How to Enable HTC HD2's WiFi Draft N Support

Wireless Draft N, or IEEE 802.11n-2009, improves network throughput over previous standards, such as 802.11b and 802.11g, with a significant increase in the maximum raw data rate from 54 Mbit/s to a maximum of 600 Mbit/s with the use of four spatial streams at a channel width of 40 MHz. (Source: Wikipedia)

Well, seems like there is an entry hidden in the HTC HD2's Registry that proves that this device supports the latest Draft N Wireless standard. By going to HKLM\Comm\BCMSDDHD1\Parms and changing the value of 11nModeDisable from the default 1 to 0 will activate this support which seems to be disabled by default. And if you need proof, XDA user says: "Have an 802.11N only AP and it can connect to it! Nice!". Yes, nice!

Windows Mobile 6.5 Start Menu as List

Windows Mobile 6.5 has a "honeycomb" like layout for displaying items in the Start Menu as default. While some like it (I know I do), some don't, but we all must agree that the ability to customize the Start Menu is great, whether we talk about three, four or five columns or we make it have a list view.

By installing Awesome Start on a Windows Mobile 6.5 device with WVGA screen resolution, you will change the classic layout of your Start Menu to a list like layout, pretty much like the All Programs in TouchFLO 3D or Sense. It will copy the new cpr layout files (StartMenu_GridScene_480x800.cpr and StartMenu_GridScene_800x480.cpr) and activate them, both support for Portrait and Landscape.

GekoNewCal 3 Makes Adding Appointments Finger Friendly

The default Windows Mobile appointment manager is rather dull and probably requires the use of a stylus for most. The lack of finger friendly support can become an annoyance, especially when trying to set an appointment on the go. Unless you’re running a newer version of TouchFLO 3D, you may have to encounter this outdated screen at some point. While other UIs do a good job of skinning the calendar, they often leave the appointment manager untouched. GekoNewCal may be the answer for users who want a nicer interface that isn’t stylus dependent.

GekoNewCal has been completely rewritten and re-released in the form of version 3.0. It uses a finger friendly layout for setting new appointments and has some graphical appeal too. The app launches quickly and jumps you right into setting up a new appointment. That means no extra menus to navigate just to add a new appointment to your calendar. From this screen, you’re able to set the subject, location, date, time, recurrence schedule, category, and notification alarm.

What’s nice about this application is that it uses a slot machine style kinetic picker for setting appointment dates and times. Also, it’s convenient for setting appointments quickly because you don’t have to set both start and end times. Instead, you simply select the appropriate starting date/time and then a time interval (up to 12 hrs, in 30 min. increments). The downside is that you can't set multi-day appointments. However, you can set repeating (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly) and all day events. There’s also a way to send appointment invitations via SMS, but the contact must have the app installed as well. If the invite is accepted, the appointment information will be added to the addressee's calendar.

GekoNewCal is a great option if the interface you’re using has an awkward appointment tool. It’s also a good choice for those who want a quick and easy way of inputting new appointments without the hassle of multiple, complex menus. Unfortunately, GekoNewCal is not free and will set you back 3.99 €. We would've liked to see it bundled with GekoTask, which is set to release soon, for one low price. Get access to a full 15 day trial of GekoNewCal and read more about it at GekoNewmobile.
Changes in 3.0.3612 (Build 26610):

•	<NEW> New "Geko Style" look and improved ergonomy.
•	<NEW> Completely rewritten to achive the best ease of use.
•	<NEW> New kinetic picker for the selection of date.
•	<NEW> User-definable appointment categories.
•	<NEW> "All-day" event.
•	<NEW> Sending of invitations to meetings via customized SMS.
•	<NEW> Notification of invitation with "Accept", "Decline" and "Temptative" functions.
•	<NEW> Notification to the sender of the destinee's acceptance or refusal of the invitation.
•	<NEW> Automatic scheduling of accepted appointments in destinee's calendar.
•	<NEW> New kinetic list for the selection of destinees.
•	<NEW> Option to vibrate when buttons are pressed.
•	<NEW> Support of different screen resolutions (QVGA, VGA, WVGA in portrait mode) with automatic adjustment.
•	<NEW> Support of new graphical skins.
•	<NEW> New SetConfig program to set options (license code, language, skin, vibration).
•	<UPDATE> New management of event recurrence (none, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly).
•	<UPDATE> Alarm setup starting from 5 minutes to 1 hour before the event.
•	<UPDATE> Multilingual support: menu for the language selection.

HTC HD2 Compass Demo on Video

The HD2 has a digital compass and it works a bit differently than it does on the iPhone. As we see in this video, you can "set destination" to a point on a map. Then, you get a green dot that shows you the direction of your target. As you approach your destination, the application will tell you the display remaining. This function would be especially useful for people in cities that navigate on foot or those that go camping.

After the success of Omniano which allows you to play piano, drums and flute instruments on your mobile device, here comes another music application for Windows Mobile 6.x with G-Sensor and VGA/WVGA screens.

GSoundBox is totally G-Sensor centric, meaning that your device will make sounds based on the movements registered by the motion sensor like shaking and several gestures. The application supports a wide range of sounds which can trigger your inspiration, allowing you to select which ones correspond to different types of movements.

Get Magnifier Text Selection on the HD2

There's a nice default text selection tool included on the HTC HD2, an HTC Sense feature rather than a Windows Mobile one, which we've video demoed recently. It allows you to tap and hold on a text and bring up an adjustable selection box that you can spread to encompass the desired text.

You can further expand both the functionality and the eye candy of this feature by enabling the magnifier. To do that, edit your registry HKLM\Software\HTC\TextSelection\EnableMagnifier and change its value from 0 to 1. You'll get a nice magnified preview of a portion of the text allowing you to select text more easiliy. Wonder why HTC had that disabled out of the box?

ZAGGskin: Invisible Shield with Customized Pictures, Designs

Zagg just unveiled their new product called the ZAGGskin, which offers unparalleled scratch resistance and user customizations. The product is essentially an Invisible Shield that you can customize with a picture or design.

The Invisible Shield has been a highly successful product for the company. The Shield is basically a custom-made scratch and tear resistant clear sticker that you apply to your device and your smartphone can weather scratches and scrapes. Unlike gel or silicon skins, the Invisible Shield allows the user to preserve the design's sleek and slim form factor, replicating as much of the "naked" feel of the device as possible. However, the Shield will not protect against shocks, drops, or high pressure.

The ZAGGskin improves on the Invisible Shield tradition by allowing users to add a favorite picture or embed a custom design to their Invisible Shield.

Mangrove Windows Mobile 6.5.1 Internet Tablet

The Mangrove Windows Mobile tablet takes on a 7-inch display that puts it squarely into the mobile internet devices (MID) category complete with 3G, WiFi, and Windows Mobile 6.5.1 that turns the soft button menus into pictures and icons for easy access! We've previously talked about Windows Mobile 6.5.1 making things a bit more finger-friendly, and Brandon had demoed the leaked ROM on some devices, but it looks like the Mangrove, made by C-motech, may be the first one out the gate to support 6.5.1 natively.

The Mangrove will be powered by a Snapdragon processor and have a WVGA screen. Another wireless standard on board is WiMax, essentially 4G mobile data that is supported by Sprint in the US.

If you're interested, the device will hit the first quarter 2010.

Is the Motorola Motus Headed for AT&T?

The Motorola Motus is an Android handset that is similar to the Moto CLIQ for T-Mobile, except BGR thinks that the Motus is destined for AT&T. It is tri-band 3G with AT&T's bands supported. The MOTO BLUR user interface for social networking is also included with the Motus, something that was missing from the Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless.

Additionally, the Motus will sport a 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus and LED flash, a 3.1-inch touchscreen, WiFi, and Bluetooth. It will be a midrange device and although it looks to be a slider, the device may actually be some sort of unique flip phone according to BGR sources. The hardware keyboard on this one does look spacious.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 Unboxed, User Guide Available

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 is due to release soon on Vodafone UK, but one lucky user has received his early and is posting about his experiences on XDA-developers. Gtrab has provided a multitude of videos, pictures and other materials for those waiting in line for the X1’s successor. He notes that the device comes with a 4GB microSDHC card, microUSB and TV-out cables. Regarding build quality, he feels that it’s more solid than the X1, though it’s thinner and lighter. The quick start guide (PDF) has also been posted for curious onlookers. Live vicariously by watching the unboxing, software demo and video camera sample below. If that's not enough, check out his other impressions and comments about the device on XDA-developers.

Get Four of Five Rows of Icons in (not only) HD2's WM6.5 Start Menu

The default Windows Mobile 6.5 coming on the HTC HD2 sports a three row display type of icons in the Start Menu. There's a small hack that replaces the cpr files in your Device which will edit the display of the Start Menu to four or five columns.

The hack not only adds one or two more columns, but it also resizes the application icons and recenters the text labels below them. It can be used on the HTC HD2 but the hack can be applied to other devices running Windows Mobile 6.5 and having a WVGA display (but if you're on another device or a custom ROM, check the registry for the existence of HKLM\Security\Shell\StartMenu\CustomGridForm = "StartMenuCust").

See attached screenshots and go for the one of you liking. Download and install the chosen one, soft reset your device and you'll have the new Start Menu grid. If you want to revert, uninstalling should get back your stock Start Menu as the original files are ROM files and thus always restored.

Verizon Samsung Omnia II to Finally Launch Dec. 2

The Verizon branded Samsung Omnia II has been missing in action for quite some time. It was rumored to launch in each of the last few months, but here we are in November and it’s still not released. It looks like the wait is finally coming to an end. A tipster has leaked Big Red’s launch package, which mentions that the Windows phone will launch in all channels on December 2. The Omnia II will come with a 5MP camera with flash, 8GB of internal memory, a beautiful 3.7” WVGA AMOLED display, and will be preloaded with Windows Mobile 6.5. It will set you back $199 after mail-in rebate.

How many of you have been waiting for what must feel like an eternity for the Omnia II? Has it been so long that you’ve decided to pass on it? Feel free to rant or cheer in the comments!

Xperia X2 Tilewave/Pixel City Panels Extracted & Running on X1

The unique panels on the Xperia X2 have been extracted and, like the Experiment 13 game, they are now making their rounds on X1 devices. The video below shows the mesmerizing Tilewave panel in action on one user’s X1. He takes us on a tour of the weather, calculator and RSS feed features. You can also clearly see that he has the Pixel City panel loaded (CityNight/Day). The panel manager appears to have been ripped as well. Of course, not everything is working, but it’s causing a lot of excitement over on XDA-developers. If you’re interested, check out the Xperia X2 ROM dump thread for more information. Hopefully, we’ll find out soon if these panels will work on the ported panel system from the other week.

Xperia X2 Experiment 13 Game Ripped

The Xperia X1 came with a great game called Xtrakt, which is still one of the best games available on Windows Mobile. This time, with the Xperia X2, a new puzzle game is bundled. It’s called Experiment 13 and has fantastic gameplay with great graphics.

The wonderful folks at XDA-developers have managed to rip it from a dumped Xperia X2 ROM. It’s available in CAB format for easy installation and is working wonderfully on multiple devices. Grab it on XDA-developers and give it a spin to see if it works on your device. Enjoy!

The goal of the game is to guide the character, Roy Tate, through a number of levels to help him get home. To accomplish this, you must obtain all the energy spheres found on each stage, which will give you access to a portal. You can jump and move around by pressing arrows on the screen. Other on-screen arrows will rotate the screen, so you can reach different areas of the world. Collect all spheres throughout the game and you win!

Note: because this game was intended for the Xperia X2, some features, like the accelerometer option, may not work correctly on some devices. The game is certainly playable though.

End Key Action Screen for HD2

There really aren't any options to configure the hardware buttons of the HTC HD2. It comes stock with only one additional action assigned to the long press of the End key, which will bring up a Quick List allowing you to choose one of four options: Power Off, Lock Device, Set Vibrate and Terminate Data Connection.

Leo Actionscreen is an application that will be hooked to the End key of the HD2 in the same manner, but this time, instead of the four options, it will bring up a screen with 12 action buttons to make your life easier with shortcuts to Email, SMS, MMS, Appointment, Task, Note, Contact, WiFi, Bluetooth, Camera, Soft Reset and Power Off.
T-Mobile Complete: The Gift of Phone for the Holidays

While AT&T and Verizon are battling it out with commercials over "There's a Map for That" rival T-Mobile is going a different route in the USA by offering an easy way to gift cell phones this holiday with the T-Mobile Complete package. Essentially, the "Complete" plan allows you to purchase a phone or smartphone outright--the BlackBerry Curve 8520 is offered as an option for $300--and that purchase price gives the receiver of your gift a month of service included; customers can choose from unlimited plans that start at just $50 per month.

T-Mobile is claiming that its T-Mobile Complete package will offer customers the value of post-paid (or annual contract subscriber) values in the rate plans without the commitment of an annual contract. You'll be getting post-paid rate plan costs on a prepaid plan basically. The firm is also heralding the T-Mobile Complete as the first prepaid BlackBerry plan in the US.
We're hoping that other smartphones get added to the Complete mix, like the higher end BlackBerry Bold 9700, T-Mobile Touch Pro2, the HTC Dash 3G, and Android offerings like the T-Mobile G1 and the myTouch 3G.

TouchFLO 3D 2.1/2.5: Disable Unnecessary 01:02 Clock Flip

TouchFLO 3D 2.1 and Sense 2.5 have a lot of eye candy to go along with the tremendous functionality found within both versions of HTC’s UI. The combination of beauty and execution has undoubtedly been successful. Still, at one point or another, many users have realized that a portion of the gloss is unnecessary. An example of this is evident in the redundant clock flipping animation that occurs when returning to your home screen. Every time you unlock your device, return from the Start menu or do anything that brings you back to your main screen, your clock will cycle through an hour and two minutes (via flip animation) until it displays the correct time.

After the novelty factor wears off, some may prefer to disable this animation. Thankfully, a user on XDA-developers has given us an option by creating a replacement manila file that will disable this feature with relative ease. While it paralyzes the excess shuffling of time, the real-time flip animation will remain intact. If you’re running HTC Sense 2.5, it should be noted that this fix will not conflict with your gorgeous home screen weather animations.

Here’s how to disable it:

-	Download the modified manila file for 2.1 or 2.5
-	Disable TF3D /Sense in Today settings
-	Backup the existing manila file you’re about to replace (same file name as modified file). To do this: navigate to the Windows directory, locate the file and copy it to a different location on your device/storage in case you want to revert back
-	Connect to your device with ActiveSync, unzip and transfer the modified file to your device/storage
-	Using Total Commander, Resco Explorer or another utility that can modify system files, overwrite the original manila file with the modified one
-	Re-enable TF3D in Today settings (may need a soft reset)

Now, when you return Home, the clock will only flip when the time actually changes!

Notes: the feature noted above is found on newer versions of TF3D/Sense. Only proceed with the fix if the home screen flip is present and you want to disable it. Remember to backup the file you’re about to overwrite. That way, you can always revert back if you don’t like the changes.

We've posted about the Flash Light application that now offers support for the new HTC HD2 but now a similar application surfaces with same functionality/

With the limitation that it currently does not support "brightmode", Flash Light has a dual mode of operation: for the LED to remain on whilst your finger is in contact with the screen, just press and hold but if you double tap, the LED will remain on till the next double tap. To exit the application all you need to do is tap near the top edge of the screen.

miniUSB to microUSB Converters

We might see a new trend of slim devices coming with the arrival of the HD2, devices which are slim due to (among others) the migration from miniUSB to microUSB. But what happens if your microUSB cable bundled with your device gets defective?

You can easily buy cheap miniUSB to microUSB adapters online, they go from $1 to $10 on Amazon, depending on the make, model, lenght and so on. You can reuse your old miniUSB cable from that old device and sync your new one. And if it's your charger that gave in, you can use the adaptors for charging too.
