The Gullwing

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2019/11/t/grey-goose-vodka.jpg">

Select France to make this Vodka due to the culinary history of the place, boast about the wheat and Springwater used in making the Vodka, the kind of things usually a Whisky maker talks about, this further distinguishes you from the rest of the products. Finally, price your product 5 times higher than the rest and watch it rise to the top of the sales chart. This is not unusual, a lot of other brands have done the same including Chivas Regal. Actually the Chivas Regal effect is the name given to this phenomenon where people judge the quality of a product by its price.

Another shot of the Mercedes-Benz 500K. Did you know that the "K" in the name stands for Kompressor which means a supercharger. I am not sure if the car I am driving now, a car made 80 years after this car has a supercharger or not. The car I had before this - a Tata Indigo Marina did have a Turbocharger as it was a diesel engine and it is quite common for them to have one.

Have you felt your mood change based on a task? Let's say you were performing a task and you felt down or sad, not because of the task but due to some external factor. The task was left incomplete and your mood improved and you returned to the task, maybe a day or two later. Just as you resumed the task, your mind also picked up the bad mood from where he left it and you are feeling sad again. I have just experienced it while uploading this picture AND the important thing is my mood improved again by acknowledging it. As soon as I realized there is nothing to feel sad about, I am feeling happy.

As a designer I have a special dislike for words like this, there are countless examples of when the corporates have exploited them by offering "exposure" chance to be recognized or win a prize or even employment.
Happy New Year

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2019/1/t/happy-new-year.jpg">

This year has been satisfying for my creative pursuits. 2018 was very good for photography. Maybe it is wrong to say that it was good for photography because I spent seven months without a camera but after that, I did buy a camera with interchangeable lenses. It took me an extraordinarily long time to upgrade but that is a different discussion. Now I have upgraded and not just a new camera, I have some other toys to play with. I have a lensball, I have also bought an adaptor that allows me to use my father's old Olympus lenses increasing my focal range from 28MM to 800MM (a 200MM Olympus lens combined with a 2X converter and a multiplying factor of 2). My carpenter has also made me a light box which means I won't have to use cardboard boxes anymore. With all this, the only limiting factor is my will and creativity.

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2018/8/t/money-plant.jpg">

We used to be extremely good for recycling. Recycling a bottle didn't mean sending it to a recycling plant, melting it again and using it to make a bottle once again. Recycling a bottle meant using it to keep water in the fridge, keeping other liquids in it like oils, ketchup and what not. Now we like to get our bottles and containers from the market and not glass, but plastic. The use of an old whiskey bottle has further made difficult by the tamper-proof mouths. Do you know you can take them out? Well once you do that, the cap won't fit anymore, which is not a problem if you don't intend to close the bottle, as in this case.

It is beneficial for Suntory Holdings to keep the impression of a Kentucky lineage because the product is specific to that area, however when Dow Chemicals takes over Union Carbide, it washes its hands off the Bhopal Gas leak and crimes of Union Carbide claiming it is a different company... even if it chooses to leverage the brand value of Eveready.

I try to take pictures of Supermoon whenever I know there is one and the weather is conducive, as it was on 14th of this month. It was 356,511 kilometers away from the center of Earth, the closest occurrence since January 26, 1948. The next time we can expect this is November 25, 2034. This time around, I decided to let Manu take the pictures. He has a point and shoot camera which is good but for a shoot like this it doesn't have the necessary zoom and manual controls to get a decent picture. I told him what should be his apearture and shutter settings. I guess soon he will get a hang of it and will be able to do it without my supervision.

Lord Krishna described Mahabharat as a war of right and wrong, a war in which no one can remain neutral and judging buy how people react to anything nowadays, makes me believe that we are in the midst of Mahabharat again. If anyone says anything positive about Modi, he is a "Bhakt", and if you just as much as acknowledge that Kejriwal has slashed electricity bills, you are an AAPtard. But is it limited to India only? Not at all! You can see this same trend in US as well and the coming elections has just added fuel to fire.

Just wanted to clarify that this is a Lotus in a pond near my home and not a representation of my political allegiance.

On national Highway 44, the driver of the car pulled over to pee and he was later found by the locals who own this farm in state of shock. While they thought that the guy probably had one drink too many, I know he was not crazy.

Started with a Samsung Galaxy S3 which was the most awful android phone I ever saw and eventually had to return it. Then I bought a Xolo Q1010 which was a very nice phone and a couple of months ago I bought this one, as in previous two occassions, for 12K.

It was a fulfilling Sunday yesterday as I picked up the camera after ages. I had something in mind but was not able to get the effect I wanted to, so I made of best of the what I could. I wanted to light up the bottle from the bottom but the ambient light was too much to have the effect I imagined. I guess I will try again next week.

This made me wonder about the colour of Whisky bottle. Beer is usually kept in green or brown bottle to save it from sun light as the beer exposed to sunlight has a reaction called "skunking" and this is why Corona Beer is called Skunked beer since it comes in clear bottles. Why is the bottle of a whisky that has white and black in it's name green? The box of the bottle and the lable has only black and white colours but the bottle is green. Why?

Apart from the root that is quite commonly eaten, these leaves are used to prepare a delicious snack. These are rolled together with spices and chickpea floor and steamed before being shallow fried.

This picture was taken in Kingdat, at the house of Mira's cousin and this was taken using my RedMi Note 3 phone and not a camera. I am quite pleased with the result. I have not dony any post processing that I won't do to a picture taken using my camera.

I started a portrait of Benedict Cumberbatch after carefully selection an image from more than a dozen I downloaded over the past fortnight. The selected image looked good as a photograph but presented a challenge when I started drawing it because of the grain. I downloaded a few other images which I could use as a reference for hair and eyes and instantly I liked this image. However, since I had already started, I stuck to the old picture but halfway through I was disappointed enough to tear it apart. There was not enough likeness and the drawing started looking like that of Akshay Kumar. I guess I was destined to draw this image instead, so here it is.

The portraits I drew 20 years ago were the most detailed drawings I have done till now. Those were good (at least that is what I think), however the hair in those drawings were mostly a mass of black. I never made an attempt to give definition to hair. Recently I started sketching again and last weekend decided to make a portrait of Robert Deniro. I also saw some videos on how to draw white hair and wanted to try it out. My attempt at that was a complete failure. Getting it right will require a fair amount of practice and patience.

Anyway, I decided to add one level of detail in the drawing that I have not been doing so far and spent some time in drawing the hair. I am pleased with the outcome. What do you think?

"Nothing special about it." is what we feel like when we see a greeting card or a message we get on Facebook or whatsapp using a picture and type on top of that. Really? "No big deal?". Well, about 30 years ago I recieved a New Year card from a photographer. I had a photograph and text written alongside. Ever sinc then, I wanted to use a photograph for a greeting card but the photographers I approached couldn't get it done.

And why am I talking about that now? Because this image of the rose was not as dramatic to behin with. This contrast was added on later and while doing that I couldn't stop thinking about how dramatically we can alter a picture now and how that was almost an impossible task some time ago. Check out the original image below to see the kind of difference photoshop can make.

Have you ever noticed that no matter which whisky they are drinking, the mouth of the bottle is always the old fashioned one, not the new one with a plastic contraption on it to prevent refilling of the bottles. I guess a fluid motion of hands opening a bottle and then effortless pouring in a glass does look better than a guy pouring and nothing coming our of it, then looking at the mouth of the bottle, pouring, nothing coming out again and then a vigrous shake of the bottle before the whisky finally starts pouring.

Comfort Photography

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2015/3/t/after-dark-buildings.jpg">

Like there is comfort food, there is comfort photography - tried and tested subjects with predictable results. It doesn't produce anything spectacular and nothing unique but the results are quite good (enough). Comfort photography in my case it is macro or still life photography and a play of light. Controlling the light for shooting bottles requires some effort and time which I didn't have and the solution is to let go all control of light. An empty bottle works best and the best kind of shots are the overexposed ones like this one.

Any comments and feedback is highly appreciated.

Are you going to mix drinks?

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2014/11/t/mixing-drinks.jpg">

Is it bad to mix my drinks? Of course it is bad to have a whisky if you had a couple of tequila shots before that, a vodka before that, a little wine before that, some bourbon before that, a little rum before that and a few beers before that. Because you already are pretty drunk by now, but apart from that I can't find any reason why I should be a "drink monogamous"

And drink monogamy is what it is. The typical response of a person who has seen you taking a glass of wine after having a whiskey is that he will freeze in his track and ask something like "Are you having a wine after whisky?" as if you have directly violated any of the ten commandments but the same guy will not even notice that the woman you are with is not your wife. So what do you do when you get asked such a question? Well I don't know, but a counter question "can you tell me why is it bad?" seems to work most of the time.

What I believe it is outrageously courageous on the part of producers and obtusely stupid on our part to pay premium price for Scotch whisky, I can still understand it. It is made in a tiny part of the world; it has specific ingredients and has a specific way of making. Vodka on the other hand, is a completely different thing. A Vodka can be produced anywhere in the world and can be made using literally dozens of things - you can use potatoes, grains, beet. Hell, in US people don't even know what was used to make it, they make vodkas using ethanol produced in large quantities by agricultural and industrial giants like Archer Daniels Midland and Midwest Grain Processors. Vodka companies buy that alcohol, filter, dilute, distribute and market the end product as Vodka. How different it is from country liquor made in India in those illegal "daaru ki bhattis"?

What makes the Diwali "Happy"

Does Diwali crackers cause pollution?

Yes.

Should we give up crackers and fireworks on Diwali?

No. Not at all.

I am not going to discuss how other sources of pollution are so many times more harmful than fireworks... how diwali smoke is not even of fraction of what some people may want us to believe. We can have that discussion some other day. Today is why I love fireworks.

You see, spending countless hours driving to visit friends and relatives, getting stressed over Diwali gifts, getting tired every day for a full week while cleaning the house… most of things associated with Diwali are not fun. What makes Diwali is are the fireworks on the night of Diwali. The crackers are the light at the end of tunnel of the Diwali experience; crackers are what make the Diwali “Happy” for me.

Telling a kid to give up crackers is only paying lip service to environment; we can help our environment a lot more if WE ourself are willing to give up a few things… and by raising our voice against the biggest culprits.

I am celebrating a religious holiday; I have a reason to enjoy a bit of fireworks, no matter how lame it may look to others; however no one seems to be having a problem with Fireworks Festivals or World Pyro Olympics who are doing it just for the heck of it.

It's easier to echo the opinion of crowd, but just because everyone is saying it, doesn't mean it is the truth. Before you try to brainwash my kids with the concepts of Green Diwali and Dry Holi, it would be a good idea to do a little research on environment and pollution - things like the 40,000 shining new smoke spewing cars that are added to the roads of capital every month, or the 150 litres of water that an average Dilliwala flushes down the toilet daily, or the impact of mindless consumerism - that makes up keep buying new phones and TVs every 6 months has on the environment, or the urban heat islands - the concept of how your house causes increase in average temperatures.

Telling a kid to give up crackers is only paying lip service to environment; we can help our environment a lot more if WE ourself are willing to give up a few things… and by raising our voice against the biggest culprits.

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2014/10/t/heineken-broken.jpg">

A photo-shoot involving a smashed up glass bottles is not the safest of the thing to do especially when a 9 year old kid is involved, which is unavoidable as Manu HAS to be involved in a photo-shoot if I am doing it. To ensure that he doesn't get hurt, I did this shoot in my mind a few times before I actually did it.

I started with a strong background, a background that can take some punishment as I planned to break the bottle on it. I decided to go with a card board instead of a paper and after I placed the bottle on it, I asked Manuraj to stand at a safe distance while I wrapped my hand in an old towel and smashed the bottle using a brick. I couldn't just drop the brick on it because I had to prevent small shards of glass flying around on which Manu or I might step or sit while taking pictures.

The next challenge was to ensure that he doesn't touch anything while taking macro shots so I had to supervise the entire thing with great concentration and had to keep asking him to move his hands back if got too close. I also moved the bottle around when Manu wanted a different angle.

This is my first attempt at smoke photography and it happened by accident. I was burning a few things and I was using a stick to poke them around so they catch fire. When I pulled out the stick, it had this nice thick smoke rising from it. I kept lighting it and putting out the fire to get the smoke. Finally Mira was holding it and Manu and me were taking pics.

"Its Diwali again and not its once again Christmas. I am having a feeling of Déjà vu. This is what I was doing last year and this is what I am doing now." I am talking about my first job when I was working for the in house design department of Nirula's. A festival meant preparing communication material and dressing up the stores and as a restless young man, I was getting fidgety. I didn't want to spend the rest of my life keep cheching the same boxes year after year.

"It's Sunday and I am ironing my clothes for the coming week. The life is arduously predective" was the feeling I had in the last few months of my stay in Australia. I had completed my studies and was slowly settling in the daily grind.

However I am not having any such feeling after starting drawing after a period of about 20 years...or am I.

This is based on a photograph of Manuraj I took on his last birthday done using a mechanical pencil with a 2B lead. Roll over the image to see a water colour version of the same.

Any living being has a fundamental right to life and it feels outrageous when it is denied "You may want to eat and may need food to stay alive but I don't want to be killed or eaten, that is my right".
This is the Gurdwara Shri Keshgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib which is about 20km from Mira's parents' house in Nangal. Also known as "Takht Shri Keshgarh Sahib" it is one of five highest Sikh institutions in India. Visiting that place is a very peaceful experience and we try to go there everytime we visit Nangal. The good thing is that inspite of being one the five most important places of Sikhs, it is not overly crowded.

A black turtleneck won't make you Steve Jobs

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2014/3/t/green-bottle.jpg">

By wearing a black turtleneck and New Balance sneakers no one will become Steve Jobs because even Steve Jobs was not what he was because of his choice of shirt and shoes, but hey! It doesn't hurt to try to appear like a brilliantly intelligent entrepreneur. The story of green beer bottles is same. There was a shortage of brown glass during the World War II which was a major headache for the breweries who were worried that their beer looks like cheap beer in clear bottles. To differentiate their beers, the breweries started using green bottles. SO does that mean that a beer in a green bottle is better than one a clear bottle? The imitators took the cue and not only packaged their beer in green bottle; they marked up the price as well. In present time, the colour of the bottle is of no relevance at all as glasses in any colour are readily available.

The beer with red star

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2014/3/t/red-star.jpg">

Who do you go and ask a question when the person most likely to know the nswer is about as clueless as you are. When I wanted to know the reason behind the red star on the bottle of Heineken, I went to the site of Heineken and all they can say is - "Buggered if I know!".

The answer to they question "Where does the Red Star on the label come from and what does it stand for?" is:

"The red star is an original icon of the brand, used since the very beginning. Its exact origins are unknown, and there are a few explanations. For instance one explanation is that it was a symbol of European brewers in the Middle Ages, who believed it to have mystical powers to protect their brew.

Another explanation is that four points of the star, accounted for the elements earth, fire, water and wind and that the fifth point is the unknown, which is an element that brewers in the Middle Ages couldn’t control.
A third explanation is that the position of a star on the front door of the brewery indicated the stage of the brewing process. During the Cold War, the original design was altered to avoid association with communism (it was replaced by a white star with a red outline). After the end of the Cold War, the original full red star was restored. For us, the red star's principle association is a festive, warm and cheerful mood."

What is also embarrassing is when people come to me for advice on which DSLR to buy and then asking me which camera do I use and I have to say "Oh! Me, well I use FZ50, it's not an SLR... It is a bridge camera... doesn't have detachable lens but has a host of features..." Well, in that context it is embarrassing to not own a digital SLR but I still don't feel compelled to buy one as I have yet to come across something that I can't do with my camera.

These shots of the Johnnie Walker Black Label have been taken in an incredible small light box. The bottle barely fit in to it. To take the shots of the bottle standing, I user the box vertically and for shots like this, I used it horizontally. To take this shot, I kept the bottle slightly protruding from the box. The flap of the box gave the base for the bottle on which we see the glow. This is the same box as used in the Heineken shoot. Check it here.

I have posted earlier as well about my lightboxes that I use for taking pictures of reflective subjects. A bottle is difficult to shoot as it reflects the surrounding to it is important to isolate it from the surroundings and you have ensure that there is no harsh light pointed directly at the bottle either.

It's the 14th of February, the time when you rush to the bottle shop and stock up so can raise your glass and wish people a Happy Ballantine Day. It is unfair that there is only one such day in an year. We should also have a Chivas Regal Day, a Johnnie Walker Day and most definitely and most importantly, an Old Monk Day.

For someone like me who hates to read fine print, it is comforting to know that the age mentioned on the bottle of the Whisky is the minimum age of the blends so if a whisky is called 12 years old, the youngest blend in the mix is 12 years old with others being even older. Imagine paying a premium price to buy a bottle of 12 or 18 years old whisky, only to go home and read the fine print say "Minimum of 15% of this blend is 12 years old"

This is how I like Scotch Whisky - bottled in Scotland. God know what all gets mixed in the whiskies bottled in India. I am sure you must have heard that more Scotch whisky is sold in India than is made in Scotland. Then we have the variety called "Blended Scotch Whisky" which can consist entirely of Indian whisky mixed with a touch of scotch and that too of questionable quality.

Very quietly and very quickly February has sneaked upon us. It was only yesterday that we were wishing each other a new year and the year is already a month old. It is alarming how quickly time passes. Time also is very persistent and the changes it causes are so subtle in nature that we don't even realise them. Its only when you look back at your wedding album that you realise how different and older you look and that in a year or two, your own kids will complete their college. I can't stop that from happening but I can definitely try to live a life where I won't feel - when i look back - that all those years were wasted on unimportant things.

Watching the telecast of parade was an integral part of Republic Day as a child. This year, I had the good fortune of living the same experience because Manuraj wanted to see the parade and I must admit, watching the parade and listening to all the stories still gives me goose bumps.

To take our Republic Day celebrations one step further, we decided to drive down to India Gate. We did the same two years ago as well and had a chance to take a look at some of the army vehicles. This time though we were a little late and the area was closed off.

Tombs like this fill you with wonder, awe and questions and the biggest among those questions in my mind is "If those people have such spacious accommodations for their dead bodies, how big their houses must have been when they were alive."

Barack Obama gave this place a new lease of life when he visited this place instead of Taj which he couldn't see because of time constraints. Since that day this place has never looked back. A fair amount of money has been pumped in for its restoration and this place has gained a very important place in the tourist map of New Delhi. This is what Porus would have called "being treated like a king by another king".

The first time when we decorated a Christmas tree, Manu knew Santa would come and leave a present for him. In the morning he told me he saw Santa come from the window and leave by the door. Since then he has been waiting for a present every Christmas and so far the gifts he has been expected were also very small, like last year he wanted a poster of Man v/s Wild. This year, he expressed his doubt over the existence of Santa; however he was delighted to find badminton racquets under the Christmas tree.

Today is Vijay Diwas - the day that marks our victory over Pakistan in 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. On this day in 1971, the chief of the Pakistani forces, General Amir Aabdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, surrendered to the Indian Army led by General Jagjit Singh Aurora, in the Ramna Race Course, now Suhrawardy Udyan, in Dhaka after their defeat in the war.

It is a day that fills every Indian with pride and sorrow. Pride for winning the war and sorrow for losing the soldiers and officers lost in doing so.

RIP Paul Walker

I came to know about the death of Paul Walker from the status update of a friend of mine. After reading it, I searched the net to see if this is a hoax or some other stupid thing but to my dismay, it was indeed true and the man is dead. My mind's reaction to his death has been quite slow and has not set in completely as yet. It's not the deaths of someone old for whom I could say "So sad, but he had a fulfilling career". It was not that kind of death where you are instantly filled with grief or shock. Instead my mind started playing the scenes of Fast and Furious in my head. Paul Walker driving, Paul Walker talking to Vin Diesel, Paul Walker busting a rival driver and planting dope to get him arrested. Paul Walker having a beer with Vin Diesel after he saved his ass.

Honestly speaking, I was feeling that the later parts Fast and Furious had not been as good as the initial ones but to know that he is not going to be around to be part of any more sequel is very sad.

This one is for you Paul an empty bottle of your favourite beer. The Fast and Furious franchise is just as empty with you gone. RIP.

The ITPO and the government ministry/agency behind the IITF should evaluate the Trade Fair and do a check on the original agenda with which it was started 33 years ago. In my teens it indeed was a Trade Fair but now its nothing more than a shoping festival. I don't see how what happens for 2 weeks in Novenmber at Pragati Maidan advances Trade or commerce in India... unless retail sales is Trade and Commerce. It is seen by shopkeepers, retailers or brands as an opportunity to sell a lot of stuff in a span of 2 weeks and the ITPO is more than obliging in making it a reality.

Since last year Manu has been collecting wax from burned up candles on Diwali and has been repeatedly asking to make a candle out of it. We finally got around to doing that this year and realised it is surprisingly simple and doesn't make any mess that we thought it would. This particular candle was made in a glass. Mira melted the wax and poured in in this glass. Now the next thing to add was a wick and since we didn't have that, we placed the regular cylindrical candle in the melted was. When it froze, the candle was ready.

When you light it, it throws a flame. It has a small spindle underneath it and it is placed on ground before lighting it and due to its coiled shape, it spins on the ground like anything would with its ass on fire.

Evolution of Diwali Lights

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2013/10/t/ladi.jpg">

In 1980s and also in the earlier part of 90s when I was a little boy, the Diwali lights were not all electrical, there was a mix of diya or lamps, candles and electric lights.

The electrical lights were hand made by boys. Electric cable, bulbs and bulb holders/shades used to come from the market and those were assembled at home. The bulbs were connected in a series using a single cable, the ends of which used to go in the socket. One single fused bulb meant the entire string won't work. To increase the lives of strings, a master bulb would be added at one end which would break the flow of current when heated and created blinking lights.

In the late 90s such strings were not made at home but were bought from local electricians.
Still later, in the late 90s and early 2000, cheap electric lights, also known as Christmas Lights in the west, imported from China were widely available. This is where we are now. We buy them and use them on Diwali.

However, this is also changing and the next emerging trend is to call an electrician and get him to do the Diwali lights for you. The electrician brings his own lights, puts them up and after Diwali takes them down as well - complete outsourcing.

The disadvantage though is that you can't figure out if the decoration is for Diwali or for a wedding.

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was born on 16 October 1670 at Rajouri in the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir. He was named Lachman Dev. Wrestling, horseback riding, and hunting were his major pastimes. As a young man, he once shot dead a doe and was shocked to watch the mother and her aborted fawn writhing in pain and dying. After this gloomy scene he had a change of heart. He left his home and became a disciple of a Bairagi Sadhu: Janaki Das, who gave him the name: Madho Das. In the company of the Sadhus, he travelled through Northern India and finally arrived at Nanded (in present-day Maharashtra), situated on the bank of the river Godavari.

Helping you learn planning and organizing skills

Have you wondered why the wine shops are closed on certain holidays like today? It is to teach you important planning and organizing skills. A dry day ensures that if you are planning a party or just inviting a few guests over, you have to make sure that you have stocked enough of your favorite beer. You have enough beer, then anticipate the other drinks people might request like vodka or a whisky. After all, no one wants to run out of beer in the middle of the party.

Fateh Burj

While gong to Nangal, we take a road called Baba Banda Sing Bahadur Marg a little before Chandigarh which allows us to bypass Chandigarh and saves a few kilometers and some time off our journey. The last time also we spotted something interesting which we thought was a gurudwara but didn't stop. This time around we had started very early and had plenty of time so we stopped there to see what it is and it turned out to be the Fateh Burj.

Fateh Burj, at 328 ft, is the tallest victory tower in the city of Mohali, Punjab, India.

In 1710, Banda Singh Bahadur won the battle against Wazir Khan, who commanded the Mughal army, in this place. Wazir Khan had come to Chappar Chiri to stop the march of the Sikh army led by Banda Singh Bahadur to Sirhind.

I have seen bugs like dragonfly that have wings in which I could see a skeleton but this was the first time I saw a wing that had holes in it. I am wondering how these holes make flying easier for this bug as mother nature always put function before form. Any ideas?

We know that plants have life and if Charles Darwin and his theory of survival of fittest is anything to go by, I am sure anything alive will have some competitive spirit. And when that natural instinct and spirit is not engaged in a struggle for survival it will kick in in other areas. Now, with that in mind, can we confidently rule out the possibility that this leaf is not engaged in some sort of competition with other leaves to see who can hold more drops of water or for longer?

Eighteen years ago, on this day - Monday, 25th September 1995, I was working for Nirula's and I had taken a day off. I was waiting very anxiously for this day for more than a week now. In the morning went to Karol Bagh with my Dad to take the delivery of my my Bullet.

Now two days of weekend don't seem enough for doing all that one has to do but back then, on Sundays - the only weekly off, I used to spend so much time cleaning it. Eighteen years later, the Bullet looks just as new as it used to when I bought it courtsey Bharat who got it restored last year.

For those of you who have owned a bullet, you know owning one is nothing less than a love affair.

Like one can't hold on to sand in his hand, this leaf can't hold on to water, atleast for long.

Difficulty with taking pictures of the nature is that each shot is unique. In still life shots the only difference is the difference you make in composition and lights but in nature shots the natures also makes changes. And while each looks different to you, they look identical to othersmaking it very difficult to pick out the one you like best.

When you have Ganpati visitng you, you have to be a good host and not leave him alone at night. To keep him company me, Manu and my brother slept in the living room where we had set up a small Ganpati temple. At around 2.30 in the morning I woke up because of a blocked nose and a dry mouth and tossed and turned for a while. Not able to sleep, I decide to get up and take some shots of Ganpati including this one.

At this time of the year, he brings in about two third of all visitors here and it won't be wrong to say that this blog has been blessed by Ganpati. I might have quit earlier but Ganpati he has kept me going y contributing so much of traffic.
When we selected the statue, I met this man who inspired confidence in his abilities and I confessed the same.

"It's because of you that I am getting my statue from here. You don't look like the average guy here"

"Actually I work for a surgical equipment company and I come here to help these guys."

He reminded me of my friends from Tata Interactive - Chetan, Rajesh and Sunita who used to paint Ganpati statues during this time of the year, not for money but for passion and it was clear why this man made me think that this is the place from where I want to get my statue.

So when he walked in after his lunch on the day I went to collect my Ganpati, I shared my disappointment.

"I came here because of you and I am disappointed by what I see"

"What happened sir" he asked with genuine concern and listened to my complaints and assured me of a solution. "Sir, give me a little time and I'll fix this for you."

And he did fixed it, better than my expectations.

Ganpati or Andha Kanoon?

It should not have come as a surprise since I knew they had not recorded any of my instructions, still I was angry that they had completely ignored whatever I had said and seeing how things were working, I decided to stay there and get it done in front of my eyes.

"Sir you can come back in 10 minutes, it will be ready"

"I have come here twice and still you have not done what I wanted, how can I trust you to get it right this time around?"

I sat there and generally cribbed about the quality once could get in Bombay versus what they were delivering.

"saab, I have worked in Bombay"

"Really, looking at the poor finish, it doesn't seem like that!"

"No sir, I was there. I used to work a Khar."

"How did you manage to land a job there?"

"I used to make the statues of Andha Kanoon."

Then it dawned to me that this man used to work on the statues of Lady of Justice - a white painted lady with a black blindfold. Now that explains his quality.

The only record kept by the people making Ganpati idol is your phone number at the back of the status and the amount you have paid and the amount that is due. Other than that, every instruction is ignored. This year we decided to select the icon early and went there more than a month in advance. However, even after repeated visits to the place, no work had been done on our statue. Finally I cancelled and took back my advance and went to another vendor. Like the first one, this guy also wrote my phone number but didn't record any other instruction. On the day I was supposed to check out the statue, I found that not much had been done. To make sure that my instruction are recorded in some manner, I made the artist mark the areas with the paint I wanted. He did that and guess what? On the day we had to bring Ganpati home, we went there and realized that inspite of the paint patches he still did it wrong.

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi. This is the fifth time overall and third time in India that Ganpati has blessed us by visiting our home for a couple of days. We started celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi on the insistence of Manuraj and now he is insisting that we do it for more than two days. Let's see how long Ganpati decide to stay with us next year. Once difference this year is the decoration for Ganpati. Instead on the usual, we decided to create a background with quilling. This is one idea we have been thinking about since the last year and Mira has been working on it for a few months now. Just in the final week, it appeared that we won't be able to get it right but by the blessings of Ganpati, it has come out well. I will be posting more details of Ganpati for you in the coming days.

The smaller ones are not reliable as they heat up quite easily resulting is slower transfer rate and also don't last as long as the bigger ones.

Back in school, the two things we were taught about surface tension were the property of a liquid to form a drop and capillary action. You can see it in action in real life is situations like this which are aplenty during monsoon.

Hedges of R K Puram

We all have some childhood memories that always stay fresh in our heads. One of those memories in the walk from the R K Puram bus station to my bua's (paternal aunt) home. We used to take bus route number 711 of DTC to visit her. On the way to her home from the bus stop, there used to be hedges with this plant. As I walked past them, I used to pluck these flowers and these flowers are like the marigold in the sense that you can separate each petal or in this case each tiny flower.

One way to explain signs like not taking pictures, not posting frequently on this blog and generally losing interest can be "buri nazar". If you don't know what that means, go look it up on Wikipedia. I miss the passion, dedication I had when I started in 2005. I will explore the possible reasons for that.

Creating a Splash

I also liked rains as a kid. When I was as old as Manuraj, I used to go to my balcony during the rain, lie down on my belly and push my feet against the wall which would send me sliding down to the other end. After the rains, there would be small puddles on the road in front of my house and there used to be small tadpoles in those puddles. Once while watching those tadpoles with my friends, I remember we picked a couple of them and wrapped them in a candy wrapper and offered to another friend. Now we don't see any tadpoles, however we do spot some snails and slugs. As a teenager, I used to go for a walk with a friend. I remember I have walked from Raja Garden, where my college used to be, to my home in the rain more than once. Even now, at least once in the monsoon, I go out.

Money can't buy you love

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2013/7/t/breezer-empty.jpg">

So the story of Batman being the brand ambassador for Breezer continues. The marketing team, armed with its PPT, made a presentation to Batman who was half convinced about the deal, I mean who can resist the favorite sin of devil - vanity? Who doesn't like a road or a school named after him, or his statue in the park? With all their enthusiasm and eagerness, the young lads didn't know where to stop and they mentioned the kind of money Batman could make out of the deal. Now a drink named after you out of respect is one thing but someone trying to broker a financial deal around it is a completely different ball game.

The team was kicked out of the bat cave and also from Bacardi. They were last heard planning to approach some joker.

This is what happens when you cut costs. Instead of hiring experienced marketers, you hire MBAs fresh out of college and based on movies like the Mystery Men, they come up with ideas like sponsoring a superhero just like the Captain Amazing in the movie; however their choice of the superhero was a disaster. You guessed it right; they chose none other than Batman. To get the most out of their sponsor money, they even changed their logo to a bat to get the maximum bang out of their dollar, and what happened? They made a presentation to Batman and he told them exactly what women told Dove when the company asked them to wash half their face with a regular soap and the other half with Dove - Fuck Off.

This shows real interest

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2013/7/t/nest.jpg">

"This shows real interest" was the comment Manuraj's science teacher made when she held out this model of a nest to the class, and real interest it was. A lot tears and sweat has gone it to this model… well more tears than sweat when Manu started crying when he was not able to get it right. During my morning walk, I kept an eye out for raw material I could use to make the nests and found some twigs and grass that I picked up.

I surfed the web for some ideas on how to make the nest but Mira and Manu didn't wait for that, the next day when I got back from the office I saw them trying to make the nest with Manu in tears. After some time, we successfully made a couple of nests (with your experience as a parent, you know that if you are making something as delicate as this, it is advisable to make two instead of one, especially when you have the material to make it).

Next were the eggs and we debated how that can be done and finally we used clay to make the un-hatched eggs and used eggshells from a chicken egg for the one that has hatched. The bird came from a cage we bought last year from India Gate.

Last year Manu had to make a model of houses including thismodel of an apartment building.

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2013/7/t/nest-bird-eggs.jpg">

Done in advance, two nests instead of one, but that was not the end of it.

Making it was only half the problem, the next challenge was to take it to school without breaking or disturbing it. The teacher should be able to see all the hard work that has gone into this. The answer was a plastic box. Since it was bigger than the nest, we padded the nest with newspaper and some tissues to make it fit snugly.

Here in these pictures you can see the nest in the plastic box. This box was the placed in a plastic bag- they way the bakers put a cake-box in a bag to ensure the top always stay at the top.

Just like everyone else, I am living with a conflict - the conflict between desire and reality. While I like to live in an independent house, like the one I am renting the reality is that I can only afford an apartment in a high rise. So while I am doing what is the most natural and human reaction to it - cribbing, I am also making hay while the sun is shining. In the small patch I call garden, we have grown a few things including this baby corn.

We got the seeds for baby corn during our last visit to DIlli Haat, we were looking for oregano as well but couldn't find it.

Stolen

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2013/7/t/white-flower.jpg">

This is a tiny flower, about two centimeters in diameter and not at all as large as it appears in this shot. The story behind this shot is the belief that plants that you buy don't grow to be as glorious as the ones you get for free, even the stolen ones. This theory of my wife has further been strengthened by the garden of one of my neighbor who is a real tight ass when it comes to paying the gardener for what he brings to the flower; however anything that comes for free is welcome. Their plants have a lot of flowers while the plants in our home are not as great (While I strongly suspect this is because of the amount of sun our plants get). Last month on our trip to Nangal we stopped on the way for lunch and the restaurant had a garden where these flowers were growing. The good thing is you don't need a sapling or seeds; you need just a stem of these plants to start a new plant. Mira got a few stems and what do you know, there is a flower galore in our garden.

I'd like a goodday, please

<img src="http://www.picturejockey.com/pblog/2013/7/t/crow-delhi.jpg">

When I stepped out of my home this morning, I saw a crow in my front yard. It reminded me of the crow who used to come to our house every morning in Bombay for biscuits. That crow would come and sit on the window and wait for his biscuit, and not just any biscuit, he'd take only a Goodday. If I try to give him anything else, he'd turn his head away and if I insisted, he'd take the biscuit and drop it on the ground. I have never had a pet and that was the closest to having one and giving him the biscuit each morning was a lot more than feeding a dog or a cow with leftover bread. The stray dog would gratefully take the bread or sniff it and walk away if he was not interested but this crow would stake his claim, it was like he believed it was his right to get that biscuit in the morning. Once we were making pakoras during navratra and he just refused to take anything else but the pakora we were frying, no bread or biscuit could make him go away. He didn't leave till we gave him the pakora.

This morning when I came out with biscuits the crow was gone, I kept the biscuits on the pillar of the gate hoping he'd come back and eat them. When I went back in, Mira told me about the crow she saw a few days after we moved to Delhi. "He came to check on us at least once. He was sitting so close to Manu and me in the balcony. Usually crows don't allow anyone to come so close to them." I nodded but wondered if that can be true. Even if the crow has decided to follow us, how could he know where we have gone?

This, by the way is a kingfisher sitting on a power cable outside my home.
