On just another misty windswept day on the mountain that Uncle Lim built, 320 poker players were doing battle within the walls of Genting Highlands Casino, duking it out for the lion’s share of the RM$160,000 guaranteed prize pool. Whether it’s the cool mountainous breeze, the plush greenery or high altitudes, there’s something about this quarterly event that seems to spur Kakis on to their competitive best.

Kaki representation at the final table of these events has always been strong, with crowd favourite ‘Uncle Bob’ Bobby Cheong (afternoon) taking down the inaugural edition of this event. The community carried the strong tradition forward this weekend, with no less than 4 kakis cracking the elusive final table, scoring themselves some very pleasant bling in the process.

Making his umpteenth final table this year was (that’s right folks, it’s that man again) Ricky Foo (rickyfoo), who, when not staring down trembling opponents at final tables, carves out a very successful living as a financial services advisor. Ricky was eliminated in 7th place when he got AQ all-in pre-flop, bricking out unfortunately against the lone caller’s 99. Surely a leading contender for Pokerkaki Player of the Year (if we actually had such a competition), Ricky adds the tidy amount of RM$7,000 to the ole’ bankroll.

Making his 2nd Genting Final Table appearance was Vinson See (slkia), proving authoritatively that this jovial gent (pun intended) possesses the game beneath the geniality and infectious laughter. Vinson got his short stack in the middle in late position, and found his K5 up against A7. A fighting chance seemed on the cards when the flop brought a 5, but a 7 on the turn and an Ace on the river meant Vinson would be packing his suitcase in 4th place, albeit a suitcase now RM$12,000 heavier.

Flying the Kaki flag when 3-handed play commenced was the understated and extremely publicity shy Chris Ow (DM101), who asked that his picture receive the mosaic treatment for this article. We at Pokerkaki.com have declined in the interests of journalistic integrity, in addition to a complete ignorance of Adobe Photoshop. By no means a stranger to final tables, Chris won the elusive Pokerstars USD$25,000 Freeroll package to the EPT Grand Finale in Monte Carlo not so long ago, quietly picking up some small and not so small cashes in various Pokerstars tournaments in between.

Chris got to heads-up play at a considerable chip disadvantage, before out-flopping his opponent twice to get back to even stacks. With his adversary out-chipping him slightly, he faced an all-in on the final hand of the tournament. Chris snapped called with 99, and was in decent shape against Q10. The flop came 9 A J, the turn brought a 2, with the river delivering the knockout K, sealing runner-up spot for Chris. Chris trousers the consolation purse of RM$22,000 for his 2nd place finish.

Pokerkaki.com congratulates all winners, and we look forward to delivering more good news soon as the Kaki contingent makes its way to Cebu for the APPT!
Hot off the presses:

On yet another day of fantastic poker action across the region, congratulations are in order to the kakis who’ve done us proud live and online.

In the Genting Highlands Texas Hold’em tournament that concluded only hours ago, Pokerkaki stalwarts Ricky Foo (rickyfoo) and Chris Wee (Thias) carved their respective ways through a crowded field of 400 participants, with Ricky staking yet another ITM finish at 15th place for RM$1,200. Ricky’s quickly earning himself a reputation in the community with a string of stellar performances. Rumours going around of Ricky’s 60% tournament ITM rate would not be too far from the truth.

Going seven spots better on this occasion was Chris Wee, who, sadly, doesn’t get to travel to tournaments as much as he would like. Chris finished the tournament in a very creditable 8th place, picking up RM$2,500 for his efforts, as well as free entry to the following week’s Premier Texas Hold’em Tournament, also taking place courtesy of the excellent Events and Promotions Team of Genting Highlands.

Last but not least, a big hurrah for the young and promising Noel Koh (Destiny), who beat up a good 178 participants all by himself enroute to winning the Pokerstars APPT Cebu Freeroll! The envy of 177 vanquished participants, Noel picks up a package that covers accommodation, entry to the APPT Cebu Main Event, and spending money, all to the lovely tune of USD$5,000.

Pokerkaki.com congratulates kakis Ricky Foo(aka rickyfoo) and Daniel Chua(aka eRaiser) for doing themselves proud at Event 5 of the recently concluded Macau Cup.

Event 5 defending champion Ricky Foo continued his solid string of Macau Cup performances by bagging 8th spot in a tough field, before running his short stacked A2 all-in preflop into his opponent’s pocket Jacks. For yet another credible run on the felt, Ricky picked up HKD$6,800 for his efforts.

Eliminating him was kaki Daniel Chua, who ploughed through the field with ease before arriving at the final table with the majority of chips in play in his possession. Daniel proceeded to destroy the final table with his massive stack, with the poker gods dealing him and endless array of strong hands. Daniel made short work of his opponent during heads up play, with both players all-in preflop. Daniel’s AA had his unfortunate opponent’s 99 well and truly dominated, and he shipped the Event 5 trophy and the first place purse of a tidy HKD$36,690.

Congratulations to both players, and we’re sure we’ll see both their names in lights again before long.

Given his quiet manner and reluctance for attention, Nathanael Seet is not a name that many would have heard of. There can be little argument however, that he is one of the most successful poker players ever to have emerged out of Singapore, or indeed in Asia. Nathanael started playing poker 4 years ago. After 6 months of learning at the lower stakes, he started winning consistently and never looked back. Nathanael has mown down live games from Australia to Las Vegas on-route to a high stakes bankroll, and has on several occasions dragged massive pots from the likes of Johnny Chan and Joe Hachem. Pokerkaki.com catches up with Nathanael on a break from his globe-trotting sessions.

How long have you been playing poker for, and what’s the journey as a poker pro in Asia been like so far?

I’ve been playing for 4 years. It’s been an endless process of discovery and learning. Years 2-3 were the fearless years where failure or losing were never considerations. I’ve been very active this year, to the point where I’m a little tired of the grind. Just like in any other job, you get burnt out every now and then.

What were the key factors that led to your decision to turn professional?

I haven’t actually. It just happens to be my main and only form of income.

Do you prefer tournaments or cash games?

I am a cash game pro.

Do you prefer playing live or online? Why?

I am a live game pro. My skill sets have been honed for live games and some of these skill sets are irrelevant online. Success online requires certain attributes that I find myself lacking sometimes.

Is it possible to make a living playing in your native country?

Yes but only if you are the best because of the relatively smaller population. You probably have to be in the top 5 to make good money.

Tell us about the most interesting hand you ever played.

There are many interesting hands but here’s one that stayed with me. 10 handed ring game 200-400HKD blinds in Macau. I raise pre-flop in late position with suited connectors. Forgot the exact cards but take it as QhTh. Villain to my left calls and maybe some other people call. Flop comes like 885hh. I make a bet, guy to my left raises, and I call for my draw. Turn blanks out and I check, and the villain fires an unusually small bet about 3/5 pot size. It’s unusually small for his standard because leads out for a larger percentage of the pot size. Therefore I call for my draw again. River blanks out and I check, ready to give up my hand. At this point he fires an unusually large pot-sized bet of about say 40k. I tanked for a bit and thought about the way he played this hand, closely observing his tells. Having decided that he too had come up short on his draw, I put myself all-in for 48k and he folded for 8k more.

Why did you play the hand this way? I’m sure our readers would love to follow the precise thought processes on this.

There are a couple key factors to consider when making a play like this. The first point to note is what the basic/standard way of playing a particular hand the villain adopts. Now I said he made unusually small and then large bets for his playing style. I figured that he might be on some sort of draw as well and bet the turn in hoping to take the pot down and if not he still has outs. On the river his only option is to bluff and I figured correctly that he is the type of person to bluff larger than he would betting for value; coupled with some physical reads I have on him.
I would only make this play if I think my chances of taking the pot down is 80% and above.

What is your favourite place to play in Asia?

Home is where the heart is.

Do you think poker is more a game of skill than chance? Why?

Yes because after 4 years I’m winning on a regular basis. And I’m more than willing to play heads up with a person who believes poker to be all about luck.

What do you think regulators in your country need to know about poker?

Nothing they do not already know. This is Singapore!

What advice do you have for players who want to turn professional?

Don’t.

Ivan Tan is widely regarded as one of the most successful poker players in Singapore. Having burst onto the scene in 2007 when, on holiday with his wife Alison, he entered his name for the APPT Macau Main Event, besting some of the world’s best players enroute to a USD$130,000 cash. He’s enjoyed numerous other cashes on the professional circuit since then, as well as the attention of the international media, earning him the soubriquet ‘The Poster Boy of Singapore Poker’. Today he has a few words with Pokerkaki.com:

How long have you been playing poker for, and what’s the journey as a poker pro in Asia been like so far?

Been playing poker for 6 years, as far as tournaments are concerned I have been consistent and have amassed approx 200kusd in winnings over the last 2 years. In cash games have been consistent all throughout and make a decent living from it.

What were the key factors that led to your decision to turn professional?

Able to achieve financial freedom and allows me to travel the world at my own time and pace.

Do you prefer tournaments or cash games? Why?

Tournaments are generally more taxing on the bankroll and of course rewards are significant better than the cash games, but the element of luck is higher. As for cash games, it’s usually only a matter of time before your opponents make mistakes. So for me I would say the income that can be made in cash games is more consistent.

Do you prefer playing live or online? Why?

Live. The games online are too tough these days. It really takes effort to grind out a small profit. The countless amount of training material available on the internet improving the game makes it much tougher than live.

Is it possible to make a living playing in your native country?

Really depends on what is your financial expectation, of course going around home games will pay more than a regular job. But I personally do not recommend doing so, its just not enough to go around if u got a family.

Tell us about the most interesting hand you ever played.

For me all interesting hands are hands that I have showdown and won, too many mate!

Why did you play the hand this way? I’m sure our readers would love to follow the precise thought processes on this.

Well for every cause there will be a reaction. Taking the trouble to think one step ahead of your opponent will usually result in positive expectation.

What is your favourite place to play in Asia?

Macau for sure! I do well in the tournaments there, and the cash games are so juicy.

Do you think poker is more a game of skill than chance? Why?

Of course skill, its gives better players the opportunity to win without the best hand through bluffing

What do you think regulators in your country need to know about poker?

Poker should be recognized as a sport as like in the US, almost all teenagers in Singapore know the game and have played it. Even ladies have started learning it as well. I feel that the older Chinese games like mahjong are slowly decreasing in popularity

What advice do you have for players who want to turn professional?

Bankroll management is the most important. You should never have more than 3-5% of your bankroll on the table at any one time. Knowing whether you are able to beat the game at the stake level is also important. If you feel outclassed you need the discipline to go down in stakes to an easier game.

Ivan Tan has a chat corner of his own on this forum.
You can check out his latest movement and also feel free to discuss poker with him there.

ISLE OF MAN, UK JULY 22 2009 – PokerStars, the world’s largest online poker site with over 25 million registered players, today announced the schedule of the ‘PokerStars.net APPT Macau Summer Festival of Poker.’ This event marks the start of the hotly-anticipated PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Season 3. With five stops in five months, the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) remains Asia’s largest and richest poker tour in terms of both player participation and prize pools.

The PokerStars.net APPT Macau Festival of Poker takes place August 25-30, 2009 at the luxurious Grand Lisboa Casino, home to the PokerStars Macau Poker Room – the largest poker room in continental Asia. The Festival of Poker will consist of 20 events, including the $40,000 HKD ($5,200 USD) buy-in Main Event and a prestigious ‘High Roller’ event with a buy-in of $88,800 HKD ($11,500 USD). There will be a number of preliminary and side events in a wide range of buy-ins, such as the $4,000 HKD ($500 USD) NLH Knockout Bounty Tournament, the $1,500 HKD ($200 USD) NLH Turbo Shoot-out and a $2,500 HKD ($320 USD) 6-Handed Fixed Limit Hold'em Tournament. See the full schedule below, or visit http://www.appt.com/tournaments/macau/ for more details.

“I’m pleased to see the sport of tournament poker continue to grow in Asia” said Team PokerStars Pro and Poker World Champion Joe Hachem “I played in the first APPT Macau in 2007 when PokerStars planted the seeds of No-Limit Texas Hold’em poker culture in Macau, and it’s been incredible watching that legacy take root and bloom. There are now hundreds of local players, cash games running 24/7 and tournaments available every week at the PokerStars Macau Poker Room. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next World Champion comes from Macau or elsewhere in China.”

In Season 2, The PokerStars.net APPT Macau generated the biggest prize pool recorded for a poker event in Asia, more than $12.6 million HKD ($1.62 million USD). Edward Sabat of the United States bested a record field of 538 players to take the first prize of $3.5 million HKD ($453,851 USD). This year the APPT expects to beat its own records, with more players and a prize pool of more than $15.5 million HKD ($2,000,000 USD).

Jeffrey Haas, President of the PokerStars.net APPT, said: “This season’s APPT is set to be even bigger than Season 2 in terms of both number of participants and prize pools. This has been made possible by continued enthusiasm for the tour right across the region, with amazing levels of participation. As poker culture continues to grow in Asia Pacific and more extraordinary players emerge on the scene, they tell us how excited they are to match their skills against players from around the world to win the prestigious poker title of APPT Champion. We will continue bringing together vast numbers of poker players at many experience levels, giving them the greatest poker experiences, in some incredible places and constantly exceeding their expectations.”

The PokerStars.net APPT will make stops in Seoul, Auckland and Cebu in the Philippines before moving on to Sydney for the Grand Final in December. Increased tournament capacities will enable the forthcoming tour to build on the success of Season 2 which attracted a total 1,772 players and created a total prize pool of $38,736,076.49 HKD ($4,998,268 USD).

Last year, the best poker players from around the globe played at APPT events - including Team PokerStars Pros Joe Hachem, Lee Nelson, Isabelle Mercier, Barry Greenstein, Hevad Khan, Chad Brown and Player of the Year Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, as well as Johnny Chan, John Juanda, Scotty Nguyen, Grant Levy, Men "The Master" Nguyen, Eric Assadourian, Nam Le and Liz Lieu.

Joining the professionals will be a host of players from across Asia Pacific and the rest of the world, many of whom will have won their way to the event via free online tournaments at PokerStars.net. Satellites for APPT Macau are running on PokerStars now.

AsianLogic, owners of the Asian Poker Tour, are delighted to announce an historic first for
poker in Asia. The hotly anticipated Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival, taking place between
12-23 August 2009 at the Galaxy Starworld, will be featured in a groundbreaking Chinese
language poker movie, tipped by many to have a similar impact on the game in the region as
1998 Hollywood film ‘Rounders’ did for the western world.

The movie is provisionally titled ‘Poker King’ and will be directed by famous Chinese language
director Chan Hing-Kai and Janet Chun and produced by Amy Chin and Chan Hing-Kai – it will
tell the story of two bitter poker rivals competing for world championship glory. The cast will be
all-star, featuring A list Chinese languages actors, actresses and pop stars and is set for
cinema release across the region later this year. Amongst those with starring roles in the film
include Louis Koo, Sean Lau Ching –Wan, Stephy Tang, Cherrie In and Josie Ho. There have
been very famous gaming films in the region before, most notably the 1989 Chinese language
classic ‘God of Gambler’s’ starring Chow-Yun-Fat, which spawned dozens of spin-offs, but
‘Poker King’ is set to be the first release that focuses on poker.

Tom Hall, CEO of Asian Logic, owners of the Asian Poker Tour said: “This is a very exciting
project and is sure to provoke even more excitement about The Asian Poker Macau Festival in
August. Players across the region and throughout the world are encouraged to come to the
Starworld and play at the Asian Poker Tour Macau – the movie crew will be needing lots of
extras and even players to take on roles if they choose! Rounders, starring Matt Damon and
Edward Norton, is always highlighted as a key catalyst for the growth of poker in the western
world. ‘Poker King’ has the promise to deliver this and potentially much more. Gross revenue
from poker in Macau is estimated to have risen by 400% in 2008 alone and continues to rise
and with this blockbuster movie the game could become even more popular in a land where
baccarat is king. Think of how many people have seen Rounders and at least quadruple it and
you can only speculate at the kind of impact ‘Poker King’ could have on the game. We’re
delighted to be involved.”

The Asian Poker Tour Macau is a hotbed for the world’s top poker professionals and
negotiations are ongoing about giving the Tour’s sponsored ambassadors ‘The Poker Pack’
significant roles in the film. The Pack includes recent World Series of Poker bracelet winners
JC Tran and Steve Sung, as well as Quinn Do, Nam Le, David ‘Chino’ Rheem and Kwang Soo
Lee. Together, they are amongst the most feared players on the world circuit.

The Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival will run from August 12–23, 2009 at the Galaxy
StarWorld Hotel and Casino in Macau. Last year, the event attracted some of the most
famous names in the game. Poker legend Doyle Brunson was one of those that attended and
said: “I thought Las Vegas was the gambling capital of the world but I was wrong, it feels like
coming home.” The Main Event was won by 20-year-old US hotshot Yevgeniy Timoshenko,
who scooped US$500,000 after emerging triumphant from the star-studded field that featured
players from over 40 countries. Timoshenko has gone on to become one of the hottest talents
in the game after taking down the WPT Championship earlier this year.

This year’s Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival will be bigger and better with 12 days of non-stop
poker action and fun. The buy-in is set at US$4,300 (US$4000+$300). Aside from the Main
Event, the Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival will feature the largest range of side events ever
seen in Asia - guaranteed to make the poker fest even more exciting and appealing to players
at all levels. Organizers and tournament director Matt Savage promise a lengthy and varied
side event schedule that will appeal to all tastes, details of which will be confirmed in the near
future. High-limit games and sit-n-go tables will run throughout the duration of the festival.
The last Asian Poker Tour event was held in the Philippines in January 2009 and was won by
Manila rounder Neil Arce, who scooped US$185,000 for first prize after overcoming a field of
262 players from over 40 countries. The runner-up was the Republic of Korea’s Steve Yea, who
repeated his second place in the Asian Poker Tour Macau 2008.
Like 2008, online qualifiers are also expected to flock to the StarWorld as the Asian Poker Tour
continues to gain support from leading online poker networks hosting satellites to the Main
Event. The Asian Poker Tour is supported by the iPoker Network, Titan Poker, DafaPoker, PKR,
PartyPoker, , 32 Red Poker, Betfriends, Ongame Network, Red Kings, 888, and Bwin. Full
details can be found at http://www.asianpt.com/

In another first for the excellent P & E team of Genting Highlands Sdn Bhd, an open poker tournament available to members of the public was held at the Genting International Showroom, adjacent to the Genting casino. Boasting a guaranteed prize pool of RM$200,000 and a buy in of RM$550, there was bound to be lots of value for any player making the trip. A final turnout of roughly 380 players created a small overlay for the organizers. Judging from the active presence of kakis in the International Room after the tournament however, it looked highly likely that the overlay was covered, and then some.

The tournament stretched over 2 days, with the first day comprising 3 separate flights, concluding once each flight was whittled down to 60 players. Pokerkaki representation was looking good going into day 2, with only a few kakis eliminated from the first day’s proceedings. From the get-go on day 2 however, players began dropping like flies, owing variously to the steep blind structure, short level duration, and general bad play. With no one seeming to ever hold more than a 15 big blind stack, the day 2 field of 180 reached its final table in several hours.

The charge to the final table was led by the affable Vinson ‘slkia’ See, one of the more recognizable faces in the local poker scene. He was closely followed by none other than the extremely popular Erique ‘necrohavoc’ Tan, twice champion of the Battle on the High Seas tournaments. Both players made it to the final six, where a private deal was brokered to divide the remaining prize money equally, leaving the title, the trophy, and bragging rights to play for.

With the deal in place, Vinson exited the tournament in 6th place, with Erique finishing a very respectable 3rd. Both players consequently picked up a very tidy RM$25,000 for their skill, patience and resolve, their successes also in no small amount due to the vociferous efforts of the Pokerkaki railbirds.

On behalf of the community, the Pokerkaki Team congratulates both Erique and Vinson on their fantastic results. Look out for details of the next Genting Highlands Open Tournament, already in the preparatory pipeline.
