I believe everyone is talking about BlackBerry Storm and it was supposed to take on the world by storm.

The BlackBerry Storm was badly bruised by reviewers soon after its release, especially by an overwhelmingly negative review by David Pogue, the most influential tech writer, in The New York Times.

Afterwards, there was so much piling-on, that you might expect the Storm to be the worst product of 2008. But it's far from that—especially after a much-needed and welcome software update.

As the first BlackBerry with a touch-screen interface and no physical keyboard, it's a radical departure from previous models and a worthy challenger to the iPhone. It has its share of flaws, many of which were lessened by the first software update, but we suspect it will appeal most to people who haven't used a BlackBerry before.

The Storm has an attractive glossy black exterior, and is actually larger and heavier than the iPhone (4.43 x 2.4 x 0.55 inches, 5.47 ounces.) by a slight amount. It feels solid and sturdy in the hand, with comfortable contouring on the sides.

It doesn't feel like it's going to slip out of your hand, like the iPhone does.

Where the iPhone puts nearly all of its controls on-screen, the Storm offers four physical buttons along the bottom of the screen: call start and end, menu, and go back. There's a voice dialing button on the left edge and volume keys and a camera button along the right. You'll also find a 3.5mm headphone jack on the right edge, which means you can use standard headphones with the Storm.

The top offers lock and mute buttons. These last ones aren't external buttons, though, but areas where you can push down and feel a click. We didn't like the lock button placement, as we kept pushing it accidentally when carrying the phone in a pocket.

There's no keyboard on the Storm, but a 3.3-inch, 360 x 480 pixel, touch screen, with attractively vibrant colors. Thankfully, there's no stylus either; this interface is designed for finger taps. The rear holds the 3.2-megapixel camera lens, along with a bright flash.

Interface
RIM know that the traditional BlackBerry interface might be an impediment with a touch screen, so the Storm's interface is real break from tradition. Either way, it takes getting used to, and isn't as intuitive or uncluttered as the iPhone's.

We're not sure why the designers made some of the choices that they did. For example, the home screen shows eight buttons for often-used tools, such as messages, contacts, and calendar.

If you tap the physical menu button along the bottom, you'll get a full-screen view of all the available applications. You can swipe a finger to scroll through this list, but you can't open or close it with the touch screen; you open it with the menu button and close it with the go back button.

The designers took a risk in creating the Storm's most notorious feature: the physical click needed to tap something on the screen. It's called SurePress.

Unlike other touch screens, where you simply tap the item you want, the Storm requires you to depress the screen slightly until you feel a click. The whole screen acts like a physical button.

We can see how it was meant to appeal to people new to touch screens who might not be comfortable with them, but using it is no pleasure. Making that little extra press is tiring, especially when you're composing e-mail.

Thus far, the GSM Cookie has been a huge success for LG — selling over 2 million handsets worldwide since its launch in October 2008 — and its extension into the CDMA market will only help to boost those sales figures. The CDMA2000 1x-compatible Cookie appears to be similar to the GSM version in terms of specifications with the same 3-inch touchscreen display, 3 megapixel camera, accelerometer, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and FM radio. It’s also compatible with Verizon Wireless and Sprint networks of course, though there’s currently no word on the handset being carried by either. Acer has opted to produce its first smartphone which will run on Google search engine.

Acer introduced its first family of smartphones, Tempo, about a month ago. It will include four Windows Mobile handsets: the M900, F900, X960 and DX900. Now comes word that the world's third largest PC maker also has smartphones built on Google's Android platform in the works. These devices may even ship before the end of the year.

Acer's Smart Handheld Business Group leader Aymar de Lencquesaing said in a television interview recently, "We have not made any formal announcement of an Android- based device, although it's likely that we'll have one in 2009. We intend to have devices that will take advantage of multiple platforms."

Rumor has it Acer's got at leat two Android-run smartphones in the offing for 2009. One is thought to be called the Acer A1. This model is expected to ship this fall.

It is said that Taiwanese original equipment manufacturers Compal and Arima are building Acer's new mobile products.

The popular television, film and video streaming site Hulu is coming to the Apple iPhone and iPod touch as a downloadable application soon, according to one report.

More rumors surrounding Apple’s iPhone are springing up this week, this time related to content as opposed to software features such as high-speed 802.11n Wi-Fi capability.

Silicon Valley Insider quotes “a plugged-in” industry executive as saying a Hulu—a joint venture of NBC Universal and Fox (News Corp) that allows users to stream high-quality television and films—application is coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch soon and is reportedly “badass.”

The report comes ahead of Apple’s second-quarter report on Wednesday, when the company will disclose earnings made between January and March 2009. The report cites the source as saying the Hulu application will be as good as the Website and is only months away from finding a home on the iPhone.

A recent report by digital marketing intelligence firm ComScore found Hulu was ranked sixth in sites used to watch video online. Google’s ubiquitous YouTube site ranked first.

While mobile video is still a nascent market, thanks mainly to poor quality and limited availability, in March mobile video solutions provider QuickPlay Media commissioned an independent Market Tools survey focused on mobile TV and video consumption in the United States. The results imply the market is poised to grow quickly—and soon.

The online survey of approximately 1,000 U.S.-based mobile subscribers between the ages of 18 and 35 suggests consumers are confident in the uptake of mobile TV and video, with 78 percent expecting an increase in usage by 2010. Additionally, the number of people watching TV and video content on their mobile device has remained steady from 2008 to 2009 at 35 percent.

The survey found for those who have not tried a mobile TV and video service, perceived cost continues to represent the biggest barrier to adoption, with 58 percent indicating that it is the No. 1 reason they have not viewed TV and video on their mobile phone. The results also found that while slightly less than a quarter of consumers are using a multimedia-enabled phone (24 percent), these devices will play a critical role in enticing consumers to watch TV and video on their mobile phone.

Mobile video requires a lot of bandwidth to view properly, and while that may be a roadblock to further adoption by carriers, the survey shows customers are increasingly demanding the option to watch video on their mobile device. The survey found 38 percent said if they were considering changing wireless carriers, their ability to offer the latest multimedia-enabled PDA or smartphone would impact their decision to choose that carrier, while 41 percent of respondents stated that they would be more likely to watch TV and videos on their phone if they owned a multimedia-enabled PDA or smartphone.

By combining the allure of Apple’s slick iPhone with Hulu’s breadth of content, the combination may be enough to move consumers to the iPhone, boosting AT&T subscription rate, iPhone sales figures and Hulu Web traffic. Hulu’s ease of use and slick design has earned the site praise. While CBS, Joost and others offer applications for the iPhone, Hulu’s high-quality resolution, wealth of content and expanding popularity make it well-positioned to be a popular offering when—or if—it comes to market in the next few months.

If the Zune HD is coming with a full touchscreen, to compete with the likes of the iPod Touch, then Microsoft may in effect be reviving the PDA, a phone-less digital companion that keeps track of personal information, contacts, and calendar appointments. The Zune HD will be the perfect mobile companion for those who may not want or need phone functionality. Those users, like classsic PDA owners, can synchronize personal information, browse the web on WiFi, enjoy multimedia content (music, videos, HD radio content), and make use of applications and games.

Now, if the Zune HD can download applications and games from the newly announced Windows Marketplace (as reported by the specs above), the Windows Mobile app store, and Windows Mobile can play DRM-protected Zune content including music and videos, we'd have a winner on both fronts! However, to fully create value, Microsoft may need to bring the Windows Mobile OS to Zune so that the Zune can make use of all applications developed for its smartphone cousins, much like how the iPhone and iPod Touch run essentially the same operating systems and have access to the same application store.
