Dell to sell smartphone, starting in China, Brazil

Dell Inc is entering the smartphone market, with its first device to launch in China in late November, followed by Brazil toward the end of the year.

But the world's No. 3 personal computer maker gave scant details on the long-rumored new phone, which is called Mini 3 and uses Google Inc's Android software. The company also declined on Friday to give a timeline for launching smartphones in additional markets.

A source had told Reuters in October that Dell plans to sell a phone in the United States on AT&T Inc's network.

Dell is the latest tech name to bet on a smartphone market dominated by Apple Inc's iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry.

Dell said the Mini 3 will be targeted at the consumer market rather than enterprises. China Mobile, the world's largest mobile carrier by subscribers, and America Movil's Claro will carry the phone.

Dell's phone would also boost Google's fledgling mobile platform, which vies with Apple's and Microsoft's platforms.

In a blog post, Dell said it was launching in China and Brazil because of their large subscriber bases and because of existing telecom partnerships in those countries.

Avi Cohen, managing partner of Avian Securities, said Dell likely opted for a launch in two foreign markets following a lukewarm response from US carriers. He said the challenge for the company will be to differentiate itself.

"I think it's going to be difficult for anybody without a big wealthy software and app base of support to get customers interested, at least in the US and Europe," Cohen said.

In addition to running on Android software, the Mini 3 is based on the OPhone platform, a lower-cost technology developed by chipmaker Marvell Technology Group Ltd.

Given the headstart enjoyed by its rivals, analysts said, Dell faces serious roadblocks to success.

Hapoalim Securities USA analyst Kevin Hunt said it was tough to see how Dell could have any advantage over established phone makers using Android, including HTC Corp, Motorola Inc and Samsung Electronics.

"They could have modest success. I wouldn't see it being a big driver," Hunt said, also noting that Dell is unlikely to make much higher margins in phones than it does in computers.

It was Dell's first official announcement about the phone, although details have been trickling out for months.

Global strategy

Dell noted it has existing agreements with other telecom providers, including AT&T and Verizon in the United States and Vodafone in Europe, which will create more opportunities for the company.

"This is a global strategy," said Dell spokesman Matt Parretta, who declined to say more.

Additional details on Mini 3 models will be announced when the devices are available in stores.

Worldwide factory shipments of smartphones are expected to rise to 235.6 million units in 2010, up 27.9% from 184.2 million in 2009, according to iSuppli.

Shares of Round Rock, Texas-based Dell closed 5 cents lower at $15.40 on the Nasdaq.

Acer aims to overtake HP in notebook sales

Acer recently outpaced Dell as the second largest PC seller in the world. Is No. 1 Hewlett-Packard next on the list?

Acer Chairman J.T. Wang reportedly intends to ship 40 million notebooks in 2010, a number that could help the Taiwanese company challenge and even overtake current champ Hewlett-Packard for the top spot in portable PC sales.

To achieve this goal, Acer is looking to kick up revenue by more than 70 percent over the next three years, said Wang in an interview with Reuters.

Much of that revenue growth is likely to come from an anticipated 50 percent gain in sales for low-cost Netbook PCs. As the economy improves, Wang expects to sell an ever greater number of low-priced, portable PCs, a segment that has been very kind to the company.

As chairman since 2008, Wang has led Acer as its sales and market share have shot up over the past year. And with revenue expected to hit $18 billion this year, he's already targeting the next milestone.

"The idea is to reach $30 billion as soon as possible," Wang told Reuters. "When we look at the overall market, if the PC market starts to grow from next year and handhelds have the potential to become a $200 billion market, $30 billion is a humble target."

On Friday, the company saw third-quarter sales hit $167.6 billion Taiwanese dollars ($5.2 billion), a new high and up 5.3 percent from last year's third quarter. Earnings jumped 14 percent to $3.47 billion Taiwanese dollars ($107.8 million). Had it not been for a shortage of certain components, Acer said it would have done even better.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect sales to rise to $573 billion Taiwanese dollars ($18 billion) for the entire year, and $821 billion Taiwanese dollars ($25 billion) in 2012.

Acer has hit the portable PC market with a fury, releasing a string of small, light, low-cost products. Its latest upcoming entry is the Aspire 1820PT, a 11.6-inch notebook with a swivel screen that transforms it into a tablet computer.

Unlike most small Netbooks that size, the 1820PT will be powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, rather than the slower Atom chip. Wang believes that PC users have been turned off by the slowness of many light, ultrathin portables, including those made by Acer.

"We didn't pay enough attention to that," said Wang in a statement after the third quarter earnings were released. "End-users will not compromise on this low speed problem. This time we should be able to do it right."

Also, at less than 1.36 inches thick, the 1820PT will be thinner than most other current swivel-screen notebook/tablets, such as the Fujitsu LifeBook. To be released in time for the holidays, the new notebook will reportedly offer eight hours of battery life and hold as much as 8GB of RAM, says Acer.

But the company is not just relying on the PC market to stimulate growth. At the end of November, Acer will debut its new smartphone, the Acer Liquid A1. Powered by a 768Mhz Snapdragon processor and running the Android operating system, the Liquid will sport a 3.5 inch touch screen, 800 x 480 high-definition resolution, 256MB of memory, and a 5MP autofocus camera. Also part of the mix will be Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and integration with Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks.

Though hands-on details have been sparse, sites such as Gizmodo and Engadget have already said the Snapdragon CPU will likely turn the Liquid A1 into one of the fastest Android phones around.

Acer already pounced on the smartphone market earlier this year with its Tempo line, all running Windows Mobile. But the Liquid will be its first phone to run the Android OS. And although Android phones have been slowly catching on, they naturally face an uphill battle against top players like the Apple iPhone.

The company has also been busy the past several years on a series of strategic acquisitions, eating up Gateway in 2007, Packard Bell in early 2008, and smartphone maker E-Ten a couple of months later.

The purchases of Gateway and Packard Bell have been part of what Acer calls a multibrand strategy, which has aimed to raise the company's brand awareness in countries such as the U.S.

With a global PC market share of 14 percent (second to HP's 20 percent), Acer has become one of the fastest growing PC makers over the past few years, propelling it past Lenovo and then Dell and soon to battle HP for the top spot.

Acer updates AspireRevo nettop with ION

Acer’s AspireRevo nettop is a bizarre looking device, with a strangely crooked looking chassis meant to be strapped to the back of a monitor diagonally, and a weirdly cramped chiclet keyboard that resembled a mouth full of spit out teeth. But apart from the design, you’ll find a capable little system: a nettop that makes the rare boast of outputing at full 1080p HDMI output, making it seem less aimed at emailing grandmothers and more at consumers looking for a cheap home theater computer.

The latest update of the AspireRevo nettop only deepens the impression. The new R3610-U9012 model boosts a dual-core Atom 330 1.6GHz processor, while doubling the RAM to 2GBs and integrating a full NVIDIO Ion graphic chipset.

HP renames EDS, now HP Enterprise Services

WASHINGTON — US computer giant Hewlett-Packard announced on Wednesday that business services titan EDS, which it acquired a year ago, has been renamed HP Enterprise Services

"The name change marks the next major step in a year-long integration of EDS into HP and emphasizes the growing global role of enterprise technology services in HP's portfolio," HP said in a statement.

HP also said its Technology Solutions Group, responsible for servers, storage, software, networking and technology services for businesses and government organizations, will be renamed the HP Enterprise Business.

HP bought Texas-based business services outsourcing giant EDS in August as part of a 13.9 billion dollar deal aimed at creating a global powerhouse in computer services to compete against IBM.

SKoreans develop technology for no-booting computers

SEOUL — South Korean scientists said Friday they had developed a new transistor which moves faster and consumes less energy than existing semiconductors, a technology opening the way for no-booting computers.

Researchers at the state-run Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) said the new transistor uses not only the on-off state of electric current but also electrons' spinning directions -- clockwise and counter-clockwise -- to handle information.

First conceptualized in the 1990s, "spin-injected field effect transistors" are seen as the next generation devices to replace the conventional metal-oxide semiconductor transistors.

"The prototype spin transistor has paved the way for developing new computers that do not require the time-consuming booting process," Koo Hyun-Cheol, one of the researchers told AFP.

"It will also help develop devices which have memory and central processing units merged into a single chip," he said.

KIST has spent some eight million dollars since 2002 developing the transistor.

It has applied for patents in the United States, Japan and other countries for the technology.

The breakthrough was published in this week's issue of Science magazine.

Google: We're Going To Build A Killer Solar Technology (GOOG)

The current crop of solar technology isn't good enough for Google (GOOG), so it will build its own.

Speaking at a Reuters clean tech summit, the company's green energy czar Bill Weihl said it's developing its own mirror technology for solar thermal plants, exploring "unusual materials for the mirrors both for the reflective surface as well as the substrate that the mirror is mounted on." Solar thermal uses big reflective dishes to generate power.

Google wants to halve the cost of such solar plants, says Weihl. Right now the typical cost is 12 to 18 cents a kilowatt hour (or $600 million to a $1 billion for a 250 MW installation--enough to power around 75,000 homes). Google thinks it can get that down to 5 cents or less in the next two to three years. It will have the new technology ready to show off internally in the next few months.

Weihl thinks there's too few breakthrough ideas in clean tech, and the government isn't spending enough on new solutions. He thinks the government should spend $20-$30 billion over the next ten years on solar. Reuters notes that Google has put less than $50 million into other companies working on green tech..

The reason they've spent less than $50 million to date? There hasn't been much worth investing in.

There's no mention of how much money Google is putting into this project, but in an interview with Grist last year, he said Google would "invest tens of millions of dollars each year over the next few years in our own people, lab space, building prototypes, and investing in start-up companies."

A basic handset that's well designed, the Nokia 6700 classic's stainless steel casing and simple user interface will impress users only interested in calls, text and the occasional photo - which, believe it or not, is still a fair chunk of the population.

A mid-range mobile phone, the Nokia 6700 classic won't appeal to social-networking buffs, business users or those who are interested in the latest and greatest touch-screen smartphones.

The highlight of the Nokia 6700 classic mobile phone is its stainless steel casing. In a day and age when mobile phones are often made of lightweight plastic, the 6700 classic feels sturdy and well built.

Mobile phone reviews and buying advice

Our review unit was emblazoned with a shiny chrome finish, but the Nokia 6700 classic is also available in gloss black. The chrome surface is attractive and will appeal to fashion buffs, but it's near impossible to keep free of fingerprints and smudges.

The Nokia 6700 classic's display is bright and clear. Viewing angles are quite good for a display this size and it performs well in sunlight. Unfortunately, the glossy screen surface means light in an office environment reflects off the display.

The controls are straightforward and consist of a five-way navigational pad, two selection buttons and answer and end call keys. The Nokia 6700 classic also has external volume controls and a dedicated camera button on the right side, but the volume controls in particular feel stiff to press and are positioned too high to comfortably access with one hand.

The Nokia 6700 classic's keypad is almost completely flat, but is quite roomy considering the small size of the handset. The reflective chrome finish matches the rest of the phone facia, but greasy fingers aren't kind to the surface. The last row of keys (*, 0 and #) is a little too close to the bottom edge of the phone.

The Nokia 6700 classic runs the basic Symbian S40 operating system, so users familiar with Nokia mobile phones will have no problems using this handset. The familiar grid style main menu and basic list style submenus remain easy to use and most options are clearly labelled and easily identifiable.

A new addition to the interface is the home screen mode. When switched on, the Nokia 6700 classic allows you to personalise the home screen with a number of shortcuts and notifications. These include a customisable shortcut bar, a search box, links to commonly used applications and a notifications tab for missed calls and messages.

A 5Mp camera with autofocus and flash is perhaps the Nokia 6700 classic's most appealing feature and it takes reasonable photos. Unfortunately, the flash is just a single LED - it's tiny and therefore struggles to adequately take photos in dim lighting. Built-in GPS takes advantage of Nokia's pre-loaded Maps application.

Surprisingly, Nokia's Ovi application store is compatible with the Nokia 6700 classic, though it's not preinstalled. Although it pales into insignificance when compared with Apple's App Store for the iPhone, there are a few free apps that are definitely worth a download, such as the Facebook application. Flickr, Messenger and the Opera Mini browser are three preinstalled apps, but Facebook, YouTube and MySpace shortcuts are merely links to the mobile Web sites.

The lack of a standard 3.5mm headphone jack means the Nokia 6700 classic isn't going to win any awards for multimedia playback. An FM radio, voice recorder and media player are nice inclusions, though, as is the microSD card slot for extra storage.

The Nokia 6700 classic is a HSDPA-capable phone and, interestingly, it is rated at 10Mbps - the fastest 3G phone we've seen. Of course this doesn't mean much in terms of real world 3G speeds as the 6700 doesn't operate on the 850MHz network band. Wi-Fi is a notable omission, but Bluetooth and a standard mini-USB connection are included.

Sony have a wealth of experience in the mobile phone market as testified by the recent addition of the Sony Ericsson C903 Red. The phone is an accomplished handset with numerous useful features and is also slim line and lightweight. Its familiar styling is synonymous with Sony Ericsson phones.

The Sony Ericsson C903 Red provides a 2.4 inch TFT screen which is large enough to view images effectively. Colour reproduction on the screen is good due to the fact that it can display 256,000 colours at a size of 240 x 320 pixels. The screen also comes with a useful scratch resistant surface to provide longevity to the quality of the screen. A useful accelerometer function auto rotates images to their correct aspect whether that is landscape or portrait.

A 5 mega pixel camera is integrated within the phone and operates at a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels. A suite of additional photo aids are included such as auto focus, smile detection and image stabilisation this ensures as much as possible that images taken are clear and vibrant. Video recording and playback are provided as an alternative to static images.

For the purposes of entertainment an MP3 player and stereo FM radio with RDS are built in and includes a familiar range of tools which includes TrackID music recognition. The two alternatives compliment each other well and offer a multitude of musical options form downloaded music files through to local and national radio stations.

Along with the Omnia HD that was announced yesterday, Samsung had also introduced another Omnia branded handset, the Pro B7320, in India. It was just that the announcement of the feature packed and shall we say, better endowed Omnia i8910 HD took the limelight off the PRO. And rightly so.
Considering the features the i8910 HD packs in, this was bound to happen. Let's now take a closer look at the Omnia PRO, which mind you, is quite a capable handset in its own right. The Pro is a full QWERTY laden, Windows Mobile powered device that makes for a nice entry-level business device. At a price of Rs.16,500 in India, it falls in the same price range as the just launched BlackBerry Curve 8520. The E71 from Nokia is just slightly more expensive than this one. We guess the E63, thanks to its cheaper price tag, STILL remains one of the best "office" phones in this range.

As for the features the Pro B7320 has to offer you, it's powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 and is upgradeable to the version 6.5 scheduled to appear soon. So, yes, this one is almost future proof. The screen is a nice QVGA (which has now started to look dated) 320 x 240 pixels one, offering 2.4 inches of real estate. For your imaging needs, Samsung has thrown in a decent 3-megapixel camera with autofocus. On the connectivity side of things, almost everything is covered including Wi-Fi, 3G, EDGE or plain vanilla GPRS. Lest we forget, the phone is USB 2.0 compatible as well.

The number crunching part is handled by a Qualcomm MSM 7201A processor that runs at 528 MHz. That's pretty decent for a Windows Mobile powered device. There is 70 MB of internal storage space which is expandable to 16GB with the help of a microSD card. The phone should offer you a decent battery life with a powerful Li-Ion 1480 mAh battery. The device is now on sale in India at the aforementioned price, Rs. 16,500. So, if you have been inching towards buying the BlackBerry 8250 or the E71, you now have a wider choice spanning three different OS platforms!

Nokia N86 8MP NAM tipped for August 22nd US launch

According to The Nokia Blog’s sources, the Nokia N86 8MP NAM will land in US stores come August 22nd. Announced back at Mobile World Congress in February, the N86 8MP has, unsurprisingly, an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, 3G HSDPA/HSUPA, a 2.6-inch OLED display running at 240 x 320 QVGA resolution, and 8GB of onboard memory augmented with microSD cards.

As for the price, the expected sticker is $499; oddly enough that’s less than the pre-order price over at Nokia’s official webstore, where the N86 goes for $558. Flagship stores may end up getting their stock in a few days earlier than the 22nd, so it’ll be worth ringing around if you’re nearby one.

While the N86 8MP may fall short in sheer megapixel number compared to other camera-equipped cellphones on – or nearly on – the market, according to Nokia it’s the strength and selection of their optics that will make all the difference. Check out our hands-on video with the phone below.
