In a study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences, analyzing the effects of genetically modified foods on mammalian health, researchers found that agricultural giant Monsanto’s GM corn is linked to organ damage in rats.

According to the study, which was summarized by Adam Shake at Twilight Earth, “Three varieties of Monsanto’s GM corn – Mon 863, insecticide-producing Mon 810, and Roundup® herbicide-absorbing NK 603 – were approved for consumption by US, European and several other national food safety authorities.”

Monsanto gathered its own crude statistical data after conducting a 90-day study, even though chronic problems can rarely be found after 90 days, and concluded that the corn was safe for consumption. The stamp of approval may have been premature, however.

In the conclusion of the IJBS study, researchers wrote:

“Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxification organs, but in detail differed with each GM type. In addition, some effects on heart, adrenal, spleen and blood cells were also frequently noted. As there normally exists sex differences in liver and kidney metabolism, the highly statistically significant disturbances in the function of these organs, seen between male and female rats, cannot be dismissed as biologically insignificant as has been proposed by others.

We therefore conclude that our data strongly suggests that these GM maize varieties induce a state of hepatorenal toxicity….These substances have never before been an integral part of the human or animal diet and therefore their health consequences for those who consume them, especially over long time periods are currently unknown.”

Monsanto has immediately responded to the study, stating that the research is “based on faulty analytical methods and reasoning and do not call into question the safety findings for these products.”

The IJBS study’s author Gilles-Eric Séralini responded to the Monsanto statement on the blog, Food Freedom, “Our study contradicts Monsanto conclusions because Monsanto systematically neglects significant health effects in mammals that are different in males and females eating GMOs, or not proportional to the dose.

This is a very serious mistake, dramatic for public health. This is the major conclusion revealed by our work, the only careful reanalysis of Monsanto crude statistical data.”

I wanted to see who had the better juicer. I of course said I did, but I could be partial to my omega juicer.

We took each of our juicers (see more info about them below) and tested quantity and quality of the juice and pulp produced as well as how easy they are to clean. Oh and we measured out 6 oz of raw organic carrots to keep it fair.

Model: MP 75
Type: 4235
Cost: FREE (from craigslist.com)

PROS:
- Portable
- Lightweight
- Perfect Price

They actually don’t make this juicer, the Braun MP-75 anymore, which is maybe why we found it on craigslsit.com for free but I have seen them on ebay. I have to say I was extremely impressed at how well this juicer performed. I liked that it was small, lightweight and relatively easy to clean. This is great if you’re an occasional juicer or travel a lot. It doesn’t extract as much juice as it should, which means the pulp is not as dry as the other juicers.

OMEGA

Model: 8005
Cost: $260

PROS:
- Juices Wheat Grass
- Makes Nut Butters
- Easy to Clean

This is my beautiful juicer, which I spent 2 weeks researching and in my opinion is amazing! The Omega 8005 Juicer is the most effective single gear masticating juicer on the market. Designed and engineered for health-conscious people who want greater variety in their juicing routine, the Omega 8005 Juicer has the ability to juice everything from fruits and vegetables and can even make nut butters.

In my opinion what makes this the best juicer is how easy it is to clean and it’ll juice wheat grass! Even though (when u watch the video) it doesn’t extract as much juice as the Breville, that is easily compensated for by how easy it is to clean. Its also very quite and doesn’t take up that much space.

BREVILLE

Model: 800JEXL
Cost: $260

PROS:
- Extremely Fast
- Titanium Cutting Disc
- Two Speeds

This is Lisa Paris’s juicer, she calls it the Cadillac of juicers and she’s correct….right down to its gigantic size. The Breville 800JEXL Fountain Elite Juicer has commercial performance. It’s 1000 watts power up to 13,000 RPM for up to 30% more juice than traditional juicers. In the video you can clearly see it does produce the most amount of juice and the pulp is by far the driest.

It uses a titanium cutting disc and uses a stainless steel micromesh filter. The cutting disc is so powerful that pineapple can be juiced in large chunks with the rind on.

Who Won?

I’m very curious to see what juicer all of you thought won! Please make sure to leave a quick comment and let us know. Cheers! Jason

When cold weather strikes a chilling blow, it makes sense to consume healthy, warming, concentrated foods. Here are 7 amazing herbs that will warm you up and add some spice to your life!

When cold weather strikes a chilling blow, it makes sense to consume healthy, warming, concentrated foods. Dark orange vegetables such as sweet potatoes, winter squash, and carrots provide immune nourishing beta-carotene and the warmth of the orange ray.

Grounding roots (especially those that grow in cold climates) such as onions, rutabagas and turnips can help one better acclimate to the seasons. Other warming foods include arugula, mustard greens, and watercress. Nuts, seeds, and their butters make excellent warming and insulating snacks. Icy cold drinks can cool you quick. If consuming food from the refrigerator, take the item out and allow it to get to room temperature before eating.

The flavor associated with winter is salty and rather than relying on table salt, learn to enjoy the wonderful mineral rich seaweeds such as kelp, nori, hiziki, and dulse which can be used to season food. Celtic or Himalayan salt contain more minerals, as indicated by their colors. Black colored foods such as black sesame seeds, uncured black olives, and chia seeds make wonderful warming winter condiments.

(OrganicJar) I’m a huge fan of nut milks especially because they’re so much healthier than dairy milk and taste amazing! I created a quick, simple video with my friend Lisa Paris explaining just how easy it is to make your own almond nut milk.
.
Almonds are an incredible food! They were one of the first cultivated nuts on earth and are so rich with nutrients. Its important to mention that you need to be buying ‘raw’ organic almonds to get them most nutrients from them.
.
However, many don’t know that a law was passed a few years ago requiring all almonds to be pasteurized. The worst part is they can still legally be labeled as raw! If you didn’t know this, make sure to check out an article I wrote all about it here: Raw Almonds Are Illegal The good news is there are 2 loopholes that still allow you to purchase truly raw almonds, so make sure to check that article out.

Okay, back to our amazing Almond Nut Milk! Here’s what you’ll need to make this:

Ingredients

2 Cups – Raw Organic Almonds

4 Cups – Purified Water

2 Pitted Dates

1 tsp – Vanilla Extract

A Dash of Cinnamon (optional)

Equipment

Blender

Nut Milk Bag / Cheesecloth (or as Lisa mentioned a cheap ‘Paint Strainer’ found at any hardware store)

Directions

Soak the almonds in 2 cups water for 24 hours; rinse well and discard soaked water (forgot to mention this in the video). Why you need to soak your almonds: Raw organic almonds have a natural growth inhibitor on the outside that is toxic — not deadly, but not pleasant, especially for sensitive individuals. The 24 hour soaking removes this. I usually change the water several times, just to remove the toxins.

Blend: Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Strain: Strain through a nut milk bag. You can use a nylon bag designed for this purpose, a hemp bag designed for sprouting, a cheese cloth or even a paint strainer found at any local hardware store.

Enjoy! The liquid is the milk. The pulp has plenty of nutrition and uses.

Even if you know what it is, maybe you don’t know how to use it.

I created a quick fun video explaining how to use this ancient device and even invited a friend who’s never heard the word, give it a try for the first time.

What Is A Neti Pot

A Neti pot is a simple all natural way to clean and flush out your nasal cavities. It uses a warm saline solution(salt and water) and gravity to quickly and easily flush out the 4 nasal passages we have.

Neti pots can be made from clay, glass, various metals, plastic, or ceramic. They cost anywhere from $6.00 to $20.00. The neti pot in the video, which I use is by Ancient Secrets (click here to buy on Amazon) it cost $10.

The neti pot used with a saline solution has been shown to be an effective treatment for hay fever, sinusitis, nasal blockage (due to: pollution, pollen, dust) and other nasal conditions.

The nasal passages are considered the doorway for most diseases. They consist of finely-tuned hairs and a mucus membranes, that are intended to catch and restrain foreign entities from entering our bodies. Its how nature protects us from diseases.

Unfortunately, this filtering mechanism can become overloaded through high exposure to pollution, chemicals, fragrances, pollen and dust. Cleansing this ‘filter’ regularly allows it to operate more efficiently.

How To Use A Neti Pot

Fill the Neti Pot with warm water.

Mix in a heaping 1/4 tsp of finely ground non-iodized salt in roughly 8oz of your warm water. (this equates to 0.9% solution – the same as human blood – and is called an isotonic solution).

Tilt your head to the side as shown in the video and place the nose cone of the neti pot into the raised nostril, sealing it to the nostril with a few twists and slight pressure.

Open your mouth and breathe gently through your mouth. Relax. If you’re calm, the water flows right through. I like to focus and visualize the water flowing smoothly through my nasal passages. Try not to sniff, swallow, laugh, talk or have any movement of air through the nose while the water is flowing through.

Raise the neti pot slowly to create a steady flow of saline solution through the upper nostril and out the lower nostril. During the process you can breathe through your mouth.

When you’re done, gently blow out through both nostrils to clear any water or mucus from the nasal passages.

Change sides, reverse the tilt of your head and repeat the process on the other side.

You can also use herbal oils and herbal remedies instead of water. If you’ve ever done this, please leave a comment and let us know. Cheers!

Alissa Hamiliton has written a new book on the subject called Squeezed: What You Don’t Know About Orange Juice

I want to know where on the nutritional label the flavor packets are listed, and whats in them!

Truly fresh orange juice only last a few days. It if last for weeks (or months), it’s an industrial product.

Until the Florida orange growers launched a campaign in the early 20th century to deal with their surplus crop, the only people who drank orange juice were Floridians who had a tree in their backyard. There is nothing particularly healthy or natural about drinking orange juice – and the industrial product is a total waste of money.

Airlines were suspended, cellular service was down, hundreds have died and over 500,000 people are now homeless, many still waiting for help.

It truly saddens me how there is little to no media coverage on what is ‘truly’ going on. Not only are hundreds of thousands of people homeless but they are also starving!

I’ve spent a significant amount of time in the Philippines and before this tragedy, people would be on the streets begging for a spoonful of rice, I can only image how many are going hungry every night.

But all of us have the power to make a difference and it’s easy! All you have to do is use the information below to make a donation of: money, clothes, or food. I know all of you have some clothes in that bottom drawer or in the back of your closet that just collects dust because we ‘might’ need it…lets give it to someone who ‘does’ need it.

A shortage of energy is the No. 1 complaint of most people who stay busy juggling a career, a relationship and a workout plan. Keeping all these activities going takes, well, a ton of energy.

The best strategy is to eat small meals of energy-promoting foods several times throughout the day, rather than infrequently binging on huge meals (you also need to exercise, get enough sleep and control stress, but that’s a whole other article). With that in mind, I compiled a list of the top five energy boosting foods that will give you true, lasting energy to keep you active all day!
.

Oats

Oats contain the energizing and stress-lowering B vitamin family, which helps transform carbs into usable energy. Oats are also low on the glycemic index because they have a lot of fiber. That means that your body gets a steady stream of energy, as opposed to a short-term spike, because the carbohydrates gradually flow into your bloodstream.
The key here is to look for high-fiber oatmeal, like oat bran. For the best nutrition kick, avoid instant oatmeal and stick with more natural varieties, my favorite are steel cut and groats!

Lentils

Beans are a great source of fiber, which translates to a slow release of glucose, as well as B vitamins, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, calcium and copper. Lentils provide both carbohydrates and protein, making them a great addition to any meal. Lentils help reduce your cholesterol and blood pressure, and they’re low in fat and calories to boot.

Bananas

Bananas provide a lot of potassium, an electrolyte that helps maintain normal nerve and muscle function. Unlike some nutrients, the body doesn’t store potassium for long periods of time. This means that your potassium level can drop during times of stress or during strenuous exercise when the nutrient is lost through excessive sweating. The sugar in bananas is an easily digested form of carbohydrate.

Other fruits such as apples, grapes, peaches and pineapples also make great energizing and refreshing snacks. We all know we need to be eating more fruits in our diet!

Water

Without water, your body cannot generate energy. Water makes it possible for your system to digest, absorb and transport nutrients. It also helps regulate body temperature. When you’re dehydrated, your cells receive nutrients for energy less efficiently, and your body can’t properly expend heat through sweating. Both conditions lead to fatigue. Aim to drink eight to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water a day.

Almonds

These little guys are great if you’re looking to improve your focus and mental clarity. Monounsaturated fats such as almonds provide essential fatty acids, known as omega-3s and omega-6s that produce an alert mental state. NOTICE: You want to consume Raw Almonds, which are actually illegal in all 50 states. I wrote a great article all about it, plus the 2 loop holes that still allow you to purchase them. READ HERE

.

Chocolate

Studies show that chocolate can elevate your energy levels by way of certain bioactive compounds such as tyramine and phenylethylamine. Chocolate has also been claimed to improve anemia, awaken the appetite, aid in digestion, and improve longevity. Chocolate contains sugar and caffeine along with fat and calories so consume in moderation. When possible, opt for dark chocolate or raw cacao (love this!) for the highest source of antioxidants.

Working these naturally energizing foods into your daily routine doesn’t have to be difficult. With a little imagination and effort, you can have all the energy you need to stay awake and alert throughout the entire day!

Quick Energy Boosters:

The quickest energy is from carbohydrates. That’s the body’s first preferences for energy. Did you ever hear about carbohydrate loading? That’s what marathon runners do when they run a long race, they carb load. The reason they do that is because your body’s first preference for fuel is from stored carbohydrate, and you store carbohydrate as glycogen in your muscles and your liver.

Sustained Energy Boosters:

A balance of nutrients is really what’s going to give you sustained energy because your body digests protein, fats and carbohydrates differently. In other words, you can eat them all at the same time but they are all going to be processed differently. Carbohydrates start being digested in your mouth, protein starts in your stomach and fat doesn’t start until it reaches your intestines. That’s why foods that are combinations of nutrients give you sustained energy.

Here are 5 simple amazing foods, that everyone should incorporate into there diet.

(OrganicJar) Here are 5 simple amazing foods, that everyone (almost everyone) should incorporate into there diet.

Cinnamon

Here’s one superfood that’s easy on the waistline and popular with kids. The bark of the cinnamon tree, native to Sri Lanka, turns out to have extraordinary health benefits. Various research conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests that cinnamon regulates blood sugar, inhibits cancer cells and is anti-inflammatory.

Tip
add some to your cereal or yogurt!
.

Coconut Milk

The coconut is an unusual fruit: It’s rich, and the fat is mostly saturated. In the South Pacific, traditional diets use copious amounts of coconut oil, yet studies there have shown that people don’t get heart disease. In the U.S., research to support the heart-healthy claim is still being conducted. But we do know that coconut flakes, coconut milk and cream, and coconut oil contain lots of an antiviral, antibacterial fatty acid called lauric acid—one of the immune-boosters babies get from breast milk.

Tip
add to smoothies, and homemade juices, you can substitute this for water in many recipes.

Nuts

Raw almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts and hazelnuts are all rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and antioxidants. Walnuts are one of the best vegetarian sources of the omega-3 fatty acids that fight obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Meanwhile, Brazil nuts are incredibly rich in the antioxidant selenium—essential for sperm health, says fertility expert Dr. Marc Goldstein of Cornell University.

Tip
nuts are a great travel snack. Keep some in your purse, office anywhere u spend most of your day.

Raw Honey

If you have a sweet tooth, try these whole, natural sweeteners instead of sugar. Unfiltered, raw honey contains many phytonutrients and enzymes to aid digestion. Its great in tea, and coffee.

Tip
Unlike normal honey (don’t buy your honey in the shape of a bear), raw honey has not been heated and retains all the amazing, and mysterious properties and nutrients.

Olive Oil

Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats (which reduce inflammation), phenols (cancer-fighting antioxidants) and vitamin E (which lowers the risk of heart disease, protects skin from damaging agents, and prevents nerve damage). Cold-pressed, extra-virgin oil contains more phenols, and its vitamin E is undamaged.

Tip
Gently sauté vegetables in it, drizzle it on salads or use it in pesto.

Probiotics and Prebiotics

Extra Foods and Pharmaceuticals

I think being prepared is a good thing. I recommend a 1 month supply of key foods and pharmaceuticals you need so you don’t have to leave your house. (this is a government recommendation…which is scary in my mind that ‘they’ recommend this, what do they know, we don’t?)

While previous research has shown that sleep improves memory, this study is the first to address errors in memory.

The findings, which appear in the September issue of the journal Learning & Memory, have practical implications for everyone from students flubbing multiple choice tests to senior citizens confusing their medications, said Kimberly Fenn, principal investigator and MSU assistant professor of psychology.

“It’s easy to muddle things in your mind,” Fenn said. “This research suggests that after sleep you’re better able to tease apart the incorrect aspect of that memory.”

The Study:

Study participants were exposed to lists of words and then, 12 hours later, exposed to individual words and asked to identify which words they had seen or heard in the earlier session. One group of students was trained in the morning (10 a.m.) and tested after the course of a normal sleepless day (10 p.m.), while another group was trained at night and tested 12 hours later in the morning, after at least six hours of sleep.

Three experiments were conducted, using different stimuli. In each, the students who had slept had fewer problems with false memory – choosing fewer incorrect words.

How Does Sleep Help Memory?

The quick answer is, we don’t know yet, but we suspects it may be due to sleep strengthening the source of the memory, Fenn said. The source, or context in which the information is acquired, is a vital element of the memory process.

Or perhaps the people who didn’t sleep during the study were simply bombarded with information over the course of the day, affecting their memory ability, Fenn said.

“We know older individuals generally have worse memory performance than younger individuals. We also know from other research that elderly individuals tend to be more prone to false memories,” Fenn said. “Given the work we’ve done it’s possible that sleep may actually help them to reject this false information.
Researchers at Imperial College London have found evidence a chemical in broccoli and other green leafy vegetables could boost a natural defense mechanism that protects arteries from the clogging that can cause heart attacks.

In a study funded by the British Heart Foundation charity and conducted on mice, the researchers found that sulforaphane — a compound occurring naturally in broccoli and other brassicas — could “switch on” a protective protein which is inactive in parts of the arteries vulnerable to clogging.

“We know that vegetables are clearly good for you, but surprisingly the molecular mechanisms of why they are good for you have remained unknown for many years,” said Paul Evans of the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College.

“This study provides a possible explanation for how green vegetable consumption can promote a healthy heart.”

Scientists already know that arteries don’t clog up in a uniform way, but that there are bends and branches of blood vessels — where blood flow is disrupted or slower — which are much more prone to the build-up of fatty plaques that cause heart disease.

Evans said his research found that in the more vulnerable areas, a normally protective protein known as Nrf2 is inactive.

“What our study showed was that sulforaphane can protect those regions by switching on the Nrf2,” he said.
