What a beautiful start to Memorial Day weekend. If you’re not heading out of town, here’s a sampling of what to do in and around Phinney Ridge and Greenwood; check our Events calendar for more.

Friday Contra Dance at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N.

On Saturday it’s What’s the Word Cabaret, with Michael Schein, Carolyn Wright, William Higareda (MC Varda), Theo Dzielak and Ronin Jazz, at 7:30 p.m. And on Sunday, it’s Northern Tunes Session with Rhythm Rollers at 6 p.m.

“Bach at Leipzig” continues in its second week at Taproot Theatre, 204 N. 85th St.

Karaoke with Katybelle at 8 p.m. Friday at Tim’s Tavern, 602 N. 105th St.; on Sunday it’s Happy Hour Bingo at 4 p.m. and Live Jazz at 8 p.m.

Woodland Park Zoo is holding a contest to name its new pair of Asian small-clawed otters. The contest starts today and runs through June 15. Two contest winners will each get a $100 Umpqua Bank savings account, a ZooParent adoption, and a visit from an Umpqua Bank ice cream truck for 100 friends.

Photo by Ryan Hawk, Woodland Park Zoo.

Qualified entries for the 7-year-old male and 3-year-old female must be in the Malay language as a tribute to the otters’ native southern and southeastern Asia range. Winning names will be chosen by a panel of zoo judges. Pick up a ballot at any Seattle-area Umpqua Bank, clip out a ballot from select issues of The Seattle Times, or submit your otter names online.

Metro Transit is on holiday schedule for Memorial Day, and its providing a special shuttle to Folklife Festival from the Northgate Transit Center.

And just so you know, Phinney Market Pub & Eatery has started serving a full breakfast every weekday, to try to fill the gap from the closing our Male’s Phinney Ridge Café. A new pastry chef will cook up scones, biscuits, coffee cake, breads, and sticky buns.

Children ages 5-6 can take part in a Jedi Engineering camp.

Young Jedi will explore worlds far, far away and engineering principles right in front of them. Defeat the Empire by designing and refining X-Wings, R2-units, and settlements on far-flung edges of the galaxy. Imagination and engineering combine to create motorized and architectural projects such as energy catapults, shield generators and defense turrets.

Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in an interactive environment. Curriculum created for LEGO lovers and newbies alike!

Update Wednesday: After numerous responses from PhinneyWood readers, Noel says Tux has a new home in Wedgwood with a very happy 12-year-old!

Earlier: Tux the cat disappeared from his Phinney Ridge home in January. His owners desperately searched for him, to no avail. Finally, two weeks ago, a PhinneyWood reader contacted us, saying she’d found Tux and was trying to contact his owners, but the phone number was disconnected. We were able to provide the owners’ email address.

Today, Noel tells us she finally reached Tux’s owners, only to find they’ve moved out of the country. And since Noel already has five cats of her own, she’s hoping someone would like to adopt Tux.

Tux is the sweetest cat in the world. He’s just a huge, happy, self-sufficient kitty who wants a meal twice a day and some pets if you can spare them.

The previous owner says he’s around 7 years old and up on all of his shots, perfectly healthy and so loving. Even though he’s quite large (He’s kinda built more like a pit bull then a cat) he’ll almost knock you over with kitty head-bump hugs.

I think the ideal home for Tux would be one where he can be an indoor/outdoor cat. He gets along fine with other cats, loves to be outside, asks for food twice a day and gives big hugs. He’s infinitely entertaining in how he high-steps around the garden, rolling around on the sidewalk to scratch his back and standing with one paw tucked under his chest while he asks for pets.

If you’re interested in adopting Tux, please email Noel.

We’ve had several reports of burglaries, car break-ins and a suspicious person around the neighborhood recently.

Megan posted on our Facebook page that someone spray painted their trash cans and dumped four large bags of garbage at their home on 84th Street on Friday night.

JE says someone stole mini-cypress trees in blue ceramic pots off her porch behind Fred Meyer sometime late Thursday or early Friday morning (photo below).

Janice tells us two houses were burglarized on North 57th Street and Palatine Avenue North Thursday night. She says the burglars appeared to be targeting tools.

Melanie says she witnessed a car break-in in the upper parking lot of the Safeway on North 87th Street and Greenwood Avenue North about a week ago.

I heard the window smash, saw a guy pull a black backpack out of the car. He turned and stared at me before getting into a white car and driving away. Possibly white male, could be 20s or 30s, hard to tell at that distance.

Diana says her house on 80th Street was burglarized last week. The thief broke through a small basement window.

Laptops, jewelry, tv, other small items, are gone. Suspects left with two red and one blue suitcase. Would love to recover red wallet with kid’s pictures more than anything.

And Renee warns of a possible soliciting scam.

I feel like I almost got scammed by a solicitor…working with a shady company called Ultimate Unity, INC. They have many complaints online and he had the usual scheme. He was working on his “job skills” he told me that he wasn’t asking for money or a donation and reassured me 3 times that this was not about taking money from me. All I had to do was rate him on his professionalism and appearance, pick out a book or magazine to send to a charity of my choice, and then he’d get points! He then started filling out a receipt for the amount that I owed for the book I had picked out to send to a charity, I picked Children’s Hospital. I told him that I had asked him if there was a donation involved and he had lied to me so I didn’t trust this and wasn’t about to give him money. He got defensive.

So then the next day as I was walking home from Green Lake and I happened to run into him on the corner of NW 70th St and 2nd Ave NW, I asked him if it was a scam and he of course said it wasn’t. I called the police after researching the company online a little, but since it had been 20 minutes since I had seen him on the street corner, they said they probably wouldn’t be able to find him and to call 911 immediately if I have a solicitor do this again.

A bicyclist who tried to pass a Metro bus in front of Red Mill Burgers around 4:30 this afternoon, was hit by that bus and knocked off his bike. Peter and Sandra Coan were in a car behind the bus and saw the accident. They say the cyclist was winding his way through other cars waiting at the stop light in front of the Phinney Neighborhood Association and were concerned the bus wouldn’t see him.

As the bus pulled away from the stop, the cyclist tried to pass the bus on the left. The bus hit the man, who flew off his bike. The Coans say the man was able to get up and pull his bike off the road himself. He appeared to have an injured hand. He was wearing a helmet.

Seattle Police arrested a felon after a shooting in Greenwood early Saturday morning. From the SPD Blotter:

A 20-year-old felon in possession of a firearm is in jail following a shooting in North Seattle early this morning.

At approximately 1:15 a.m. officers responded to a call of shots fired at North 85th Street and Fremont Avenue North. A responding officer was flagged down at North 86th Street and Fremont Avenue North by a man claiming his friend was shot. The 25-year-old male victim then approached the officer with a gunshot wound to his left wrist. The victim was not forthcoming about the details of what had occurred leading up to the shooting. Several independent witnesses gave officers suspect descriptions as well as a description of the vehicle the suspects fled the scene in, a white Toyota Camry.

Fire department medics responded and transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

A patrol officer located and stopped the suspect vehicle at 3rd Avenue NW and NW 77th Street. A witness was transported to the scene of the stop and positively identified one of the occupants of the Toyota as the person seen running from the shooting scene carrying a gun. Five subjects were detained and transported to the North Precinct for questioning by Gang Unit detectives.

The primary suspect, a 20-year-old male, was booked into the King County Jail for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm (Violation of the Uniform Firearms Act).

The other four subjects were interviewed and released pending further investigation. The vehicle was impounded and taken to the evidence garage for further analysis.

Gang Unit detectives continue to actively investigate.

Lots of streets will be closed in that area, and parking will be a nightmare, so plan accordingly.

Seattle City Light will begin cleaning up a former substation site on May 20. The site, at 949 N. 80th St., is just west of Aurora Avenue North. City Light will bring in heavy equipment and dump trucks to remove dirt and concrete from the site.

There may be low levels of contaminants such as lead present due to past uses at the site. Any contamination that may be present is contained to the site and will be removed by City Light.

Standard precautions will be taken to contain the materials and dust, and prevent them from spreading. Clean soil will then be placed and covered with mulch.

The work is planned to occur during May 20 through June 14. The project will require up to 10 to 15 working days during that period. The hours of work will be 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Monday – Friday.

Trees and hedges on the property will need to be removed as part of the work because the root balls may contain contaminated soils or they would otherwise block access to removal of contaminated soils.

During working days, access to the alley between N. 79th Street and N. 80th Street via Aurora Ave. N. will be closed. There may be some other disruptions to local traffic, parking and sidewalks adjacent to the site; however we will do our best to keep these to a minimum.

For more information, please contact Tom Meyer, Senior Environmental Analyst at (206) 386-9168 or tom.meyer@seattle.gov.

By John Madrid, Managing Broker with John L. Scott Real Estate (sponsored story)

There are no signs that the current trends of low inventory, rising prices, short sales times and multiple offers will be abating anytime soon.

For NW Seattle (including Ballard, Fremont, Green Lake, Phinney Ridge and Wallingford) there continues to be only about a one-month supply of single-family home inventory. This tight inventory can be attributed to continued low interest rates, robust Puget Sound area hiring and a generally improved economy, including significant gains in the stock market. Whether the market will become more “balanced” (defined as a three- to six-month supply of homes) will hinge on many more listings hitting the market over the coming months.

Of NW Seattle homes closed in April, the average sale price was almost 103 percent of the most recent list price. This indicates continued multiple offer situations.

Prospective buyers also should think in terms of at least a minimum of three- to five-year+ home ownership horizon and preferably maintain the option to hold onto their home through future downturns in the market. Home seller costs (excise tax, title/escrow fees, sale commissions) of approximately 9 percent of the sales price should also be factored into any decision to purchase.

Imagine, Leipzig, 1722. Germany’s most renowned music director is dead at the keyboard. As the country’s greatest organists descend to vie for the job, melodies of rivalry, trickery and blackmail compose a fugue of plots and counterplots. Rooted in history but reveling in flights of fiction, Bach at Leipzig is deliciously scored with wild and witty revelations.

Kate is going to do something she’s been wanting to do ever since 2008, when Bocadalupa, an arts organization in Bristol, UK, first mounted their community art project, 88 Cakes. Women from the community made cakes of all kinds as an artistic expression of mothering and put them on display: edible or not, naughty or nice, big or small, for sale or for mom’s tummy-it was an amazing exhibit! We invite you to be a part of this innovative community arts project by making that cake of “mom.” Kate’s will be 3-layered, honoring her own mother of 12 children, all the mothers who have lost a child, and the top for she and Ruby. If the cake doesn’t happen, don’t let that stop you from coming by to gaze, buy a cake for that special mom, or enjoy a piece when we cut a few at the end. Drop off begins at 11:30am on Mother’s Day. Cakes will be on display at the store from 12-5pm. Call Kate with questions: 206-713-1524.

Last Saturday night was “Derby Day” at the Phinney Neighborhood Association, as its annual auction raised more than $105,000 for its programs, including $22,000 for the PNA Hot Meal Program and Greenwood Senior Center during the Raise the Paddle portion of the live auction.

Bow ties and big hats were everywhere.

Amelia Serafin (dressed as a jockey) and her mother, Laurie (wearing a gorgeous hat with a long peacock feather that required a decent amount of clearance from passersby), sold raffle tickets for the Case ‘O Cash ($1,000).

The Case ‘O Cash was won by Jack Herndon (dressed as a horse), who immediately donated it back to the PNA. (Below is Jack and Bill Fenimore, the PNA’s Director of Facilities.)

Once again, the Defenders of Greenwood donated dinner for four at Station 21, which sparked a frenzy of bidding.
