Do you know an ONIG member who has demonstrated excellence in the field of informatics over the last calendar year? If so, please consider nominating one of your colleagues for the ONIG Annual Achievement Award!! Nomination requirements and deadlines are listed below.

Nomination Requirements:

Provide a short summary of the nominee’s exceptional contributions to ONIG and the field of informatics
Provide a nominee’s contact information including full name, mailing address, telephone number(s) and email address.
Provide name and contact information for the nominator(s)
Submit your nomination to Lynn Tkac, at ltkac@rougevalley.ca. Submission Deadline: January 4, 2013, at 23:59 EST.

Call for Nomination to the Board of Directors: Secretary, for remainder of the 2012–2014 term
Call for Nomination to the Board of Directors: President Elect, and, Communication Director (2013-2015 term)

Position descriptions

Deadline: January 30, 2013 at 1700 hours (5:00 p.m.)

The list of candidates will be posted on the ONIG website in early February 2013. Elections will take place shortly after.

Qualifications for Office

Any person nominated to an elected Board position shall be a Registered Nurse, a member of RNAO and ONIG, and shall continue to be such so long as the nurse holds office.

Each Director of ONIG shall:

Have informatics experience,
Be currently working in the field,
Have the capacity to contribute to the development of information technology solutions that support quality health care
Be available to attend, a majority of the regularly scheduled meetings, in person or by conference phone call, at least one face to face meeting and at least two education days per year
Be supported by their employer i.e. able to meet the expectations of the role

Instructions

Persons nominated must be RNAO members in good standing for the year 2013, who are willing to carry out the obligations of the office to which they may be elected
Nominees require the signatures of a nominator who must be an ONIG member in good standing for 2013
All nominations should include a short biography of the candidate of not more than 250 words which describes education/experience and reason for interest in the position
Complete the following nomination form, and submit to Lynn Tkac (ltkac@rougevalley.ca) by 5pm on January 30th, 2013.

Call for Nomination to Board of Directors: Secretary, for remainder of the 2012–2014 term

Deadline: October 15 2012 at 1700 hours (5:00 p.m.)

The list of candidates will be posted on the ONIG website from Oct 16-30th, 2012. Elections will take place electronically during this period and results will be posted to the website.

Position description:

Reports to: President, ONIG Board of Directors

Primary Function: To maintain a record of the activities of the ONIG Board meetings

Qualifications: Elected member ONIG Board

Responsibilities:

• To develop and circulate agendas and other pertinent materials for Board meetings

• To record the discussion, decisions, and actions of the ONIG Board meetings and ensure minutes are posted on the website no later than one week following the Board meeting

• To conduct correspondence as requested by the President

• To receive a copy of general correspondence addressed to ONIG

• To ensure the following are carried out: (I) ONIG Application Form is current, (2) Maintain all business contacts for ONIG.

• Notify Board members of their election

Duration: Position held for two (2) years and not to exceed two consecutive terms.

While many health professionals use social media extensively within their personal lives, their use within healthcare organisations and by health professionals to improve health outcomes, is more limited. This presentation and discussion will explore the rhetoric of the possibilities of using social media in healthcare, and practical examples from around the world of the actual use, and the issues arising. Other issues, such as the development of 'codes of practice' to govern professionals' use of social media, will also be addressed.

Speaker Information:
Dr. Peter Murray, PhD, RN, MSc, CertEd, FBCS CITP is currently Chief Executive Officer of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA). He has nearly 30 years health experience, starting as a coronary care nurse before moving into education and health/nursing informatics. He remains involved in teaching health informatics at post graduate level, most recently at Walter Sisulu University. He has an MSc in Nursing and a PhD in nursing informatics and educational technology, and is a qualified nurse teacher.

His current interests include free/libre and open source software, and the use of social media, in particular for virtual engagement with health informatics events and organisations. He has been actively involved in journal editing and reviewing for over 20 years, has authored, or co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications and has presented over 120 papers, tutorials, workshops and panels at national and international events.

Manitoba eHealth Conference

For those interested....

Save the date: the Manitoba eHealth conference is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012 at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg. Our theme for 2012, On the Right Track, sets the stage for dialogue about how far our province has come and where we are going. We hope that you will consider attending what is sure to be another exciting and informative conference this year.

We have attached a call for abstracts for the conference presentations, which you can also access at http://www.manitoba-ehealth.ca/conference/conf2012Abstracts.html. We encourage you to distribute it to your team members to see if any projects or programs meet the submission guidelines, as it is a great opportunity to share your successes on a provincial level. The deadline for submissions is May 25, 2012.

RNFOO 2012, ONIG Award Recipients

At RNFOO's annual Gala on May 2nd, 2012 in Toronto, the recipients of the ONIG Award were recognized for their achievements in informatics. Congratulations to both Julie and Kristine for winning the 2012 Ontario Nursing Informatics Group (ONIG) awards!! Their respective bios can be found below.

Julie Kwan

Throughout her career, Julie has worked in hospital, long-term care, community, complex continuing care and government settings, always fully supporting safety and quality improvement initiatives. Her area of specialty is facilitating change by integrating clinical informatics with best practice, which has shown to improve delivery of patient care and enhance the work life of nurses. Julie is interested in leading future quality initiatives, with hopes that she will have a positive impact on the health of all Ontarians. While working full- time and raising two young children, Julie also works towards obtaining her Master of Nursing at the University of Toronto.

Kristine Newman

Kristine is presently a PhD Nursing Candidate at the University of Toronto working with Dr. Diane Doran. Her background is in professional practice, nursing education, rehabilitation nursing and she currently holds her CNA certification in Rehabilitation Nursing. Kristine also has interests in nursing education, knowledge translation and informatics.
