Great song from a great new CD, but I have the same trouble with the video that I have with 9 out of 10 videos: it puts images (and silly ones) on the images I've already formed in my own mind for the song. I much prefer pure performance videos without "Wild Things" giant trees and imagery. Cranky old me...

Hi Chris, thanks for your comment. I'd imagine that there are lots of OHV clubs out there, some of which are larger than others. Regardless, your small group of enthusiasts probably isn't representative of the "lobby."

There are definitely corporate funded/sponsored groups out there that have a big vested interest in getting the government to designate more OHV areas, even as existing areas continue to be poorly supervised and scarred with hundreds, if not thousands of miles of illegal trails. And even if there weren't corporate interests involved, I'm certainly more glad that there are well-funded environmental groups out there vs. well-funded OHV advocacy groups.

But even if the OHV lobby is as weak as you say it is, I still want fewer OHVs on our public lands, not more. I don't know why people think that their ability to enjoy nature is contingent upon their ability to destroy it. Maybe you're not one of those people, but mud pluggers and dune bashers remain the people who ultimately benefit from more off-road areas, and people who wish to quietly enjoy nature (the majority of people who visit these places) are the ones who suffer.

As Edward Abbey said, "A man on foot, on horseback or on a bicycle will see more, feel more, enjoy more in one mile than the motorized tourists can in a hundred miles."

"The well-funded off-road vehicle lobby is pressuring forest managers to add unnecessary roads and permit other destructive practices in the forest."

This statement is so full of fail. You do not know the reality of citizen involvement in the Forest Service's Travel Management Process, and you do not know the reality of OHV advocacy groups. I'd match my OHV organization's spreadsheet against any green group's in a comparison for resource scarcity. We've received one (1) $3000 gift from Kawasaki USA in the entire time I've been associated with the organization, and that can be attributed to the fact that one of our officers is a former Kawasaki factory racer. How much does the Pew Charitable Trusts give to green advocacy groups? Hmmm?

I used to love Califone, but admittedly haven't listened to them in quite awhile. This post has reminded me to dig out some of the old albums. I'd love to check out Funeral Singers on vinyl (and my turntable would like to as well), thank you so much for the giveaway- keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks Marty, that's an excellent response.

I agree, the Pitchfork review is full of backhanded compliments, but I'm definitely glad that an erratic writer didn't eviscerate it on a whim instead—as they appear to have done with the new Avett Brothers album, which is loved by everyone that I know.

In general, I'm a little surprised that more people aren't raving about Funeral Singers. I think it's damn near perfect. Sure, it's received high marks from pretty much everywhere, but I agree, if Pitchfork was going to like it, I was expecting something in the nines or at least high eights.

It seems like a lot of other blogs' reviews are based upon Pitchfork's criticisms, as well—calling it "more of the same," etc. This makes me wonder if there's an original thought anywhere in music blogging anymore (maybe there never was).

When only one website matters, it kind of defeats the purpose of smaller sites writing reviews. It's part of the reason why we tend to review shows, rather than albums.

I started to comment on this, but the comment became so long, I posted it at the blog. Essentially, I think PF and others underrated this album. . . .

Perkins is such a talented and powerful singer and lyricist. Can't wait to hear more of him.
