An operating system is a type of software that is installed on a computer to act as the "brain" that causes all the hardware to work together. It is the software component of a computer that is responsible for the management and coordination of activities as well as the sharing of the resources on the computer.

The operating system (OS) acts as a host for application programs that are run on the machine. As a host, one of the purposes of operating system software is to handle the details of the operation of the hardware. This relieves application programs from having to manage these details. Almost all computers, including hand-held computers, desktop computers, and even modern video game consoles, use an operating system of some type.

Modern operating system software provides the capability of running multiple application programs simultaneously, which is referred to as multiprogramming. Each program running is represented by a process in the operating system. The operating system provides an execution environment for each process by sharing the hardware resources so that each application does not need to be aware of the execution of other processes.

The central processing unit (CPU) of the computer can be used by only one program at a time. The operating system software allows the CPU to be shared among the processes by using a technique known as time slicing. In this manner, the processes take turns using the CPU.

Single-user desktop personal computers (PCs) may simplify this further by granting the CPU to whichever application the user has currently selected and allowing the user to switch between applications at will.

Operating system software also provides security to a computer by preventing unauthorized access to the computer's resources. Many operating systems also prevent users of a computer from accidentally or intentionally interfering with each other. The security policies that an operating system enforces range from none in the case of a video game console, to simple password protection for hand-held and desktop computers, to very elaborate schemes for use in high-security environments.

With operating system software, you are able to manage various devices such as a mouse or a printer without even really knowing you are doing so. Without this program, you would have much difficulty programming a computer to recognize these devices and use them properly.

Without operating system software, the operating of a computer would be much more difficult. The development of these software programs makes it possible for everyday people to be able to use a computer for all sorts of tasks. Operating system software is a necessity in the computer age - especially when we depend on them for so much.

Once the adware is downloaded onto your system, you begin to receive an interminable number of pop-up online advertisements and junk mail. Many users perceive this as a nuisance, and allow this to continue. But they are making a mistake. They don't know how harmful is adware.

The most crucial loss is the loss of time and productivity. You end up spending more time and effort in getting rid of the pop-ups and junk than on your actual work. It also upsets your rhythm because it breaks your focus. Some adware continues to disrupt your working even when you are offline. This is because these files are cleverly concealed within system or program files, and continue to cause damage whether you are online or offline.

Apart from loss of precious time, adware can also slow down the computer, and eat into your disk space. It can also affect your Internet experience because, unknown to you, each adware file is communicating with its parent file on the net. This eats up bandwidth, and slows down downloads.

Also, these malicious files take up a lot of hard drive space within your system, thus leaving less space for your work documents and presentations. This in turn, has a taxing effect on the functioning of the CPU because adware programs are always active and overwork your system resources. In a nutshell, adware makes your computer unnecessarily slow and overburdened.

Finally, there are certain malevolent adware programs that do more that waste your time or slow down computer speed. They may even pilfer important information if you are not cautious. In order to avoid damage, you must install an anti-adware program. The demand to run this program along with a regular virus scan will appear automatically on your system; do not ignore these requirements.

You also need to change the security settings to medium. This will block some of the adware that is being quietly slipped into your computer. However, the best way to deal with adware is to avoid free downloads. Even when you download such free programs you must go through the license agreement carefully. Make sure that you are not giving the right to the application maker to slip adware into your system.

Here are some great tips on keeping your equipment clean and well maintained.

Most people don't realize that a dirty desk top computer or laptop computer can actually break down much easier than a clean one. When it comes to computers you must do some general maintenance to make sure that your computer runs optimally.

Many people don't realize that dirt and dust are big culprits in causing problems for computers. If dust or dirt builds up around the computer or by the fan opening that is necessary to keep your computer cool, you can suffer severe computer problems.

Make sure that you keep any ducts, opening or areas near cooling fans clean and free of dust and dirt. You don't want your computer to over heat or your hard drive to crash. It is very easy to clean your computer. You can use a soft cloth with some rubbing alcohol. Alcohol evaporates quickly and can help clean all your electrical equipment. There are also air sprays that flush out dirt and dust on your keyboard or around cooling fans with a quick burst of pressurized air. These two products are extremely affordable and can help keep your computer well maintained.

For your computer screen, rubbing alcohol is also a good choice, make sure that you don't use a rough pad or cloth on your screen- you can scratch or damage it. It is also important to keep your computer away from the wall or corners where dust accumulates. Many people keep their computer system under the desk or their laptop a few inches off of the desk in case a glass of water or coffee spills on your desk area. So follow these great cleaning tips in order to keep your computer well maintained.

Nobody likes it. Nobody wants it. No, we aren't talking about the canned meat, but those unsolicited, unwanted, irrelevant, or even inappropriate messages that hit our email in mass quantities. While most mailboxes have some type of spam filtering software built into their system, they never seem to do a very good job of catching what you want them to catch, and letting through what you want them to let through. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to turn to some type of additional spam filtering product. One such filtering system, designed for Outlook and Outlook Express users, is receiving rave reviews for its superior detection and low rate of false positives (i.e,. what you want to get through does).

Cloudmark Desktop, formerly known as SpamNet and SafetyBar, uses a unique community-based filtering process. This community-based filtering system relies on users to report any new spam. Within minutes of a spammer being reported, they are placed on a blacklist. At that point, no other member will receive that particular spam. Cloudmark also applies the same basic process to phishing email scams.

What is interesting is how Cloudmark creates a digital reputation model of reporting spam. Each user starts with a neutral reputation. A user's reputation will rise if they are among the first to identify undesirable content. On the flip side of the coin, a user's reputation falls when they falsely reports spam. The result is a system that is automated, highly scalable and resistant to tampering.

An added bonus is that because the software doesn't depend upon the user to configure its settings, it installs in minutes and is easy to use. Cloudmark blocks over 98% of spam from reaching your inbox and boasts over one million users worldwide.

The cost of program is $39.95 for a one-year subscription. The subscription is renewable annually. For those wanting to test drive the product, a free 15-day trial period for either your Outlook or Outlook Express is available.

In an office setting, computers have become an indispensable tool for commerce. It facilitates greater output at a lesser time. Accountants, for instance, need computers to speed up work on financial statements. Engineers and architects used software to perfect their designs. Every professional, at one time or another, needs to get acquainted with computer.

But along with the opportunities come responsibilities. Computers are subject to wear and tear. But probably the biggest threat to computers is the person using it. Yes, you and me. Human error posed the biggest problem to computers.

It wouldn't be a pretty sight to open your computer one day and find out that it wasn't running anymore. Some nasty virus or a mechanical problem occurred. All your important files are lost. And you end up, spending company's valuable time and effort in data recovery.

Data recovery can be tedious. The good news is data recovery, more often than not, is still possible. Data recovery can be done in either two ways: by using data recovery software or data recovery services. Data recovery software can help you revive the data which you thought is lost. Data recovery services can do more than that. Data recovery service is more extensive and required more technical skills.

Before engaging a hard drive recovery service to attempt data recovery, it pays to know what hard drive and hard drive failure are. A hard drive is a stack of disc coated with thin layers of substrate and magnetic material. Hovering above the disc is the drivehead. The discs create a slight breeze as they spin, creating a cushion of air for the head. The drivehead, as a rule, never touches the discs. Unless, something happens to that cushion of air. If in some rare circumstance the head touches the discs, it will drop through the magnetic layers and cut slashes into the surface of the discs. It grinds through the aluminum substrate and spray dust from al three layers and allover the discs. One piece of dust is what causes all of this to happen. The resulting hard drive failure occurs.

What a hard drive recovery service does first is to try and make the damaged drive run again. The hard drive recovery service clones your drive to a blank drive then work on the cloned drive. As for the damaged parts, they attempt to work around those too. The hard drive recovery service then used an off-the shelf variety or custom-made data recovery software. If that won't work, the hard drive recovery service attempts to rebuild the data by hand to start the lengthy process of data recovery. The hard drive recovery service recreates the Master Boot Record (MBR) and the Master File Table (MFT). The MBR tells how big the drive is while the MFT tells where all the bits of data are on the drive.

A hard drive recovery service cannot guarantee that data recovery is possible in all circumstances though. Data recovery is oftentimes a lengthy process that is why data recovery is always best to use a professional hard drive recovery service or recommended data recovery software. Or else, NO data recovery will be done and you might run the risk of damaging your computer further.

IBM offers several levels of hardware certification, each which can help you to become more proficient in understanding how the technology and computer programs work from their internal drive. This will allow you to problem solve, maintain or develop hardware programs that can be used. It offers hardware systems that are not only located externally, but also that are located as areas on the Internet. There are also storage IT Certification courses that you can take in order to understand how to more effectively use space with the hardware that is available.

Other IT Certifications

IBM also has several other programs that they will offer IT Certification in. One of the programs that they offer is known as the infrastructure systems architect. This will allow someone who is getting the certification to understand the technical areas that are related to IBM. Things such as sales and skills for business can be developed through this certification. This will also help those getting the certification to understand how infrastructure of a computer program and design can help to sell to customers, either through the Internet or through a different type of technological display.

The other part of these miscellaneous IT Certifications is related to getting on demand business as well as learning how to use technology for retail stores. Certain types of technology can help to not only boost business, either on the web or locally, but will also help in the maintenance and organization of that business. If you have a business and are looking for solutions to organize, maintain or increase your business size, then you can look into these types of IT Certifications to give you the necessary technology background in order to help with sales.

IT Certification Levels

After you have decided the area that you would like to get the IT Certification in, you will need to look into the degree that you will want to get. Beginning courses will be offered, but there are also several levels above this. By setting this goal, you will know how much training you will get in each area. IBM begins with offering an IT Certification as a specialist, which understands the specifics of each program. From here, you can grow into becoming an associate, which allows you to understand the universal database that is part of IBM. After this point, IBM offers different levels of developers that move into understanding the specific details that are associated with databases, web development, and hardware development. Depending on your interests, you can get as detailed as you want with the IT Certification from IBM.

Have you ever had the experience of finding programs installed in your computer without your knowledge?

What about being annoyed by numerous popup advertisements?

How about your start page or home page changing all the time?

What about your search results suddenly changing or your computer dialing out?

Chances are you have been a victim of spyware, hijackers, adware, dialers, or keyloggers.

Terms Defined

Let's take a look at some of these computer menaces.

* Spyware - This is an infectious program installed surreptitiously in the computer system and supplies the software writer or the website which installed it confidential information about the user, may it be the websites you often visit, your activities in the computer, or even your password and credit card number. It can get into your computer in the form of a software virus or as a consequence of installing a program.

* Hijackers - Sometimes called hijackware, this program changes your computer's browser settings in such a way that you are brought to web sites that you had no intention of looking into in the first place. These hijackers are often start pages and search pages to customers who pay for the service because of the traffic generated by them. This malware may slow your computer and cause your browser to crash.

* Adware - This is a program designed to display advertisements on your personal computer. And we are not talking about your normal advertisement every time you visit a website. Adware uses popup ad windows or even voice messages that are not by any means connected to the websites that you often visit.

* Dialers - These are programs installed into your computer system, which may rake you thousands of dollars in phone bill. A web dialer can be installed like a virus, Trojan, or any other malicious code into your computer system through e-mail attachments or downloaded software. Once installed, it will dial charge lines even when the user is not viewing a pay-per-view web site. Charges may range from a few pennies to dollars per minute.

* Keyloggers - Also known as keystroke loggers, keyloggers record your keystrokes in the computer (more sophisticated types may even capture screen shots) and will log or report them to the individual who installed them. Some companies use the commercial type to monitor employee resource use or monitor corporate spies. Law enforcement agencies may also use keyloggers to collect evidence against suspected criminals. However, some may use these keystroke loggers to spy on their co-workers and bosses.

Protection

Where do we get protection from these computer security threats?

What should we look for a free spyware and what-have-you removal system?

There are a few things that we can take into consideration before we download a free spyware remover from the Internet:

1. A good spyware remover should provide effective protection against the software infections mentioned above (since they are the main software infections that give away confidential details about the user and decreases the efficiency of your computer), as well as all other malicious software invented by man if possible.

2. Your free spyware remover should come with cleaners so that you'll be able to detect spyware online. Free spyware cleaner programs also remove spyware programs that are running currently in your computer.

After installing your free spyware remover, download the current anti-virus definitions available in the Internet. You may use two or more to guarantee that all malware threats are discovered and removed quickly. Also, you may want to have a full system scan every week. Make sure that your security program and anti-virus are always enabled to scan all e-mails, may they be incoming or outgoing.

What are you waiting for? Clear your computer now of malicious software and programs.

Tablet computers haven't exactly caught on in the mainstream, however times are changing and newer smaller tablet computers are making inroads.

Tablet computers are becoming more popular as they become smaller and are marketed towards the public. Originally used by professionals, today's tablet computers can be a great way to interact with your computer on the go without having to use a keyboard or carry around a laptop.

Many tablet computers have the capability to do many office type tasks, communicate wirelessly, have email functions, mp3 functions as well as display and store digital images and videos. Tablet computers may be the next type of portable media centers for people on the go.

Tablet computers are still very expensive and the least expensive tablet computers cost about $1,000. While tablet computers are extremely handy and able to do so much in such a small package, it may be a couple of years before they catch on to the public's imagination. Many people are first becoming accustomed to carrying around their media files and writing and sending email from on the go. It may take a couple of years before the public needs a more powerful tool.

However if you are looking for a great way to carry around all your media files, would like a decent size display screen and be able to communicate through email as well as voice over wireless internet hot spots, check out tablet computers.

Even though this information can be astounding, many of us still don't take the time to back up the information on our laptops.

To put it in simple terms, nothing in the computer industry is fool proof. Hard drives can crash, the laptop can get stolen, or it can even be dropped and rendered useless. To ensure that we are never left without our precious data, we should always create a backup of our information.

There is no mistaken the fact that over a million laptops have been stolen over the years in the United States alone. Anytime a laptop is stolen, chances are that it won't be recovered. If the information wasn't backed up, then the owner will be left with no laptop - but more importantly - no backed up data either.

Just like you can with desktop computers, you can also create a backup of the data on your laptop as well. You can use online services, back it up remotely, or use several other methods to ensure that you keep all of your data. Preserving your data is something you should really look into, especially if you have business material on your laptop.

The best way to go about backing up your data and files is to burn them to a data CD. Data CDs can hold up to 700 MB (Mega Bytes) of data, which means a lot of files. To back things up this way, all you need is a CD/RW burner in your laptop, which most of the newer ones come with.

The only drawback to laptops is the fact that they don't offer near as much storage or security measures as a desktop PC. Desktop computers have a lot more power, and they can also do things (including backups) in a fraction of the time.

The laptop computer was designed for on the go use, which is the main reason why people don't really think about backing up their data. When the thought finally does come to mind, it is normally too late to do anything about it.

As mentioned above, the easiest and quickest way to backup your laptop data is to use an online backup service. Depending on your connection to the Internet, it can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours. Although it may take you a little bit of time, you'll have the satisfaction in knowing that your data is there if something should happen.

Whether it's for your business or personal use, you can't go wrong backing up your data. You should always create a backup of your data at least once a month, even more than that if you have a lot of important information that you add to your laptop on a frequent basis.

Originally, because of the year of release, it was codenamed Windows Millennium and is sometimes known by that name even today. Windows ME was a hybrid operating system combining both 16-bit and 32-bit technologies.

It was marketed as a home edition version of Windows as the other operating system released in 2000 - Windows 2000 - was generally thought of as a business application. Windows ME gave personal computer users many new features that made their computer experience easier and more convenient.

It provided Internet Explorer 5.5, Windows Media Player 7, and the new Windows Movie Maker software, which provided basic video editing and was designed to be easy for home users. Microsoft also updated the graphical user interface in Windows Me with some of the features that were first introduced in Windows 2000.

Windows ME was an MS-DOS based version like its predecessors but with access to real mode MD-DOS restricted for faster system boot time. This was one of the most publicized changes in Windows ME because applications that needed real mode DOS to run such as with older disk utilities. These older utilities would not run under the Windows ME operating system.

Compared with other releases, Windows ME had a short shelf-life. It was soon replaced by Windows XP which was released in 2001. The computer magazine PC World declared in 2006 that Windows ME was the fourth "worst tech product of all time" because of various technical issues.

Despite that, Windows ME did provide users with some advancements that previous versions of Windows did not have including:

* System Restore - used to simplify troubleshooting and solve problems easier
* Universal Plug and Play - which allowed user to simply plug in a peripheral device and have it operate properly
* Image Acquisition - allowed for the operating system software to transparently communicate with imaging devices such as digital cameras and scanners
* Automatic Updates - which automatically downloaded and installed any critical updates from the Microsoft website with little user interaction
* Help and Support - in the form of an HTML program to allow user to find and access various support for problems with the computer software

Because there were so many issues related with the installation and running of Windows ME, Microsoft quickly addressed the problem and immediately began working on a new Windows version which, as we've already said, would show up on the market about a year later. Just like with any other operating system software, despite bugs and problems, constant "tweaking" and improving is done to make a better product.

It is such a hassle to find personal computers crashing especially if you know that all the care have been given to prevent such a catastrophic event from happening. By all care means every bit of ounce that the information technology department can do they are instructed to do so. The system starts off clean with passwords needed to be able to open and use the personal computer so that not just anyone can access it.

What follows then are that the programs essential to the business and the owner are uploaded and these said programs are double checked to see if they do not have any bogus programs attached to them before they are installed. Even internet usage is limited just to assure non-entry of any programs or any sort of connection that can bring in problems to the existing system.

This may mean that only company email systems and networks can be opened while non-essentials like messengers or online shared programs cannot be uploaded which is actually good for offices so the company is sure that employees are working whenever they are in the office. In reality, it cannot be avoided for employees to use office personal computers to chat or to download files or songs not related to office duties.

Having said that, it is now time to turn your attention to one of the enemies of the cyber industry these days and that is spyware. Spyware came into advent as a result of the booming internet slash computer industry. For of course there will always be those people who will take advantage of something positive and ride on it in a negative manner.

Sometimes the negative becomes so popular that more and more people will choose to take part in these bad actions. The evil genius behind spyware is a traitor to all its victims who totally unaware of its existence that is not until it messes up a seemingly functional system. There is nothing right at all with collecting information about users without their consent and that wrong thing is what spyware is all about. It is an invasion of privacy in the first place and a totally destructive tool next but then again it is proliferating.

Adware is sort of a spyware spin off wherein online advertisements pop up from out of nowhere and no matter what you press in that dialog box will trigger something to be downloaded into your system without you even knowing you instigated the whole process. There is no way to get out of this sad reality but hopefully the culprits can be tracked down so at least steps can be taken to curb their doings.

What makes the situation worse is that some of these illegal operations are actually tied to legal companies who provide legal programs. Sure there are downloadable adware spyware removals but even these adware spyware removal programs are not one hundred percent effective. Maybe there is one out there that can be very effective but there are so many claiming to be adware spyware removal programs but are con spywares as well.

It is then advisable for everyone concerned to carefully research before finally deciding on what adware spyware removal program to use and once you find the right one stick to that for it is rare to find an adware spyware removal that really works.

An odd sounding word created to lump all malicious software programs, including viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, and other malevolent codes into one cause-your-computer-serious-hurt category.

In 2005, Computer Economics released a report on malware. The good news was that for the first time since 2002, the total worldwide financial losses from malware actually declined to a mere $14.2 billion. The bad news was that the nature of malware was changing from overt threats to more focused, covert attacks. This definitely is not great news for the average computer user just trying to keep up with the hundreds of malware programs that bombard us daily.

It's not an easy task keeping malware out of your computer system. In order to accomplish this, you need a strong antivirus program. One such program that can deliver the goods is ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 6 from Zone Labs. Zone Labs is one of the most trusted brands in Internet Security for good reason. Their product, simply put, kicks serious malware gluteus maximus.

ZoneAlarm has received more review recommendations that any other Internet-security software suite because of its superb firewall and antivirus protection. It blocks pop-up ads, protects against identify theft and provides adequate spam filters that are flexible. It even beats the market leader, Norton Internet Security, which is often criticized for excessive system drag.

Its newest version includes these additional features:

Triple Defense Firewall to prevent spyware from sending your information across the Internet. It also makes your computer invisible to anyone on the Net.

Smart Defense Advisor which can automatically adjust your security settings for maximum protection against the latest virus and spyware outbreaks.

Advanced Identify and Privacy Protection to prevent your personal data from leaving your computer without your approval.

The bonus for the average user who cringes at the idea of setting-up one of these systems is that the interface is easier to understand and use in comparison to most if its competitors. If you choose to venture beyond the out-of-the-box default settings, and install a more elaborate filtering, know that this will require some additional time to set up on your part.

Overall, ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite is a user-friendly, comprehensive security solution that will have your computer safe from Internet hazards and cyber criminals within minutes of installation.

It is essential for the reader to understand and appreciate that there is no such thing as a secure operating system or web browser. While the use of security suites and other complementing products can significantly reduce your risks, they are not magic wands that you can wave to eliminate 100% of your risk. Any product claiming they can do this should be viewed with great skepticism.

With that being said, let's talk computer security and security suites. There are numerous ways in which the security of your computer can be breached. The most common threats come from worms, viruses, Trojans, phishing, hackers and crackers. Potential security breaches can come in the form of downloading unfamiliar email attachments, being monitored by spyware, maliciously attacked by malware, or probed through port scanning.

Dshield.org (www.dshield.org), a non-profit company, functions as a "dominating attach correlation engine with worldwide coverage". In short, they work with people and companies to track, among other things, port scanning violations. Port scanning involves a person (referred to as a hacker or cracker) who attempts to break into you computer through the open ports in your system. Once an open port is located, the individual attempts to collect your personal data or install a malware program into you computer. On average, Dshield.org logs over 1.1 billion reported attempts of port scanning each month. What is even scarier is that this is just based on their program participants. You can imagine how many more incidents are occurring each month to the general population of computer users.

Dshield.org also reports on survival time. Survival time refers to how long it will take before an unpatched PC is attacked or infected. Below is a snapshot of their current operating system breakdown:

Current OS Breakdown

Category % Adjusted Survival Time
Windows 27.0000 128 min
Unix 0.5000 3648 min
Application 3.0000 1203 min
P2P 1.5000 1591 min
Backdoor 0.5000 5432 min
Source: Dshield.org - Survival Time History (11/8/05)

In short, if you have a Windows-based operating system and an unpatched PC, you will be attacked or infected in a little over 2 hours. When looked at in these terms, securing your computer becomes a mission.

Here are a few easy steps you can take to immediately protect your computer.

1. Don't run unfamiliar programs on your computer.
It sounds like common sense, but many of the most prominent attacks have involved spyware and email attachment worms such as Bagle and Netsky. If you don't recognize the sender, don't download its attachments.

2. Don't allow unrestricted physical access to your computer.
If you have sensitive or proprietary information on your computer, allowing other employees or family members to use your computer can lead to potential breaches in your computer's security.

3. Don't use weak passwords.
Use passwords which are difficult for someone to figure out. People frequently use the names of children, pets, anniversary dates, or birthdays. Because there seems to be a password needed for everything, it is not uncommon to see many people using the same password for everything. Big mistake! The use of only one password provides a hacker with easy access to a smorgasbord of personal information. If you have to write your passwords down, it is best not to leave them on a post-it, attached to the screen of your computer. You may chuckle at the absurdity, but it happens more than you think.

4. Don't forget to regularly patch your operating system and other applications.
Many industry experts believe that most network security attacks would be stopped if computer users would just keep their computers updated with patches and security fixes. Too often, we forget to do this on a regular basis. Remember that every day, new viruses, worms and Trojans are being created and distributed. They are looking for the weaknesses in your computer system. Having outdated software is basically the same as holding the door open and inviting them in for a visit.

5. Don't forget to make regular backups of important data
Always keep a copy of important files on removable media such as floppy/ZIP disks or recordable CD-ROM disks. Store the backups in a location separate from the computer.

In most cases, Windows desktop and screen-saver passwords provides adequate protection for normal security concerns. However, if you feel more comfortable taking additional security measures consider obtaining a comprehensive security suite.

Selecting a Antivirus Software
The next question is how do you pick the best product for your needs? You start by asking yourself a series of questions. Do you need password protection for individual files, your desktop, a network, or to block someone's access to the Internet? Is your computer used only by you or do multiple users have access to the computer? How many users in total do you expect on your computer? What are your system requirements? How much do you want to spend?

Once you are able to answer these questions, you can begin to research which security suite will best meet your needs. Product reviews and user statements provide a great starting point. PCMagaine (www.pcmag.com), Zdnet.com (www.zdnet.com), and Consumer Reports (www.consumerreports.org) are just a few informative sites that offer research on various computer software products.

There are numerous security suites available on the market. Take the time to choose the one that meets your specific needs. As a starting point, we've listed a couple of the more popular programs:

1. Kaspersky Personal Security Suite
Description: A comprehensive protection program package designed to guard against worms, viruses, spyware, adware and other malicious programs. The program offers five pre-defined security levels and is convenient for mobile users. System requirements: Window 98/2000/XP; Internet Explore 5.0 or higher, Memory: minimum of 64 MB RAM, 100 MB free on hard drive.

2. Shield Deluxe 2005
Description: This program provides protection from viruses, adware, spyware, and privacy threats while using very low system resources. Additionally, the maker, PC Security Shield offers ongoing free technical support. System requirements: Windows 98 or higher, WinNT, WinXP, WinME; Internet Explorer 5.1 or higher, Memory: 32MB ram or higher, 65 MB free disk space.

* Once done, a dialog box will appear, indicating that the data recovery process is finished. Click OK.
* IncrediMail will auto-restart to complete the data recovery process.
Outlook Email and Other Data Recovery
* Select File | Import and Export… from the Outlook menu.
* In the drop-down menu that appears, select Import from another program or file.
* Click Next.
* Run your mouse over the Personal Folder File (PST) to highlight it.
* Click the Next button again.
* Using the Browse button, select the backup copy of the PST file you want to recover from your backup location.
* On the dialog box, place a check mark on the box that says Replace duplicates with items imported to start the data recovery process.
* Click Next.
* Once the data recovery process is done, click Finish.
Outlook Express Email Data Recovery
Customizing your computer is extremely simple, especially at the point of sale. Many manufacturers and computer dealers can add on special types of computer accessories that will make your computer run quicker, handle power hungry intensive applications and look great. Here are some tips.

Many people usually upgrade the amount of RAM and hard drive memory in their computer. Most computer companies try to skimp a little when they sell you a computer in order to keep the price lower. Two things that can definitely make your computer much faster and practical is RAM and hard drive memory. RAM is random access memory that can help your computer handle applications and computer operations on the fly. Extra hard drive memory can always be used for large video files or thousands of music files. These upgrades are usually less than $50 each and are well worth the expense.

If you are a PC gamer then you will most definitely add a video graphics card. Graphics cards are necessary to play complex, quick action games. Many computers come with video graphics cards, but lack all of the bells and whistles and offer less than satisfactory performance. An upgraded video card can cost you between $50 and $400 depending on what you need it for.

If you want your computer to look great, you can always customize it with a new computer case or neon lights. Who wants a beige computer case sitting on their desk? Not only is it ugly, but ancient looking. Today, you can make your computer look great for only a few bucks. You can even add neon lights such as blue or red to make your computer look alien. So if you want a new computer with the components that fit your lifestyle and use, customize it.

The history of computer operating systems is relatively new. Early versions of computers didn't run on any kind of operating system which made them difficult to operate for the general user. The user had sole use of the machine and would arrive armed with programs and data usually on punched paper tape. The program would be loaded into the machine and the machine would set to work until it was completed or the computer crashed.

Over the years, operating systems have evolved to more user-friendly software programs that make it easier for anyone to use a computer in a more efficient way. As machines became more powerful, the necessity for some type of program to manage the data and the processes became more and more important.

One of the first operating systems that came about originated at Microsoft with the invention of MS-DOS. This operating system called for users to enter commands in to make a system perform certain tasks. While it wasn't for everyone, it was still a step forward into computer technology.

The next step in the history of operating systems came from Apple Corporation with the advent of Mac OS. The Macintosh operating system was the basis for a lot of the operating systems we see on computers today. This operating system was the first to introduce graphical user interfaces (GUI) that made navigating the personal computer much easier for any user.

Using Mac OS as a model, Microsoft began re-vamping their own operating system eventually releasing the first version of Microsoft Windows which also used GUI technology to make it easier to use a computer. As user requirements became more demanding, Microsoft developed more and more operating system versions to make the computer more efficient.

While Mac OS was the basis for Windows, the latter has certainly taken over the market in popularity. The history of Windows as an operating system is certainly much more involved than Mac. The many versions of Windows - each improving on the other - has made computer technology evolve into a science that is ever-growing and ever-changing.

Even though computer technology is a relatively new phenomenon, the history of operating systems has a long past. As different versions of the two biggies - Windows and Mac OS - come out, a new page is written in the computer history "books". Just as the history of operating systems has evolved over the years, it will continue to evolve. Programmers will make operating systems better and better and make our computer usage easier and easier.

PDA stands for personal digital assistant and although they have been around for a decade, they are better than ever and constantly change to integrate with the newest technology.

Today you can buy PDA's which include mobile phones, online capability, color screens, huge storage capacity and Bluetooth capability. If you are a road warrior or need information fast and easy PDA's are the perfect tools.

For people that are looking to communicate with work no matter where they are, there are PDA's with email capability that can send and receive emails with any one over the internet fast and easy similar to Blackberries. Because PDA's have large storage devices, you can usually hold lots of documents, phone numbers and even media files such as music, digital photos and video.

PDA's are relatively affordable and can be purchased for less than $100 for basic models and up to $500 for models with all the bells and whistles. However, most PDA's full of features usually cost less than $300. If you are looking for a great mobile device that you can use anywhere for almost anything, look into PDA's.

Cool isn't it? Well, it might be cool to have that stuff downloaded and installed in your computer but you'd better be careful there. That stuff could be one of the many spyware.

What really is spyware? Any malicious software that is designed to covertly gather user's personal information or intercepts the computer's operation without the user's consent is called spyware. There are misconceptions between spyware and adware. Adware is the term used to refer to any software which displays advertisement with or without user's consent. Spyware collects information and sends it out through a background internet connection without user's knowledge. There is a more malicious version of spyware that can try to intercept user's passwords or even credit card numbers. Spyware also silently tracks and gathers user's information and data for advertisement purposes. The functionality and form may differ depending on the intentions of the vendor.

How this spyware get installed in your computer? A common way to become a victim of spyware is to download peer-to-peer file sharing applications. There are freeware and shareware programs such as Limewire and GoZilla that has spyware. Unlike virus, spyware does not usually self-replicate. However, virus and spyware both exploit and infect computers for the same purpose which is for commercial gain.

Spyware exists as an independent executable programs which means it has an ability to read cookies, snoop other applications, monitor keystrokes or scan files on hard drive. It can even install other spyware without your knowledge. Spyware can affect the system performance and stability of your computer system such as, disk usage, can interfere network traffic which causes difficulty in connecting to the internet.

If your computer is infected with this spyware, how are you going to remove spyware and make sure no more spyware that can be installed in your computer? Spyware is a costly problem.

You can manually remove spyware but this can be very difficult and can be very complicated in searching for the hidden components that has been installed in your computer. Some of these programs got to great lengths to hide on user's system and you might still require assistance.

There are free Anti Spyware and Spyware removal programs that are designed to safely remove or block spyware. The two most popular anti spyware softwares are Lavasoft's Ad-ware and Spybot. These two have both gained their popularity as effective tool than can remove and intercept spyware. There are recently anti spyware programs that can help remove and protect your computer from spyware. These are the Spy Sweeper of WebRoot and X-cleaner from Xblock. There are also the earlier versions of these anti spyware programs such as, SpywareBlaster, GIANT Antispyware which has been recently acquired by Microsoft, PC Tools' Spyware Doctor and Anti-Spyware by Trend Micro.

There are also some released numbers of suspected fake anti spyware programs that does not remove installed spyware. These fake anti spyware are suspected to install spyware in your computer instead of removing them. If you have used any of these suspected fake anti-spyware programs it would be better if you rescan your computer for installed spyware using those reliable, credible and tested anti spyware that can really remove spyware.

Some used firewall and web proxies to block access to sites that are known to install spyware as an approach to blocking spyware. Other uses other web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox.

Exchanging of vital information in the Internet is very common nowadays; as a result there are also malicious people that would try to steal this information for their own gain. It is best to combat yourself and your computer against them.

Imagine this scenario. You're working on your computer for a big project. It's due in a few days. But your system locks up. You tried to reboot. But the computer won't even start. Wonder what happened? You got it right. You just suffer a disastrous hard drive failure! Or, maybe you've encountered this situation. You delete some files in your computer only to find out that you've deleted something really important and urgent.

In cases like this you can do three things: panic, use data recovery software or you can go to a data recovery expert. Panic is never productive. Use of data recovery software might, if you know how. What data recovery software does is go through your file system, find all the files that have been marked as deleted and offer to recover them. You should save the recovered files to someplace other than your hard drive. Otherwise, you run the risk of overwriting other files you may want to get back. The second option is sound if you just happen to delete important files.

But hard drive failure is another thing. A data recovery service from a data recovery expert might just be what you need. Computer data retrieval is an integral part in today's computer-oriented market. Every computer user knows that numerous threats hound the computer industry causing disruptions to data retrieval. Accidental formats, virus problems, software malfunction, file/directory deletion or sabotage - all of these are potential threat to data retrieval. Experiencing hard drive crash or data loss disaster is not uncommon. This is where data recovery services come in.

Data safety cannot be compromised. Lost data can cause severe financial problems to a corporation. Companies spends anywhere between $100,000 to $1,000,0000 in total per year for desktop-oriented disasters (both hard and soft costs) according to the 7tn Annual ICSA Lab's Virus Prevalence Survey last March 2002.

Several companies comprised of data recovery experts exist in the market today to offer data recovery services. Some of these data recovery experts offer a compete solution of file data recovery services from software to lost data recovery programs. Others provide data recovery expert information on Data Recovery Services from hard disk drives, tapes, zip disks, CD-Rom, flash cards and other storage media.

Utilizing data recovery services from data recovery experts usually come as a last resort. But they do not come cheap. Data recovery software like, say Symantec's, could cost something like $39.95. A data recovery expert could charge from $250 to $3,500 on their data recovery services.

Each data recovery services have a unique approach in solving the data recovery problem. But usually, the priority is to get the damaged drive running again. Data recovery service requires unique set of skills from the data recovery experts. A full knowledge of hard drive architecture and electronic circuitry are required. Data recovery experts must also have lots of innovation, experience and perseverance most of the time. Data recovery service is often seen as an impossible and risky task by many. That is why, it is necessary to hire data recovery experts only in performing such delicate tasks. One should insist on the best data recovery service.

But data recovery services cannot perform miracles. A massive head crash in the drive usually mean it's gone for good. That is why, when massive hard disk failure occur - sit back, relax and weigh your options.
