However, the role of serotonin/dopamine interactions in the behavioral effects of MDMA remains unclear. We previously showed that MDMA-induced locomotion, serotonin and dopamine release are 5-HT&lt;sub&gt;2B&lt;/sub&gt; receptor-dependent. The aim of the present study was to determine the contribution of serotonin and 5-HT&lt;sub&gt;2B&lt;/sub&gt; receptors to the reinforcing properties of MDMA.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;We show here that 5-HT&lt;sub&gt;2B&lt;/sub&gt;&lt;sup&gt;−/−&lt;/sup&gt; mice do not exhibit behavioral sensitization or conditioned place preference following MDMA (10 mg/kg) injections. In addition, MDMA-induced reinstatement of conditioned place preference after extinction and locomotor sensitization development are each abolished by a 5-HT&lt;sub&gt;2B&lt;/sub&gt; receptor antagonist (RS127445) in wild type mice. Accordingly, MDMA-induced dopamine D1 receptor-dependent phosphorylation of extracellular regulated kinase in nucleus accumbens is abolished in mice lacking functional 5-HT&lt;sub&gt;2B&lt;/sub&gt; receptors. Nevertheless, high doses (30 mg/kg) of MDMA induce dopamine-dependent but serotonin and 5-HT&lt;sub&gt;2B&lt;/sub&gt; receptor-independent behavioral effects.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;Postulating that serotonin (5-HT), released from smoking-activated platelets could be involved in smoking-induced vascular modifications, we studied its catabolism in a series of 115 men distributed as current smokers (S), never smokers (NS) and former smokers (FS) who had stopped smoking for a mean of 13 years.&lt;/p&gt;

Methodology/Principal Findings

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;5-HT, monoamine oxidase (MAO-B) activities and amounts were measured in platelets, and 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA)—the 5-HT/MAO catabolite—in plasma samples. Both platelet 5-HT and plasma 5-HIAA levels were correlated with the 10-year cardiovascular Framingham relative risk (&lt;i&gt;P&lt;/i&gt;&amp;lt;0.01), but these correlations became non-significant after adjustment for smoking status, underlining that the determining risk factor among those taken into account in the Framingham risk calculation was smoking. Surprisingly, the platelet 5-HT content was similar in S and NS but lower in FS with a parallel higher plasma level of 5-HIAA in FS. This was unforeseen since MAO-B activity was inhibited during smoking (&lt;i&gt;P&lt;/i&gt;&amp;lt;0.00001). It was, however, consistent with a higher enzyme protein concentration found in S and FS than in NS (&lt;i&gt;P&lt;/i&gt;&amp;lt;0.001). It thus appears that MAO inhibition during smoking was compensated by a higher synthesis. To investigate the persistent increase in MAO-B protein concentration, a study of the methylation of its gene promoter was undertaken in a small supplementary cohort of similar subjects. We found that the methylation frequency of the MAOB gene promoter was markedly lower (&lt;i&gt;P&lt;/i&gt;&amp;lt;0.0001) for S and FS &lt;i&gt;vs.&lt;/i&gt; NS due to cigarette smoke-induced increase of nucleic acid demethylase activity.&lt;/p&gt;

Conclusions/Significance

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;This is one of the first reports that smoking induces an epigenetic modification. A better understanding of the epigenome may help to further elucidate the physiopathology and the development of new therapeutic approaches to tobacco addiction. The results could have a larger impact than cardiovascular damage, considering that MAO-dependent 5-HT catabolism is also involved in addiction, predisposition to cancer, behaviour and mental health.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

Methodology/Principal Findings

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;We used independent component analysis (ICA) to identify and characterize dysfunctional spatiotemporal networks in schizophrenia engaged during the different stages (encoding and recognition) of a Sternberg working memory fMRI paradigm. 37 chronic schizophrenia and 54 healthy age/gender-matched participants performed a modified Sternberg Item Recognition fMRI task. Time series images preprocessed with SPM2 were analyzed using ICA. Schizophrenia patients showed relatively less engagement of several distinct “normal” encoding-related working memory networks compared to controls. These encoding networks comprised 1) left posterior parietal-left dorsal/ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, cingulate, basal ganglia, 2) right posterior parietal, right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and 3) default mode network. In addition, the left fronto-parietal network demonstrated a load-dependent functional response during encoding. Network engagement that differed between groups during recognition comprised the posterior cingulate, cuneus and hippocampus/parahippocampus. As expected, working memory task accuracy differed between groups (&lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;&amp;lt;0.0001) and was associated with degree of network engagement. Functional connectivity within all three encoding-associated functional networks correlated significantly with task accuracy, which further underscores the relevance of abnormal network integration to well-described schizophrenia working memory impairment. No network was significantly associated with task accuracy during the recognition phase.&lt;/p&gt;

Conclusions/Significance

Period effects for substance use have been documented for different classes of legal and illicit substances, with the suspicion that media publicity may have played major roles in their emergence. Previous analyses have drawn primarily from qualitative evidence; the temporal relationship between media reporting volume and adverse health consequences has not been quantified nationally. We set out to explore whether we could find a quantitative relationship between media reports about prescription opioid abuse and overdose mortality associated with these drugs. We assessed whether increases in news media reports occurred before or after increases in overdose deaths.&lt;/p&gt;

Methodology/Principal Findings

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;Our ecological study compared a monthly time series of unintentional poisoning deaths involving short-acting prescription opioid substances, from 1999 to 2005 using multiple cause-of-death data published by the National Center for Health Statistics, to monthly counts of English-language news articles mentioning generic and branded names of prescription opioids obtained from Google News Archives from 1999 to 2005. We estimated the association between media volume and mortality rates by time-lagged regression analyses. There were 24,272 articles and 30,916 deaths involving prescription opioids during the seven-year study period. Nationally, the number of articles mentioning prescription opioids increased dramatically starting in early 2001, following prominent coverage about the nonmedical use of OxyContin. We found a significant association between news reports and deaths, with media reporting preceding fatal opioid poisonings by two to six months and explaining 88% (p&amp;lt;0.0001, df 78) of the variation in mortality.&lt;/p&gt;

Conclusions/Significance

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;While availability, structural, and individual predispositions are key factors influencing substance use, news reporting may enhance the popularity of psychoactive substances. Albeit ecological in nature, our finding suggests the need for further evaluation of the influence of news media on health. Reporting on prescription opioids conforms to historical patterns of news reporting on other psychoactive substances.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

Mass spectrometry is the most relevant method for analyzing differences in protein expression of tissue and body fluid proteomes. However, standardization of sample handling and sample-to-sample variability are problematic. Stable isotope metabolic labeling of a proteome represents the gold standard for quantitative mass spectrometry analysis. The simultaneous processing of a mixture of labeled and unlabeled samples allows a sensitive and accurate comparative analysis between the respective proteomes. Here, we describe a cost-effective feeding protocol based on a newly developed &lt;sup&gt;15&lt;/sup&gt;N bacteria diet based on &lt;i&gt;Ralstonia eutropha&lt;/i&gt; protein, which was applied to a mouse model for trait anxiety. Tissue from &lt;sup&gt;15&lt;/sup&gt;N-labeled vs. &lt;sup&gt;14&lt;/sup&gt;N-unlabeled mice was examined by mass spectrometry and differences in the expression of glyoxalase-1 (GLO1) and histidine triad nucleotide binding protein 2 (Hint2) proteins were correlated with the animals' psychopathological behaviors for methodological validation and proof of concept, respectively. Additionally, phenotyping unraveled an antidepressant-like effect of the incorporation of the stable isotope &lt;sup&gt;15&lt;/sup&gt;N into the proteome of highly anxious mice. This novel phenomenon is of considerable relevance to the metabolic labeling method and could provide an opportunity for the discovery of candidate proteins involved in depression-like behavior. The newly developed &lt;sup&gt;15&lt;/sup&gt;N bacteria diet provides researchers a novel tool to discover disease-relevant protein expression differences in mouse models using quantitative mass spectrometry.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

Substantial evidence of epidemiology suggests that nuclear susceptibility genes, if present, should be sustained by mutation-selection balance without heterozygote advantage. Therefore, putative nuclear susceptibility genes for schizophrenia should meet special conditions for the persistence of the disease as well as the condition of bearing a positive association with the disease.&lt;/p&gt;

Methodology/Principal Findings

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;We deduced two criteria that every nuclear susceptibility gene for schizophrenia should fulfill for the persistence of the disease under general assumptions of the multifactorial threshold model. The first criterion demands an upper limit of the case-control difference of the allele frequencies, which is determined by the mutation rate at the locus, and the prevalence and the selection coefficient of the disease. The second criterion demands an upper limit of odds ratio for a given allele frequency in the unaffected population. When we examined the top 30 genes at SZGene and the recently reported common variants on chromosome 6p with the criteria using the epidemiological data in a large-sampled Finnish cohort study, it was suggested that most of these are unlikely to confer susceptibility to schizophrenia. The criteria predict that the common disease/common variant hypothesis is unlikely to fit schizophrenia and that nuclear susceptibility genes of moderate effects for schizophrenia, if present, are limited to ‘rare variants’, ‘very common variants’, or variants with exceptionally high mutation rates.&lt;/p&gt;

However, the directionality of the relationship remains unclear and very little research has considered a multi-ethnic population. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of depression in a White-European (WE) and South-Asian (SA) population attending a community diabetes screening programme, and to explore the association of depression with screen-detected Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and impaired glucose regulation (IGR).&lt;/p&gt;

Methodology/Principal Findings

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;Participants were recruited from general practices in Leicestershire (United Kingdom) between August 2004 and December 2007. 4682 WE (40–75 years) and 1327 SA participants (25–75 years) underwent an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, detailed history, anthropometric measurements and completed the World Health Organisation-Five (WHO-5) Wellbeing Index. Depression was defined by a WHO-5 wellbeing score ≤13. Unadjusted prevalence of depression for people in the total sample with T2DM and IGR was 21.3% (21.6% in WE, 20.6% in SA, p = 0.75) and 26.0% (25.3% in WE, 28.9% in SA, p = 0.65) respectively. For people with normal glucose tolerance, the prevalence was 25.1% (24.9% in WE, 26.4% in SA, p = 0.86). Age-adjusted prevalences were higher for females than males. Odds ratios adjusted for age, gender, and ethnicity, showed no significant increase in prevalent depression for people with T2DM (OR = 0.95, 95%CI 0.62 to 1.45) or IGR (OR = 1.17, 95%CI 0.96 to1.42).&lt;/p&gt;

Conclusions

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;Prior to the knowledge of diagnosis, depression was not significantly more prevalent in people with screen detected T2DM or IGR. Differences in prevalent depression between WE and SA people were also not identified. In this multi-ethnic population, female gender was significantly associated with depression.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

Evaluating healthy subjects can have the advantage of providing new strategies for maintaining psychological health and preventing mental illness. We examined the association between mtDNA polymorphisms and temperament in Japanese students. There was no significant difference in examined temperament when analysed by genotypes, 5178–10398 haplotypes, or sex. The subgroup analysis based on sex indicated that there was an interactive effect of the mtDNA A10398G polymorphism and sex on anxiety and obsession. This finding is preliminary and cannot exclude the possibility of false-positive due to small sample size (144 subjects) and multiple statistical testing. Further studies involving a larger sample size or other ethnic groups are necessary to confirm that mtDNA A10398G polymorphism can be a genetic factor for temperament.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

Valid markers of chronic stress would be valuable for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. A recent study suggested monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), epidermal growth factor (EGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as markers of chronic stress. We aimed to confirm these potential biomarkers of prolonged psychosocial stress in female patients.&lt;/p&gt;

Methodology/Principal Findings

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;Circulating levels of MCP-1, EGF and VEGF, along with several other cytokines, were measured in plasma from 42 female patients suffering from exhaustion due to prolonged psychosocial stress and 42 control subjects, using a protein biochip immunoassay. There were no significant differences between patients and controls in any of the cytokines or growth factors analyzed. Furthermore, when using a different protein bioassay and reanalyzing MCP-1 and VEGF in the same samples, markedly different levels were obtained. To further explore if inflammation is present in patients with exhaustion, the classical inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured in another group of patients (n = 89) and controls (n = 88) showing a small but significant increase of CRP levels in the patients.&lt;/p&gt;

Conclusions/Significance

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;MCP-1, EGF and VEGF may not be suitable markers of prolonged psychosocial stress as previously suggested. Furthermore, significant differences were obtained when using two different protein assays measuring the same samples, indicating that comparing studies where different analytic techniques have been used might be difficult. Increased levels of CRP indicate that low-grade inflammation might be present in patients with exhaustion due to prolonged stress exposure but this inflammation does not seem to be reflected by increase in circulating MCP-1 or other cytokines measured.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;In the present study, we investigated the role of somatosensory system in reward-related associative learning using the conditioned place preference model. Lesions were made in somatosensory cortices either before or after conditioning training. We found that lesion of somatosensory cortices before, rather than after morphine conditioning impaired the acquisition of place preference.&lt;/p&gt;

Conclusion

Horses share with humans this characteristic of working on a daily basis and are submitted then to work stressors related to physical constraints and/or more “psychological” conflicts, such as potential controversial orders from the riders or the requirement to suppress emotions. On another hand, horses may perform abnormal repetitive behaviour (“stereotypies”) in response to adverse life conditions. In the present study, we investigated whether the type of work the horses are used for may have an impact on their tendency to show stereotypic behaviour (and its type) outside work. Observations in their box of 76 horses all living in the same conditions, belonging to one breed and one sex, revealed that the prevalence and types of stereotypies performed strongly depended upon the type of work they were used for. The stereotypies observed involved mostly mouth movements and head tossing/nodding. Work constraints probably added to unfavourable living conditions, favouring the emergence of chronic abnormal behaviours. This is especially remarkable as the 23 hours spent in the box were influenced by the one hour work performed every day. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence of potential effects of work stressors on the emergence of abnormal behaviours in an animal species. It raises an important line of thought on the chronic impact of the work situation on the daily life of individuals.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

The glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) is thought to be involved in the extinction of the conditioned fear responses, but its detailed role in initiating and consolidating or maintaining the fear extinction memory is unclear. Here we investigated this issue by using a NMDAR antagonist, MK-801.&lt;/p&gt;

Methods/Main Findings

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;The effects of immediate (beginning at 10 min after the conditioning) and delayed (beginning at 24 h after conditioning) extinctions were first compared with the finding that delayed extinction caused a better and long-lasting (still significant on the 20&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; day after extinction) depression on the conditioned fear responses. In a second experiment, MK-801 was intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected at 40 min before, 4 h or 12 h after the delayed extinction, corresponding to critical time points for initiating, consolidating or maintaining the fear extinction memory. i.p. injection of MK-801 at either 40 min before or 4 h after delayed extinction resulted in an impairment of initiating and consolidating fear extinction memory, which caused a long lasting increased freezing score that was still significant on the 7th day after extinction, compared with extinction group. However, MK-801 administered at 12 h after the delayed extinction, when robust consolidation has been occurred and stabilized, did not affect the established extinction memory. Furthermore, the changed freezing behaviors was not due to an alteration in general anxiety levels, since MK-801 treatment had no effect on the percentage of open-arm time or open-arm entries in an Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) task.&lt;/p&gt;

Conclusions/Significance

COP9 signalosome (CSN), an evolutionarily conserved regulator of the Cullin-based ubiquitin ligases that act in the proteasome pathway, has been found associated with diverse debilitating syndromes, suggesting that CSN may be involved in regulation of dendritic arborization. However, the mechanism of this control, if it exists, is unknown. To address whether the CSN pathway plays a role in dendrites, we used a simple and genetically tractable model, &lt;i&gt;Drosophila&lt;/i&gt; larval peripheral nervous system. Our model study identified the COP9 signalosome as the key and multilayer regulator of dendritic arborization. CSN is responsible for shaping the entire dendritic tree through both stimulating and then repressing dendritic branching. We identified that CSN exerts its dualistic function via control of different Cullins. In particular, CSN stimulates dendritic branching through Cullin1, and inhibits it via control of Cullin3 function. We also identified that Cullin1 acts in neurons with the substrate-specific F-box protein Slimb to target the Cubitus interruptus protein for degradation.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

It has been assumed the effects of systemic CM represent cocaine actions in peripheral tissues. However, the IC&lt;sub&gt;50&lt;/sub&gt; values of CM have not been clearly determined for the major cocaine targets: dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin transporters, and sodium channels. Using cells transfected with individual transporters from mice and synaptosomes from mouse striatum tissues, we observed that the inhibition IC&lt;sub&gt;50&lt;/sub&gt; values for monoamine uptake by CM were 31-fold to 184-fold higher compared to cocaine at each of the transporters. In dorsal root ganglion neurons, cocaine inhibited sodium channels with an apparent IC&lt;sub&gt;50&lt;/sub&gt; of 75 µM, while CM showed no observable effect at concentrations up to 3 mM. These results indicate that an equal dose of CM will not produce an equivalent peripheral effect of cocaine.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

Methodology/Principal Findings

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;The effect of the areolar stimulus on the infants' behavior and autonomic nervous system was compared to that of seven reference stimuli originating either from human or non human mammalian sources, or from an arbitrarily-chosen artificial odorant. The odor of the native areolar secretion intensified more than all other stimuli the infants' inspiratory activity and appetitive oral responses. These responses appeared to develop independently from direct experience with the breast or milk.&lt;/p&gt;

Conclusion/Significance

&lt;p xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:util="http://dtd.nlm.nih.gov/xsl/util" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"&gt;Areolar secretions from lactating women are especially salient to human newborns. Volatile compounds carried in these substrates are thus in a position to play a key role in establishing behavioral and physiological processes pertaining to milk transfer and production, and, hence, to survival and to the early engagement of attachment and bonding.&lt;/p&gt;</content>
