ECDPM’s Andrew Sherriff chooses to focus on what the creation of the EEAS has meant for EU-Africa relations, and presents his analysis on the Talking Points blog. He points out that while a week may be a “long time in politics”, a year is a short time to set up a functioning EU diplomatic service. Key questions for assessing the EEAS’ performance in relation to Africa are: has the EEAS helped to upgrade the political dialogue between the EU and Africa, and increased the coherence of EU policies, while also furthering development commitment? Sherriff notes that since Africa is one continent where the EU remains a major player – for the time being at least – there are significant opportunities for the EEAS.
