Instead of staying home for Dasara this year, we decided to go on a short vacation and stay at Anandavana. It was not an easy decision to not stay home and miss our an annual ritual of arranging Dasara dolls every year at home. But with no other holidays aligning for all of us in the family, we had to bite the bullet. I zeroed in on Anandavana Homestay for two reasons – proximity and food. Anandavana Homestay is nestled amidst lush coffee and pepper plantations near Belur Basavanahalli, few kilometers away from Somawarpet. This beautiful homestay offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

One of the biggest plus points of Anandavana is its location. Despite it is less than 40 kilometers away from Madikeri, it is hidden away from all the tourist traffic. The homestay is just 800 meters off the Kushalnagar-Somwarpet highway. Spread across six acres of coffee estate, you are surrounded by the melodious chirping of birds all through the day.

The homestay has four spacious rooms, that can accommodate up to 16 people. Each room has two king-size beds and an attached bathroom. The rooms are well-maintained, clean, and equipped with all the necessary amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. The place has a Wi-Fi connection. Since I didn’t carry my laptop, I cannot comment on how practical it is to have a workation. Speaking of connectivity, only Jio network works in the vicinity and no other mobile networks. In few places within the estate I could get patchy Airtel signal once in a while.

When we arrived at Anandavana around noon. Guddu Kamath, the ever smiling caretaker, welcomed us at the entrance. After we freshened up, he gave us a quick tour of the place, and we headed to lunch. The homestay serves only vegetarian food – a combination of both South and North Indian cuisine. All the vegetables used for cooking and fruits served to the guests are grown within the estate premises. I had requested an early dinner for my parents (around 5:30-6 PM), they happily obliged to prepare and serve dinner early in the evening for them.

Anandavana is best suited for ‘do-nothing’ vacation. You can go on long walks within the estate and along the country roads. Though I had planned to do that exactly, the plan changed. We decided to visit nearby places in the first half of the day and rest post lunch. During our four days stay, we managed to visit Harangi dam, Chiklihole Reservoir, Kote Betta, and Abbimatta falls. If you are looking for a place to have dance parties, music, and other adventures, unfortunately Anandavana is not the right place.

Anandavana is about 10 kilometers from Somwarpet, the nearest town. If you have your own transport, there are two options to get there. One, via Kunigal, Channarayapattna, Shanivarasante. Two, via Mysore, Hunsur and Kushalnagar. I took the first route as I wanted to avoid the Dasara crowd heading to Mysore during the holidays. In case you prefer public transport, there are daily buses plying from Bengaluru to Somwarpet.

Anandavana Homestay is a place where you can truly unwind, reconnect with nature, and create memories. It offers a perfect blend of serenity, comfort, and good food. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway, keep Anandavana as one of your options to stay.

“Quick, you’ve got 30 minutes to freshen-up, have some evening snacks. You’ll be on time to reach Kyatanamakki to witness the sunset in time”, announced our host. It was an order almost than an announcement from them. It was almost five in the evening by the time we reached our home-stay near Kalasa. After driving for more than 250 kilometers on the twisty roads of western ghats along with visits to Kukke Subrahmanya and Dharmasthala, all I needed was a quick snack and a cozy bed to retire for the day. While the tired body was reluctant, the mind started its games – “You’ve come all the way here, why miss the chance?”, “Don’t know when it will be our next visit to this region next” etc. The Neer-dose and the joni-bella filled much needed energy for us. And just when I was about to enter our car, we were in for a surprise – “you need a jeep to get there, you can’t take your car”. That should have sent an alarming bell to my brain, but I ignored!

The journey on the 4-wheel drive jeep started – the first 6-7 KMs was on a proper tarred road. After passing the Horanadu Annapoorneshwari temple (temple visit was reserved for next day), the bumpy ride started – calling that a bone-rattling ride is an understatement. There was no point in being seated in the jeep, we were kept thrown in all directions. The bumpy jeep reminded me of the adventurous bike ride to the top of Herur hills. But that ride was a distant second and not even close to this roller-coaster. While we adults were struggling to sit tight, for kids (my daughter and niece) it became a joyride. They thought we were playing passing the ball and them being the balls. After what felt like eternity, the road (if one can call it a road) became smoother much to our relief, and we reached the Kyatanamakki sunset point or also called as Mugilpete / Mugilupete because of few Kannada movies shot here.

The beautiful view and the breeze made us forget the jolting ride. The beautiful western ghats range was in front of us, and we were in time to witness the daily magic by the Sun god. After clicking some photos around, we settled in once as the Sun started to hide behind the mountains. With all eyes towards the west, we sat down, soaking in the mild sun rays. ‘I’m hungry’ announced my daughter – priorities, you see! Luckily, our hosts were courteous to pack us some fruits and snacks, otherwise our sunset plan would’ve got cut short.

The drama unfolding in front of us made us speechless and were at loss for words. Though a daily routine, it makes us wonder how we have lost in our jostling everyday life, living a rat’s race. Within a few minutes, the Sun went hiding behind the mountains, and it was time for us to get back from Kyatanamakki – back to the inescapable race. The happy thoughts of witnessing the sunset somewhat made the bumpy ride a bit less uncomfortable. Within an hour we reached the home-stay and I lost count how many times I thanked the hosts for forcing us to go to the sunset point.

The big sign board on the side of the road announced that we were at Meenmutty falls. Except for a narrow country road there were no other roads from the main road to take us to the falls. Looking at the big gang that we were, the shopkeepers got busy attracting the customers towards their shops. We leaned our cycles against the bamboo sticks supporting the shelters of the shop and got busy with gulping down the masala buttermilk. Soon our packed lunch arrived along with the support vehicle – lunch and another round of gulping down the buttermilk ensued.

We had two options to reach our destination – either cycle down to the falls on the bumpy road or walk down. Considering how much our bottoms had taken the beating, the ride on the uneven road was almost reaching hell and coming back. That meant a slow walk on the country road. The trees on either side was blessing in disguise. They provided the much-needed shade on a summer afternoon. The gurgling sound of the falls increased as we approached the water fall into a big roar. After navigating through the twisty single hiking path, there it was the ‘Meenmutty falls’. I had missed visiting the place during my last visit to Wayanad. Back in 2007, Meenmutty was slightly off the grid from the places that we had planned to visit that time. Finally, here I was!

The last leg of the walk to the falls included going down a steep incline – that also meant one has to climb up again. Though the mind was pushing me towards the water, the shaky knees were not listening to my brain commands. After a lot of deliberation, I decided to stay put and not to venture down to the water (I still regret the decision!). I sat down on one of the rocks taking in the beauty of the falls, soaking in the occasional drifting mist. The extra time off the water meant to play around and experiment with my camera. The decision of not getting into the waterfalls meant breaking the tradition of not taking bath under the waterfall I visit – more compelling reason for me to visit the place again

PS: The visit to Meenmutty was on day one of the weekend cycling ride I did in Wayanad way back in April 2010.

Friday evening and I had no plans for the weekend. Just when I was running out of options on what to do, I got a message “I’m planning to hike Kabbaludurga again. Do you want to join?”. This was about 8-9 months after our adventure at the small but mighty Kabbaludurga. I jumped in (who says no to a hike/trek!!) and another friend decided to join us. While the last visit was just at the beginning of the monsoon, this it time summer was approaching.

In just a matter of 8 to 9 months, there were a lot of differences in the surroundings. The temple and another small shrine at the top had got a fresh coat of painting (we were there after the annual fair this time), a lot less green and warmer than the last time. Most scary part was the quarrying at the foothill that was at full swing. A huge area of the rock had disappeared!

Here are some of the photos from both the first visit and the second one.

In case if you are planning to hike Kabbalduga, try to avoid the monsoon period. The rocky surface of the hillock becomes very slippery and makes a scary adventure for you guys.

“Are you sure this is the hill we are supposed to climb?”, those were the first words uttered by a friend when we approached Kabbaldurga. “Let’s climb a smaller one instead. This one is huge.”, quipped another one. Though not a huge one, the rocky hill of Kabbaldurga looked much bigger because of all the small hills surrounding it and the steepness too. The view from a far off distance give an impression as if there is a gathering of hillocks happening and Kabbaludurga being their leader ready to address them. Finding the starting point of the hike wasn’t difficult, even before we could slow down the car and ask, the locals just pointed directions for us. Our ascent started after parking the vehicles close to the foothill.

The weather perfect and tailor-made for the hike – breezy and cloudy, much-needed cover from the hot Sun. After crossing few fields on the way to the foot of the hill, the path becomes a gradual climb. And then after few hundred steps suddenly you feel you are facing a wall. The climb in few sections of the paths are steep and tricky, there is no support to grab while climbing – no trees, branches, bushes or plants. Luckily though, there are handrails and crude steps carved into the rocks for support in couple of steep sections. Few sections are a bit challenging for people who are slightly bit afraid of heights. I had a good time playing the role of motivator to encourage one of my friends to complete the climb. The effort was nothing short of dragging him from midway to the top.

Kabbal Durga is a small rocky hill near Kanakapura and is about 70 to 80 KMs from Bangalore (depending on from where you are starting). The place gets the name because of the temple dedicated to Goddess Kabbalamma on top of the hill and from the village named ‘Kabbalu’. Kabbaldurga gets flocked by pilgrims during festive seasons and by trek enthusiasts over weekends. The climb is short but steep one, which can be completed in an hour maximum. Kabbaludurga is a good choice for guys who are new to trekking/hiking and for people want to spend a day away from the bustling city life.

View from the top

Cold breeze welcomed us as we reached the peak. We spent more time roaming around at the top than the time we took to climb. The breakfast we had earlier at Vasu hotel in Kanakapura was long gone. Luckily we had bananas and snacks, that disappeared quickly. After spending more than an hour at the top, we started our descent. As of the steep climb down was not enough God offered us an additional dose of adventure – it started pouring. With water on the rocks and now tracks other than them, it is a real adventure to get down. We sat there soaking in the rain for sometime – there was no option in that open area except for walking all the way back to the Kabbalamma temple. As the rain stopped, our adventure started – take one step ahead and slide two-three steps as a bonus. Few of the guys decided to sit down and slide down instead. Luckily for us the Sun came out soon from the hiding and after about 10-15 mins the ricks dried up. But it was still an adventure climbing down the steep slope.

Abode of goddess Kabbalamma

As if the adventure of slipping and sliding was not enough, we had a bonus round waiting for us at the end. The moment we finished our hike and walking in the middle of a field, an angry buffalo decided to charge us. Next second all five of us were running for our lives everywhere. Surprisingly the most heaviest and slowest guy during the hike outrun us all – his response was he had to run at least faster than the slowest of the gang, but didn’t who was the slowest and decided to beat everyone.

There are a lot of small hills that are easy half day hikes around Kanakapura – Achalu betta, Bhimana Kindi to name a couple. But, Kabbaldurga or Kabbaludurga has to be one of the craziest and funniest hikes I’ve done so far. To quote one of the many funny one-liners that day – “If at all I build a house on top of this hill, I’ll name it as ‘On the rocks'” – the same guy who outrun us all

What are some nice places to visit around Pune? “Lonavala”, that’s the answer you get from nine out of ten people you ask in Pune. Having heard about the place from many of my friends and how it had become commercialized (or rather ‘ruined’ by we the people – if I’ve to be a bit harsh) – Lonavala was the last place I wanted to visit. Ironically that was the very first place I visited – but to my defense it was on our way to our destination Koraigad, a small hill after Lonavala.

We were there very early, before the weekend crowd had woken up from slumber, even the shopkeepers had not arrived yet. Though the views were magnificent, the mess we had created was glaring back at us. Trash, plastic bottles and bags, broken glasses – it was nothing more than a mirror telling us what we are! We left quickly towards the destination, but there was no escaping the place during the return journey. We left quickly as the people started trickling in.

We were back to the same place in about 5 hours, and the scene that we witnessed was horrifying! If what I saw in the morning was a crime scene, later it was the crime in progress. A friend had commented saying what Nandi hills for you guys in Bengalooru is Lonavala for Mumbai and Pune. He was and is right – there are plenty of similarities, and the harsh truth is we are murdering these beautiful places.

Though I did visit Lonavala, I don’t think I’m going to recommend anyone to visit this place. But if you still want to visit the place, go on a weekday – you will get some relief from the weekend mob.

What can you expect on a Saturday in April when you go out cycling in Wayanad? Summer, Sun high up in the sky, scorching heat, steep uphills. To negate all these we had Wayanad, Tea estates, waterfalls, buttermilk and our beloved cycles to ride down crazy downhills after the steep climbs. I was on a mission to ride my longest distance (at that time!) over a span of one and half days.

I was not alone, I had another 30 plus cyclists who were ready for the adventure. The plan for the weekend was to tackle the rolling terrains of Wayanad – cycling amidst the tea estates, visit a couple of waterfalls and take in all the beauty from the countless number of vantage points.

Though we were supposed to start our adventure early in the morning immediately after breakfast, thanks to border crossing bureaucracy, our cycles arrived late to Sulthan Bathery. It was almost close to noon when we started our ride. Day one included a winding route covering about 75KMs with lunch stop at Meenmutti waterfalls and end point at Kalpetta. With high spirits, we sped off towards Pattavayal. It was a first for me, crossing a state border from Kerala to Tamil Nadu on a cycle. After the initial zipping fast on the state highway that had moderate traffic, we turned right at Pattavayal. A smaller and scenic road with not much traffic meant we could have the entire road for ourselves. We crossed back to Kerala (that’s two boarder crossing in a day :)) and headed towards our lunch point – Meenmutti falls via Ambalamoola and Kayyunni.

It was a tough walk to the Meenmutti waterfalls post lunch – it’s not easy to walk with a heavy stomach and wobbly legs. I had to watch the falls from the view point – though the brain said yes, legs were not ready to climb down to the foot of the waterfalls. The second leg of day one started after an hour’s break at the waterfalls. The race was on between the Sun and the cyclists – we managed to reach Kalpetta around 7. I retired to bed early after a nice dinner, dreaming about the next day’s adventure.

Day two started as per the plan without any delays – we were welcomed by a thick blanket of mist as we rode out of Kalpetta towards Lakkidi view point. It felt as if we time traveled overnight and jumped right to winter. The mist and the cold air kept us shivering as we approached the view point. A quick stop at Lakkidi and we took a U-turn back towards Kalpetta. A short stop near Pookoot lake for breakfast and the journey continued towards Soochipara.

The tall mountains were around us as we rode on. The majestic Chembra peak stood out and tall watching us ambling, huffing and puffing towards our destination. It was very much needed to take dip under the cold waters of Soochipara falls to give some relief to the muscles. The adventure ended with the mission of riding 125KMs in one & half days accomplished. I settled into the cozy bus seat as the long journey back home began.

PS: This was my first long ride I did way back in April 2010 with ‘Cycling and More’.

One of the most common question I get and equally difficult to answer is – ‘Which one is your favorite destination or trip so far?’. Now that we are just past the ‘Tenth year mark’, here is a listicle of ten of my memorable trips since payaniga came in existence. It was indeed a difficult task to shortlist these ten.

Motorbike ride to Goa: My first ever multi-day bike trip, that set the tone for many more bike trips that followed. The longest trip that I rode covering close to 1500 KMs in 4 days.

A crazy attempt to conquer Kumara Parvatha: And till date this is the only trek I had to return without completing. And still I am yet to trek KP.

A call from the Kumoan hills: My first ever visit to Uttarakhand and an unforgettable dip in the cold waters of river Kosi

A road trip across the UK – from Swindon to Scotland and back: And we searched for Nessie monster in vain.

Waltz in Wayanad: The one which initiated many of those cycling expeditions.

The taste of snow storm: What was supposed to be a fun funicular train ride turned out an adventurous trip in snow filled Cairngorms Mountain.

An unplanned road trip crisscrossing Karnataka: A completely unplanned trip with only plan was to reach Goa and return after an overnight stay took us to Gudavi during our journey.

Mist, Mountains and Mandalapatti: Another adventure out on the cycle exploring the mountains of Madikeri in monsoon.

Back in the Sharavathi valley: But this time on a cycle and a completely unsupported three-day ride.

To the Arabian Sea: A lazy, fun-filled vacation with the family on the sea-side.
