The Benefits of Music Education for Children

Whether you're 9 months old or 90 years old, music is an integral part of our lives. Between commercial jingles on radio and TV, the ringing of our alarm clocks every morning, and even the rhythm of our steps on the pavement, music is all around us. But for some, being surrounded by music is not just an everyday occurrence, but an educational necessity. While music and music education can be beneficial to every age, for children especially music can be a major component in shaping their minds and bodies.

For children still developing their motor skills, music is essential. When we hear music, we're using not just the listening parts of our brains, but also we're using the muscles in our feet and hands to keep the rhythm or tap along to the beat. When playing an instrument, there are multiple overlapping skill sets in use. Playing piano requires using your eyes to read the music and look at the keys in front of you, which then coordinates with your fingers to play the notes. For a child, putting multiple muscle groups or skill sets to use allows them to refine their motor skills in ways that traditional classroom education often cannot. Just like with a sport, music making is exercising and strengthening parts of the body and brain so a child can continue to improve.

Language development is an especially important stage for children aged 2 to 9. According to the Children's Music Workshop, the part of the brain that processes language can be strengthened by musical training. Having a more developed language pattern can also help the brain process music. Thus, as children continue their musical education, their verbal communication will improve, which can help their musical skills improve. Linking familiar songs to important information can also help children retain that information better.

Spatial temporal skills can also see an improvement with music education, according to the Performing Arts Medicine Association at Yale University. These skills can help children visualize when problem solving. This is especially helpful in multistep problems, like in math or science, or when working on the computer. The reason these skills improve more so in children with musical education may come down to a difference in how their brains have grown. A collaborative study between Boston College and Harvard University found that the images of children's brains who studied music showed more developed parts of the brain associated with sound discrimination and fine motor tasks than children who did not participate in music education.

All of these skills can come into play when we look at a child's everyday education. A study from the University of Kansas found that children who come from high quality musical backgrounds scored about 20% better on standardized tests than children whose schools did not have a strong focus on music education. The concentration required to play a musical instrument may have a direct link to the focus a child needs when taking a test. Even if a child attends a school with a superior music program but does not play an instrument themselves, they may benefit from being surrounded by other creative, hardworking children.

While musical education may sound like an all-in-one solution for creating a smarter child, an important distinction should be made. While being musically educated can help a child develop skills and exercise their brains, it does not actually make them "smarter." These skills can help them do better in school, social situations, and their future careers, but ultimately how we measure "smarts" in a child really depends on the child. What music can do is help them be the best individual they can be.

Choosing your perfect instrument is a major task. Whatever you choose defines who you are as a musician, and can set the course for your future music career - or hobby. Whatever you decide, you should make sure you're comfortable with your selection. But how do you know what instrument is the right one for you? Here are some factors to consider when finding the musical instrument that's right for you.

1. The sound: You may already have an instrument in mind that you would like to play. If there's a certain type of instrument that resonates with you personally, perhaps it's time to learn how to play. Maybe the classic sound of a piano calls to you, or maybe the hearty noise of a brass instrument is more your style. You may even consider something like strings if you're a fan of something a little more orchestral. The sounds you already know and love can help guide you on your musical journey.

2. The model: One size doesn't fit all when it comes to specific instruments. You may think a clarinet is just a clarinet, but depending on which brand or model you try, you may find that how the instrument feels is a lot different. Don't be afraid to try more than one brand if you have an instrument in mind but haven't found the right one. Your local music store can help you find the right make and model for you.

3. The level of ease: Some instruments require a little more time and effort to truly master. If you have your heart set on a double-reed instrument like bassoon or oboe, keep in mind that you'll have to spend some time practicing to be rewarded with the gift of sound. Some instruments take more work than others, but if you're interested in a challenge that you can dedicate your time to, definitely look into something higher level.

4. The setup: Whatever instrument you choose, whether you rent or buy, it's your responsibility to take care of it. If you're taking lessons at another location, having something portable may be a good option for you. Consider how an instrument may feel when you're holding it or playing it. If something like a baritone is too big for you, what are some other instruments you can try? If you're playing a reed instrument, make sure to factor in the extra costs of accessories like reeds or swabs.

5. The expert: Sometimes doing your own research isn't quite enough. It's always a good idea to get a second opinion, and choosing an instrument should be no exception. If you have a music teacher or musician friend, they can give you valuable advice on what to look for in choosing an instrument. If you're looking for an upgrade or just want to try something new, having another person to listen in can give you new perspective on what your sound needs.

Taking all of this into account, finding the instrument for you should be a fun and rewarding process. Whether you're new to music making altogether or just want to get out of your comfort zone, the instrument of your choice should be a perfect fit.

For some, school can be a bit of a bore. I, myself, was what you would consider a traditionally "average" student. Stuck to my studies, but didn't necessarily excel in academics to the degree of some of my peers. Where I did find my passion, however, is through the various school music programs I was exposed to from 5th grade band and all throughout my collegiate career. Because of these music programs, students like me were able to excel elsewhere, enhance skills they didn't know they had, and overall become a better, more well-rounded version of themselves. There are a number of reasons why music in our schools plays a pivotal role in childhood growth and beyond; below are just a few examples.

1. Improvement on language and reasoning. Studies have consistently showed us that students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. The left side of the brain is better developed with music, and songs can help to imprint information of young minds.

2. The ultimate sense of achievement. Learning to play pieces of music on a new instrument can often be a daunting and challenging, but overall achievable goal. Students who can master even the tiniest goal in music will develop a sense of pride in their achievements.

3. Success in society. Music is the fabric of our society, and music can shape abilities and character. Students in band or orchestra are less likely to abuse substances over their lifetime. Musical education can greatly contribute to children's intellectual development as well.

4. Emotional development. Students of music can be more emotionally developed, with empathy towards other cultures. They also tend to have higher self-esteem and are better at coping with differing levels of anxiety.

5. Music builds imagination and intellectual curiosity. Introducing music in the early childhood years can help foster a positive attitude towards learning and curiosity. Artistic education develops the whole brain and develops a child's imagination.

6. Music can teach discipline. Kids who learn to play an instrument can learn a valuable lesson in discipline. They will have to set time aside to practice and rise to the challenge of learning with discipline to master playing their instrument.

7. Kids stay engaged in school. An enjoyable subject like music can keep kids interested and engaged in school. Student musicians are likely to stay in school to excel in other subjects.

Music Misconceptions - 5 Myths About the World of Music

Our first thought when we hear the word 'myth' usually revolves around fantastical creatures such as Bigfoot or unicorns. While most of these have been debunked over time, there are still some lingering misconceptions that exist in the music world that we're here to completely quash in just a few paragraphs.

1. People are 'born' with a musical gift. False...sort of. While some individuals can directly attribute their musical talents to their upbringing or familial background in the music world, for the most part, nobody is 'born' with the ability to play an instrument. It's cliché, but true, that YOU can LITERALLY play ANY instrument if you put in the time and effort to diligently practice and perform throughout your years. Even if you get the feeling that you're "not good enough" yet, with a little repetition and dedication, you can master almost anything.

2. Flutes, Clarinets, and other Instruments are "For Girls." Undeniably false. Probably the most untrue and absurd claim (in my opinion) is somehow assigning gender to a musical instrument. Any instrument you have a strong passion and desire to learn should be sought after regardless of what societal stigmas tell us - they're all probably jealous anyway. If you identify has a boy and have a desire to play the flute, go for it, and show the world how talented you are. Make sure to ignore "the haters" along the way and show them just how wrong they were to tell you otherwise.

3. You Don't have Time to Practice. False. No one can deny the drastic shift in society where kids and adults are busier than ever. Between extra-curricular activities, extra jobs, and academics, there's a lot to keep track of in our lives. However, my challenge to all you musicians is to pocket a mere 30 minutes (or more!) per day of dedicated practice time with your instrument. Scales, a lick, a full song for fun, sight-reading; 30 MINUTES. PER DAY. That's all I ask of you. Not only will you feel better about your accomplishments, but you'll begin to see that extra time you spent practicing pay off in future performances and beyond.

4. You Can Only Play One Instrument. False. Granted, for beginners it's almost always best to select one instrument to begin with so that you have a chance to hone in on the music foundations, but once you're at a point in your life where you have an opportunity to explore other musical families, take it and run with it. Playing other instruments comes with benefits; understanding the functionality of a full band, more performance opportunities, and you'll overall become a better musician. To those still in school, we strongly recommend you talk with your director before considering adding other instruments to your repertoire.

5. You'll Never Be as Good as 'x'. False. Rid your mind of those negative thoughts right now. I personally have struggled with these demons over the years with multiple examples in life. The side-by-side comparisons and unprecedented pressures we put on ourselves are our worst enemies.

You didn't get 1st chair? So what? Motivate yourself to strive for that position next year.
Missed that one note during a concert? No biggie. Nobody probably noticed anyway.
Skipped a day of practice? All good. Double-up the next time you pull your instrument for a session.
Someone else got the solo? Totally fine. Ask your director for the next one and prove to them you're absolutely capable.

It's hard, but if you continue to chip away at yourself with no improvement, things will only become more challenging. I encourage you to take a breath, come up with plan to overcome these thoughts, and be the best at what you do.

Tips for Solo & Ensemble: Your Guide to the Ultimate Performance

A festival like no other that occurs only once a year. Schools from various districts gather in a single location to be graded on their performances ranging from band, orchestra, and choir. Students have been preparing for weeks to months for this moment to show their stuff and achieve the highest grade possible. Nervous yet? Don't be. Here's some tips to ensure you have have the ultimate performance.

Don't cram. Much like anything you've ever studied for ever, you find that your brain can only retain so much information in a single sitting. Even if you're confident in your abilities, cramming right before your performance has a potential to result in a poor outcome. Take time to practice those more difficult lines over and over again so you commit it to memory. You'll find that by making time well before your performance will help you to play more confidently.
Perform in front of others. Grab your nearest friend or family member and perform your piece as you would on the day of the festival. Having an audience to play to will help you to settle your nerves, especially if you know those individuals will be attending day-of. You may also ask for any additional peer feedback - you'd be surprised how much you might tweak or improve on. Add-on: We recommend video taping your practices too!

Do a maintenance check. Experiencing technical issues with your instrument during a performance is a detriment and won't allow you to have a successful performance. Make sure all of your "moving parts" are, well, moving before you're ready to give it your all. If they're not, grab the proper lubricants, rosins, etc. to ensure they're in full performance mode.
Don't forget to eat & drink. As humans, we tend to forget the basics of living, like food and water, especially when we're nervous. When you wake up the day of the festival, make sure you're fully hydrated and pack a light snack if you're performing later. Try to stay away from "heavier" foods like pizzas and hot dogs (although they are appetizing). You might feel yourself sick or sluggish. Consuming healthy amounts of both will prevent dehydration or even worse, possible fainting spells.
Practice. This should be painfully obvious, but we'll place it here just in case you forget. Practicing is the best way to ensure that you're prepared for Solo & Ensemble performance day. Have a regiment of practicing your piece x times a day for weeks, if not months, prior to your performance date. Doing so will help to build confidence and even provide a bit of muscle memory.

Is Cold Weather Giving Your Instrument the Blues?

Let's be clear, we're not referring to the 'Blues' genre of music here. Instead, we're referring to the sad feeling your instrument gets when it's exposed to the harsh elements of the cold. This time of the year combined with our geographic location make for some pretty gnarly winters and with that comes blistering winds, heavy snow, low humidity, and below-zero temperatures; all things that can do serious damage to your instrument if it's not taken care of properly.

What happens when we leave our instruments in the cold? Great question! Bad things. Your instrument will very quickly go out of tune, there's a fair amount of bending, cracking, swelling, and warping, and you'll inevitably perform a tad more sluggishly due to the reasons listed above as moving parts become less, well, moveable. So, how do we keep our instruments safe and warm?

Humidifiers are a wonderful solution for wooden instrument players. In fact, we just wrote a blog about the importance of humidification that you can read here. Pairing a humidifier with your wooden instrument will help to prevent any cracking or warping that could otherwise result in hefty repair expenses. Thankfully, these affordable devices come in a variety of sizes and options for most wooden instruments.

Keeping your instrument in its case as soon as you're finished playing it seems like a simple and obvious thing to do, but you'd be surprised how easily we forget. By doing so, you're automatically protecting your weather from unwarranted chilliness and lower humidity. Think of it as a form of "insulation" that keeps out the cold and retains the warmth. Your case will always be your first line of defense against the elements, so always remember to properly store it in your case when you're finished playing! Oh, and don't forget to latch it.

Blowing hot air into your instrument is a "quick fix" and only to be used if you're performing outside (we're looking at you marching band people). In-between songs, if you can, blow hot air into your mouthpiece without making sound to keep your instrument from becoming too cold. This helps to prevent that sluggishness that we talked about early.

Proper lubrication is another one of those "no-brainer" solutions, but we can't stress how incredibly important it is to apply proper greases or oils - inclement weather and temperatures aside. If you find that your instrument is going significantly out of tune due to weather, it's important to apply and re-apply proper lubrication so you're able to get back in tune using proper tuning techniques.

Having a clean cloth handy is much more important when precipitation is added to the mix. If your instrument becomes exposed to the snow, ice, or rain, wipe it as soon as you are able. Leaving cold moisture on your instrument is a sure-fire way to damage your instrument, so do your part and keep your hanky handy if you know you'll be playing outside.

Not only is the weather getting colder, but it's also much drier. Dryness is the enemy of your wood instruments and it's best to combat the fearsome climate with the proper accessories to ensure your instrument stays in great playing condition and remains undamaged. Below is an explanation of what happens to your wooden instrument in dry weather and ways you can prevent it from becoming unplayable.

What happens to a wooden instrument in dry weather? First, let's establish the different between cold and dry. While cold weather in excess isn't great for any instrument, it's an easy remedy to warm it back up - simply by playing it, holding it, or moving it to a warmer area. Dryness is worse and more difficult to control because it removes any moisture in the air that can cause cracks, warping, and more irreparable damage to your wooden instrument. Think of your lips in the cold, dry seasons; they crack, bleed, and it becomes hard to smile - until you apply Chapstick to moisten them. The same thing can be said about wooden instruments especially when it comes to cracking. **DISCLAIMER** DO NOT PUT CHAPSTICK ON YOUR INSTRUMENT.

How do I prevent dry damage to your wood instrument? As humans, it's ~~nearly~~ totally impossible for us to create humidity out of thin air so we rely on specialized accessories to maintain proper humidity levels in the cases of our wood instruments. There are a variety of different products you can purchase that are compact and you can leave in the case with your instruments - we call these humidifiers - and they're great! The cost of a humidifier is fairly affordable, ranging from $10 to $50 (still cheaper than an emergency repair or new instrument). As an alternative, you can leave your instrument in an already humidified room in your home, but the specialized instrument products are less cumbersome and usually fit in the case OR inside the instrument itself.

So, what did we learn? Make sure you're keeping your properly humidified during the dry season to avoid costly and unwarranted repairs. Your wallet and instrument will thank you!

One of the most important components of this frightful October Holiday is wearing a costume; gathering materials from your local Halloween pop-up store or thrift shop to complete your ensemble is thrilling. With only a few days left to decide, what will you be dressing up as? Here's some suggestions for any musician who may be struggling to make a decision on what to wear.

Ludwig Van Beethoven - Recognized for his classical music, this German pianist and composer makes for a great costume option. That powered wig you've been holding onto for such an occasion finally has its time to shine.

A Rental Instrument's Journey

After weeks to months of waiting patiently, the instrument you rented has finally arrived in your possession and is practically begging to be played. You may (or may not) be wondering how it got to the music classroom, at your doorstep, or into your local music provider's storefront. The steps that a rental instrument goes through is an extensive one that requires a lot of logistical planning. Below is an abridged, step-by-step explanation of how an instrument goes from manufacture to a student's hands.

1. Bulk orders are placed by the business that distributes the rental instruments. There are multiple manufactures and suppliers throughout the world that are responsible for the design, creation, and distribution of these instruments. A business retailer generally has an estimate of what instruments to order and how many will be needed for the upcoming rental season and beyond.

2. Once the orders are completed they are then shipped directly the store that ordered them. Stacked pallets delicately organized travel nation-wide to these businesses to ensure a successful drop off. The instruments are unloaded and stored either on-site or in a warehouse awaiting their next step along the journey.

3. Each instrument delivered is carefully inspected by the store's repair technicians and rental services department to ensure quality playability and no unwarranted wear and tear. Following a completed and successful inspection, the instrument is then prepped with all the fixings; Director preferred accessories, helpful resources, contact info and more. They are then tagged with the corresponding serial number and instrument before being placed on a shelf until a customer reserves them. Used instruments begin at this step once they are returned.

4. After a student decides what instrument they wish to play and the parent or guardian fills out any necessary paperwork, the rental instrument that had been resting on the shelf is finally pulled and set aside for in-store pickup or school delivery, depending on the operations of the business it was ordered from. From then on, the instrument is in the student's possession until they decide to purchase or (to much dismay) drop band/orchestra.

5. If a student decides to return their rental instrument for any reason, it goes back into the store's inventory and revisits step #3, repeating the cycle of being inspected, prepped, then placed back onto the shelf as it awaits the next individual that will inevitably play it.

Please note that not all instrument rental business operations function the same way. This is simply an outline to illustrate a rental instrument's journey at the most basic level.

5 Ways to Celebrate Universal Music Day

Universal Music Day is coming soon. Each year on the second Saturday of October, the world celebrates "Universal Music Day." Like other "Universal" Holidays such as Earth Day; Universal Music Day is held to "create awareness for the importance of sound, silence, vibration-known as music." How exactly does one go about celebrating such a holiday? Below are a list of ways you're welcome to try yourself.

1. Play An Instrument! This seems painfully cliché, but we stand by it! Playing an instrument regardless of your experience level is a great way to celebrate Universal Music Day. The best part? You don't even have to know how to play it! Instruments are traditionally defined by anything capable of producing sound. Find a rock, beat it with a stick, BAM! Music. You're a natural.

2. Learn a New Song. Picture this: You're buried in a trove of sheet music and books with near infinite possibilities to choose from. Pluck that one piece you've dreamed of playing but never had the time to because of prior obligations. Along comes Universal Music Day - the perfect excuse to break out your instrument and put that new music to the test! Record yourself, post it, and show the world (or universe) what you've learned and feel good about yourself for your accomplishments

3. Create a Playlist of Your Favorite Songs. There are several websites and mobile application programs to choose from that allow free or paid music streaming. Take the time to assemble some of your favorite tunes and let it rip. Dance alone in your home or take a nice drive with the music you love at full volume. Share your playlist on social media so others can join in, feel inspired, and get a taste of you're feeling through the power of music. In the words of Charles Wright, "Express Yourself."

4. Sit in Silence. Take a moment of your day to appreciate the natural sounds the world provides. The ambient honks of horns, the wind rustling the leaves, the neighbor's dog barking at a stray cat; There's something beautiful about organic sounds that the universe creates for us to observe and listen to. Who knows, you may feel inspired by what you hear (or don't hear).

5. Collaborate with Other Musicians. If there's anything we've learned from being apart for nearly a year and 8 months, it's the power to communicate through alternate mediums, such as the Internet. Put out a beacon to signal other musicians to join in a powerful collaboration. Maybe it's a vocal arrangement that you wrote or a song with 15 guitars all simultaneously strumming to the same song. The technology exists, so don't shy away from it! There's something beautiful about musical minds coming together to celebrate a day about music.

Sheet music stands are arguably one of the most important accessory purchases you'll make during your musical career. They're a pivotal component to any musical performance or practice session because their purpose is simple, yet important: to hold your music. The stand market can seem overwhelming at times and you might be faced with questions regarding portability, structural integrity, and overall durability. Below is a compiled list of some music stands to help you become more acquainted with the stand universe.

The Folding Wire Stand

Easily the most economical stand on the market and arguably the most essential, the folding wire stand is incredibly portable and simple to set up making it very versatile for all playing purposes. They're highly affordable and some even come with a cool carrying case for easier travel. Occasionally, musicians will struggle to fit all of their music on this stand and some aren't necessarily the most durable, but what they lack in structural integrity, they make up for in simplicity and convenience. These stands are great for musicians of any age and experience and are usually what most musicians begin with before possibly upgrading.

The Heavy-Duty Stand

A much more durable option than the folding wire stand, the heavy-duty stand comes with easily adjustable height options, swivel, and stand angle adjustment. These stands are traditionally used in concert settings because of their much more elegant and presentable appearance. They're incredibly sturdy and can hold more sheet music and books than the folding wire stand. Most models are not collapsible making them difficult for travel and can be cumbersome to carry, unless you elect to bring your tools with you everywhere you go. These stands will last for a long time so the investment in a nicer model is almost always worth it. While it might seem tempting, we recommend you not use these as a table.

The Wooden Stand

A professional looking stand that does best in the practice environment or for a solo performance. The wooden stand is a top class vehicle for your music, is incredibly sturdy, and normally comes with an adjustable height feature. There are a variety of designs that accompany this type of stand that ultimately comes down to player preference. While these stands are a gorgeous aesthetic to supplement the player and their performance, they are rather challenging to travel with since they don't really collapse and could potentially break if not stored correctly. If you're looking to invest in a nice stand that doubles as a decorative piece, the wooden stand is the stand for you!

The Ultimate Back to School Music Checklist

A brand new school years is upon us. With 2021 comes a small handful of new challenges, foreign surroundings for our students, and for some students, an entirely new interest and commitment: Band and orchestra! Below is a relatively thorough checklist to help students get started before their first day of music class.

1. Have Your Student Try an Instrument

Depending on the school your student attends, they may have an opportunity to demo an instrument prior to the next school year. This is a wonderfully fun moment for students and helps to build up excitement for beginning music class. There's something special about actually getting the instrument into their hands and having them make a sound. Once your student has chosen their instrument(s), your school's Director will then help you to take the next steps before class begins.

2. Know the School Music Provider You're Renting From

It's highly likely during the instrument trial process, a local music business that works closely with the school will assist with the rental process on-site. Representatives from the business will be present to help students try the instruments and begin the rental contract process prior to your student receiving their instrument. They'll also help with any questions you may have and are another great resource for all your music needs. Friendly reminder that you don't always have to choose that particular business to work with. Talk with the school's Director to see if their are other possible options for you explore just in case.

3. Brace for a Possible Waiting Period

If your student has selected an instrument months before the upcoming school year, there's a chance you won't bring the instrument home right away. In fact, most students will have their instruments delivered to the school for the first day of music class. Even though your student may be eager, it's important that during this time that they do not access the instrument as it could lead to bad habits before class even begins. We suggest asking the Director about summer lesson opportunities to possibly expedite the process.

4. Order Your Director-Preferred Accessories

Traditionally, your school's Director will supply you with a complete list of accessories that will accompany your student's instrument. While your local music provider may already have this list on record, it's always nice to keep it with you just in case. At that point, you're encouraged to order these supplies online or in-store; whichever is most convenient for you. If you're ever unsure of a product or have questions about the list, you can always contact the school's music Director or your local school music provider for further explanation. Having all the accessories you need are crucial for a successful first day of music class.

5. Register for Music Lessons

Signing up for lessons is typically not mandatory (unless your Director says otherwise), but it's a great opportunity for your student to develop/improve their musical skills and stay ahead of the curve outside of music class. Inquire with your school music provider or ask your Director for a list of recommended music educators in your area.

PPE, The Music World, and You

At the beginning of 2020 the world was abruptly launched into a pandemic that over the past year and a half has made its ebbs and flows, reeking havoc on our social and personal lives that we were so regularly accustomed to. In lieu of such an event, individuals were encouraged to utilize specialized gear to help lessen the transmission of viruses, bacteria, and the like: Personalized Protective Equipment, better known as PPE. The music world was also encouraged to make some changes...

What is PPE?

Let's begin with some vocabulary! We did our best to find the absolute best definition that clearly explained what PPE is in the most concise way. Here's what wikipedia has to say: "Personal protective equipment is protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury or infection. The hazards addressed by protective equipment include physical, electrical, heat, chemicals, biohazards, and airborne particulate matter."

In the music world, we're more likely to see specialized masks, disinfectants, and barriers above helmets and goggles. For this article, we're also focusing solely on airborne particulate matter (unless the trombone players decide to light a fire).

What Type of PPE Exists for Musicians?

Thankfully, most of us don't have to wear full hazmat suits to perform at concerts or in a rehearsal, but there are some great products for musicians that may reduce the spread of germs and simultaneously allow them to play/perform.

Bell Covers are placed at the end of most brass instruments and come in a variety of sizes. Traditionally, they are a cloth-like material that snuggly fits around the bell end without altering the intonation of the instrument.
Face Masks come in a variety of fun colors and sizes. Specialized masks for wind players may come equipped with small flaps or extra holes so that the player can effectively perform with little to no alteration. Masks for vocal performers also exist.
Virus Shields are specifically designed for music stands or to isolate single performers. They are typically a transparent material that covers the surface area of the object it is around (and beyond) that may prevent airborne diseases from further spreading.
Disinfectants aren't really new to the music world, but have become a hot commodity in the past year in a half. Typically, these come in small, travel-sized bottles with a fine mist nozzle that help to disinfect brass/woodwind mouthpieces, cases, accessories, etc.

Where Can I Get PPE for Myself or My Student?

The best place to check for any music-related PPE gear, especially if it's absolutely mandatory in your state, is to check with your local music retailer. They have access to the specialized equipment that your music Director and the CDC recommends. Along with the required equipment for students, feel free to inquire about more "fun" masks with music notes, instruments, and the like to show support for you musical student.

Summer has historically been a period of time where individuals young & old have months on end to get outside, go to the beach, watch sports, and enjoy the warmer season with friends and family. 2020 did make these pastimes more of a challenge, but we're looking forward to a brighter outlook in Summer 2021. With a new year and a new hope, there comes even more opportunities and reasons for you or your child to take music lessons this Summer!

Virtual Lesson Opportunities are Still an Option!

The ability to practice and learn in the comfort of your home is available now more than ever with the recent advancements in technology and tele-communications. Most music educators are utilizing an abundance of resources to ensure that students can learn effectively. Offering the chance to gain a quality education while remaining a safe, social distance is a win/win situation for educators, parents, and students! That said, you can also check to see if your local lessons studio has options for in-store learning if you're chomping at the bit to get out of the house.

A Chance to Learn Something New

Summertime is the best time to broaden your musical horizons. What else are you going to do with all that downtime? Pick up a new instrument and sign up for lessons or present that really challenging piece you've always wanted to perform to your instructor in an effort to better prepare yourself for the fall. Experimenting with different, unusual instrumentation will help you to grow both as a musician and an individual.

Keep Your Skills Fresh

Let's be honest - taking even 2 weeks off from practicing puts you at risk of falling behind or forgetting important technical material. Now, imagine not practicing for 3 months! Scary, we know. By enrolling in lessons, you'll be able to maintain your musical disciplines and only improve as a musician. Backtracking is an unfortunate, surefire way to figuratively hit the reset button and could take weeks, if not months to gain back what you've learned and lost.

Zero Pressure

Summer provides both students and parents with a much more flexible, relaxed schedule. Maintaining the more important values and disciplines that come with taking music lessons can still be associated with the care-free excitement that comes with summer vacation. The end result is a happy student that learned, had fun, and is excited to go back to school.

Why Should We Take Music Lessons?

An answer to the question in this title put simply - of course. Now, a music-based blog may be considered biased considering the subject matter, but let's put that aside for just a moment and review the benefits of taking music lessons, regardless of experience.

1. One-On-One Instruction

Group settings take over the majority of our lives, whether we're the student in a classroom among peers or the adult surrounded by other co-workers. Regardless, we typically vie for the time of a single individual in a small increment of time making growth difficult. In a private music lesson setting, the exchange is between you and instructor only. This crucial time is great for asking questions, receiving specific instruction geared towards your learning abilities, and overall improving your skills because of this personal, reoccurring interaction - something you seldom get an opportunity to experience.

2. Increased Self-Expression

Art is deemed as one of the most purest forms of self-expression. Within the realm of arts lies (you guessed it) music! Music lessons are a great catalyst for beginning your self-expression journey. When you take music lessons, you learn, and when you learn, you begin to apply yourself to become more creative. Music is a wonderful platform for self-expression and creation. Taking a multitude of emotions that would otherwise be bottled up are released through your creativity makes for a certain euphoria that's often difficult to express or share through other mediums.

3. Improved Problem-Solving Skills

Per the last point, we now know that music can directly affect the way our brain operates through emotion and creativity, but that's not all! Many studies conducted over the years have confirmed that music "lights up" your entire brain. This increase in brain function directly correlates to the portion of our noggin that's responsible for critical thinking and problem solving skills. Improved studies, alertness, and overall mood can be traced back to the moment we take our first music lesson and beyond.

4. Teaches Discipline

This perk applies more to younger musicians as they begin to learn more about life and themselves. Patience is a virtue when you first begin to learn an instrument, like most things. The proper way to hold a violin, the critical position placement on a trombone, or even the proper way to hold a drumstick to produce the best possible sound are all factors in teaching discipline. These things take time, but students and adults alike who begin to see their improvements feel much more motivated to play and even persevere through life's inevitable adversities.

5. Overall Health Improvement

We tend to neglect our health daily with poorer sleeping/eating habits, lack of physical activity, and even declining mental health through the inevitable stressors of daily life. Luckily, we can turn to music to help reduce the these stress factors and transition to healthier improvements. Reduced blood pressure and anxiety levels are both proven from actively learning and playing music. As individuals get older and become at greater risk for memory loss, music plays a pivotal role in decreasing memory-related diseases; this reinforces the importance that no one is ever too young or old to start learning an instrument through music lessons.

5 Ways Band & Orchestra Parents Can Help Their Student Succeed

As parents, we want nothing more than to help our student succeed in everything they do. Band and orchestra programs are excellent outlets for kids to work at something and see the results! Here are some ways you can help your student as they begin or continue their musical journey.

1. Ensure They Have the Necessary Materials

Before the school year starts, your band or orchestra instructor will distribute a list of materials that your student will need to get started. Method books, cleaning supplies, reeds, rosins, and music stands are items your student will need to be successful. Without these materials, students will find it difficult to succeed at their instrument.

2. Make Practice Time a Priority

Practicing at home will help students improve their skills and retain what they're learning in class. Schedule a time to practice so that it becomes part of your student's daily and weekly routine. Practice doesn't have to be boring! After a few months of playing, students can begin playing out of fun books to supplement their method books.

3. Encourage Their Musical Progress

There may be times when your student feels overwhelmed or discouraged about their musical progress. This frustration is natural, and as parents, it can be hard to see. Continue to encourage them by sitting in on their practice routine, complementing their progress, and helping them to set realistic expectations. Positive feedback will nurture your student's confidence and keep them interested in playing.

4. Signing Them Up For Lessons

Private lessons can be a wonderful way to encourage your student's musical journey even further. Before signing up for lessons, either virtually or in-person, check with your band or orchestra teacher to see if they have any recommendations.

5. Support Your Music Educators and Their Program

A great way to support your student is by supporting their teachers and the school music program. Many school music programs hold fundraisers throughout the year to help pay for new instruments or other materials. By participating in fundraisers, you help strengthen the program your student is a part of. Some schools also have music booster organizations that support the music program in a variety of ways. Last, don’t be afraid to contact your student’s music teacher regarding their progress. If your student is struggling, their teacher can provide advice.

This four-string wonder that rocked the internet via YouTube years ago has been making waves in the music education world; incorporating beginner classes, online/in-person lessons, and a whole uke-load of video tutorials online. If you're someone who likes to experiment with different instruments and try something new this summer, we encourage you to try this "tiny wonder;" and here's why:

So Many Resources

As mentioned above, the ukulele has become a household instrument across the internet and now even in some school programs. The accessibility to learn new chords, songs, and progressions are quite literally at your fingertips. Your local music store is also likely to carry instructional method books and popular music that you might not think to find elsewhere. Additionally, you can find a variety of content creators, like Elise Ecklund, who writes silly songs and also gives great, detailed instructions on Youtube. Seeking out lesson studios in your local community is also a great opportunity to get started and a perfect way to occupy your summer downtime.

Parents, you'll like this one. Ukuleles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, patterns, and most of them won't break the bank. You can traditionally expect to spend somewhere between $40 and $60 on a high-quality beginner ukulele or around $100 for an upgraded ukulele. To the Graduates of 2020 - This one's for you

Congrats, grads of 2020!!

We are so proud of anyone that graduated (whether Kindergarten or college) during this atypical school year, characterized by virtual/remote/e-learning and pandemic safety/apprehension, too.
While it may have been anticlimactic, the accomplishment is, perhaps, extra poignant, in light.
If your traditional cap ‘n gown ceremony with physical diploma and all cheerleaders cheering was forgone, in place of a screen equivalent, it is no less significant. You should all be truly proud.

In addition, any educators and faculty that facilitated this (especially, in light of quick adaptation to technology, for better or worse) should also be applauded. It shows courage & tenacity, even if birthed out of necessity. Challenge is a constant in life & 2020 has proved this to be extra true.

With this in mind, forging a path ahead will still be characterized by adversity but also optimism.
The current state of affairs continues to affirm this. It also shows humanity overcoming adversity.
One day, we will reflect (if we haven’t already) on both the positive and negatives of Coronavirus.

As music advocates, we trust music will be a binding force that brings light, love, healing & hope.
Whether you participated in school music [general music, choir, band, orchestra, fretted, etc.] or otherwise (of course, now is an ideal time to start; it’s enjoyable, enriching, & therapeutic also), now than ever, music is more important. Listen to it. Play it. Support it. All of the above!!!

Regardless, please continue with your musical journey beyond graduation or perhaps start fresh.

Support Your Local (Music) Stores!

Even pre-pandemic, the plight of the local (especially, independent) retailer has become apparent in this model era of digital convenience. Whether it's a giant online retailer or corporate brick 'n mortar chain, competition is fierce and "mom 'n pop" places have struggled for years.

But it doesn't have to be that way (or least, as much, with your help).

Many places that are local can compete more than you think and certainly on customer service with added value components, too. Plus, there is pride in supporting businesses in your community, whether retailers, restaurants, studios, etc. You are helping feed families locally rather than lining CEO/exec. pockets even further.

In addition, you are supporting the art of their craft(s) or trade(s) while allowing them to be around (provided they are ethical & of quality) so you can also benefit from convenience, labor services & actual people. There's something special about seeing/holding/experiencing product. Not to mention, if in-stock, you can take home & enjoy/utilize it sooner.

There are plenty of articles about grassroots revivals to support local (which never get old) and bookstores (yes, music retailers are usually booksellers via print music) that are struggling against online options. Perhaps, the philosophy is just to a) consider local & b) try it (again?). Especially now; it's crucial to support local stores so they stick around. The effects of a pandemic are not kind to the economy but individually, we can each make a micro difference that positively affects the macro. Adaptation to change is required, but some things don't go out of style!

While virtual experiences are likely here to stay, there will always be a need for live lessons, repair services, and a friendly face in the flesh. If you want those places to be around, then support them year-round for what they do. You might even find more added surprises such as price, convenience, and accessibility, than perhaps you previously expected. Plus, stores often ship, which you can't say for all sources out there.

4. Standing in the Shadows of Motown

Another documentary that comes packed with a variety of performances, interviews, and even reenactments to celebrate the more "forgotten" side of mo-town and celebrating the 1960s soul hit-makers, The Funk Brothers. These "brothers" were huge in their own right, but remained anonymous as back-up performers. A celebrated piece of cinema that draws light on the shadows seemingly left aside. Musically Make the Most of Your Time at Home: Suggestions for musicians who are currently indoors

You, a musician, find yourself indoors; completely, physically detached from the outside world and isolated for an uncertain amount of time. You have all the technology in the world at your fingertips, a family member or two to discuss current issues with, and most importantly, you have your instrument. Trying to find ways to keep yourself entertained? Here's a list of to keep you occupied during these times.

- Practice. Right out of the gate, #1, go-to cliche response is to obviously practice your instrument. Make a challenge for yourself to practice 30 minutes a day indoors; something you should be doing anyway. Take that challenge a step further and show everyone what you've been practicing by sharing it on your social media profiles. Now, more than ever, people are communicating through digital mediums constantly. Not practicing can cause you to forget crucial theories, methods, and best practices and that's never good! If you need a break from the fundamentals, pull out some popular music that you've been saving for just the right occasion. - Listen to the Music & Artists you Love. Social media and the Internet is a massive garden of information that's accessible nearly always. If you feel yourself stuck in a rut, take a break from life indoors and escape to your headphones with songs from artists that you enjoy hearing from. By giving yourself the time to do this in small or large increments a day can help to de-stress, motivate, and even inspire a stroke of musical genius.

- Watch Lesson Tutorials. There's a lot of good (and conversely, bad) videos that exist on the Internet. Practicing is important (see above), but even more than that is continuing your music education in order to improve your skills as a musician, regardless of what instrument you play or what vocal range you can achieve with professional assistance. Similar to lesson tutorials (continue to see above), actual one-on-one lessons conducted virtually with music educators is increasingly popular and relatively simple to do if you have the proper equipment such as a microphone, smartphone/tablet/desktop, and the preferred e-communication program. - Create an At-Home Performance. Living in the digital era, we're given a variety of opportunities to e-communicate with nearly anyone in the world. One of the coolest methods of Internet/social media connections is the ability to perform within the comfort of your own home. There's something endearing, seemingly natural and human about watching a celebrity host a performance on Instagram or Twitter to their millions of fans and to that we say, why can't you? Promote yourself by creating a status of when you'll be performing and what you'll be playing/singing. You could even consider sprinkling in some requests or popular covers to really engage your audience. If you're lacking the proper equipment to broadcast your jam session, you can always ask family members to join in on the fun, OR give them the performance of a lifetime featuring YOU!

- Basic Maintenance. Those old strings on your guitar aren't going to replace themselves. Keeping your instrument maintained is a great way to spend quality time indoors. Using proper swabs, lubricants, or replacement parts on your corresponding instrument will keep it playing in tip-top condition. Proper maintenance techniques for specified instrument can be found pretty much anywhere online through a simple search through Google. When was the last time you gave your trombone a bath, huh?

- Play What Makes You Happy. We spend an awful lot of time learning about the fundamentals of music, all of which are still very important, but sometimes, even at home, we need to take the time to breathe and practice or play what we really love. Popular music for most instruments exists through digital download or in physical, paper format. Just watched your favorite movie for the hundredth time and want to learn the main theme on piano? There's probably a score for that. Just beat the final boss of an old-school Super Nintendo game? There's probably a score for that, too! Maybe you're just really obsessed with Billie Eilish and love ALL of her music. There's 100% a whole BOOK for that. The options are nearly endless with what you can play on your instrument - so get out there (but not really) and have some fun with it!
