Web-based comics are nothing new for us here at Pop! Goes the Icon. Heck, we started out with producing webcomics such as The Utopian, and have offered our publications for download or viewing via a variety of platforms, including DriveThruComics, Graphicly, and coMix on-the-go. But now, we’ve broadened our reach with simultaneous digital releases on fan-favorite apps Comixology and ComicsPlus.

Comixology is inarguably the most popular mobile comics app on the market, and beginning with Omega Comics Presents vol. 2, you should be able to get all our new releases on your smartphone, tablet or desktop. Meanwhile, ComicsPlus goes beyond the consumer market, also offering a variety of content for libraries across the country as well. Our entire runs to date of both Omega Comics Presents and The Utopian are available there, with more to come.

As always, we strive to bring you the most amount of sequential storytelling for the least amount of money, and have priced all our standard 32-page comics at only 99 cents on these platforms when possible. Stay tuned for our next generation of titles to debut across all these platforms in the near future.

Comic convention season is upon us, and we’re giving you all sorts of opportunities to meet, greet and heckle the hard-working writers, artists and editors who endeavor to bring you the freshest alternative comics this side of the Mississippi. Here’s the run-down for the next month or two:

Pop! Goes the Icon Commander-in-Cheif Pj Perez heads to the Mile High City for Denver Comic Con from May 31-June 2. He’ll be at Artist Valley table J-5 (not far from future Omega Comics Presents contributors Dan Schkade and Jesse Snavlin at I-13 and Tales from the Boneyard/Tales from Fremont Street contributor Deryl Skelton at J-12) with the full line of Pop! Goes the Icon comics (currently in print), plus he’ll probably be shaking hands, doing sketches and trying really hard to get good phone reception.

That same weekend, right here in Sin City, Tales from the Boneyard/Tales from Fremont Street contributor F. Andrew Taylor (plus special guests?) will be manning the first-ever Pop! Goes the Icon Pop! Up Store at the spring Neon Bazaar in downtown Las Vegas on June 1. It’s a fun, one-day pop-up retail event featuring mom-and-pop retailers, artisans, food trucks, and much more, all in the center of the New Downtown action! If you ask nicely, Andy will probably do a sketch for you, too … or maybe tell you about the secret project we have lined up for the near future.

Two weeks later — yes, only two weeks! — it’s back to Las Vegas for Pj Perez as he holds court at the first-ever Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con, happening at the South Point Hotel & Casino from June 14-16. There’s a really great line-up of superstars for this first-time event, so come for the big wigs, stay for the indies!

And don’t think we’ve forgotten you Midwest folks — our ever-busy, ever-booked Omega Comics Presents writer extraordinaire, Russell Lissau, will be appearing at Anime Midwest in Rosemont, Ill. from July 5-7. There, he’ll join Amala’s Blade writer Steve Horton for a panel discussion on Saturday called “Ghosts, Assassins, Zombies, and Murderers,” during which Russell will talk about his upcoming crime graphic novel he’s working on with John Bivens, Old Wounds, which we’ll be happily bringing to the world in the next year.

Phew! That’s a lot of great creators covering a lot of square mileage across this here U.S. of A. We hope you can make it out to one of these fine shows, and if not, well, stay tuned to our events page for all of our upcoming appearances. Or subscribe to our fancy-schmancy newsletter! Or if you spend your days on Facebook, we’re there, too. Or Twitter. Or Tumblr. We’re social like that.

We're still accepting submissions from Las Vegas-based comic book artists to be featured in the next edition of our “Tales From” series through Feb. 28, 2013.

We’re still looking for Las Vegas-based comic book artists to be featured in the next edition of our “Tales From” series, continuing to benefit the Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival. All professional and amateur illustrators who reside in Southern Nevada are encouraged to submit their portfolios for consideration by Feb. 28, 2013.

“Tales from Lost Vegas” tells the story of three friends who discover strengths they never knew existed as they face strange characters and terrifying perils inside a secret city buried beneath the streets of Las Vegas. Written by Ed Hawkins, who also developed the concept behind 2011’s “Tales from Fremont Street,” “Tales from Lost Vegas” will be the first full-color entry in the series, which since 2010 has raised more than $2,500 for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation in support of the annual Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival. “Lost Vegas” will debut at this year’s festival, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2.

To be considered for inclusion for this comic, artists must submit five to 10 pages of sequential art pages (not just pin-ups or sketches) demonstrating their ability to tell a story through pictures. All styles and media are welcome, but all submissions must be submitted digitally via email to editor @ popgoestheicon.com. Each artist selected will be assigned to illustrate one chapter from the book, and must be able to draw 6 to 10 pages from a script. An honorarium of $200 will be awarded to each artist participating.

Thanks to Ralph Mathieu for hosting our live submission session last week at Alternate Reality Comics, and also a high-five to View Newspapers for helping to spread the word in the Book Briefs section of this week’s paper.

We always strive to keep the price of our digital comics affordable and sensible, so all of our comics — including 48-page editions such as Tales from the Boneyard and Tales from Fremont Street — are available for only $1.27 each!
It's time for our annual Black Friday Warehouse Clearance Sale, during which you'll enjoy savings of at least 50 percent off select comics!

We know things have been a bit quiet around here lately, but that’s only because we’re getting ready to unearth some cool, new comics for 2013. In the meantime, however, you know what time it is, right? That’s right — time for our annual Black Friday Warehouse Clearance Sale! Whether you want to shop for Small Business Saturday (we’re small!), Cyber Monday (we’re online!) or just for the love of comics (we make those!), you’ll enjoy savings of at least 50 percent off select issues of OMEGA COMICS PRESENTS, THE UTOPIAN, TALES FROM FREMONT STREET and TALES FROM THE BONEYARD.

Some of these quantities are extremely limited, and the sale ends the night of Monday, Nov. 26, or when supplies run out — whichever comes first. So stock up! If you’ve bought any of these comics in the past and enjoyed them, why not buy a few to give as gifts? Share the joy of reading this holiday season! And help us make room for exciting, new projects we’ll be announcing in the coming year.

Thank you for your support of original, independent comics. Happy Thanksgiving (or as our friends outside the U.S. call it, “Thursday”)!

Goes the Icon returns to the place where it debuted, the annual Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival. Held on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Clark County Library in Las Vegas, the fifth edition of this FREE event will feature more than 40 publishers, artists and vendors, as well as interactive panels, writing workshops, live musical performances, a film screening, portfolio reviews, an art jam, and much more.

Pop! Goes the Icon is proud to be a recognized sponsor of the VVCBF for the second year in a row, a feat made possible by all of you who purchased a copy of Tales from the Boneyard or Tales from Fremont Street in the last few years. We’re honored to be a part of this homegrown event, and hope you’ll bring your friends and family to enjoy a day of geeking out. As usual, you can find PGTI editor and chief nuisance Pj Perez manning the table, with a full array of our comics and books. See you there!
