ZendCon 2012 marked its 8th successful presence at Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, US. Attendance was more than expected at the conference for 4 straight days to cover 5 exciting Keynotes; 10 in-depth tutorials; 65 technical sessions focused on PHP, Zend Framework 2 and Cloud plus gobs of exhibitors and volunteers.

It was a great event to meet with our customers and understand their key business drivers for the year. The pride was essentially in the fact that OSSCube was awarded as Zend Partner System Integrator of the Year...... a testament to our joint success within enterprise PHP projects. Our case studies were well-acknowledged, everyone loved our booth and marketing message....."PHP is a religion" and "OSSCube is the Temple of PHP".

It was successful recruiting week, as top PHP level talent was in attendance, including many Zend Certified Engineers (ZCE’s). We are the world’s only Zend Center of Excellence with many ZCE’s on staff for our PHP projects.

This year, the spread of attendance was really wide, including major partnerships in Red Hat, Oracle, and New Relic, which has increased year over year. It was nice seeing the leading technologies showcasing at the ZendCon exhibit hall. The content was awesome and speakers were excellent. In one line, this premier PHP conference has now gained great market intelligence, as key developers and CIOs voiced their opinion of PHP in the enterprise.

PHP assuring a great fit for building Cloud Apps

The summer 2012 edition of the Zend Developer pulse survey reveals that PHP is the language of choice for developing cloud based applications. The survey has thrown a number of interesting figures and it states that 63% of developers are deploying some apps to the cloud; 1 in 10 developers expect 100 percent of their apps to be cloud-based.

Surveying 3000+ developers, more than half the developers indicated that the apps they are developing today are destined to be deployed in cloud environments. Only one quarter of respondents (26 percent) do not expect any of their apps currently in development to be cloud-based.

Another interesting fact that popped up from the survey is that the data is consistent across company sizes. Like their small-business counterparts, 10 percent of developers in larger corporations (more than 5,000 employees) said that everything they are developing is going to be deployed to either private or public cloud.

So, what are the factors which are making PHP a magnet for enterprises for cloud-based application development? Is it its ability to accelerate development cycle? Time saving capability? Or something associated with cost…? These mentioned factors do play their role, but it’s the combination of speed and ease of use that drives enterprises to build and deploy PHP-based cloud applications quickly.

But to get the more out of PHP and stay efficient, it is also important for enterprises to better manage security updates and patches of PHP, plus keep an eye on the latest frameworks and reusable components from the community for maximum leverage.

PHP favored for cloud apps: survey

As the cloud technology grows, PHP is slowly becoming the programming language of choice, according to a survey of PHP developers worldwide conducted by Zend Technologies. The survey covered 3035 developers worldwide.

“Respondents said they preferred PHP because it was easy to learn and also could be deployed quickly. Seventy-two percent said the language was easily absorbed while 68 per cent found it faster to get things done.Sixty-three percent found the open-source nature of the language to be a plus.”

Zend and IBM release Zend DBi, MySQL replacement for IBM i

Zend and IBM have recently released Zend DBi, a build of the MySQL database for the IBM i platform. With strengthened and expanded collaboration between Zend and IBM, Zend DBi is now available as a 100% compatible drop-in replacement; and Zend, the PHP Company will maintain and distribute it. Compiled to run on IBM i platform, it will evolve with the IBM i community's needs.

Further reports from Zend suggest that Zend DBi erases any uncertainty about the future of IBM i as a supported MySQL platform: it's built using the same open-source code used to build MySQL, and will be kept up to date by Zend and IBM with all features and bug fixes introduced in MySQL. As part of the enterprise-ready PHP technology stack for IBM i, Zend DBi allows users to leverage open and industry standard solutions, while keeping their web and mobile workloads on existing IBM i systems where databases, business logic, and legacy applications reside.

Zend DBi, along with the DB2 Storage Engine from IBM, will be shipped with Zend Server for IBM i and it is also available for free download as a standalone package. Commercial support for Zend DBi will also be available.

In fact, Zend products have already been used to build and run thousands of PHP business-critical applications worldwide.

ZendCon 2012 Call for paper is now open. Come and speak at this Premier PHP Conference to share your experiences and learn from the rockstars of the PHP world.

February Austin PHP Monthly Meetup

Austin PHP Monthly Meetup, held on Feb 09, 2012, was my first major PHP event I attended this year. At the meetup, I had the privilege to meet an excellent group of PHP enthusiasts and programmers. The group had more than 50 attendees came from a wide range of background to share their knowledge and ideas.

The main agenda of this meetup was PHPCloud/DevCloud, Zend Studio where the participation of Zend was the major attraction. Kevin Schroeder, Technology Evangelist for Zend Technologies, gave some great demos on Zend Studio deploying apps on the PHPCloud. Kevin had spoken at several conferences (including ZendCON of course) and is also the co-author of “The IBM i Programmer’s Guide to PHP” and author of “You want to do WHAT with PHP?”

He also illustrated the debugging capabilities of Zend Studio 9.0 through demos. I took it as a great opportunity to take a more in-depth look at PHPCloud, Zend Studio 9 and more!

The conversations carried were interesting, each individual seems to have a good story/background, and I even learned a thing or two!

It was a nice experience meeting with good mix of bright and experienced people and sharing dialog with them. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with great group of PHP programmers. The response of attendees was awesome and overall this is an excellently run and organized meetup.

T-shirts and stickers were also given away to attendees and I really had good time with enthusiasts folks and great topics !!!

Austin PHP Meetup is a great group of folks interested in developing with PHP in the Austin, Texas area. For last 8 years, this meetup has been organized to provide PHP users an opportunity to teach and learn. Austin PHP is now the fifth largest PHP Group in the world.
