The Talend certification exam ensures whether or not Data Integration professionals have the necessary skills to successfully implement business solutions using Talend Technology. Talend certified professionals are more efficient and productive in the workplace. A Talend certification provides higher morale and self confidence, besides handsome salaries and better opportunities for promotions.

In November, we have launch the Talend Certification Program. This exam is awarded to individuals who successfully complete a comprehensive online test covering all aspects of the use of Talend Open Studio.

Clients trusting a systems integrator to implement a solution or seeking to hire an individual want to be reassured that the consultants are indeed experts in the technology. Talend certification gives them this level of assurance.

A number of technical staff members from several Talend Alliance Partners have already received certification, including consultants from Altic, Dmoon, Elosi, Lunexa, Micropole Univers, Napstec, Open Wide, Systech, and Umanis. And you? Learn more on how to get certified!

Fabrice Bonan, COO and co-founder of Talend, explained: “The certification exam was developed and fine-tuned by consultants who are exposed to the many different ways our solutions are used on a daily basis. It’s not an easy exam-you need an in-depth knowledge of Talend Open Studio to pass-but it is delivered in a fair and consistent way, and guarantees that certified individuals have mastered open source data integration.”

Exam Preparation

Read the User Guide and use Talend in a real data integration project. Talend offers two 3-day courses to assist in gaining knowledge and helping you prepare for taking exam. Refer to Talend Training section for details and schedule of public classes.

Taking the Exam

The exam, which is around ½ day in duration, needs to be taken online.

The exam requires you to complete a series of tasks. TIP: Since the test is timed, you may not have the luxury to rummage around trying to figure out an answer. Be prepared before you schedule the exam. Know Talend inside and out.

To gain your certification, you must take an exam. See below an extract of the exam:

My job contains two components on a green background (startable) and I checked the option Multithread. Which of my components runs first?

What are the criteria for choosing between the ETL and the ELT modes of Talend?

I have created a variable FileNameParam which contains the name of my parameter file PARAM.txt, how can I use it in my program ready to be deployed to production?

In a tJavaRow, how do I fill the column “name”?

Benefits of Talend certifications

Talend certification provides an increased understanding of the planning, design, and maintenance of Talend products and technologies. A Talend certification provides higher morale and self confidence, besides handsome salaries and better opportunities for promotions. An Talend Certified Partners also gets invitations to Talend conferences, technical training sessions, and special events.

Attaining a Talend Open Studio Certification provides proof of your skills to create ETL and Data Integration jobs, using all the tools and features of Talend Open Studio. Talend certification can increase your earning and advancement potential. For these reasons, Talend provide an html code to embed the certification in your resume, in your social network profile or in your website:

Talend Open Studio v2.3.2 has recently been released. Please download it now and check all what it has to offer you!

How to discover the new version? To get ready-to-use Job Designs at your disposal, you need to import the Demo Project included in Talend Open Studio. Don’t know whether your most wanted component is already included in Talend Open Studio? Simply access the exhaustive list of components, and check out the real-time udpates.

The User Guide (in pdf) describes in details the interface as well as the application functionalities. The User Guide is available in French and English and is regularly updated - the last updates were published on 2008-03-19.

Compared to the last version 2.3b, the documentation is divided in two documents for more readability and clearness:

the user guide for the application

Getting started with Talend Open Studio

Designing a Business Model

Designing a Job Design

Managing jobs & projects

the guide for the components

This pdf details the major components that you can find in the Palette of Talend Open Studio (technical informations + scenario)

I advice you to read only the User Guide to get all the tools and techniques you need to fully leverage the potential of Talend Open Studio. The Components References Guide is a technical reference, don’t read it like a Bible but use it only when you need a very accurate piece of information. Why such an advice? Because the References Guide is accessible directly in the software: you only need to select a component on a Job Design and press F1! The view Help displays the technical information and the scenario. See the illustration below:

Gartner Analyst, Magic Quadrant 2008. Open source software is increasingly sharing the spotlight with traditional solutions across a great number of markets. Indeed in many areas open source has taken center stage...

The analyst Gartner published a few days ago the Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence 2008. The graph presents a global view of Gartner’s opinion about the main software vendors that should be considered by organizations seeking to develop business intelligence (BI) applications. Buyers should evaluate vendors in 2 directions:

Ability to Execute

Completeness of Vision

The interpretation of this chart is difficult. Is it the aim of Gartner? I invite you to read “Gartner BI Summit : la magie des carrés magiques“.

Observatory of Free Software published on January the “Baromètre des tendances 2007-2008 du logiciel libre 2007-2008“. I was pleased to read that the Business Intelligence is the most dynamic segment as I already mentionned it.

Why the Open Source Solutions aren’t represented in the Magic Quadrant 2008 ? Because the Gartner company thinks that the use of the Open Source is dangerous - Gartner BI Summit 2008. To read about BI actors’ opinion , please visit progilibre.com.
