			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you are familiar with <a href="http://www.webex.fr/" target="_blank" title="vidéoconférence, net meeting, web conférence">Webex</a>, <a href="http://www.adobe.com/fr/products/connect/" target="_blank" title="Macromedia Breeze">Adobe Connect</a>, <a href="http://www.saba.com/products/centra/" target="_blank" title="to share knowledge and exchange information with customers, partners, prospects and employees around the world in real-time?">Centra</a> or even with the solution described in <a href="http://ocarbone.free.fr/blog/?p=206" title="Free collaborative tools for elearning">Free collaborative tools for elearning</a>, you may be wishing to get rid of kilometers to prospect or meet your customers.</p>
<p><strong>E-meeting is getting more and more common for companies when presenting their products range or services.</strong> They may aim at adressing more people, at getting rid of physical frontiers or quite simply at reducing costs and time. In fact e-meeting may not always take place without  physical meeting at one point or another&#8230; although undoubtedly it helps to value such meetings.</p>
<p>Here is a good illustration for the e-meeting concept:</p>

<p>E-meetings are organized via tools named &#8220;virtual classes&#8221;. Over last years those classes got to be more easy to get installed. Ergonomy got better, commercial offers were more numerous which means today that <strong>their use is at everyone&#8217;s stake</strong>.</p>
<p>To get an idea about the advantages of the tools, why don&#8217;t you start using them to enhance your phone meetings first? When you publish a slideshow, it will help having your message spread and <strong>if you use such solutions you will get ahead from your competitors</strong>.</p>
<h3>VoIP or phone communication?</h3>
<p>Most of virtual classes offer VoIP solutions to communicate with microphones and headphones. There are two advantages:</p>
<ul>
<li>no communication cost</li>
<li>recording of synchronous exchanges with screen share</li>
</ul>
<p>Yet the host will have to get used to VoIP  inconvenients: a short delay of 1 to 3 seconds.<br />
As to participants,  using VoIP implies they have some technical abilities and a high quality Internet connexion. In other cases<strong>, most people will choose to communicate on the phone</strong>.</p>
<p>Whatever you decide to do, <strong>you should begin the meeting on the phone thus you will be able to accompany participants in handling their connexion </strong>to the e-meeting  and you will be sure they won&#8217;t miss the appointment <img src='http://ocarbone.free.fr/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> According to their number, I strongly advise you to begin that way. What&#8217;s more, it is much helpful in case of technical problems.  Many will pay phone calls rather than cancel a meeting!</p>
<p>Participants being at ease is important. <strong>Whether by VoIP or phone, it is better to use a headphone with integrated microphone.</strong> The headphone will keep your hands free and also will low down surroundings sounds.</p>
<p>Yet on the phone there is no recording possible&#8230; too bad as it is much rewarding to learn from them about their abilities&#8230; and very useful for participants to watch meetings again!</p>
<h3>How to use chat?</h3>
<p>Chat does not permit true exchanges although it turns out to be useful during a meeting:</p>
<ul>
<li>to get the assurance that participants can hear one another</li>
<li>to allow participants to speak one after the other (the host is the one to be heard otherwise)</li>
<li>to encourage participants to ask questions</li>
<li>to have private exchanges (ask for one person to intervene in particular, for instance)</li>
</ul>
<p>In a webinar with several participants, you may find it interesting to have two hosts at the same time. One will give the tune and the other will concentrate on chat: communication will therefore be nice both orally and on the screen!</p>
<p>Chat is completeley useless in the case of a one-to-one meeting.</p>
<h3>What about screen sharing?</h3>
<p>Screen sharing makes it posible to view the host&#8217;s screen for participants. Technical solutions are getting more efficient, thanks to Flash technology for one: screen sharing is among the most common functionalities.</p>
<p>There are two types:</p>
<ul>
<li>slideshow publication</li>
<li>application sharing whether Desk or software</li>
</ul>
<p>Slideshow publication is being democratized thanks to 2.0 collaborative tools, or the import of Powerpoint slideshows. If that functionality turns out to be sufficient for your projects, have a look at <a href="http://ocarbone.free.fr/blog/?p=173" title="Une plateforme de collaboration synchrone gratuite !" target="_blank">vyew.com</a>.</p>
<p>When sharing your screen, choose one or two applications not the whole desktop. That way you will open a booknote unviewed by other participants ;). On the contrary ask for participants to have their desktop shared. You&#8217;ll get an overall  idea that will help:</p>
<ul>
<li>identify unwished software (that is heavy on the Web for instance)</li>
<li>check if participants are doing something else (personal emailing, chat or whatever!)</li>
<li>identify specific technical troubles (Windows security or virus alerts)</li>
</ul>
<p>Whatever technical solution is choosen when presenting a software, <strong>you are bound to notice a delay of seconds between what you show and what is seen by participants</strong>. Quite unnoticeable in the very beginning it grows more and more and counts up to several seconds 20 minutes later. It depends on each person&#8217;s web connexion (host and participants). As broadband varies, the delay will change accordingly during the session.</p>
<p>To try and reduce or stop such delay, virtual classes propose to postpone sharing or modify screen appearance frequency. You may also wish to reinitialize you connexion.</p>
<h3>What about video?</h3>
<p><strong>Video exchanging means all particpants have a high quality Internet connexion.</strong> That is most unrealistic thus to get video all along the session. On the contrary it may be used as a welcoming video introducing people and also at the end when quitting the session on friendly faces.</p>
<p>If meetings do require video most of the time, I advise you check every Internet connexion that will be used! Note that personal ADSL connexion (at home) is often better than that at work. Indeed if better in quality undoubtedly, professionnal connexion is shared by numerous people.</p>
<h3>Get trained!</h3>
<p>Do you wish to host suh a meeting? Then connect yourself to a test webinar (provided that you can handle two computers at work: the first one as host and the other as participant). <strong>You can get trained by watching the participant&#8217;s screen: you will get an idea how works the delay mentioned  in the post</strong>.</p>

Le premier est la mémorisation. L&#8217;enseignant conserve grâce au logiciel les tracés effectués à l&#8217;aide du TNI, ceux qu&#8217;il a effectués mais aussi et surtout ceux des élèves. Il dispose ainsi des remarques, des propositions des élèves de la classe de &#8230; Cet aspect est donc d&#8217;un grand intérêt pédagogique. Au tableau blanc classique, conserver les traces des propositions élèves avec leur intitulé exact s&#8217;avère impossible mais le TNI conserve tout. Il permet de valoriser le travail des élèves. (&#8230;) Le second est l&#8217;interactivité avec les élèves. Le TNI facilite la participation des élèves et les motive davantage. leur attention est aussi beaucoup plus forte. Apprendre en faisant est de toute façon beaucoup plus efficace.<br />

<h2>Du tableau noir au &#8220;cyber-tableau&#8221;</h2>

Logiciel de vidéoconférence sketch pad, service inclus dans Skype. Projet de Alain qui voulait expérimenter la vidéo-conférence en lien avec l&#8217;univers social (géographie). Le projet a ensuite évolué en mathématique et le français. Avec ce type de projet, il arrive qu&#8217;il y ait des pépins techniques; comme avec n&#8217;importe quel logiciel. Difficulté aussi d&#8217;arrimer l&#8217;horaire des deux classes participantes. Difficulté de Sketch pad: Il ne faut pas oublier de cliquer les paramètres pour utiliser l&#8217;application avec Skype, sinon il n&#8217;est pas possible d&#8217;utiliser l&#8217;outil. Les élèves ont installé Skype à la maison puisqu&#8217;il est gratuit. Il est possible de présumer qu&#8217;ils utilisent l&#8217;outil en dehors de la classe. Donc, l&#8217;outil favorise la communication et la télécollaboration; ce qui change la façon d&#8217;enseigner. Skype demeure sécuritaire car il faut accepter d&#8217;échanger avec d&#8217;autres personnes. C&#8217;est une bonne occasion d&#8217;éduquer les élèves à une utilisation adéquate des outils de communication. Le projet suscite la motivation des élèves et permet le développement des compétences. Interaction intéressante entre une école de la ville et une école de la campagne.<br />

The video is indeed sensational : it does look like an hologram. Although it appears on a huge screenplay in a dark conference room.  Video images are high definition and human sized. As to technology it is no real innovation though.</p>

Je viens de réaliser un plugin pour Dokeos. Il a pour but d&#8217;afficher une carte Googlemaps sur la page d&#8217;accueil qui localise les tuteurs et apprenants de la plateforme. Le simple visiteur peut afficher le profil des tuteurs mais pas des apprenants. L&#8217;utilisateur logué peut afficher tous les profils dans l&#8217;infobulle.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When participating to other blog posts, I often find myself to defend the concept 2.0. Here is what I think of the phenomenon that includes Web 2.0, E-business 2.0, Enterprise 2.0, E-learning 2.0, Education 2.0.</p>
<h2>2.0 from the point of view of the technical expert</h2>
<p>The first websites were only 5 to 10 page sites, simple and with no interactivity. Technology has given tools to meet greater interactivity. The Flash format and the FLEX development solution are worthwhile, Xml is everywhere, AJAX is getting much present, widgets and mashup are common concepts to technical people.</p>
<p>The word 2.0 is there to define websites that use the latest technology tools to offer richer web media, that is more ergonomic, friendly and faster too. Users therefore can handle websites in a more efficient manner:  they benefit from the best of  NTIC!</p>
<p>In the same time softwares are downloadable online with offered services. The name for this is SaaS: Software as a Service.</p>
<p><strong>For a technician, the concept 2.0 is to be associated to specific technologies.</strong></p>
<h2>2.0 from the point of view of the user</h2>
<p>The first websites were only written pieces of information usually to be met in companies&#8217; traditional communication media. The  aim was that of advertising and marketing mostly. Html often was the langage used for such static websites and sometimes  you could come across images. Users would mainly check their email messages; in fact, there were few individuals implied.</p>
<p>Websites became more dynamic thanks to langages servers. Contents get richer and become true information sources. Thus for the user Internet is now something renewed with the first forums for instance.  Then are the wikis, the RSS flux, the blogs. From a simple reader he has become an author and a content producer.  There is new interactivity between users and websites&#8217; authors. And between users themselves. Possibly many people link P2P to Web 2.0.</p>
<p>There is another change with the websurfer adapting interfaces to his needs. Choice of language, of colors, of characters and above all of selected information. That way he can really get implied into the world web&#8230; and into social networking.</p>
<p>Creating 2.0 services has definitely allowed to get 2.0 successful. Websites are then dedicated to users&#8217; needs, that is the aim is to offer services rather than merely making profit. Creatives Commons licences officialized individuals&#8217; content production and sharing.</p>
<p><strong>For the user, Web 2.0 is a tool. It is an information tool that can be shared and can raise collaborative work. Undoubtedly many users get to the Web with the Web 2.0. Not before! </strong></p>
<h2>2.0 from the point of view of the sceptical people</h2>
<p>Web 2.0 is a marketing word, a buzzword.  In this respect Web 2.0 led to new commercial and marketing practices and/or abuses. Advertising is everywhere and sticks to users&#8217; profiles. Written information is reused improperly, even avatars are created with propaganda purpose! More chocking is the fact that detailed information can be gathered to know more about your personnality and about your opinions!</p>
<p><strong>This is much alarming indeed. Yet I don&#8217;t think  the phenomenon</strong><strong> 2.0 has anything to do with it, instead its use must be watched out!</strong></p>
<h2>E-business 2.0</h2>
<p>Here is a website <a href="http://www.richcommerce.fr" title="Interfaces riches et E-commerce" target="_blank">richcommerce.fr</a> that gives updated news and trends about rich interfaces regarding E-business, it was launched by <a href="http://www.fredcavazza.net/2008/01/24/un-blog-et-une-conference-dedies-au-rich-commerce/" target="_blank">Fred Cavazza</a> and <a href="http://www.ziserman.com/blog/2008/01/24/matinee-sur-le-richcommerce" target="_blank">François Ziserman</a>. The most interesting idea about E-business I read is there:  <a href="http://www.usages20.com/2007/10/18/vendre-du-textile-a-la-20/" title="Un post d'usage20.com : E-commerce 2.0" target="_blank">Vendre du textile à la 2.0</a> ! As one would expect it, E-business marketers know how to make money!</p>
<p><strong>E-business 2.0 is a reality: users&#8217; participation is even looked after.</strong></p>
<h2>Enterprise 2.0</h2>
<p>Enterprises obviously were to join the party! With langages servers came intranets. Gathering and capitalization are important words to all companies and computing solutions have always been looked after. At the beginning information was pushed to employees but after  a while new solutions were found to collect information. Web 2.0 has changed the way we use the Internet. Intranets take into account the capacity for employees to produce content. I stress on the fact that enterprises should consider the phenomenon 2.0.</p>
<p><strong>Enterprise 2.0 is necessary. There is a true change in employees regarding the phenomenon 2.0. </strong></p>
<h2>E-learning 2.0</h2>
<p>E-learning has been the first area to benefit from Web 2.0 technologies. Before this, e-learning platforms were only but static websites with no real success. Yet the concept E-learning 2.0 defines the place that is given to the user himself : he is in the heart of the learning solution and is no longer  a spectator only. E-learning 2.0 also means cooperation, exchange and content production between one employee to another or to others. As a conclusion I see no difference between e-learning and e-learning 2.0, but I do understand when a user or a customer rather uses the latter expression!</p>
<p><strong>E-learning 2.0 is no new, the fact that we say 2.0 is.</strong></p>
<h2>Education 2.0</h2>
<p>Here is an interesting  <a href="http://apprendre2point0.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=945551%3ATopic%3A6245" title="Apprendre 2.0, un réseau Ning dédié à la formation" target="_blank">discussion</a> about the concept Education 2.0 on the network Apprendre 2.0. It has to do with professionnal people willing to have the educational system evolve. To my opinion, the evolution that is needed has more to do with developing collaboration and exchange, with placing trainees in the heart of learning solutions, with transforming them into real actors rather than with using 2.0 technologies.</p>
<p><strong>I am professionnally tempted to believe in Education 2.0 indeed. It may only be a transition phase&#8230; so what!</strong></p>

<p>Last years users of open source solutions were to be met in training more often. <strong>The training activity is becoming one of the most representative indicators for the adoption of open source technology</strong>. <a href="http://www.ob2l.com/" title="L'observatoire du logiciel libre " target="_blank"><em>L&#8217;observatoire du logiciel libre</em></a>  - Observatory of Free Software - bases its analysis on developments in the training market and published a few days ago the &#8220;<em><strong>Baromètre des tendances 2007-2008 du logiciel libre</strong></em>&#8220;, that is the barometer for 2007-2008.</p>
<p>I was pleased to read that the Business Intelligence is the most dynamic segment with a growth of over 386%. <strong>The software Talend Open Studio is quoted many times and appears at the top of trends for 2007 and 2008!<br />

<strong>About the <em>Observatoire des logiciels libres</em></strong></p>
<p>The barometer was created by <a href="http://www.anaska.com/" title="Spécialiste de l'Open Source" target="_blank">Anaska</a> and <a href="http://www.ib-formation.fr/" title="Centre de Formation" target="_blank">ib-Groupe Cegos</a> in 2005. Its goal is to make a point every 6 months of the market of open source software based on the training market. All the indicators that appear in the survey are based on a comparison with a volume of activity between 2006 and 2007 and are based on a panel of about 2000 trained people.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Web 2.0 are tools that are real new opportunities for elearning trainers. ]]></description>

This month Isabelle is presenting a <a href="http://e-learningbretagne.blogspirit.com/" title="PDF: Web 2.0 et Formation" target="_blank">pdf</a> titled &#8220;State of the art of training and education in the Web 2.0&#8243;.</p>

<p><strong>Very pleasant to read! However <a href="ocarbone.free.fr/blog/?p=206" title="Free Elearning Tools">synchronous tools</a> are not that much emphasized. I mean the virtual classrooms, software and services dedicated to collaboration and instant messaging often associated to VoIP and video.</strong> These features make it possible to establish a direct and synchronous relationship between trainees and trainers&#8230; A relationship vital to the process for accompanying the training. These features allow to produce at distance the same quality as in traditional training.</p>
<p>These technologies must be accompanied by a strong leadership change so that users do not feel technology and distant training as a bad point.</p>
<p><strong>Years after, elearning remains worthwile.</strong> The elearning meets indeed several strong companies&#8217;needs:</p>
<ul>
<li>geographical constraints: grouping all participants in a single classroom</li>
<li>planning constraints: impossible to stop the production / matching the schedules of all participants</li>
<li>the most effective in the shortest time</li>
</ul>
<p>The synchronous technology meets the first constraint by allowing the organization of sessions with participants from different geographical areas. However, the animation of a collective session in elearning is not that easy. Many of the &#8220;<a href="http://www.speechi.net/fr/index.php/2007/11/29/quest-ce-quune-formation-objets-ouverts-et-objets-fermes" title="Signals" target="_blank">signals</a>&#8221; that the trainer is usually aware of won&#8217;t exist in virtual classrooms. The animation of a 10 people group is not easy in physical meetings, you can imagine the difficulties that may arise in elearning!</p>
<p><strong>The solution preferred by the majority of companies is therefore to organize short and individual courses.</strong> Is it financially worthwile? The elearning will eliminate costs generated by the training attendance (lack of office, transport, lunch, accommodation), the financial gain  is so important that individualized elearning training turns out indeed to be worthwile.</p>
<p>It should be noted that these tools won&#8217;t do everything! They are however interesting additions to any other educational solution. <strong>Used before or after traditional training or asynchronous training, these technologies help to enhance the interaction between participants and trainers</strong>.<strong><br />
</strong></p>

These allow technology to individualize training and meet the needs of the learner in the most efficient way possible.</strong> For all these reasons, the elearning surely has many good points to offer!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are more and more collaborative services that claim to be web2.0 and dedicated to individuals and small companies. Here are four of them: free and with <strong>similar features to the most famous virtual classes</strong>.</p>

<h2>SparkAngels</h2>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.spark-angels.com/pourquoi-spark-angels-2.html" title="the first online coaching service" target="_blank">SparkAngels</a> claims to be the first online coaching service</strong>. It is a collaborative tool limited to two people: a user and his coach, the <em>SparkAngel</em>.</p>
<p><strong>VoIP communication and instant messenger </strong>allow the two people to communicate. The service makes it possible to <strong>access the desktop from distance </strong>and to guide the user through popups for instance. Technically there is no need for any communication port but downloading may be required (Java Webstart app).</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.spark-angels.com/pourquoi-spark-angels-2.html" title="to tackle digital exclusion" target="_blank">The aim</a> is to tackle digital exclusion</strong> to give a solution so that &#8221; <em>skills among certain types of population may be shared with other people unfamiliar with technology</em>&#8220;. The thing now is to develop places where those people get access to computers and benefit from the solution.</p>
<p><strong>There is a professionnal offer too</strong>, it is possible to customize the application with personal logos instead of SparkAngel ones. Darty, a French company, chose their solution last month and proposes a distant DartyBox support. DartyBox is a French box to provide internet connexion, VoIP and video <img src='http://ocarbone.free.fr/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Widgets should soon be available to be inserted in websites to facilitate the relation between users and SparkAngel.</p>

<p>I read about it on <a href="http://www.elearning.fr/index.php?2007/09/25/47-elluminate" title="Elluminate" target="_blank">elearning.fr</a>, Elluminate provides a Java <strong>virtual class limited to 3 users but free</strong>! The look and the features are similar to the Centra Symposium virtual class. I used Centra for five years, here is a screenshot <a href="http://www.eweb-formation.fr/symposium.php" target="_blank">here</a>. Except for its old looking, it seems to be a complete solution and the company offers <strong>professional services</strong>.</p>

<h2>Streaming Rooms</h2>
<p><a href="http://www.streamingrooms.com/index.php/" title="free virtuals rooms" target="_blank">Streaming Rooms</a> provides <strong>free virtual rooms</strong> to organize your online meetings.</p>
<p>You can publish one or more video feeds: perfect if you want to aggregate videos from different users in a meeting! Only  communication is based solely on chat, there is no password protection, no possibility to publish diaporamas, no download zone&#8230; <strong>it seems the virtual class is dedicated to individuals only</strong>.</p>
<p>I found out that Jessy Cyganczuk, the streamingrooms developer, has built up the application in one week end, before going on holidays. Today he is concentrating on other projects <img src='http://ocarbone.free.fr/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':D' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>The service, that points out functionalities of an open source framework - <a href="http://cakephp.org" title="Open Source framework" target="_blank">CakePhp</a>, makes me think that:</p>

<li>it is necessary to test thoroughly any new 2.0 tool before considering it is worthwhile</li>
<li>the development for 2.0 tools is not always time-consuming</li>

<p>It is more and more common to get <strong>services with paid subscription to turn out free</strong>. Functionalities indeed may reveal restrictive but <strong>individuals or small companies should find themselves interested in them</strong>.</p>
<p>As far as I&#8217;m concerned, I prefer that solution to those relying on advertising! What&#8217;s more, a free service along with a commercial offer guarantees its perennity<strong>.</strong></p>

That is once again to synchronize your screen and that of one or more participants. <strong>The presentation at distance </strong>often requires a phone call or even an audioconference organization. Useful in the case of prospection, support or project management.</p>
<p>Here is what Epistema - the company - announces on its <a href="http://www.epistema.com/blog/fr/2007/08/07/toilettage-de-la-rentree-13/" target="_blank" title="Callexia - Epistema">blog</a> :</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.dokeos.com/" target="_blank" title="Learning Management Sytem">Dokeos</a> is a <strong>training solution that is available in open source</strong> - Learning Management System. Dokeos also is the name for the related company. They offer among  others a functionality for a <strong>virtual classroom</strong> they host&#8230; and rent. Yet it is possible to install the plugin (in free licence too) if you wish to get a Flash server.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been watching the evolution of the platform for several years now and I&#8217;m quite surprised to learn that the <a href="http://www.dokeos.com/download.php" target="_blank" title="Visio Conference with Dokeos"><span style="font-weight: bold">visio conference</span></a> module is <strong>now available in free licence.</strong> Most of Learning Management System platforms in open source have no streaming audio &amp; video functionalities.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold">Does it mean you can get the visio conference module for free ?</span> First, this Dokeos module requires a RED5 server &#8230;  I advise you to rely on Dokeos so that they help you with the installation and the following of the platform. I spent some years in a distant learning training center so take my word when I say <strong>do not undermine the necessary skills</strong> to manage those services!</p>

Once you registered, you can get access to a personal space where you can manage appointments. Except for the Flash plugin, there is <strong>no technical installation</strong> required. The platform allows to benefit from various solutions like elearning. No video but the main functionalities for a virtual classroom are there:</p>

<li><strong>blank board</strong> - the usual electronic paperboard</li>
<li><strong>slideshows</strong> - automatic PDF conversion, Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Flash animation</li>
<li><strong>screen share</strong> for slideshows viewing, work on the blank board and even more sharing of your desktop to handle a software</li>
<li><strong>instant messenger </strong>- public or private chat</li>
<li>free <strong>call conference</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Slideshows are often the main tool in a training course, that is in all training sessions you are likely to encounter the same suite. <a href="http://vyew.com" target="_blank" title="Plateforme de Collaboration Synchrone">http://vyew.com</a> makes it possible to save slideshows to reuse them.</p>
<p><strong>The free service is limited to 20 participants</strong> whereas the subscription service (for less than 20$ a month) can host up to 300 people.</p>
<p>Certainly VoIP and video streaming functionalities would have been great, in the same time their lack avoids further technical constraints necessary for the service! Although the quality of the screen share may result low (as to rapidity and image resolution), it should be enough to meet most of your needs.</p>
