This summer, we offer three levels of camps. During our first week (July 9-12), the Ranch Hands will learn safety, grooming, saddling, nutrition, breeds, ranch horse versatility, and will show their horses in their very own ranch horse show at the end of the week! Ages 9-12 and those cowboys and cowgirls with little to no horse experience are ideal for this week’s camp – they’ll leave knowing the responsibilities it takes to own their own horse, with a confidence and comfort with horses and the “cowboy” way of life.

We can’t wait to welcome the Outriders during OutWest’s second week of camp (July 16-19). Perfect for more experienced horseback riders, these cowboys and cowgirls, ages 12-17, will practice more advanced events such as sorting, reining, ranch horse versatility, and cutting. Riders are welcome to bring their own horses or use OutWest’s quality ranch horses for the week.

Finally, for the younger cowboys and cowgirls looking to get an early head start, the OutWest camp for Wranglers (under 8 years old) provides a two-day experience in which kids will become comfortable with horses, and have fun, with safe, experienced staff. Western-style games, crafts, and plenty of horseback riding will fill up our two days together (July 23 and 24).

Quality, friendly, and “kid-broke” OutWest horses will be provided. Download the registration information on our website and view the information about the camp leaders and horses. We hope to see you there!

Last Saturday, August 6th, we had a great turnout at the Wright County Fair for OutWest’s Ranch Cut & Sort Jackpot with over 230 teams competing.   Although it may have been a long night with a short rain delay, the crowd seemed to be into the competition as much as the riders were.  Thanks again to everyone who came out to join us!   Congratulations to our Top 5 teams!

Also, this past week on Wednesday, we had our final night of Summer Sorting Leagues.  The Top 3 Riders in each league were awarded prizes with belt buckles going to those who finished with the highest number of points after the six weeks.  Congratulations to all of our riders and we are looking forward to more beautiful weather for our Fall leagues.

Our Wednesday night Sorting leagues filled up fast this year and are flying by just as quickly.  We will be halfway finished with our Spring leagues after tonight’s sorting.  Just a reminder that all weekly point results can be found on our Ranch Sorting page under our Events (www.outwestarena.com/horse-events/test). 

Friday night Team Sorting practices have begun and there has been much enthusiasm and excitement going around for riders to start working their horses on the cattle.  

The cattle have been settling in quite nicely, especially after this past Memorial weekend when we hosted our first Ranch Cut & Sort Jackpot of the season.  We had a wonderful day and we would like to Congratulate again our top 5 teams of the day! 

There is much to be found at OutWest this year and we hope to see you at one of the many events.

Also, last Wednesday evening, October 13th, we offically ended the 2010 season with our last night of our Fall Sorting Leagues.  It was a tight race for some of the placings leading into Week 7 and we could not have asked for a better night to end on.  The weather has been pretty good for our Wednesday night leagues and yesterday was no exception.   The results for the Fall leagues are posted on our Events page, but below are the top winners for each league:

This past Saturday, we ended our Ranch Horse Show Curcuit Series on what turned out to be another GREAT day at OutWest Arena.  The morning showed signs of rain, but the sun was shining bright by the afternoon classes. 

Throughout the season, we have had many regulars of the OutWest family come out for every Ranch Horse Show this season, but we have had many new friends join us along the way.  It was even great to see new faces at our last show and even more enjoyable watching them earn their first ribbons. 

At the end of the day we handed out our Champion and Reserve Champion belt buckles to the horse & rider combination who accumulated the most points in the Youth classes, Open Mares and Open Geldings throughout our five horse shows this season.  The belt buckles went to:

Logan Blum - Youth Champion, Lyndsey Balfanz - Youth Reserve Champion

Natalie Otto -  Open Mare Champion &  Reserve Champion

OutWest had another great year at the Wright County Fair thanks to Ron Denn and the Wright County Fair Board.  It is always a fun full day of events when we are at the fair. 

The day started over at the warm-up riding pen with OutWest Mutton Bustin.  We had 27 sheep riders who were young Cowboys and Cowgirls by the end of the afternoon.  The sheep were fast and fierce, but the young riders held their own on the backs of those sheep.  The crowd was really cheering them on.  Along with the riders, we mixed in a few other events that included stick barrel racing and cow pie tossing.  Thanks for the wonderful support of those who helped out for the day, which included the Fair Royalty ladies.  They made great barrels for our barrel racing!

In the evening we moved over to the riding arena for our Ranch Cut & Sorts.  We started with the novice teams made up of riders involved in 4-H.  The turnout was much larger than last year and it was great to see how the sport of sorting is still continuing to grow. 

Following the novice, we continued with the Open Ranch Cut & Sort Jackpot.  With the nicer weather we had this year compared to last year’s rain, there were 116 teams total bringing back the top 20 times for the short-go.  Not far into the competition, the times were really flying and it was a fight to get into the top 20.  The teams who came back for the short-go were trying for the chance to take home champion and reserve champion belt buckles and 50% payout to the top 5 teams.  It was a tight race, but Congratulations to our top 5 teams:

1st Place Team - Lisa Smith and Angie Gebhart with a combined time of 55:05

2nd Place Team - Brian Kruger and Brandon Kruger with a combined time of 56:42

3rd Place Team - Sarah White and Joe White with a combined time of 56:57

4th Place Team - Brandon Arndt and Kirk Hawk with a combined time of 1:00:09

5th Place Team - Melissa Nash and Kirk Hawk with a combined time of 1:01:43

OutWest 4th of July Weekend Jackpot Winners: Carol Reid, Rick Reid, Charlie Little, Chad Little, Blake Kruger, Kirk Hawk, Jim Anderson, Lloyd Christenson and Melissa Christenson

OutWest hosted their 2nd Annual 4th of July weekend Jackpot here on Saturday, July 3rd.  The wind was sure flying this past weekend and so were the cattle.  With more than 80 teams, our short go consisted of the top 20 times that were separated only by about 15 seconds.  It was a great turnout and we had a fun and fantastic 4th weekend.

2nd Place Team – Chad Little and Kirk Hawk with a combined time of 1:15:64

Thank you to all those who came out to celebrate their holiday here at OutWest.  Our next big Jackpot will be on August 7th at the Wright County Fair.  We have enjoyed hosting a Jackpot at the fairgrounds for the last few years and we look forward to another great turnout this year.   We hope to see you there!
