Busy summer? Not having the time or the budget to go on a long holiday doesn’t mean you have to spend the whole season brooding at home – how about planning a weekend trip (or several!) to help you survive a summer full of work? It sure is annoying to see how all your friends enjoy the sun while you stay home being responsible, but there is a way of making the most of it. If you’re living in Barcelona you are in a privileged location to enjoy the summer as much as anybody else. You don’t believe us? Take a look at these 5 top weekend trips from Barcelona.

The incredibly beautiful town of Cadaqués is one of Catalonia’s most beloved destinations among locals and foreigners. This picturesque fishermen’s village is of great importance in Catalan culture thanks to its ties to some of the most important Catalan creators, such as artists Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró or writer Josep Pla. You will be delighted by walking along the shore and the beautiful Modernist-style streets, and if you like Instagramming prepare to have your fill, as the picturesque white houses and colourful boats at the beach will surely look incredibly beautiful in your feed. Cadaqués is located at a 3-hour bus ride from Barcelona: it’s built around the Cadaqués Bay, located in the Cap de Creus. You can also visit the house of Salvador Dalí, which is nearby.

How about a weekend in a beautiful Spanish city that is often overlooked? Zaragoza isn’t one of Spain’s most visited destinations, but it has one of the most impressive and beautiful basilicas you’ll ever see. It’s so large that it can be seen from outside the city as you approach it by far. Located next to the river, the colourful Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar was first built in the 16th century, but the baroque finishing modifications were concluded in the 18th. In Zaragoza you can also visit the most important Islamic fortress located in Spain outside Andalucía, the Alfajería, and the fine Goya Museum, which has the largest collection of works by Francisco de Goya after El Prado Museum in Madrid. There’s more: Food is amazing! You can take the bus, the train, or go by car from Barcelona – it’s three hours away.

The town hides much more than the fortress (as if that wasn’t reason enough to go!), as there is more to see than the citadel. Some other beautiful monuments are the Basilica of St. Nazaire and St. Celse, the Cathedral and the Church of St. Vincent, as well as the Port Marengo Bridge. The best option to go there is with a car rental as you will also be able to enjoy the views of the beautiful southern France along the way. Ibiza is famous for its clubs and its nightlife, but you can actually find whatever you need to find – either clubbing or chilling, as its beaches of white sand and turquoise waters are enough to make you forget all about your troubles. The best way to go (and the only way to go if you only have the weekend, as ferry trips take quite a few hours) is by plane – a short 45 minute flight will take you straight to this paradisiac combination of clubbing and dreamy beaches.

It sure is a more popular destination during the winter months due to the many ski resorts located there, but there is plenty to do in the Pyrenees during the summer as well. If you like hiking, it’s the best possible weekend trip from Barcelona for you. You can visit the picturesque little town of Andorra La Vella and even do some adventure sports – you will find several agencies in town. The best way to go is with a car rental (less than 3 hours from Barcelona), but don’t forget to pack lightly as you will surely want to do some shopping there – Andorra is famous for its low taxed items as well as for its beautiful landscapes.

As you probably know if you’re living in Barcelona, each neighbourhood of the city has its own personality and history. The history of the city is explanation enough: until the second half of the 19th century, the upper neighbourhoods of Barcelona were independent towns that would be annexed to the capital with the construction of its largest district, L’Eixample, which would transform Barcelona into the city we know today.

Those towns-turned-neighbourhoods, as well as other neighbourhoods of Barcelona such as Poble Sec, Sants or Poble Nou, have kept their very own festivities, which take place during a week or two at some point in the year. And the super famous Festa Major de Gràcia are the most famous, appreciated and unique of all – prepare to learn why!

The festival of Gràcia is similar to many other neighbourhood festivals in some ways: there are concerts and performances all around, street food, parties in the streets, castellers and activities for children and adults organised by different local organisations. But there is something else that no other neighbourhood has and that makes this festival the most unique one in Barcelona: the street decorations. Now, when we say street decorations we’re referring to something else than lanterns and streamers, at least in the case of Gràcia. The neighbours group together into commissions for each of the streets and come up with an idea, a concept that they will transform into some of the most amazing decorations you can imagine. Each of the street becomes something else, a universe, an atmosphere that transports you under the sea, to the sky, to fantasy land, California or to a pirate movie, and it’s peopled by creatures, animals, people or characters. The neighbourhood then celebrates a contest among all the participant associations to award the most amazing decorations.

So, are you ready for Barcelona’s most unique festivities? This year you will be able to attend to the 201st edition of the Festa Major de Gràcia, from the 15th to the 21st of August.

Unless you’ve spent the past two years living under a rock, you will be aware of the success of escape rooms, a kind of role game that locks you in a space where you need to solve a mystery: how to get out.

The popularity of escape rooms is recent, but what you may not know is that the game itself is quite new as well: the first one dates from 2007 and it was held in Kyoto, Japan. The game started appearing more and more around Asia, and then extended to the United States, Canada and Eastern Europe. Now we have many escape rooms in Barcelona, as the escape room fever has extended to Europe, and it’s no surprise: the appeal of the theatrical, together with an adrenaline rush: more than an hour of fun and adventures we don’t usually have in our everyday lives. What’s not to like?

So we can establish that going to an escape room can be quite fun, but now we have to choose. These are a few of our favourite ones in the city of Barcelona:

The house of whispers: If what you like is horror, this escape room will make you feel like you’re in a horror movie: 75 minutes of ghosts, paranormal activity and haunted houses. The adrenaline rush is guaranteed!

Escape Barcelona: In this escape room you will find four different adventure games that will make you feel like Indiana Jones. It has two different locations: In Santa Coloma you can play their games Jurassic Land and Alien: Origin, while in their location in the neighbourhood of Horta you can play the Lost Temple and the Curse of the Pharaoh.

Jigsaw Escape Room: Jigsaw is our favourite act in Horror Box, a company that offers three different horror-themed escaped room. It’s named after the evil killer of the Saw movie series, so you know what the topic must be… Will you get out alive?

Juego Enigma: A classic enigma game that will make you feel like a hero: you need to save the world from a lethal virus, so you better get to it…

Of course, you can always go on a day trip somewhere, but sometimes we’re not in the mood for that kind of planning or we just don’t have enough time. In Barcelona, you can always find what you need in the beach, but if you prefer the green landscapes of the mountains, there is a place where the locals go when they have a bit of time: the Carretera de les Aigües.

It’s the preferred location by the locals to go cycling or hiking in the city, since it’s easily accessible (you just have to take the FGC train to Avinguda Tibidabo and walk up) and provides nature as well as a wonderful view of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. You will find many families, cyclists and hikers in this 10 km long road, and you can be one of them for the day.

There are many smaller routes that you can take to go further into the mountain forests, or you can choose to go to the Tibidabo amusement park if you’re in the mood for something fun or if you’re hiking with children.

Did you know that until the 19th century Barcelona wasn’t nearly as large as it is today? The Eixample, the expansion district that can be seen as a large grid from the sky, wasn’t built until then, and it brought Barcelona and the surrounding towns together. That’s right – all the upper neighbourhoods of Barcelona were independent towns until then. Today we’re going to pay a visit to one of them, beautiful Horta, which means ‘vegetable garden’ in Catalan. Horta, known as Sant Joan d’Horta before being annexed to the city, was an independent town until 1904. It’s located in the valley between the Collserola mountains, the Peira Hills, La Rovira, Carmel and the Creueta del Coll, and agriculture was the main economic activity – as its own name suggests!

In the following article we’re going to take you on a tour around Horta so you get to know one of the most charming and unknown places of Barcelona, where you’ll get a glimpse of how this famous city was like a century ago. Enjoy!

Are you ready for our tour around Horta? We’re going to start in beautiful carrer d’Aiguafreda, also known as the street of the laundresses, which was another of the most prominent economic activities in the old town of Horta. The laundresses made a living of washing the clothes of Horta’s rich families, and you could see them carrying the laundry along this little street.

Now we’ll walk until Plaça d’Eivissa, a very small square that concentrates most of the social life of the neighbourhood. If you’re hungry, pay a visit to El Quimet d’Horta, which offers some of the best sandwiches in Barcelona. Then we’ll go on until La Clota, a tiny neighbourhood full of little streets that keeps its rural and ancient flare and where you’ll be able to see old low houses typical from the upper towns of Barcelona, now the upper neighbourhoods. Finally, we’ll start going up to see Horta’s most famous attractions, Horta’s Park Labyrinth, a beautiful historical labyrinth where you can see many statues, a neoclassical garden from the 18th century and a romantic garden from the 19th. But before getting there we can take a look at two of Horta’s most famous masias (country house), Can Travi and Can Cortada, which are nowadays renowned restaurants.

Did you like our little tour around Horta? If you spend a day in this charming neighbourhood you’ll feel like you’re very far from Barcelona, as it keeps the old spirit of the area almost intact.

If you had to pick the most famous dishes of Spanish cuisine, you’d surely mention tapas and paella, but there are other comfort foods which could be considered also typically Spanish… Even if almost any cuisine in the world has its own version of it. We’re referring to the basic of the basics: the sandwich, known in Barcelona as bocadillo, bocata (in Spanish) or entrepà (in Catalan). The best sandwiches in Barcelona may not be your typical sandwich, but we assure you they’re delicious. You can find bocadillos with many ingredients and you can find the most typical ones, which have just a couple and are delicious in its simplicity. In Barcelona the bread (most times, French baguettes or rustic style) usually comes rubbed with tomato and with delicious olive oil, as pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato) is one of the bases of Catalan cuisine, but you can ask for it with just the olive oil. You’ll find the sandwiches with just one ingredient, like serrano ham or omelette, are all that you need – but there are other more varied options equally satisfying. We’ve prepared a short list of the places where you can find the best sandwiches in Barcelona that include all sorts of them!

Conesa: It’s probably the most famous sandwich bar in the city – a true classic! The specialise in hot sandwiches with Catalan sausages and sauces. It’s located in Plaça Sant Jaume and there is usually a long queue, but if you’re lucky you may be able to enjoy your meal in one of their little tables.

Mendizábal: One of the most unique places in Barcelona – it used to be just a stand in the street (C/Junta de Comerç, 2), but now it has a small space inside and a very sought-after terrace. They offer a varied option of sandwiches, both the simple-but-delicious kind and the several-ingredients kind, all made with local produce and love.

Entrepanes Díaz: A traditional bar full of locals that you could easily skip… But you’d made a mistake. Their star sandwich is the ‘Antxon’, with potatoes, egg and chistorra. Located in C/Pau Claris, 189.

El Quimet d’Horta: Nothing too original, but perfect and delicious – everything a bocadillo needs to be. Located in Plaça d’Eivissa, 10.

Summer is a busy time in Barcelona – even before it starts! June is still officially a spring month, but those who live in Barcelona know very well that in this beautiful city, June feels like summer. Those who organise the events know it too, and festival season starts pretty early in the Catalan capital. In the last days of May and first days of June, locals and visitors can enjoy Primavera Sound, the most eclectic and probably most ambitious festival in the country, and one of the best in Europe. But those who aren’t new to Barcelona’s festival season save some energy and some money for the second round, which takes places two short weeks after. We’re referring, of course, to one of the most prestigious electronic music festivals in the world, Sónar, which this year celebrates a very special edition: it celebrates its 25th anniversary!

Sonar started in 1994 with the subtitle ‘Festival de Música Avanzada y Arte Multimedia’, that is, Advanced Music and Multimedia Art Festival, which says a lot about its spirit, that ambitions going beyond music and reflecting, during the three days it lasts, the best of electronic culture and creativity. That ambition and spirit goes deeper than in many other festivals, and doesn’t settle for a couple of interesting art projections. Since its beginnings, Sónar has organised a sort of parallel festival for professionals related to the festival themes, such as recording companies, video artists, filmmakers and sound artists. Nowadays, this parallel festival is called Sonar+D. The festival sells delegate passes that include an entry to all the Sónar by Day shows.

And that’s the other defining characteristic of this wonderful festival. Two atmospheres, two settings, two festivals in one: Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night, and you choose which one you’d rather enjoy – that if you don’t decide to enjoy both of them, which is also possible. Sónar by Day is a bit cheaper and takes place in Fira Montjuïc, right next to Plaça Espanya, while Sonar by Night takes places in a bigger place in Fira Gran Via.

But let’s talk now about the acts, which are still the main attraction of this wonderful festival that attracts a wide audience from all around the world. We’re going to explore the best of both Sónar worlds – Day and Night.

There are many famous names in the electronic world in Sónar by Day 2018 – Laurent Garnier, and old friend of the festival, will play on Thursday (and also on Saturday night!), as will Monochrome, Absolute Terror and futurists Sinjin Hawke & Zora Jones. On Friday it’s almost mandatory to see Ólafur Arnalds, Alva Noto and national star Rosalía, a cantaora that will surprise us with something very different from what she usually does. On Saturday, our favourites are Second Woman and unique Maribou State. Special mention to the super collaboration DESPACIO, which brings together 2manydjs and James Murphy in a unique experience where the stage is on the dancefloor thanks to a circular sound system – they play all three days of Sonar by Day, so missing it would be almost a crime!

Gorillaz, Diplo (who plays also during the day), Modeselektor, Bonobo and Dj Harvey make for an unforgettable Friday night, but Saturday is no worse: LCD Soundystem, Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin Close, Benjamin Damage, John Talabot… And Radiohead’s leader Thom Yorke himself!

This year there are two special nights for Sónar fans, and they are indeed for the fans (or for those who haven’t recovered yet from Primavera Sound and can’t make it), as they’ll have to purchase special tickets not included in the full festival pass. On Thursday night the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and Brad Lubman will play Terry Riley’s iconic IN C, a key piece in minimalist music. On Sunday, the closing act will be performed by two amazing artists in a duet, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, who will offer an unforgettable performance and not just thanks to their amazing music – the setting will play a part as well, as it will be celebrated in Barcelona’s amphitheatre, the Teatre Grec. There is certainly no better way of putting the cherry on top!

Spring is here, and, with the good weather, all outdoors music events come to Barcelona. You may be quite busy among all the Brunch in the park events that take place in the weekends, but you should save some energy (and money!) for the many wonderful festivals that are celebrated during the summer. The first one is Barcelona’s most popular, Primavera Sound, which is celebrating yet a new edition with the most eclectic line-up in the country. The numbers of Primavera Sound are astounding, and even though there are still some mysteries to be revealed for this year’s edition, last year’s speak for themselves: over 200 bands, over 200.000 people attending and over 10 stages – and that just in the Parc de Fòrum, its main location, not counting the other stages located around the city. All that, plus the undeniable quality of its line-up, makes Primavera Sound one of the most ambitious festivals in Europe. And the best one to start festival season!

But what to see in Primavera Sound? That’s always a bit of an issue for everybody who goes, as the wide offer forces us to make some hard choices. However, the festival is all the more enjoyable if you know the line-up a little bit, so we’re going to tell you what is, for us, the best of Primavera Sound 2018. Get your Spotify ready!

What makes Primavera Sound one of the greatest festivals in Europe is the variety and eclecticism of the smaller names in the line-up – that is also how the festival has managed to get a very loyal audience in the city. However, as any good festival, it also has a few big names worth considering. These are this year’s top headliners:

Björk: After cancelling her concert in Primavera Sound a few years back, she’s coming as the main name for Friday.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Nick Cave is no rookie in Primavera Sound either – but we’re sure nobody’s tired of seeing him!

Fever Ray: The half of The Knife will be presenting her very much expected second album.

The National: The rock band from Ohio will face a real challenge trying to better the wonderful concert they offered in Parc del Fòrum a few years ago!

Migos: The rap trio shows how much Primavera Sound is welcoming genres that weren’t so present in previous editions.

Arctic Monkeys: Another one of the most expected rock acts.

Lorde: The first Primavera for the famous singer.

As we were saying, the smaller names in the line-up have made Primavera Sound the great festival that it is… And this year is no exception. Besides enjoying great music, seeing the less known bands also guarantees you a spot in the smaller but more comfortable stages – it’s worth moving a little bit instead of staying always in the crowded area where all the headliners play. Prepare for wonderful names such as Panda Bear, The War on Drugs, Mogway, Lykke Li, Ty Segall or Charlotte Gainsbourg. The fans of electronic music will be able to enjoy Four Tet, Lindstrom, Floating Points, James Holden & The Animal Spirits or John Hopkins (take a look at the Primavera Bits line-up!).

Primavera Sound isn’t the cheapest of festivals, but it always comes with presents for the locals of Barcelona thanks to its ‘Primavera a la Ciutat’ (that is, Primavera in the city). This includes several gigs in Barcelona’s Sala Apolo and La (2) de Apolo, as well as in the Auditorium of Barcelona. However, the events at those spaces are also exclusive to those who’ve bought the ticket. The most interesting part of Primavera a la Ciutat is… the free concerts! The opening act of Wednesday 30th of May in Parc del Fòrum is completely free (except for the two concerts that are celebrated in the Auditori del Fòrum), and this year the party is brought to us by bands such as Bell and Sebastian or Wolf Parade.

But there is more: for the third year in a row, Primavera Sound has a present for the festival-goers that never have enough, and for all those who couldn’t afford the festival ticket. The Parc del Fòrum will close its doors on Sunday morning, but on Sunday afternoon the party will continue in the centre of Barcelona thanks to Primavera al Raval, which is celebrated in CCCB. A free mini-festival with Rhye, Waxahatche, Fermin Muguruza or Tigercats, among many others.

So, are you ready for Primavera Sound? It’s the first, but not the last, of the many great music festivals you can attend in Barcelona during the summer. In fact, the city has so much to offer that you could enjoy the whole festival season without leaving. Next one? Sonar!

As you probably know, every neighbourhood in Barcelona celebrates its own week of festivities along the year, and Gràcia’s are probably the most famous of all thanks to the neighbour’s hard work and creativity in decorating the streets, creating different and mesmerising universes in each and every one of them. But since we still have to wait a little until August, which is when that is going to take place, what about enjoying another one of Gràcia’s most iconic parties?

Sant Medir is celebrated on the 3rd of March to commemorate Medir, a peasant that, according to the legend, lived in the Collserola mountain who was planting beans when he came across bishop Sever, who was running away from emperor Diocletian. The Bishop asked him to tell the truth if someone asked about him, because he was determined to die before betraying his faith, and once he left, the beans started to grow miraculously. Soon after, the Bishop’s pursuers arrived and Medir did tell the truth – but they didn’t believe him and tortured him until his death. But the origin of this particular festivity comes many years later, when baker Josep Vidal i Granés vowed to walk every year until the chapel of Sant Medir if his health improved. Every year more people joined his pilgrimage, and the baker, when he came back, would throw beans to the peoples who were in the streets as a homage to the saint.

And with the years, the beans have been slowly replaced by candy, which is the most distinctive thing about Sant Medir’s celebrations. The different groups of participants will be parading from 10 in the morning on along the streets of Gràcia, playing music and dancing, and at 8 in the evening the official parade will start, with all the carriages and the music… And all the candy too!

Undoubtedly, this is one of Gràcia’s most charming festivities, albeit also one of the most unknown. But if you want to experience Barcelona like the locals, don’t forget to walk around this iconic neighbourhood on Saturday the 3rd!

One of the best things about Barcelona is its wide and incredibly rich cultural offer. Art, music and cinema are some of the city’s main protagonists, and it is hard to find a weekend where there isn’t something going on – almost impossible, in fact! The attractive cultural offer of the city is so wide that locals often have trouble deciding among the many events that are held… And the month of March isn’t going to be any different! In the following lines we’ll focus on two film festivals smaller than Barcelona’s most famous ones (which you can read about in our article about cinema festivals in Barcelona), but that have an equally interesting selection of films. Keep reading to find out all about them!

The Olalà! festival seems to have arrived to stay. This independent French film festival is being celebrated for the first time between the Institut Français of Barcelona and the popular Texas cinemas. Even if French cinema has a big presence in the city, this is the first festival of the sort. From the 1st to the 8th of March you will be able to enjoy 10 films that had never been premièred in the country plus a retrospective of film director Cédric Klapish, known for movies like L’auberge Espagnol.

But France isn’t going to be the only protagoniss of this month’s big screens, as Casa Asia starts a cycle on Iranian film that will help the locals discover that Iran is not to be ignored concerning filmmaking. Unlike the Ohlalà film festival, this is not the first time Casa Asia organises such a program, but stays loyal to its purpose of projecting productions by the new generations of Iranian filmmakers. Enjoy a different movie every Saturday until the 14th of April in the Girona cinemas for only 3,5 euros!

As you can see, anyone who’s a bit hungry for culture has a lot to do in Barcelona, thanks to these amazing opportunities to enjoy works that are not so easy to access in regular cinemas. Enjoy!
