Days before I bought iPhone 3GS, I was still visualizing that I would get a black one. But turn out, my internet finding shows that white iPhone casing doesn’t catch that much finger print and scratches comparing to the classic black colour. Last minute, I changed my mind.

By signing a SingTel’s 2-years iOne phone plan and Broadband on Mobile (BBOM) data plan, I end up spending SGD598 for this 16GB phone. Too bad Starhub still hasn’t sealed the deal bringing in iPhone, or else, I will still support Starhub.

Especially based on my personal experience, Starhub customer service is much friendlier, more responsive than Singtel. No idea iPhone has caused how many existing Starhub and M1 users switching their mobile phone carrier.

Compare to Nokia N97, that’s the nearest phone I can use to compare with recently, I have no problem understanding the user interface of iPhone 3GS. I’m also an iPod Touch user, so the only learning curve will be using the phone, SMS and camera functions.

One of the limitations I don’t like is the lack of users own customized SMS tone! Similar to Mac OS X, wonder why Apple don’t let users have their own customized sound effect.

The obvious difference to my iPod Touch is the speed. The speed of opening browser, loading web pages, open applications are super fast.

I have downloaded 103 free apps from the iTunes App Store within the first day. I guess this is what iPhone users spending their time with the phone.

Few days ago, someone emailed me this well designed comparison chart of Droid vs iPhone and the rest well known next generation smart phones. This chart is not unfamiliar, previously it was prepared by people at BillShrink.com and now they have updated the latest Motorola Droid.

From the chart, I found something interesting. The battery life of the Android phones, HTC Magic and Droid, have the same almost talk time, however HTC Magic is the double of Droid’s standby time.

Giveaway Google Wave Invitations

I have been using Google Wave for almost a month. I met some new friends, having some sort of collaboration on wave. Google Wave to me looks like the combinations of Google Group and forum style. I haven’t really looked into the opportunity of developing widgets or robots for Wave.

Attended the last Singapore Google Technology User Group, found out quite a lot geeks in Singapore still haven’t got their Wave accounts yet.

Recently I got chance to try out Nokia N97 for 2 weeks. Basically it is a trial programme and the purpose is to test out the Nokia Ovi store experience. My last Nokia phone was N6100. So that has been years ago before switching to HTC Smartphone and Sony Ericsson.

Hardware

Hardware wise, I guess nothing much to complain about N97. It comes with a 5 megapixels camera, 640×360px LCD screen. The only complain on the exterior is maybe the weight and dimension. However for me, the size is still within my acceptable range.

Nowadays, it is not difficult for the hardware engineers to put together the best hardware, but the real winner is the one with the best software, from the foundation OS to the front end user’s day-to-day using interface and apps. That’s one of the reasons why a lot Smartphones in the market fail to become the iPhone killer. The phone manufactures just fail to further optimize their products, let users get their best experience. They only keep pushing new exterior design and hardware, thinking to use this to capture new users’ attention.

Pros

One thing I like about N97 is the keypad. Compare to normal touch screen keyboard or T9 keypad, physical QWERTY keyboard is still the best input method for your messages. Besides that, the quality of the 5MP camera is pretty good.

Cons

Few issues I have overcome are that the touch interface of the phone is not so responsive. The reason mainly because N97 is using a resistive touch screen instead of capacitive. Capacitive touch screen would have a more accurate sensor for the touch. But in this case, sometimes I would have to touch the screen twice to get it catch my click. It is a little weird, I found out Nokia all the while didn’t adopt capacitive touch screen in their product line.

Another issue most Smartphone facing is the multiple simultaneous background running applications. My N97 had become none responsive at all after I ran too many apps running on the Home. It has occurred twice since last night. Maybe I’m should be blamed for putting too many apps.

Nokia Ovi Store

Jump to the Nokia Ovi store, I wish the store could have a better apps filter, at least show me which the apps are free! Majority of the users love to download free apps. So at least give me a better method to find free apps, rather than let me scroll page by page to find it. Especially the scrolling user experience on Symbian is not that appealing.

What I suggest to Nokia is provide users a desktop application for the Ovi Store, so users can better browse through the available apps on a larger screen. Just like iTunes app, I seldom find the app I need on my iPod Touch, rather than having the iTunes desktop app to find and download the apps I need.

UPDATED: I’ve been corrected that registered users are able to directly visit Ovi store http://store.ovi.com through normal desktop browser and there is filter to separate out FREE and PAID apps.

Thanks Omy and MINT Museum of Toys for their private Halloween party last Saturday. This Halloween’s party is specially co-organised by NHB and the MINT Museum of Toys, and facilitated by omy.sg, to show a different side of museums to youths.

MINT is located at Seah Street, just right next to the Raffles Hotel. It is a 5-storey well architecturally designed building. The only restriction for this museum visit was that no camera flashes allowed. The reason was because the flash will degrade the paint on the vintage toys.

So, under this circumstance, I could only rely on the ambient light, which was sometimes good, sometimes bad. End up plenty of my photos were in high ISO and grainy.

Each storey has their theme. Level 5 – Outerspace, Level 4 – Characters, Level 3 Childhood Favourites, Level 2- Collectables and Level 1 is the Mint Shop. They have a cafe and wine bar at the basement and rooftop.

My girlfriend and I at first were just hanging around the museum without the tour guide. I guess most people born after the 80’s also couldn’t figure out most of the toys characters name.

Later according to our tour guide, the “youngest” toy in the museum is the 1976 Star Wars action figure! So, don’t expect to see any latest Japan Anime action figure or Gundam here.

At here, you can see the whole evolution of Mickey Mouse. The first appearance of Mickey Mouse was very different from what we have seen today.

Most of the robot toys were from Japan. After the World War 2, Japan had aware that the future world was all about robots.

One thing I noticed about the vintage toys, they love to make it look chubby. At least, I saw chubby Snow White, Batman, Astroboy……

We reached the place far early than the party starts. After we have walked around the museum, we waited at party hall for the museum tour guide to start. There really have a nice comfortable sofa. Wish to get some of those sofas.

This was also the place where later the party took place; we enjoyed our meal, drinks and music.

With other invited bloggers, this time we had our tour guide walkthrough the place. The tour guide indeed gave an in-depth explanation and storytelling of the history of each toy. We were educated that toys that came with box will increase the value of the toy for 40~60%! Oh my gosh, I must keep all my box, my camera box, my desktop pc box, my PSPS box, my hand phone box……

This was the oldest toy in the museum and it was made in 1840’s. It was built with a simple mechanism where the toy could perform a step-by-step walking down the staircase. During that time, I guess this toy was considered as the most advanced toy.

We saw a Tintin 1:1 ratio toy model in the museum (not the above picture). The fact is Tintin was really quite a short gentleman. I guess his real height only around 1.5m.

The museum’s owner also collected plenty Beatles merchandises. The photo with the signatures of the all four Beatles members was very rare and was one of the precious items in the museum.

Besides the toys, the event organizer had invited 2 illustrators to do some Halloween caricature portraits for the visitors. There were 1 fortune teller and 1 magician in the party.

You don’t expect to get a “normal” portrait from the Halloween graphic artists. They were good at “evil-izing” us with their imaginations. We had our caricature portraits drawn by both artists, Drew and Msxi (hope didn’t get her name wrong).

This really was an unusual Halloween. The museum tour was a little rush; the guide said he could take more than 2 hours to slowly walk through all the toys! I didn’t realize Singapore have such a great toy museum hidden somewhere in the city.

One of the book publishers in German Franfurt Book Fair was using houseflies as their campaign promoters. Not sure whether this is the most effective advertising method, but definitely this is one of the most disgusting methods I have ever seen. You can see over 200 flies attached to an ultra light banner, flying around the books fairs. Not mentioning whether the flies are all disinfected or not.

The campaign organizer said that after a while, the wax attached to the flies will dissolve and no flies were harm. I still don’t get it; I wish they kill all the houseflies, after all fly is a pest! Anyway, the labour cost for 200 flies used in this campaign I guess is free! I must admit this is really a very innovative and yet degusting advertising campaign.

Maybe Singapore advertising agency can try something similar but NEA will come after you first.

What the Aussie is thinking about?! Apparently, this video is not suitable for gadget geeks with a weak heart. Sony Australia was having this crash test, just like the car crash test we have seen on internet. This time was a 3.2kg PS3 projected at the speed of 80km/h towards a 46 inch LCD TV.

The moment the PS3 smashed onto the Bravia LCD TV, I saw the water ripples and thought was special computer graphic effects for this commercial. But obviously it wasn’t, we just lost a 46” LCD TV. Not sure the PS3 manage to survive or not, because it seems like the PS3 has a fit casing.

It was actually a promotion campaign by Sony Australia which is giving away 25,000 PS3 with every Bravia LCD TV until this coming Christmas.

Before the official releasing of Windows 7 RTM, Microsoft said that Windows 7 Release Candidate will able to directly upgrade to the Final version. But this was only half correct; at least I came over 2 errors this morning during my Windows7 upgrade this morning.

Ultimate downgrade to Professional Method

While I was going to upgrade my Windows 7 RC to Retail Professional version, the first installation error was that it didn’t allow my upgrade because it said my RC are Ultimate version and I couldn’t downgrade Ultimate version to others, unless I choose to have a clean install.

A simple trick found from internet is all you have to do is go to registry to change the Product Name value from Ultimate to Professional. See Unawave.de for full instruction and also the 2 screenshots put up on this post are taken from their web site.

Lower Build RC Upgrade Method

Secondly, the next error of Compatibility Report pops up saying that my prerelease Windows 7 couldn’t directly upgrade. Microsoft has been lying to us about the RC directly upgrade thing?!

So the next step is to modify the file named cversion.ini within “sources” folder. Change the value of MinClient from the default 7233.0 to 7100.0. My Windows was 7226, that was lower than the restricted 7233, that is why the installation stop me from upgrading. The detail instruction can be found at icrontic.com.

Microsoft does sell softcopy of Windows7 through internet, in case you don’t know. But I guess most of the users get the DVD box set of Windows 7, then please take note that you need to copy the entire DVD content to your hard drive and do the file modification and installation.

After resolving these two errors, the rest were just normal installation. Even though Microsoft officially didn’t allow the directly downgrade to other version and not allowing prerelease Win7 lower than 7233 to install retail version, the thing is my Windows7 is now working perfectly. As long as your build is not lower than 7100, I think it is safe to make such upgrade.

On the releasing date of Microsoft Windows 7, Apple is giving a warm welcome to Windows 7 with three new “Get a Mac” commercials. The ads might be looking funny, but think Apple has gone too far.

Don’t know why I always dislike Apple when saw Get a Mac ads. Even Apple as a direct competitor to Microsoft, I don’t see it to be a brilliant method to bash others products and make yours sound superior. School bullies did it for that same reason. So, think that make me assume Apple is childish.

In “PC News”, Mac is creating a fake impression to TV viewers such that all XP users have flocked to upgrade to Mac instead of Windows 7. I guess all this has gone into our sub consciousness.

Continue from the previous post Jurong Bird Park: the first visit, here are more photos. After the enlightening Pelican feeding show, I took a snap of this swan swum gracefully in the pond. I wish to have a 50mm F1.8 lens to get better photo.

This swam was busy preening. Don’t know why this reminds me of roast goose rice (烧鹅饭). It must be sinful to have such thought in bird park.

After the big pond, it was the African Waterfall Aviary. It was huge and even the monorail gets to runs through the aviary.

In the African Waterfall Aviary, you can get even closer to over 50 species of birds.

Poor kid was scared by the birds and yet was forced by adult to raise her hand to do feeding.

These birds must be damn hungry. Don’t tell me this is their only meal in a day.

This is the world’s tallest man-made waterfall. It is 30 meters height. I guess normal country wouldn’t need to make a waterfall. But in Singapore, without many natural resources, everything needs to make out.

Another attempt again. After adjusting the correct focus, the cage in front eventually “disappeared”!

Saw people on forum sharing experience said that he sent in 200GB IDE for RMA and got 400GB SATA in return! Sound to me seem more like Seagate making delivery mistakes. But if so, that really rocks.

I keep too many dead hard disks at home. It would be nice if the hard disk manufacturers have some recycle program for users to send in their old hard disk and get some $$ rebate.

Before my trip to KL, I knew my 250GB Seagate hard disk had reached its life span. The typical symptoms of damaged hard drive appeared more intensively, such as disk scanning and OS hang in the middle of file transferring.

Went down to Sim Lim Square to get a new hard disk yesterday. It is a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green at SGD123. It was crazily cheap, SGD$0.123/GB! This hard disk manages to store more than the capacity combination of my five old IDE hard disks. What I love about this hard disk is the 40% lower power consumption, the heat emission is much lesser.

I initially planned to get a Seagate hard disk. But was told by the shopkeeper, the Seagate hard disk for 1TB come with only 3 years warranty. Therefore, I changed my mind to get the 5 years warranty WD.

Thanks Omy.sg for inviting us to the Halloween Horrors event. My girlfriend and I were having great time last night.

Outside Night Safari

When we arrived at the ticket booths, already saw quite long tourists queue buying tickets. It is advised to book your tickets online to avoid the queue. At least we got our Media Pass from the same online booking reception counter very fast.

Before entering the Night Safari entrance, we had already taken quite a lot photos. Too bad I’m not good at low light photography; and the worst, the flash I borrowed from Johnson, don’t know why it was not working not the spot. I end up using my camera built in flash with high ISO3200 and shuttle speed of 1/50 sec.

2-storey height big robotic Pumpkin head time to time will stand up and said something. I was busy taking photo, forgot what it had said.

We found a lot “gone-wrong” fairy tales characters here. Was this the Cinderella? Was she murdered by her own shoe?!

This clown gave creepy high pitch laughter or quietly appeared right behind you. He had successfully generated a lot screams from ladies. Ladies, please beware when you turning around.

This Aladdin was not scary at all, instead he looks very cool.

Dear Pinocchio tried to pretend to look sorrow?

There was stage performance on 8pm. Great performance and the audiences all loved it.

The performers were playing around with the fire. I tried to take those stage photos without flash, hope the high ISO able to capture the atmosphere.

Enter The Night Safari

Finally a long while hanging around, we entered the entrance. Can’t believe you can get so much entertainment even before you bought the tickets. Inside there, we had chance to choose in between the normal train ride or the special Halloween Train of Terror. We took the normal one first then the Train of Terror to compare the differences.

On the tram, no flashes photography is allowed. Unless I have a night vision lens, so due to the low light, no animal photo was taken on the journey. The normal tram ride allows us to drop off at the east lodge and get a walk. During our walk, some of the animals were hardly seen with our naked eyes. Guess if the Safari can provide each visitor a pair of night vision goggles. That would be awesome!

Roughly an hour, we completed the normal train ride and leopard trail. We were back to the Safari entrance for the Train of Terror and Gate to Neverland! At the beginning of the journey, it was almost the same as the normal ride. Just this time the live commentator’s voice changed to become eerie. The last part of the tram journey was the Gate of Neverland! Yeah, the monsters gave us an unexpected fright.

This lady was disturbing us while we queuing for the train of terror.

On the tram ride, a Mummy suddenly jumped out and gave the front row young teenagers a fright.

After “slaughtering” his victim, a hilarious moment when he asked us that what we were looking at.

Leaving…

We missed the animal night shows since we had spent too much of the time taking tram rides. However, we totally enjoyed ourselves. We left the Night Safari around 11pm.
