Omega Comics Presents returns with new tales

While most of us are still slogging through the dog days of this long, hot summer, it might be hard to think that autumn is just around the corner. But, indeed, August is nearly over and the sweet allure of cooler days and pro football is looming just over the horizon. And so is the third issue of our flagship anthology series, Omega Comics Presents.

Featuring an inventive cover by the sure-to-be-huge-any-day-now talent John Bivens, Omega Comics Presents #3 features three all-new stories sure to delight, dazzle and distress your unsuspecting eyes. That cover alludes to the issue’s lead feature, Russell Lissau and Bivens’ “One of Us,” a police drama that shows what bridges some cops will cross to take care of their own. Readers will also thrill to the third chapter of Pj Perez’s “Omega,” in which the cat-and-mouse game between a terrorist group and its teenage hostages comes to a head. And rounding out the issue is “The Hero’s Journey,” which delves into the real-world effects of the superhero lifestyle, written by Alex De-Gruchy and penciled by Michael Montenat.

‘Tales from the Boneyard’ debuts online Aug. 1

When comic book anthology Tales from the Boneyard debuts at the 2010 Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival on Nov. 6, readers should ready themselves: Never before has so awesome an assemblage of titanic talents from the Las Vegas Valley come together in one publication. To soften the blow, the tantalizing tales will be slowly revealed to the world via the internet, one stand-alone chapter at a time, beginning Aug. 1, at www.talesfromtheboneyard.com.

Inspired by Restless City, the Las Vegas-themed novel written by seven local authors and released at the 2009 Vegas Valley Book Festival, Tales from the Boneyard will feature new stories tied around the theme of Las Vegas’ Neon Boneyard, a preserve for retired signs and marquees. It will be released one chapter at a time online before being made available for purchase as a whole at the Comic Book Festival – and other outlets, including on this website – in November. Proceeds raised will benefit the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation’s support of the Comic Book Festival.

Edited and compiled by Pop! Goes the Icon publisher Pj Perez (who also contributes a story to the collection), Tales from the Boneyard will feature 48 pages packed with black-and-white stories of drama, adventure, comedy, fantasy and more from comic industry veterans and newcomers alike, including Jarret Keene, Victor Moya, Deryl Skelton, Warren Wucinich, Barret Thomson, F Andrew Taylor and other local creators, all wrapped in a gorgeous cover by painter Danny Roberts.

As we’re hard at work finalizing our fall/winter publishing schedule and getting ready to announce exciting, new projects, sadly, your pals at Pop! Goes the Icon won’t be joining the geek masses at Comic-Con International in San Diego this week. But have no fear, true believers! PGTI is making sure our presence is felt, and if you act swiftly and cunningly, you can take advantage of our boundless generosity. That’s right: We’ve dropped 75 copies of Omega Comics Presents #1 on the unsuspecting crowds at SDCC. Want to get your hands on a copy? Easy — just swing by the Freebies table at the convention, look for the stack of comics resembling the cover on this page, and grab one! How easy is that?

Of course, the trick is, there are only 75 copies, so if you want a free one, you have to get to that Freebies table at Quicksilver speed! PGTI creators hit the 2010 convention circuit

A number of our very own writers and artists will be appearing at various gatherings around North America from now until the end of 2010, so if you’ll be nearby, be sure to swing by, say hello, force them to sign stuff, and maybe bring them donuts. PGTI dishes freebies on Free Comic Book Day

Every comic book fan eagerly awaits the first Saturday in May each year, because that’s when the comics retailers across the globe celebrate Free Comic Book Day. This year’s event, landing on May 1, is sure to delight readers new and old with exclusive offerings from publishers of all size. And if you live in Las Vegas, a comic book store near you should have a little something from your friends at Pop! Goes the Icon: Free copies of Omega Comics Presents #1!

We’ve provided 25 copies each to three local retailers, which means you’ll have to hit your neighborhood store pretty early to avoid missing out. But we’ve got almost every end of the Valley covered by these great shops:

Return from Emerald City

A nifty Tron-like ceiling and Star Wars cosplayers were just part of the awesomeness at Emerald City ComiCon

We’re back, kids. And we’re still pooped! This year’s Emerald City ComiCon — our first — has come and gone, and though it was only two days, it felt like being transported for months to a magical world of huggable people, endless Starbucks and male Slave Leias.

Pop! Goes the Icon founder Pj Perez and Omega Comics Presents contributor Jason Copland spent most of the weekend manning the PGTI table in Artist Alley, wedged between the Ben 10 guys and superstar DC artist Dustin Nguyen (not to be confused with the dude from 21 Jump Street). We talked with lots of people, sold some comics and prints, and gave away the two pages of original art from Jason’s OCP story with Dino Caruso. It was an extremely well-organized and pleasant affair, and the crowds were amazing! Seriously, San Diego Comic-Con may be larger in general, but ECCC is growing quickly — even expanding to three days next year to accommodate the increased traffic.

We appreciate everyone who stopped by to chat, buy stuff or find directions. Sorry we weren’t much help on the third part there. Will we come back to Seattle for another round? Most certainly! Will they have us back? We sure hope so! Stay tuned here for updates on future convention appearances.
