After School Matters® Accepting Applications from Chicago Teenagers for Summer 2012 Programs

WHAT

This summer, Chicago high school students can learn to design fashion-forward hats, coach sports, write music using a professional recording studio, use high-tech lab equipment and more. There are thousands of opportunities to get involved with After School Matters this summer. There is no cost to participate, and teens will be eligible to receive an award for program completion. Apply starting in mid-April!

WHERE

At community organizations, parks, libraries and Chicago Public Schools across the city, as well as downtown at the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts

WHO

Chicago teen residents who are at least 14 years of age and currently enrolled in a Chicago Public Schools high school

WHY

After School Matters provides program opportunities in a safe and structured environment that allow Chicago teens to explore and develop their talents while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond… and, it’s fun!

Chicagoans celebrate this year’s Fourth annual Mole de Mayo outdoor festival on Saturday, May 26th and Sunday May 27th, 2012. The Mole de Mayo Festival will take place on Saturday from11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 27th from noon to 6:00 p.m. at 18th St. and Peoria St., just off of Halsted, in the Pilsen neighborhood, the heart of Chicago’s Mexican community. The event is being organized by ESDC, the Eighteenth Street Development Corporation, a non-profit organization that has served the PilsenCommunity for over 35 years.

Mole (pronounced moe-le) is a traditional Mexican sauce, typically made of chilies, nuts, spices, chocolate and seasonings. Traditionally served with chicken or over enchiladas or just about anything, this dish is a staple in most Mexican households. Mole originates from the Puebla, a region of Mexico.

"We are excited for this 4th annual Family event held throughout the Memorial Day weekend, as we’ve had an outstanding response from years prior and continuously increase the number of vendors and new entertainment actsthat encourage familial participation" said staff ESDC’s, Hector Saldana.

The Mole cook off will include awards in two categories; Best Mole Award and the People’s Choice Award.

The cook-off judges will be an eclectic mix of Chicagoans – including food conosours, celebrity judges and a host of foodies throughout the Chicago Land area.

A variety of restaurants from Pilsen and the surrounding Chicago Communities have signed up to compete!

In addition to sampling the mole and other food specialties, vendors will also be selling Micheladas (Mexican-style Beer Bloody Mary’s) and Sangria. Participants will have the opportunity to take away “Mole de Mayo” souveniers,to shop at the outdoor Mercado/Market that will be filled with local Pilsen businesses, displaying a variety of artisans and merchandise, including Mole vendors. A variety of live entertainment will fill the two days, the much anticipated return of the high flying Lucha Libre Wrestlers will be displaying their fun-filled acrobatics and wild stunt driven performances. As well as two Mariachi bands (a youth and adult band) on Sunday!

Los Carralejas

Los Carralejas (The Beetles) is Colectivo El Pozo’s 3rd original play. Inspired by events in Mexico, playwright and longtime Chicago resident Raúl Dorantes sheds light on the palpable and everyday crisis of kidnappings in his madre patria. Los Carralejas (The Beetles)explores a complex web of kidnappings within a Mexican family, focusing in on the aftermath when its patriarch goes missing.

In November 2011, Mexico’s poignant news source, El Universal published a story detailing a tragic crisis that touches millions of Mexico’s youth. Swept into a criminal world in alarming numbers, a total of 7.8 million youths are presently unemployed and lack means to continue academic pursuits. According to El Universal, of that large sum, more than half are women.

In Mexico, a term has emerged to define this sector of the youth population: the Ninis (ni trabajan, ni estudian/don’t work, don’t study). These youths, faced with no better alternatives, ultimately get caught in the wide net of organized crime. Los carrelejas explores whether forgiveness and reconciliation are the only way out of this tragic sequence of events, an analysis that must be undertaken through crude honesty as the complex layers of the individual and society are peeled away.

About Colectivo el Pozo

Founded in 2009 by Raúl Dorantes, Marcopolo Soto, Ignacio Guevara, and other Latin American writers now residing in Chicago. Colectivo el Pozo has since served as Chicago’s only Spanish-language theatre ensemble dedicated to creating original work that explores the diverse realities of Pan-Latina/o immigrants in the city of Chicago. Since its inception, Colectivo el Pozo has attempted to expand theatrical opportunities for Chicago artists that are mutually interested in developing Spanish-language theatre works and also interested in the range of themes within the broader scope of Immigration. The ensemble ranges from seasoned to emerging actors and participants. Colectivo el Pozo feels it necessary to tackle this impactful artistic genre, that is Theatre, and create a space where the immigrant voice and narrative is regularly staged in Chicago.
