In December 2009 a French publisher of school books, Delagrave, contacted Talend to ask the permission to use the company as a practical case in a book dedicated to the French BTS students (equivalent to junior college).

This school book was created for the students in Business Administration.
On page 46 we find an article about Talend and then there are questions about the understanding of the company’s business model and strategy.

Talend is part of the section “Strategic or operational management” along with large companies such as Renault, Danone or EADS

The Support Engineer are responsible for resolving problems and completing all related administrative duties.

As the main interface to the customer, The Support Engineer need to understand the local and regional infrastructure and key contacts - developers, server admin - in order to ensure taking action on the problem.

The channel is hosted on YouTube and several videos have been already broadcasted. The creation of the Talend Channel allows Talend to broadcast interesting contents, increasing the visibility of the company through a new type of information support

2010-02-08 -  How to use a MultiSchema component

This tutorial explains how to use the Multi Schema Editor. In the tutorial, you will create a job reading complex multi-structured data via a tFileInputMSDelimited component.

Set up the tFileInputMSDelimited component to open a complex multi-structured file, to read its data structures (schemas) and to use Row links to send fields as defined in the different schemas to the next job components.

In this tutorial, the multi schema delimited file is read row by row and the extracted fields are displayed on the Run Job console as defined in the Multi Schema Editor.

2010-02-22 - Learn how to catch information about your jobs’ executions
With this tutorial, you will learn:

• how to catch errors messages with the Trigger / On Component Error link
• how to use the tDie and tLogCatcher components to collect error messages

2010-03-08 - Learn how to create tables to store the monitoring information.
In this tutorial, you will create a new MySQL database for the monitoring data.

The tLogCatcher, tStatCatcher, tFlowMeterCatcher need a table each to store the data.

In this exercise, you will use the tCreateTable component to create the needed table.

Scenario:

After the declaration of a delimited file in the metadata, the video shows the design of a job to read the data included in the delimited file.

The tMap component and the Expression Builder are used to transform the data.

In a second step, a mysql connexion is declared and a join between the 2 sources is designed in the tMap.

In the last minute, the video shows the SQL Builder and the data are recorded in a mysql table.

Exam Preparation

Read the User Guide and use Talend in a real data integration project. Talend offers two 3-day courses to assist in gaining knowledge and helping you prepare for taking exam. Refer to Talend Training section for details and schedule of public classes.

Taking the Exam

The exam, which is around ½ day in duration, needs to be taken online.

The exam requires you to complete a series of tasks. TIP: Since the test is timed, you may not have the luxury to rummage around trying to figure out an answer. Be prepared before you schedule the exam. Know Talend inside and out.

To gain your certification, you must take an exam. See below an extract of the exam:

• My job contains two components on a green background (startable) and I checked the option Multithread. Which of my components runs first?
• What are the criteria for choosing between the ETL and the ELT modes of Talend?

To discover the essential knowledge, Talend Open Studio documentation is split into two guides:

• The User Guide provide general use information and describe the Graphical Interface User

To turn theory into practice, Talend propose several resources :

This 3 resources are independent, the examples files are not common and the use cases are not the same.

To have ready-to-use Job Designs at your disposal, import the Demo Project include in Talend Open Studio.

In this release, the demo project are updated.

How to import the Demo Project?

Simply follow the steps below:

• Launch Talend Open Studio
• In the login window, click on Manage and click on Demo
• Choose Java or Perl Demo Project
• Click on Finish to complete the operation
• Choose the TALENDDEMOJAVA or TALENDDEMOPERL on the “Existing” list
• Click on Open

How to install the example files?

In the view Repository, open the node Job Designs and Contexts:

• The default folder used to store the example files is “C// “. To change this value, let’s double click on globalContext (node Contexts), Next and let’s go in the panel Value as Tree to change the value of the var “defaultDir”
• Open the job named beforeRunJobs and execute it to install the example files

Additional setting: Open the Metadata/Db Connections/demoMysql and change the settings to establish the connection with your database.

How to take advantage of the Demo Project?

Open each Job Design and press F6 to run the job. If you wan’t some help about a component, select it and press F1. In the view Run Job, 2 features are available: Traces and Statistics.
