know , this guy will know what sites have you been visiting , he/she can even know your passwords . By exploiting the principle of ‘users-use-the same-password-for-everything’ , pretty much she/he can get access to your Online Banking , Corporate E-mail/Intranet Access. Even worst , what if you are pretty , a creepy stalker may just get ‘details’ of your facebook account and start stalking you. To sum it up , joining a free WiFi is pretty much like being naked. You are exposed

You may never know what is going on the other side of the network (Picture from topone2u.blogspot.com)

Apart of being ‘watched’ , there are other risks as well. Recently , Liew CF shared an article on twitter and it caught my attention. Its about an Hotel that caught injecting advertisements into web pages on their Free WiFi Network. Now there are Free WiFi Hotspots that would require you to enter your e-mail address. It may seem harmless , but be warned that you could be spammed by advertisers and who knows that even your ‘surfing habits’ could be sold to advertisers for money

Thankfully there are number of ways you can take to protect yourself

Mitigating Risks

No , this is not a course on Risk Management 101. I am just sharing few tips that would help to mitigate your risks of being ‘watched’ or being ‘hacked’ , when you are using Public WiFi. This security tip is also applicable in other cases (for instance if you are sharing an Internet Connection with your ‘geeky’ friends , probably you may want to get a VPN as well. Trust me , you do not want to make them angry)

1. Using VPN – VPN works like a ‘tunnel’ . Basically instead of you connecting directly to the Internet via WiFi Hotspot , you’ll be routed through a special server. Of course it makes it harder for hackers to track you if in this way. All your Internet activity are hidden from hackers view, all they could see is that you are sending some stuff over to a server , thats about it. There are numerous of VPN providers , generally you would have to pay. However if you insist on a free VPN Service and do not mind ‘advertistments’ but prefer a much more secure connection , I would recommend Hotspot Shield

2. Using Disposable Email/Spam Mail – Some Wireless Hotspot requires you to sign up for a free account which prompts you for your personal details such as your name , e-mail address. Generally it is a good idea in order to avoid your primary e-mail address from getting spammed. You should use a secondary (or what I would call it as spam mail) e-mail address solely for this purpose. Alternatively , you may want to use a disposable e-mail address. These are one-time use e-mail address which is valid for several hours before they expire and die.

3. Do not visit any Banking Sites - This is very important. Do not ever perform any sort of banking transaction when you are in a wifi hotspot or in public places. You may never know , you might just get hacked. Despite the fact the banking site is secure , bear in mind that hackers can sniff the data from the hotspot since every data has to go through the wireless hotspot before being sent to the bank.

4. Do not enter username/password for sites that do not use HTTPS - When you preform online banking , logging into twitter or even facebook. You would notice that it uses https instead of http. It simply means that its a secured HTTPS that the data being sent and received are encrypted . Now when you login to some forum or sites which don’t use HTTPS , it may be sent as plaintext or MD5-hashed (the latter is more secure and commonly used). Now suppose if you are using the same password for everything (which normally people do and I do it myself – yes that is our nature) , chances are hackers could pretty much get every single thing , right from your banking details to your e-mail account and possibly your World of Warcraft account too !

5. Using 3G Connection - No silly , we are not talking about watching porn in Starbucks and not getting caught . Suppose that you are meeting your client in Starbucks. Your client decided to go ahead with your proposal and wishes to transfer money securely. What would you do ? . The answer is relatively simple , if you have a data plan for your iPhone , Android , BlackBerry – chances are you may able to tether the connection (again depending on your carrier and data plan). Using 3G connection to conduct such transactions are much much more secure compared to doing it over WiFi as prying eyes (and ears) aren’t able to sniff packets to know what you are doing. Suppose if you do not have any data-enabled phone at that time (or your battery has ran out) , VPN is another alternative solution.

Conclusion

These are some of the things that you could do when you are using your computer , tablet , mobile phone in a cafe. However bear in mind that Hotspots is not meant to replace your Primary Internet Connection (such as DSL or Cable or 3G/4G Wireless) nor it is your primary Internet Connection. If you are constantly on the move , consider getting a 3G/4G Wireless Internet , or alternatively subscribe for DSL service at home . Think twice about your data before using Free WiFi

If you have any suggestions or recommendation , kindly do leave your comment. I would read it and incorporate it

Printers are essential for two things – printing reports and printing notes. It becomes an essential tool for every student who is currently in college or university. It is because more and more of our lecture material , tutorial questions are being posted online. Not to mention that printing them in your college/university could be a hassle – especially when everyone is using the library printer for instance – you will see people printing their assignments at the 11th hour or simply printing the entire stack of lecture notes , tutorial questions for the semester and not to mention that at times , the printer could broke down and most importantly – printing in university could be expensive

Now you may say that if there is only a way I could get the awesomeness of university printer for my personal use and which does not cost a bomb. Thankfully your prayers have been answered – SAMSUNG ML-2160 series printer. A printer that is easy on the wallet and the environment too – and not to mention that it’s a laser printer (similar to the ones used in your university for printing documents)

Specifications & Comparison with other Laser Printers

Here are the official specification for SAMSUNG 2160 and SAMSUNG 2165W . The only difference is that 2165W supports 802.11/b/g/n (yes it supports 802.11n) and 2160 has a one-touch button that allows you to print the content of the screen

I would like to highlight few aspects of these printers. They all come with a toner pre-installed (that allows you to print up to 700 pages) and the printer prints 20 pages per minute . The cost is RM 299 and RM 349 (for the wireless model) respectively . Now if you compare it with other laser printer models which I’ve listed below

Cycom PriceList (as of 23rd March 2012)

You’ll certainty notice that SAMSUNG M-2160 is very well priced compared to other printers such such as HP Mono LaserJet P1102 and Canon-LBP 6000 which does 18 and 14 pages per minute. On top of that the additional features such as Easy Eco Driver which helps not only the environment , but also results in efficient use of the toner .Clearly for its price , it does give you a pretty good performance overall compared to other printers in the market with similar price range.

Specifications & Comparison with other Laser Printers

Now a lot of you may have already own a printer – chances are it is an Inkjet printer. Inkjet printers are cheap and these days it is common to see that Inkjet printers are bundled together with scanners (thus making it as All-In-One device). Inkjet excels because its an all-rounder – you could print in colour , you could print documents. However there are few disadvantages to Inkjet printers. Firstly , Inkjet printers take a longer time to print documents as opposed to laser printers (lower-end inkjet printers could do around 12 pages per minute). Plus the costs of cartridges can be overwhelming especially if you print documents often.

Now on the other hand laser printers do have faster print times compared to standard Inkjet printers and ongoing costs of laser is printer is generally cheaper. On top of that laser printers do have their own memory and processor compared to Inkjet printer. The reason being laser printers need to hold an entire image of each page in memory before printing. This is because once it feeds in a sheet, it is committed to sending that paper through at a set speed (if it stopped to wait for data, the temperature of the toner unit would burn the page) as opposed to Inkjet whereby Inkjet printers whereby data is fed line by line from the computer to the printer.

Of course each of the ink technology do have their pros and cons. However for printing black and white pages , laser printer still do have an upper hand compared to Inkjet printers because of the costs in the long run

Initial Impression

Lets take a look what do you get inside the box. Basically you get the printer , USB cable and power adapter , manual and installation disc.

The complete package - (Printer , USB Cables , Power Cable (Malaysia) , Power Cable (USA) , Installation CD) - Mac Mini is not included

Upon a closer look of the toner , you notice that there is warning label that it can get very hot. It pretty much explains the point above which I’ve stated on Laser Printers. That’s why you need to have a memory and a processor for a laser printer compared to Inkjet printer

Yikes - Don't Touch Em . This sums up the reason why you need a processor and memory for a laser printer such as SAMSUNG ML-2160

The printer itself is small and it just fits about anywhere. For comparison purposes I am comparing it to my current Canon MP500 All In One Printer. Just take a look at the size of this SAMSUNG printer. Its small and it fits just about anywhere as opposed to my current printer

Just compare these two printers - The MP500 is pretty huge printer compared to SAMSUNG ML-2160. Think of the SAMSUNG ML-210 as a Mini or SMART for 2.

Another shot would pretty much explain this. The printer only takes up 1/4th of my previous printer space which is neat for students who are renting a place or with limited space and those who don’t have any place the printer. I can safely say that you can place the printer , your notebook and still have a place to study

The side comparison between MP500 and SAMSUNG ML-2160

A closer look…

I have created a video which pretty much gives you an overall picture of this printer

I would like to say that its not a sponsored post by Samsung but more towards the printer itself.

MacOS X Lion has lots of great features and it somewhat makes MacOS X as close as iOS (this is what Apple is trying to do) . One thing which I hated in OSX was its resume functionality , like how application and system resumes when you shut it off or restart it. Of course you have the option of turning it off every time you reboot/restart , but you’ll have to untick it and reboot for a clean reboot , else it would load up all the applications that you had previously and this would have an impact on boot time (unless of course you are using SSD).

I’ve found this great guide in MacOS X hints which describes how to do it , but unfortunately , it was not clearly explained as I would prefer to explain on what these commands do as you could understand them and improve your UNIX skills.

I’ve divided into two parts , one is to disable application resume and the other one is to disable system wide resume (aka resume-on-reboot)

Disabling Saved Application States
We’ll be disabling application save states , which means when you relaunch Safari for instance , your online banking stuff does not show up nor all your previously opened tab. Some may argue its useful but however others may do this for performance and security reasons

1. Fire up Terminal

2. Type this command

sudo rm -r ~/Library/Saved\ Application\ State/*

What this command does is basically to remove application states which are stored in the directory , to delete old states

3. sudo chmod -R a-w ~/Library/Saved\ Application\ State/*

This command makes the folder Read-Only , so that it can’be written by the system nor you. So applications can’t store its saved state.

If you would like to undo it , simply change it to a+w. Now if you are looking for a simpler solution with Graphical User interface without getting your hands dirty , RestoreMeNot is a great application that does exactly this but with a graphical user interface. Now you know the science behind this !

Disabling Reopen Windows when I log back in

This is another annoying thing that I find with lion. Its nice to have everything that you left reopened them back for you when you login back , but some of us would prefer a clean reboot. The reason why we may reboot is because we just want to reclaim our memory or we can’t force quit the program thus forcing us to do a reboot and now imagine if the application gets loaded back again. The folks over at OSXDaily , did make a script which does it for you. So head over there and grab the script , its a simple command , just copy and paste it and basically the script would set the permissions and everything up for you. Now if you prefer to do it by hand you may do so with the following commands and their explanation as well

1. Type this out in Terminal

defaults write com.apple.loginwindow TALLogoutSavesState -bool false

Defaults command is used to save states , its commonly used to mess with OSX Internals. In this case it writes to LoginWindow (the application that is in charge of GUI and Finder) to disable save states.

2. Next type this out

     sudo chmod a-w ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

Much like the previous command it simply means that as read-only so that the settings does not get overwritten , by default OSX turns them out. This should turn them off

3. However OSX is pretty smart , it will automagically reclaim ownership and you’ll have to stop it

sudo chown root ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

It simply means ownership is held by root instead of you , which means OSX can’t change its settings , thus making it as read-only.

Of course if you would like to undo the settings , simply work backwards. Change ownership back to your name , change chmod a+w and set the defaults back to true. Isn’t that simple ?

If you have a software or any other ways of doing it , feel free to share and drop a comment

The Internet grows very fast just like how houses are built everyday to cater the masses. This is because with the introduction of smartphones , the growth of Internet went up high. As for developing country , affordable broadband connectivity translates to more and more people are hoping online. Of course just like in real world , you’ll eventually run out of land and it goes the same for the virtual world – eventually you’ll run out of IP Addresses which means it would be impossible for new devices to hop on and join the World Wide Web.

More after the jump

Introduction

This is where IPV6 comes in. IPV4 has a limitation of 4.3 bilion addresses whereas IPV6 allows up to 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 IP Addresses. Plus IPV6 allows each PC in your household to have its own IP address in the world , which is great (there is no need of port forwarding) . There are tons of other added advantage as well which I would love to describe in detail but it gets a little bit too tech. If you would like to learn what’s new about IPV6 – I suggest to read here

The Next-Generation IP (Picture Source : WIkipedia)

There are many reasons why someone would want to try IPV6 before its deployed by your Internet Service Provider (although there are some Internet Service Providers which have started deploying IPV6 for their customers). One of the main reasons is because of curiosity and this awesome dancing turtle that you can only get to see with IPV6 . I’ve written this guide to get you start-up on IPV6. This guide is written for home users , I’ll be posting a modified script which I use to turn my ubuntu server into a IPV6 router.

Getting IPV6

To get IPV6 (provided that your ISP does not provide IPV6) , you need to register with a tunnel broker. What a tunnel broker does is that it acts a middle man between IPV4 to IPV6. You basically connect to the tunnel broker via IPV4 and in return it gives you the gateway to IPV6 (Bear in mind this is the definition that I came up with , it might not be accurate but it gives you a rough idea). There are many tunnel providers - Hurricane Electric , SIXXS , go6 (these are some major providers). But for this purpose of the tutorial , I would be using Hurricane Electric. The reason why I picked them is mainly because of their servers in Singapore and in Hong Kong – which simply means better latency for Malaysians and those are residing in South East Asia . They do have servers in Europe and in the US too. Pretty much they cover the whole world.

HE Website - Simply click Tunnel Broker to get started

Signing up with Hurricane Electric is pretty straight forward , go to TunnelBroker . Sign up and its pretty straight forward. After you have signed up , you’ll have to create a regular tunnel which you can do by clicking here or clicking Create a Regular Tunnel under User Functions.

Afterwards , bam its done. You’ve done. Now the tricky part is configuring it

Configuring IPV6

Its pretty straight forward if you have a static IP. If you don’t , it becomes a bit of cumbersome to update the IP every time. Thankfully there are scripts for it !

Windows 7/Vista/2008

Its pretty straight forward , all you have to do is go to example configurations , select Windows Vista 2008/7 from Example Configuration and copy them to command window and basically you have IPV6 up and running.

Just a few thing to note is that if you are behind a router replace

netsh interface ipv6 add v6v4tunnel IP6Tunnel <your public ip> 216.218.221.6

with

netsh interface ipv6 add v6v4tunnel IP6Tunnel <your private ip> 216.218.221.6

such as 192.168.1.x or 10.0.x

MacOS X

You could do it by copy and pasting it to terminal just like above for Windows. Alternatively is this script which will automatically create a tunnel for you for dynamic IP , even if your IP changes , this script will pretty much handle everything for you. - Philip did a superb job in creating this script. Have a look at it over here

So basically , you’ll be copying and pasting the script to TextEdit (or TextMate) & modify it (i.e fill it with your IPV6 details)

Save it as ipv6.sh (or something)

Fire it up in Terminal and type sudo chmod +x and then drag and drop ipv6.sh to terminal and hit enter/return

Enter your password

Once that is done simply drag and drop the file to terminal window and hit enter !

Linux

Now this is a bit tricky , there are many flavours of Linux and each varies slightly with one another on how things are being done. For this purpose , I’ve modified Philip’s script (yes he made one for ubuntu) and added some tweaks to it. It’s pretty much like his OSX tunnel connector but with a slight modification – it updates IP automatically for me , it gives a static IP address to my ethernet that allows me to transform it into a router via radvd (which I’ll write about it another day)

This is my modified script which is based on the original script which I’ve added a few things. All you have to do is replace the values , make it as executable. I’ve only tested this with ubuntu server 11.04 , and it should work with debian-based distros.

Testing IPV6

Its simply , just visit www.kame.net , if you see a dancing turtle – pretty much you are on IPV6. Alternatively there are few IPV6 only sites – for instance you could try Google IPV6 at http://ipv6.google.com . By default your browser would prefer IPV6 site over IPV4 if any.

Conclusion

Its good to hop into IPV6 and explore what it has to offer and get ahead before IPV6 is deployed to the masses . I do hope that ISPs around the world would start deploying IPV6 for their customers. It would make the switch much much more easier. As usual , if you have any questions, feel free to post a comment. In my next review , I’ll see how some applications that can take advantage of IPV6 to offer you better connectivity (hint hint : peer to peer and gaming)

DISCLAIMER – I am not paid by YTL/Yes to write this review. It is my honest feedback and my experience

My Australian journey was fantastic and people in Australia are truly awesome , but at the same time there are technology revolution that helped me stay in touch with my family and friends back home in my country – Yes Life comes into play. (more after the jump)

Introduction
Yes Life is an application for iPhone and Android that transforms your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and your Android device into a phone. You get a Malaysian phone number (ideal for Malaysians who are going overseas for a long period of time and ideal for foreigners who come to Malaysia – it works both ways) and its SIM-less (meaning that you don’t need a SIM card and you can carry the number across ‘devices’) – which was ideal in my case. I could pop in an Australian SIM (which I did , and subscribed for a data plan) and loaded up this program. I would make calls using this program , it would use up my data quota and not my voice minutes. Just think of it as Skype.

Getting Started

Firstly you’ll have to download Yes Life for iOS , which can be obtained by clicking it (it takes you to App Store) , and as for Android users , you may download it by clicking it here (it takes you to Android Market). The application itself is free , however you need to purchase or activate your Yes Line – which costs RM 50/RM 68 or more depending on which package you have selected.

Using the application

Its straight forward – works similar to how your Android phone.app or iPhone Phone App. You have everything – text messages (SMS) , phone – its there. It pulls all your contact information from your existing contacts , so you woul not have to enter it twice. Apart from that there is nothing much to explain in this area. Its like using your phone.

My Experience

The beauty of is the ability to make cheap calls back home (you are only charged RM 0.09 sen/minute) which is dirt cheap compared to your roaming charges which is around AU$0.80 or AU$1.50 / min (I can’t remember for Optus). Incoming calls to your 018 number is free and the other party has to pay for it. Its even easier for your parents , this is what I did for my OZ Adventure – just gave them my australian number and my 018 number. Its cheaper for them to make calls to 018 number as it would be charged as a local mobile number and on the other hand its free for me , I don’t have to worry about being charged for incoming calls.

However, there were times whereby the call quality was bad . This is due to several factors , one of it is being poor 3G reception and the other one is poor connectivity to Yes 4G network. I had issues even with WiFi (connected to my University’s line which is ~100Mbps). Mainly the issues are similar to what you face when you experience ‘lag’ in games – its just about that. It takes time for your ‘hello’ to be transmitted the other side and the other side would just keep on saying ‘Hello’. On a bright day (i.e when there is no network hiccups or what-so-ever) , it works pretty well. I’ve been on conversation for 40 minutes without disconnection.

As for reloading , you could do it via Website. For some reason it does not show foreign banks (i.e ANZ) on their list , but if you pick maybank and enter your foreign credit/debit card it works well as well. They should have an option for foreign/overseas Credit/Debit card !

Conclusion

I would recommend to Malaysian students who are planning to study overseas or plan to attend an exchange program with a university. You could save a ton of money on call rate especially if you are going to a country whereby the mobile service provider charges you for incoming calls as well. Secondly , its suitable for businessman who would regularly visit Malaysia and plan to establish contacts – its your Malaysian number – cheaper than your average prepaid and you can use it once you are back on your home country.

I do not recommend for short-trips or your European adventure trip. It is just not worth for that purposes.

To conclude , Yes Life pretty much fills where Skype lacks for Malaysian. I do hope they start improving the application – especially by adding push notification. The battery drain on Yes Life application is horrible and pretty much after a day’s use my battery dies. With push notifications , at least I would be notified if there were any miss calls or incoming SMS.
