For many years I've been pointing out the basics of economics concerning concepts like "free" and the importance of marginal cost to pricing in an efficient market. After one such recent post, I got an angry email from a college professor who has worked in the entertainment industry for many years, telling me that clearly I had never taken an economics class. That, of course, is not true. I took a great many economics classes, and learned the economics I talk about here on the site from some of the best economists around. Either way, I do wonder what this same individual would say upon reading well known (and greatly respected) economist Dean Baker's latest column about how The Pirate Party has got it right on copyright:

Near the top of the list of the Pirate Party's demons is copyright protection, and rightly so. Copyright protection is an antiquated relic of the late Middle Ages that has no place in the digital era. It is debatable whether such government-granted monopolies were ever the best way to finance the production of creative and artistic work, but now that the internet will allow this material to be instantly transferred at zero cost anywhere in the world, copyrights are clearly a counter-productive restraint on technology.

As every graduate of an introductory economics class knows, the market works best when items sell at their marginal cost. That means we maximize efficiency when recorded music, movies, video games and software are available to users at zero cost. The fees that the government allows copyright holders to impose create economic distortions in the same way that tariffs on imported cars or clothes lead to economic distortions.

The major difference is that the distortions from copyright protection are much larger. While tariffs on cars or clothes would rarely exceed 20-30 per cent, the additional cost imposed by copyright protection is the price of the product. Movies that would be free in a world without copyright protection can cost $20-$30. The same is true of video games, and the price of copyrighted software can run into the thousands of dollars.

Baker goes on to suggest some alternative means to fund such creative works in a world without copyright, including ideas like "artistic freedom vouchers" that would give people a refundable tax credit on supporting creativity, on the condition that any of the creativity funded by such money would not be able to protect it with copyright for a period of time. I find such program interesting, though I do wonder if they'd even be necessary. As we've been seeing over and over again, all sorts of interesting new business models are springing up that have nothing to do with copyright. As there is demand for creativity, I fully expect more and more such models to continue to show up as well. What I fear is that the focus by those who benefit excessively from the monopoly rents and protectionism of copyright, will lead to cutting off innovation or killing off interesting and more efficient business models, before they have a chance to evolve.

Contrary to what some like to say about me, I am not convinced that copyright should be done away with completely. I do think that it needs significant reform. I just want that reform to be based on actual evidence and understanding of basic economics rather than faith and the demands of those who have benefited excessively from it, over those who have been held back because of it.

In October 2011 it was reported that the US government is looking into claims made by Telecomix that the Syrian government is using the company's products (Blue Coat) to restrict internet access. I don't need to look in Syria for that issue is closer to home at the local library. JPM Synthetic instruments go KaBoom once. JPM and other banks have a lucrative money printing press called synthetic CDO CDS's and other derivatives. They have been taking a huge vigorish as they get rich while hiding the dirt behind the illusion of risk neutrality. Why don't we just call this whole animal farm of synthetic bets fraud and be done with it. The way its stands we could face a huge monetary contraction as all this stimulative money from derivatives gets sucked out of the system thereby forcing the destruction of innocent savings. It was a matter of coincidence that I asked the rhetorical question yesterday as to why JPM was trying to capture money in the Lehman and MF Global bankruptcies. Money that,can be alleged that, it was the custodian and fiduciary of, other peoples money (aka savings). To add insult to injury our politicos are interested in the same old game of divide and conquer. This time its GLBT's

Marine and land life in Alaska is being sickened and dieing off from an unknown causes as a wave of Fukushima nuclear radiation heads toward the coast of California.

The raw story just ran a corporate media article acknowledging the discovery of Iodine radiation in kelp off the coast of California.

The story added few details to what has already been widely reported in the alternative media. Most notably was the iodine was first detected in the water within a month of the Fukushima meltdown and the double speak over the safety because the levels are supposedly relatively low. Relative to what?

LOS ANGELES — Radioactive iodine was found in kelp off the US West Coast following last year’s earthquake-triggered Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdown, according to a new study.

It was already known that radioactive iodine 131 (131-I), carried in the atmosphere, made it across the Pacific within days of the March 11, 2011 tsunami disaster, albeit in minuscule amounts.

But marine biologists at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) discovered the radioactive isotope in ocean kelp, which is “one of the strongest plant accumulators of iodine,” within a month of the accident.

“We measured significant, although most likely non-harmful levels of radioactive iodine in tissue of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera,” said Steven L. Manley, author of the study with Christopher G. Lowe

“Although it is probably not harmful for humans because it was relatively low levels, it may have affected certain fish that graze on the tissue because fish have a thyroid system that utilizes iodine.”

A festering economic collapse may be probable, while US insurrection met with a rational US response is not probable on both counts. US citizens will be structurally and culturally tuned more towards resignation. The US government will be incapable of doing anything except spinning uselessly on the last problem.. It is of course it is possible to be ahead of the curve on everything, to anticipate concerns, and then address them ahead of time, to avoid crisis points, and to negotiate enough time needed to allow change to occur to mutual benefit... A good place to start would be the protection of capital and the restoration of the rule of law. That is not going to happen thus economic collapse remains a huge possibility to which nobody worldwide would be able to escape unscathed. Its best to concentrate therefore on what you value and what is really wealth and important to you and your children. As for the US government we need to reestablished the informed part of informed consent, as we realize and respond to our government being a blocking force to progress and thus a major part of at the current crisis and future problem.
