Town employees got their raises Tuesday night, but it wasn’t entirely a win.

Officials talked of potential layoffs down the road and pointed out that, while both union and non-union employees were being given a 1.5 percent raise this year, they also would be giving back 1 percent of their health insurance costs.

When it came down to it, the turtles won.

Voters on Tuesday decided to keep a one-acre lot on Pelham Street as habitat for the endangered eastern box turtle and other wildlife that may live in the area rather than hand over the property to a nonprofit group like Habitat for Humanity to build an affordable home.

Billy Botsaris, along with fiancée Lorena Petrillo and sister Dina Botsaris, took over ownership of The Omelet Factory on Schoosett Street in August after longtime owner Phil Fitzpatrick decided to sell the business. Since then, Botsaris, who also owns Yianni’s Pizza in Rockland, has done a few renovations, added some items to the lunch menu and will begin serving dinner this week.
