Palm Pre Apps http://palm.preapplications.net Just another WordPress weblog Mon, 06 Sep 2010 11:50:07 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.0 Facebook – Palm Pre apps http://palm.preapplications.net/facebook http://palm.preapplications.net/facebook#comments Tue, 17 Nov 2009 05:39:11 +0000 palmpreapps http://palm.preapplications.net/?p=886 The Facebook app for the Palm Pre is here. It is an official app, but it remains a little barebones for now, but updates are in the works and should roll out steadily. The app features the live main feed, but seems to ignore any filters you might have applied – so you’ll still receive updates from feeds you’ve categorically excluded. Everything else works very well, and fits nicely into the WebOS interface. You can view and share photographs and updates, and like or unlike status updates from your friends.

Links open in new Browser card views, and YouTube videos will automatically launch the corresponding WebOS app. You can manually refresh the feeds. Thankfully the app is pretty light on battery usage, hopefully additional updates will still maintain this excellent feature. Right now, you can follow your friends’ updates, send out your own, and share photos. Joining and creating groups, chat, and other features are yet to be seen. It’s a functional and well-designed start. Update: it has since received a number of excellent features, making it a well-rounded Palm Pre app.

findMYcar http://palm.preapplications.net/findmycar http://palm.preapplications.net/findmycar#comments Thu, 05 Nov 2009 11:50:49 +0000 palmpreapps http://palm.preapplications.net/?p=881 This aptly-named app for the Palm Pre helps you find your car by allowing you to “pin” your car’s GPS position. You can than ask it to map out the route to your car from your current location. It doesn’t have a section for noting the parking level though, and obviously that can’t be discovered by GPS. The paid version comes with an alarm for the parking meter and a BAC calculator. You can also dial AAA services with a single tap, which is a very nice touch but doesn’t really fit in with the app’s goal of helping you find your car (unless AAA has gotten around to locating cars).

The interface is quite nice but shows needless information such as latitude and longitude from the GPS reading (though that information may come in useful when one needs to check if the GPS radio is working alright – hopefully never). The interface also lets you email or text your car’s location and your current location, another feature that doesn’t quite fit with the app’s overall goal. An extra feature or two never harmed anyone however, and the app is quite useful and well-designed overall – a useful addition to your portfolio.

MoreStocks http://palm.preapplications.net/morestocks http://palm.preapplications.net/morestocks#comments Thu, 29 Oct 2009 15:19:15 +0000 palmpreapps http://palm.preapplications.net/?p=876 MoreStocks is a high-quality and powerful stocks and financial markets application for the Palm Pre. You can track specific US and international stocks and indices and create, manage, and follow your own portfolio on the app. Instruments can be added by symbol name or company name. The portfolio screen shows the full instrument name, the symbol, current price, and absolute points and percentage changes. You can refresh for up-to-date date and numbers are available intraday.

Needless to say, you need an active cellular data or Wi-Fi connection to use this app. Charting is surprisingly good and quick. You can see trading charts for intraday as well as longer periods easily. Analyzing charts shouldn’t be something you do on a mobile device, but this is pretty much as good as it gets. Notifications integrate well with WebOS and interface is clean and simple. Overall, this is a useful stock market app that covers all the basics and does it in a polished and easy-to-use manner.

You can configure a profile and fitness goals and the app will prompt you and let you see how far you’ve progressed against your goals. Charting and graphing is excellent on this app, and a lot of the information is presented in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. The interface is easy-to-use and the app comes with the ability to export all your data if you wish to crunch numbers on your computer. Overall, this is an impressive health & fitness application and covers most basic needs in this domain.

French-English Dictionary http://palm.preapplications.net/french-english-dictionary http://palm.preapplications.net/french-english-dictionary#comments Mon, 26 Oct 2009 15:49:21 +0000 palmpreapps http://palm.preapplications.net/?p=865 The French-English Dictionary app on the Palm Pre is one of a series of different language dictionaries released by the same developers. It is a paid app on the Palm App Catalog and requires a working cellular data or Wi-Fi signal for all its functions. In addition to working very well as a dictionary in both directions (English to French and vice versa), the app offers some very useful functions. First, you can see verb conjugations for both languages. So if you’re working hard to describe something beyond the present tense and first person singular – which will be quite often if you travel – you can look up the right conjugations with this app.

Second, there’s a separate function for numbers. This can be very handy when describing dates (years especially) and large numbers. Once again, you can type in the numbers and see the resulting words in both French or English. The final option on the bottom menu bar lets you see a history of your searches on the app. Words within the app are linked to the various functions – so you can tap on a word and it’ll throw up a menu which includes the option to conjugate that word. A list of popular and useful phrases would have completed this otherwise very comprehensive and useful dictionary application on the Palm Pre smartphone.

Twee http://palm.preapplications.net/twee http://palm.preapplications.net/twee#comments Mon, 26 Oct 2009 11:56:55 +0000 palmpreapps http://palm.preapplications.net/?p=861 Twee is the much awaited Twitter client for the Palm Pre smartphone. It offers a unique and interesting interface and a range of features that rivals its closest competitor: Tweed. Most features on Twee are a single tap away. You can see timelines, followers, following and trends in addition to direct messages all via a bottom menu bar. Notifications are fully integrated and work well the WebOS flow. The app is relatively fast, and unlike Spaz doesn’t take as long to load the first screen on launch.

Palm Pre Apps - Twee Palm Pre Apps - Twee

Uploading images and sending location information in your tweets is easy and straightforward. The interface is functional and an improvement on Spaz, but definitely not as clean as Tweed’s. Icons still need some attention and polish, but are very usable as is. The app uses a dark background with light text throughout, which some people might prefer. Twee is relatively responsive and quick with showing new views. Overall, Twee for the Palm Pre is a healthy competitor to Tweed, and offers a full range of Twitter features that will leave even power-users quite satisfied.

FlashCards on the Palm Pre http://palm.preapplications.net/flashcards http://palm.preapplications.net/flashcards#comments Sat, 24 Oct 2009 09:09:56 +0000 palmpreapps http://palm.preapplications.net/?p=853 FlashCards for WebOS and the Palm Pre is an excellent and user-friendly implementation of flash cards on the Palm Pre. There’s a Lite version for you to try out before you purchase the full version. The app is instantly useful because of the huge database of flash cards already available right now from the app’s website as well as external resources. Flash cards for this Palm Pre app can be created with HTML, audio, images, hints, reverse mode, and even multiple-choice formats. You can store and categorize many different sets on this app.

Palm Pre Apps - FlashCards Palm Pre Apps - FlashCards

The interface is simple and very uncluttered – leaving you with the cards and nothing more. The white background and notepaper design go well with the whole notion of flash cards. FlashCards tracks your statistics for you. You can mark cards as learnt or go into reverse mode by hitting the menu butter. You can also edit cards while viewing them. You can browse and add flash card sets from within the app itself, and you can pick from a range of editor picks and user submitted sets. FlashCards is a fantastic and useful addition to the Palm App Catalog.

Quick Contacts http://palm.preapplications.net/quick-contacts http://palm.preapplications.net/quick-contacts#comments Sat, 24 Oct 2009 08:55:39 +0000 palmpreapps http://palm.preapplications.net/?p=848 Quick Contacts for the Palm Pre is a photo-based contact manager. You can assign photos to your contacts and Quick Contacts will present a grid and page view, as well as launcher placement so you can call or SMS any given contact more quickly. The app lets you set preferred numbers for each contact, which will automatically used when the contact is selected. Picking a contact’s “hot spot” will let you pick between numbers or email addresses. You can reorder your contacts by moving to the list view. For each contact you can select custom backgrounds – making recognition much faster.

Palm Pre Apps - Quick Contacts Palm Pre Apps - Quick Contacts

The motivation behind the app is easy to understand, but any implementation of this concept, even a good one like this one, will suffer from several issues. First, very few people have photographs of all their regular contacts (imagine business associates). That will mean by-passing this app and going through the regular route. Second, the photographs rarely appear as good as the ones in the samples. Overall, if this is something that works for you, Quick Contacts is very well implemented and there’s a lot of customization options to make it work well.

Trapster http://palm.preapplications.net/trapster http://palm.preapplications.net/trapster#comments Mon, 19 Oct 2009 10:24:22 +0000 palmpreapps http://palm.preapplications.net/?p=835 Trapster for WebOS and the Palm Pre brings the popular traffic advanced warning app right to your favorite smartphone. This app runs on a number of platforms and relies on social aggregation of traffic camera, speed traps, and other traffic-related events. Once you download and run this app on your Pre, you’ll be warned well in advance about any speed traps, traffic cameras, and checkpoints on your route. Mapping is fully integrated, so you’ll see all the interesting points marked on a GPS guided map. Warnings are given based on distance from current location as well as the intersection names.

Palm Pre Apps - Trapster Palm Pre Apps - Trapster

Trapster relies on its users to compute a confidence level for each warning. You can hit a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down based on whether any given warning turned out to be true or not. This is then aggregated and displayed. So you’ll see a warning for an intersection with a confidence level of “High” or “Low,” depending on how reliably a trap was detected there. Each warning comes with a color coded icon, so everything is clear right on the map. Everything, including notifications, is fully customizable. This is a powerful and useful tool and definitely raises the game in terms of bringing superior and fundamentally useful functions to your Palm Pre.

Net2Streams http://palm.preapplications.net/net2streams http://palm.preapplications.net/net2streams#comments Mon, 19 Oct 2009 09:56:22 +0000 palmpreapps http://palm.preapplications.net/?p=830 Net2Streams, which comes in Lite and Pro versions, is a streaming radio application for the Palm Pre. The online streaming is quite high quality and includes Shoutcast, and Icecast streams – both of which offer excellent variety and choices in music and stations. You can search Net2Streams by genre, station name, artist and song name. Net2Streams will also store your favorite stations for you.

Palm Pre Apps - Net2Stream Palm Pre Apps - Net2Stream

Shoutcast alone offers tens of thousands of stations to pick from (you’ll need the Pro version of Net2Station to see all of them). Streaming quality is excellent and buffering is good enough that you’ll rarely see any skipping even on a crowded Wi-Fi network such as in your Gym. The interface is high-contrast and usable, but some of the station names can appear obscure because they get cut off after a few words. The app also lets you see how many other uses are listening to any given station, so you can make the call on whether you want to trade-off quality against popularity. Overall, this is a very functional online radio streaming application on the Palm Pre.
