9th Annual Kamala Go Surfing Contest in Phuket

Registration from 8am on the 1st of October

The Kamala Go Surfing Contest is held at the northernmost end of Kamala Beach. This contest is in its ninth year and the contest dates are the 1st and 2nd of October. It is organized by locals - members of the Kamala Go Surfing Club.

Kata Beach local Panu Visedsombut repeats as Rip Curl GromSearch Thailand champion

Kata Beach, Phuket, Thailand â Thirteen-year-old Kata Beach surfer Panu Visedsombut braved heavy winds, rain and storm-surf conditions to win the Rip Curl GromSearch Thailand for the second year in a row on Saturday. Visedsombut won every heat he surfed in on his way to the final, and also netted the highest heat total of the day. He takes home a Thailand GromSearch record 10,000 Thai Baht for the victory.

Visedsombut edged out his close friend, and fellow Kata Beach boy, Banjo Schlider, 11, in the final. Finishing in third place was Pumin Chamnan, 12, also from Kata, and in fourth was Chongchet Sroison, 16, who came all the way from Kamala, on the other side of Phuket island.

Dark storm clouds moved in over Kata Beach just before the start of the four-man final, bringing rain and gusting winds of up to 40 knots that nearly blew down the contest site. But the Thailand groms would not be denied, and made the most of the challenging conditions and punchy 3-foot beachbreak.

When I first entertained the thought of looking for waves in the Eastern Gulf of Thailand, I found a few gray photos and the internet and heard tales of wind-blown chest-height waves from several friends at surfboard manufacturing giant Cobra in Chonburi.

Then I met Greg Hodge, the unequivocal pioneer of surfing in Rayong. Greg suggested I come check it out, go for a surf, and see for myself. Located just a few hours from Bangkok, the 12 kilometer-long Mae Ramphung Beach at Rayong is the surferâs escape from the big city â a chance to get in the water without having to drive across Thailand to Phuket or get on an airplane to Bali.

Thailand joins the 2010 PKRA Word Tour, just 4 days after the official tour schedule was posted.

Thailand will open up the season with a Grand Slam event consisting of Freestyle, Course Racing, and Best Trick disciplines. The event to be the first professional kiteboarding event in Asia in the history of the sport, promises to be a new beginning for the sport in the region, as it is expected to attract all the top riders in the world for an exceptional display of kiteboarding in Thailand.

The body of Irishman Michael OâBrien has been recovered off the coast of Thailand.

Mr OâBrien (24), from Templeogue in Dublin, went missing last Tuesday when he went surfing around Koh Pahngan island.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed his body was recovered on Saturday.

A spokesman said: "The department has been providing consular assistance through our consulate in Bangkok and their embassy in Malaysia to his family.â

search is continuing for an Irishman who went missing while surfing off the coast of Thailand earlier this week.

Series Champions Crowned as Quiksilver Thailand Surf Series 2009 Wraps Up with the Kata Beach Island Crown Event in Phuket

The Quiksilver Thailand Surf Series 2009 finished up yesterday in spectacular but often testing surfing conditions at beautiful Kata Beach in Phuket Thailand, with this final event culminating in both Island Crown event winners and the overall championship winners of the three-event series. Over 100 surfers participated in the Island Crown, locals as well as surfers from Australia, Japan, France, South Africa, Indonesia, Hawaii, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Over the course of the three-day event, the surf at Kata Beach varied from 2-3 foot glassy faces to stormy 5-6 foot non-stop windswell, giving the competitors in each division a challenging test of their endurance and skill. âIf I wasnât in the contest I wouldnât have paddled out for some of those heats. In all my years of surfing here in Phuket Iâve never surfed in conditions like this. It was really hard work but Iâm glad I did it,â said Decha âDayâ Sittidej after his heat on Saturday morning. Saturdayâs competition was stopped three times when howling winds brought torrents of rain that blasted the beach for several minutes.
