Here’s some late news about two group shows in Eureka.

Kinpa was shown in the Fifth Birthday of Accident Gallery from April until June 5.

X & Y will be in an invitational show at Empire Squared called Thrice for one evening on June 5th.

The 3-D gallery is now open for visitors, featuring Smile and Ushabty of Menmet. This is a smaller gallery but be sure to see the detail views also.

There’s now a fifth page for the studies & works in progress gallery. Most of these sketches and studies have never been shown publicly so it’s another interesting look into the ideas and how they take shape and change over time.

In the Works in Progress section there are a few pictures of studies for the painting Shunga Remix.

Japan and China trip, spring 2009

Also after a few months delay, here are some pictures from Orr’s trip to Japan and China in the spring.

My trip was from March 27 to April 28 this year. The China set is larger because I had more time to take pictures there. When I went to China I was curious to see how it would compare to Japan, and [the first pictures of each set] epitomize my impression of the difference (although spending only a few days each in the two largest cities, Beijing and Shanghai, may not be enough to make a judgment). In Japan everything seems closely packed together and well organized, while in China things are spread farther apart and somewhat chaotic, although the government intends to keep tight control. For example, in Japan even the biggest buildings are often just a few inches apart, but in China there is much more space between the buildings, the streets are wide and there are sidewalks, at least in those two cities. In Japan people tend to obey laws for traffic and pedestrians, but in China… well, I could hardly tell if there are any such laws.

X & Y has been added to the dot series gallery with a couple detail images. A photograph of this painting in progress was used for a collection of short stories which you can see in the exhibits section.

studies & works in progress gallery

The studies & works in progress gallery is finally open. Through the studies you can see some of the creation process and ideas behind the artwork. There are over 300 studies, sketches, and reference studies so it’s taken a while to assemble this many photographs and there are still more coming. Each image in the studies gallery is also linked directly to and from each finished work so it should be easy to jump into the studies section from the rest of the web site.

The navigation is set up differently than the other galleries since there are so many thumbnails it didn’t make sense to show all of them at once. Please try it out and and let us know what you think.

Appearances at Empire Squared

Orr Marshall’s digital print Appearances, 30″ × 24″, will be shown in the Black & White Invitational at Empire Squared, during Arts Alive, Saturday October 3^rd from 6 p.m. until around midnight (one night only). The Empire Squared gallery is at 47 West 3rd St., Eureka, CA. The print is based on frames from his film ROSENOSE.

When a friend of mine from Empire Squared gave me the entry form for this show I happened to be editing some film frames including the one I sent you as a thumbnail for the Films gallery, so I got the idea of putting together a sequence starting with that image.

The graphic design gallery features a lot of theater posters and restaurant logos and illustrations Orr has done over the years. If you live in the Eureka-Arcata area you’ve probably seen some of these around before.

Graffiti Girl details and notes

I finally finished the detail images and tooltip notes for Graffiti Girl. There are about 80 of them and a few have links to other related notes that you can try out.

That should wrap up all of the notes for now so I’ll be working on other things.

If you know Orr (my dad) you would know that he’s very interested in languages and speaks Japanese, French, German, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, and has studied others. Internet translation tools have gotten pretty good so I thought I would try one out. I installed a WordPress plugin called Google AJAX Translation and then spent a few days modifying it and fixing it up. Try it out and see what you think! This is a study from December of 2007. I asked my dad to take some photographs as he’s working so that I can post some works in progress also. Most of you already know that some of his paintings take many months to finish so I thought it would be nice to see them as they’re being created.

We’re going to add another gallery called studies and works in progress for these pictures.
