The good times continued to roll over the weekend as the LWPS ushered in its 4th Season and Sweet Sixteenth installment. As always, proceedings were all about good cheer, making new friends, catching up with old one, talking hand histories, talking plays, sharing the latest community gossip... Oh and some poker was played too! Read on for all the intense final table action, as well as the full results!

Main Event

The charge for the title began in earnest with the forming of the LWPS XVI final table. Leading the assault were perennial deep-runners 'Dangerous' Daniel Chua and Neo Zhi Han, the latter the overnight chip-leader by some distance. Also making another final table appearance was Tan Chow Lin, who's made some serious in-roads in the game in a relatively short space of time.

First to fall at the final hurdle was Lester Pinto, who had to battle heaven and earth on Day 2 simply to stay in the hunt. Seemingly forever short-stacked, Lester hung in there sufficiently to get himself in contention, before running pocket 5s into Neo Zhi Han's AK. Tan Chow Lin was next to go, when got his hand caught in the cookie jar after his steal attempt from late position got snapped off by a big pair.

The unstoppable freight train that was Neo Zhi Han was coasting, before two dramatic hands completely redefined the dynamics of the final table. Ho Bao Qiang raised from the cut-off, only to be 3-bet by Zhi Han. Bao Qiang made the call, and open shoved on a J88 board. Zhi Han snap-called, turning over KK for a big lead over Bao Qiang's AT. An Ace on the turn however, sent Bao Qiang and his railbirds wild. The river blanked out for both players, giving Bao Qiang a massive double through, while leaving Zhi Han short-stacked. Barely several hands later, Iranian native Kian Vatani moved all-in to an initial raise from Mohd. Dasreen. Zhi Han, in later position, quickly moved the rest of his chips in too. More than covering both players, Dasreen would make the call and give himself to opportunity of busting two players. Zhi Han looked in great shape when the T97 board landed, giving him top-set and his opponents very few outs. The turn however, brought a Q, giving Mohd. Dasreen's KJ an improbable straight. The river card failed to pair the board, and the tournament lost both Kian and Zhi Han at once.

Mohd. Dasreen, in his first LWPS final-table, sensed a momentum shift and did his utmost to capitalise. He certainly rode the Zeitgeist for a bit, picking 6 hands in a row and wresting the chip lead from Ho Bao Qiang in the process. He was finally stopped by Dutchman Peter de Groot, who, to the relief of everyone else, prevented Das from making it 7 on the trot.

The escalating blinds were beginning to exert pressure the remaining short stacks at the table, and Daniel Chua made the move first, looking for some cheap blinds, if not a timely double through. Unfortunately, Mohd. Dasreen had As7s in addition to a ton of chips, while Ho Bao Qiang had found two ladies in the hole, and was not about to opt out with them. Once the dust had settled on the three-way confrontation, the tournament had lost Daniel Chua in 5th, and Bao Qiang had assumed a massive chip-lead into 4-handed play.

Now it was time for Peter de Groot and Bosco Cheung to jump into the mix. Both had been astutely keeping out of harm's way while the big stacks had gone at it, and were now reaping the rewards of having the fourth place purse sewn up at the minimum. Now, they knew they had to chip up to make a serious run for the big prize. With very little by way of chips separating them, everything went into the middle in an all-in preflop contest, with Bosco's 88 besting Peter's 55. A very credible run from the affable Dutchman in his maiden LWPS outing.

If experience is anything to go by in this game, then Bosco Cheung would certainly have been the favourite moving into 3-handed play. One of the earliest adopters of the game in the region with more than a decade of playing history, he may have been out-chipped, but was certainly by no means overwhelmed. As 3-handed play progressed, it seemed a matter of time before his mileage would assert itself. As it turned out, it wasn't to be. Bosco's attempted trap with AA turned to tragedy when he and Bao Qiang got the lot in on a river that brought the latter a full house. Bosco bags 3rd spot, and walks away with a nice bit of dosh for his troubles.

The 3-1 chip advantage Bao Qiang held quickly turned 4-1 after the first few hands of heads-up play. Now struggling to keep his chips above water, Mohd. Dasreen made his stand with AJ in an all-in preflop showdown, with Bao Qiang turning over T9. The rail erupted when the board brought a 9, with Mohd. Dasreen drawing to six outs. With neither the turn nor the river delivering any lifelines for him, he was eliminated in 2nd spot, crowning Ho Bao Qiang the newest champion of the Leisure World Poker Series Main Event.

Season 3 of the Leisure World Poker Series came to a conclusion last weekend, and what a season it's been. Record prize pools have been set, record attendances have come, and new champions have conquered. The weekend was no different, with many a player making his/her maiden voyage to the LWPS. As it was with LWPS XIV, it was the young blood who asserted their dominance of all events.

Main Event

After the agony of the final table bubble, the floodgates opened with most of the shorter stacks trying to chip up for a serious run at the Championship. First to depart the final table was the field's sole female survivor Michelle Ang, after an excellent run saw her make the FT on her first LWPS outing. Next to fall was overnight chip leader Chong Ee Woon, who found the going less forgiving in Day 2, as well as LWPS veteran Jerry Lai, who was unable to recover after a big all-in preflop hand went an opponent's way.

6-handed play edged along cautiously for an extended period, before a sudden burst of drama. Deric Lee moved his lot in pre-flop from the button with KT, and was dismayed to find not one but two callers. Donn Chia in the small blind had no problems moving in the rest of his chips from the small blind with AK, while Patrick Poh in the big blind, who had them both covered, obliged with AQ. Donn's AK held, and he picked up a massive triple through. With the board bricked out for Deric's KT, Patrick would pick up the side pot with AQ, eliminating Deric in the process.

Also sent to the rails shortly after was Malaysian Henry Wong, who'd, through the tournament, seen his stack size swing more violently then most. With action folded around to him in the small blind, he moved the lot in with K9, only for Edmund Lau to make the call with KT. Neither player connected with the low board, and Henry was out in 5th.

Patrick Poh, who was sitting pretty until the massive 3-way all-in earlier, tried to pick up some (sizeable) blinds and antes when he found the action folded to him in the small blind. After a brief survey of his chips, Aaron Lam in the big blind decided he had sufficient, making the call with QT, which outran Patrick's 34 without undue difficulty. Patrick. who'd played some pretty solid poker thoughout, departed in 4th, a good chunk of change for the better.

The vastly experienced Aaron Lam, finding himself the chip leader 3-handed, made a concerted attempt to pressurise his opponent with increased aggression. The strategem was paying dividends, until he found himself on the wrong end of a pre-flop all-in, his 44 coming in 2nd best to Donn Chia's AK. The tide was duly turning when Aaron was further forced to fold when two more pre-flop raises were snapped off by his opponents' reshoves. In the end, it was Edmund Lau who delivered the killer blow. With Donn having folded the button, Aaron moved all-in from the small blind, and Edmund made a quick call with A3. An Ace on the board put paid the Aaron's run, and he'd exit in 3rd, good for $3,500.

The commencement of heads-up play saw Edmund hold a decent chip advantage, which was promptly threatened when his 2h 5h all-in pre-flop was called by Donn, who tabled Q7. The 6d Jd 8h board was good news for Donn, who'd have pole position wiith a massive double up. As the poker gods would have it however, the Ah turn and 9h river brought Edmund an implausible backdoor flush, the champion's purse of $9,000, in addition to the coveted LWPS XV championship trophy!
The 14th installment of the Leisure World Poker Series flew by this weekend amidst a flurry of absorbing competition, high-octane action, and unceasing drama. In spite of the increased Main Event buy-in, the Series managed to record its second $10,000 first place prize. The LWPS has already posted record participation numbers and prize pools in its 3rd Season, which augurs well for the development of this poker community, and is testament to the sustained growth of poker in the region.

The weekend was marked by the influx of new faces at the LWPS. While these were faces new to the scene, they certainly weren’t new to poker. The wave of young, online bred phenoms made their presence felt this weekend, as they proceeded to dominate almost every event with their sound fundamentals, control, and reflexive knowledge of odds and sizing.

Main Event

27 runners took their seats for day 2 of the Main Event, led resoundingly by overnight chip leader Jonathan Lau, who'd managed over the course of the previous day to amass 150,000 chips; a boggling 60,000 more than his closest pursuer. Also still in the hunt was defending champion Richard Lim, who was looking to bag a historic trifecta of ME titles, along with Neo Zhi Han and Dhanesh Chainani, who were both looking to bag their first.

A flurry of eliminations marked the first few levels, before screeching to a near halt with the approach of the money bubble. Chris Chong in particular found himself on a knife’s edge when his AK lost a massive flip to Lee Kwang China’s QQ, right on the money bubble. With next to no chips remaining and automatically all-in on the next hand in the big blind, Chris miraculously managed to triple through, at the exact moment that Gabriel Tan broke the bubble on the adjacent table in equally dramatic fashion, to the relief of the remaining thirteen players.

With players now safely in the money, the floodgates opened with many of the shorter stacks looking to chip up for a final table run. In rapid succession, the tournament lost Chris Chong, Chew Ern Boon, Keith Seah, and Neo Zhi Han to the rails, assembling an almost complete line-up of LWPS Main Event final table first-timers.

Jonathan Lau, who’d crushed his Day 1 flight by some margin, was unable to muster any momentum in the tournament’s later stages, and after coming in second best over several pots, was eventually eliminated in 9th spot. He was soon joined at the rail by Chua Zee Wei and Tan Chow Lin, the latter having spent most of Day 2 deftly maneuvering a short stack. In addition to his strong ME finish, Chow Lin would also go on to bag the runner up spot in the inaugural LWPS Heads-Up Challenge.

A dominant chip lead was established several hands later, and in dramatic fashion. Ong Ee How limped from UTG, only to find defending champion Richard Lim moving all his chips in the middle from late position. Gary Yow, one of the shortest stacks, made the call for his stack in the SB. Ee How would tank for several minutes, and, realizing he had both players covered, made the call with AK. A King on the flop and bricks on the turn and river bested Richard’s A2 and Gary’s 77, and both players were duly eliminated, giving Ee How a commanding chip advantage moving into 4-handed play.

Next to depart was Julien Muel, who’d been nursing a short stack since the bubble burst. The Frenchman, attending his first LWPS, was eventually forced to make a stand in lieu of the escalating blinds, and was unceremoniously dispatched by Ong Ee How in 4th place for $3,000. What followed was an extensive 3-handed battle that lasted several levels, with Ong Ee How and Lee Kwang Chian trading the chip lead back and forth. After being unable to make much headway, the excellent Wong Wai Loon was sent to the rail in a 3-way all-in that pitted his KQ against the KJ of Ee How and 99 of Kwang Chian. A nine on the flop sealed the hand for Kwang Chian, and had both opponents drawing dead on the turn. Wai Loon would pocket $3,900 for his 3rd place finish.

The heads-up battle was brief and dramatic. With Ee How still holding a slender chip advantage, both players got the lot in pre-flop. When the cards were placed on their backs, it was off to the races with Ee How’s AQ up against Kwang Chian’s 33. With neither player connecting with the board, Kwang Chian established an insuperable 15-1 chip lead. Two hands later, it was done and dusted when Kwang Chian’s KQ outran Ee How’s A6 for the championship. Ee How heads home to Malaysia with $6,300 extra for his troubles, while Kwang Chian commemorates a truly remarkable weekend with the winner’s purse of $10,000, in addition to the coveted LWPS Main Event trophy.
