But one thing to look forward to is… our annual SKATE CHALLENGE EVENT !

DATE/DAY: 4TH FEBRUARY 2012 (SATURDAY)
VENUE: NUS Campus ( Multi-Purpose Courts 14 and 15)
TIME: 0900 to 1700

For this year's Rollerblade skate challenge, there will be 3 main events in this challenge.
1) Bladercross
2) Captain’s Ball on Skates
3) Mini games on Skates

Bladercross
a. Men relay (2 guys)
b. Women relay (2 girls)
c. Mixed relay (2 guys + 2 girls)

Bladercross is a skating obstacle course that allows you to put your skating skills to the challenge. The team with the fastest timing wins the event!

Captain Ball on Skates
7 to form a team, (3 guys + 2 girls + 2 reserves)

Mini Games
For all participants to enjoy and relax as it a non-competitive event. The mini games include games like bacteria, mother-hen, ice & fire. Thus, if you are not interested in the competitive events, you can join us in this mini games at a special price.

DISCONNECT is a magical night of fun! Filled with DJ-ing, music and lightings similar to disco, you’re invited to showcase your dance moves with skates. Come catch some great socialising and learning opportunities even if you think you don’t skate well.

This event is open to all (including public), so feel free to invite all your friends to come!

What to do during DISCONNECT?
There will be fun and interactive mass games lined up for you and win some prizes home! Snacks and drinks will be provided; not forgetting the goodie bags!

Here is the list of positions available for application:

Marketing Vice Director
Assist the Marketing Director in the following tasks:
• Secure sponsorships for events
• Prepare sponsorship proposals and reports
• Keep a lookout for discounts that will benefit the club
• Help in skate mass purchase
• Work closely with Publicity and Events Coordinator for event promotion

Publicity Vice Director
Assist the Publicity Director in the following tasks:
• Design posters and flyers for events
• Responsible for putting up posters around campus
• Design and printing of club T-shirt
• Take photos of skating sessions/events (or get from others)
• Maintain club blog and Facebook page
• Update skate club notice board

Events Vice Director
Assist the Events Director in the following tasks:
• Organizing skating workshops during the term breaks
• Organizing the annual event
• Take charge of allocation of resources and manpower for the respective events

Logistic Vice Director
Assist the Logistic Director in the following tasks:
• Maintain skating club cupboard
• Take charge of skate rental
• Prepare logistic for Club events

Secretary
• In charge of club's finances
• Organise bonding activities for club, e.g. chalets, bbq, non-skating activities.
• Schedule meeting timing for exco members
• Taking of minutes for meetings

Skating Manager
• Organize weekly skating sessions (Wednesday evenings / Saturday afternoons)
• Be the coordinator and facilitator for external competitions (Eg. send link for registration forms and get people to join)
• Organize extra training sessions for advanced/competitive members who want to hone their skills
• Explore different possibilities for different categories like speed slalom, freestyle slalom, slides & others

To all freshies entering NUS, welcome! NUS Skating Club has an exciting new event just for you!

Never skated in your life? A beginner in the sport keen to pick up more skills? Or maybe you're simply looking for a fun way to make new friends?

NUS Skating Club welcomes you to join us at our clinic, where you can learn how to skate and acquire useful skills like standing up, moving off and braking.

If you already have some basic skating experience, you may enjoy segments of our course targeted at intermediate skaters. These segmenets will focus on the finer points of skating. Intermediate skaters will also be exposed to other skating disciplines such as slalom, slides and figure skating.

Registration fees are $35 (with skate rental) and $30 (without skate rental).

We are holding two sessions per week, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, starting from the 23rd of August. This gives you more flexibility in working your skating sessions into your busy schedules!

Skate Challenge 2011

15th Janurary saw NTU, NUS, SMU, Team Freestyle and Team Seba facing each other off, competing for the Skate Challenge Trophy 2011!

The day kicked-started with Bladercross [more photos] - an event never played before in previous Skate Challenge events. An obstacle course tailored to challenge skaters - both speed and skill are essential to beat the time. Bumping or upsetting any part of the course results in a 5 or 10 (for cones) seconds penalty.

Each team was given the opportunity to do a trial run (all members at once) before the actual thing (one person at a time).

First up, the bridge. The aim is to pass though it without upsetting it's structure - and hopefully without compromising speed. All the teams managed to clear this without penalty.

Next, the steps - 3 consecutive poles. Much more difficult than the bridge, not a single team managed to clear this course without hitting the poles at least once. NUS, NTU, Seba faced a penalty of 10 seconds for hitting the poles twice. Freestyle got 15 seconds and SMU performed best at this obstacle, hitting the poles only once.

Followed by Slalom Weave, a set of tight sharp turns. The proximity of the cones makes tackling this at high speeds very difficult, resulting in a general pattern of slowing down as compared to the other obstacles. Hitting a cone here gives 10 second penalty - NUS and Freestyle felt the bite here.

Finishing off with backward skating! Relatively simple to grasp, the only thing participants need to watch out for are the starting and ending markings on the floor. Failing to skate backwards within the indicated zone results in a 5 second penalty. Again, all teams cleared this without penalty. Some skaters even chose to continue skate backwards all the way.

This event was won by Team Seba with 4 min 25 seconds, beating SMU by 5 seconds. Freestyle came in 3rd with 4 min 36 seconds, NUS 4min 55sec and NTU 5min 9sec.

After Bladercross, we have Dragon Endurance [more photos] for males, females and mix. Each team is given 5 minutes to complete as many rounds around the court as possible. Of course, if the dragon breaks it is no count. Each team may try twice. The high scores for this grueling event are...

With a special 'guest performance' from the 'All Star Team' - unfortunately there is no score for them because the dragon broke before the 5 minutes mark. Regardless of the 'falling star' (quoting our MC for the day), they performed splendidly.

The rain brought the matches to an abrupt end as everyone moved to the grand stand for shelter. At the grand stand, the lucky draw commenced with each school's president - or representative in the case of Seba and Freestyle - invited up to draw the lucky numbers. The 25 prizes ranged from water bottles, movie tickets to wheels and skate bags. The top 3 prizes were: $150, $100, $50 capital land vouchers respectively. Congratulations to all the winners!

This year, the trophy was won by NUS, cheers!

The event was wrapped up with a photo taking session of everyone present. Our brave camera man walked bare foot into the mud and thunderstorm armed with an umbrella to take the photo for us.

WHEN? 14th August 2010

WHERE? NUS Multipurpose courts

Saturday morning, happy people happy faces! All prepared for this event! The event started as early as 9am, with all the registration, collection of skates and guards plus, getting-to-know-you sessions. Then, we proceeded over to the multipurpose courts, where everyone put on their guards and skates. Important tip: Safety comes first, be "guarded" at all times!

Once again, our Skating Manager, Mr Isaac conducted the lessons for the beginners. From safety rules, to v shapes, duck walks, heel brakes, to stride 1... stride 2....our teacher for the day has demostrated and guided them very well. Every 4 students were attached to one mentor, who gave them tips and further improved their skills.

Practice sessions continued all the way until about 11.30am, where thereafter, everyone were told to have a short game before going for lunch. It was a simple game of shuttle run on skates.And whats for lunch? Adam's Road Famous Nasi Lemak! :):)

SECOND PART OF THE DAY:

We were very honoured to have invited invited Team SEBA over for a short performance and woah! Look at the photos taken below and you will know how good these skaters are! Look at how synchronized they are!

Unfortunately, it started to drizzle and for the safety for all skaters, we got all skaters to move to the grandstand while waiting for the rain to stop. In the midst of waiting, Longwen provided all of us with a good introduction and understanding of the skates, with the help of our events director, Wen Qi, and even explained the misconception between roller blading and inline skating.

Thereafter, we had some orientation games. Of course with orientation games come some forfeit. YES, Mr Yuming and Eunice Lim were told to borrow the soccerball to.....I don't know man.... hahahhaa... oh well, hope they enjoyed, at least its not some ridiculous forfeit right?

At about 4 pm, the rain finally stopped and all stations were ready! Don't be amazed, the winning team walked away with free skates individually! For those who did not turn up, and are interested as to what the 5 stations are, the photos below will probably provide a good illustration. There are 5 stations in total, and the TIME TAKEN TO COMPLETE WAS CRUCIAL.

1) "Act Out" your movie title

2) Pingpong Ball

3) Turn around the hockey stick

4) Hockey Shot

5) Weave around the cones, blow a balloon and burst it!

The main purpose of these 5 stations is to allow all skaters to practice and use what they have learnt, and of cuz, to have some fun!

The whole event ended at about 5.30pm. Before we left, our President, Mr Angus, gave his thank you speech. Once again, NUSSC hopes that all of you who have attended had a great time, and thank you guys for participating in this event because, without you guys, this event wouldn't be such a success! :)

NUS Sports Camp 2010

Organized by NUS Students’ Sport Club, this year's Sports Camp was held at Kallang, directly in front of Singapore indoor stadium and interestingly enough, at the carpark!

Some may wonder, carpark? YES, all skating activities that day were held within the carpark! SO…..Batch by batch, the different groups atttackkkked our station. And, oh the day was on a Tuesday, the 29^th of June.

At each time, two groups will come together, whereby after getting them to put on the skates and guards, we split them into two groups, the “goods ones” and the “better ones”. Well, in simplified terms, ayah actually the “beginners” and the “intermediates” hahahah!

Isaac was the mentor for the beginners for the day, accompanied by some of us, like Angus, Wenqi, Yuming, Zen,Liren and myself (Karen). Basic skills were taught, like how to move on skates, how to stop, and importantly, is to get them to get use to the skates cuz there are some that has never been on skates before!

On the other hand, Mr Jason with Yingying, and Mr Daniel Peng took good care of the intermediates. Tree, squirrel, hunter game was the hottest game on that sunny day, though some had problems shifting positions around with their skates on, BUT, everyone had fun! Look at those lovely smiles on them!

Some forfeit that was suggested for these two participants; so intimateee hahah

Mr Angus was the overall in charge for the day, and woah, he is ALWAYS BUSY running everywhere, and helping the freshies out! Hahahha! go NUS skating club facebook for more photos okay!!!!

Feeling proud is our logistics manager right here, Zen Lim, with all his skates all lined up, ready to be delivered back to the school.

All of us were really tired at the end of day; nevertheless , still reserved a bit of the energy for photo taking sessions! This event has been a success not because of just us , but also the participants, so thank you everybody! :) photos time again!! hiao man. oh chongren if i can tag you in blogger, i sure tag u in the air too. :):):)

Can you believe it?
It's been a year since last year's Safra National Runway Skating. I'm here again to be a guest blogger for this event again this year. *claps*

Today's great. We have lovely weather, and the turnout was fantastic too.
Here is a photo of us before the skate:

The scenery was magnificent. What's more to ask for with such great company to skate with? :)
Congratulations to all of us who completed the 15km leisure skate! Especially those who are taking part for the first time. Great job! :D

Do take part in this event again next year! It's an annual event not to be missed!

NUSSC Presidential Elections

Hello everyone!

It's out! ANGUS will be the incoming president of NUSSC! :) if you don't know who he is, you can check out his Facebook profile at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=778631531&ref=mf. Add him as a friend and get to know him better!

Here are some details about the events that happened during today's elections.

Chongren's handover speech:
He mentioned that he wanted the election early this time so that the new president can understudy him to ensure a smoother passing over process. He wished Angus all the best.

Angus' thank you speech:
He thanked everyone for their support and assured that he would bring the club to greater heights.

Let's look forward to Angus leading NUSSC! =D

Skating session at Sembawang! (:

Hello!!!

It's been long since I last wrote. I'm finally free to go for skating on Saturday since a long long time...And it's finally held at some place nearer to home (: but apparently the turn out wasn't good, so I guess it won't be held anywhere north anymore :(

Anyway, we skated at the very very big multi-storey car park because the weather was too hot to skate at the big open air courts in Sembawang.

Here's a look at how huge the car park is...

You can skate anyhow you like without worrying too much about falling down! So good! (:

We could practise everything we wanted to practise coz the place is so huge, including my heel brake. Yes, heel brake, I'm still trying to master it haha. Hmm and trying parallel turn now, as Angus said, need to level up! But somehow, my parallel turns 9 out of 10 will end up as A frame turns... tsk. Need to practise more.

Anyway, after some time, we got a little bored. I don't know whose idea it is, but they decided to play catching!!! Since the car park is so huge, it's a good place to play catching hahaha.

Oh, I took a video too. There was a debate on which style of catching to play haha.

Okay in the end we couldn't decide so we headed off to urban!!! Destination was KOI BUBBLE TEA at Ang Mo Kio!

Exciting man, it was my first attempt urban-ing, and I was quite scared, unlike Cynthia who was much more confident than me haha although it's also her first time going urban. Mainly because I don't think I can survive the obstacle course hahaha. There were drain covers, bulges here and there, funny steps that will appear out of no where...argh, luckily there wasn't pressure to skate fast or anything. I would have just given up. Haha, thanks everyone for trying to help! I wouldn't have survived free from injuries (note: no injuries doesn't mean no fall! =x) home without your help (: oh must thank my guards too haha.

Was quite tired when we were near my home. And they wanted to accompany me to the bus stop so I can change back to my slippers and walk home. Haha, apparently the ground was seriously extremely skates-unfriendly! I decided to just sit down on the road and change hahaha.

Okay, great skating adventure today! (: my feet need a good rest...so painful after wearing skates for so long...

Aim

1	This paper seeks to update NUS Students’ Sports Club on the Super Short Shorts/Bikini Day 2010 which is taking place on 17^th February 2010 from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at NUS SRC Multipurpose Courts 14 & 15.

Background

This special event is held for NUS Skating Club members to practice how to skate proficiently in different attires.

Objectives of Event (should be concrete and relate to core business)

SKATE CHALLENGE 2010

Skate Challenge 2010 has been a successful first for NUSSC! (:

Preparations for the event started since last year. From the sourcing of sponsors, planning of events rules and regulations, inviting participants to sign up,...etc. And we are glad that our long awaited event has been a success thanks to everyone!

Some of us stayed overnight the day before to prepare for the event. While some of us came 6am the next morning to prepare for the event. Haha, so if you were wondering why we all looked so tired, that's the answer (:

Anyway, registration for the event started officially at 9am and participants from NP, SP, NTU and SMU started coming in with their skates. After all participants are done with their final preparations for the event, our emcee, Shuyu started the trials for our first event--the 4-men male dragon!

The race was an exciting one as the teams came in very close to each other, with timing differences of just a few seconds!

The next event for the day was the 4-women female dragon, which was initially a walkover for the NUS girls. After their race, the girls from NTU and SMU decided to form a combined team to compete in the event as well!

But the NUS girls still managed to come in first for the event! Congrats, girls! (:

Next up was the 8-men/women/mixed dragons!!!

This was one of the more challenging events for the day as it wasn't easy to control such a long dragon! There were a few dragons that were disqualified coz of that...

Next up was the 8-men mixed dragon!

The highlight of skate challenge--Captain's Ball on SKATES was up next! It's basically just and improvised version of captain's ball that was played on skates. It was an exciting competition as it was a test of team spirit, skating techniques and speed! I shall let the pictures do the story-telling...

Thanks Kahming for being the commentator for captain's ball on skates, you definitely made the event a much more entertaining one! (:

We're back in action again after a long hiatus from exams! WOOHOO!

There are some exciting updates that we wanna tell all of you!

NUS Skating Club's inaugural annual event--SKATE CHALLENGE 2010 will be held on 16 January 2010!

Skating session at ECP and Halloween Skating~!

Hello!

It's been one week since my dramatic fall haha. I still have a slope phobia but was forced to go down a few slopes at ECP from Macdonalds to the white tower where we skated for a while. Although I didn't fall while on the slopes, but there's still this phobia of slopes in me >.<

Okay anyway, Saturday was a bad day for me :( It wasn't a good day to be skating outdoors haha. It started raining when I was about to skate back to Macdonalds! (okay maybe that's good coz i avoided the scary slope) But then again, it was really a sad scene. While i was taking off my skates at a pavillion near by, there were kids singing "rain rain go away, come again another day...". awwww. So i took out my skates and started walking in the rain with an umbrella in ECP towards the underpass near the skate park (thinking that there will be a bus stop opposite). Just as I happily thought that I'm closer to home, reality struck! There was no bus stop in sight at all! haha worse still, the roads were expressway kind where no reasonable taxi will stop. So i walked and walked in the heavy rain. Was totally stranded for at least 15 minutes before I got a taxi to the airport and home finally! phew...long day.

Anyway, the highlight of the day was supposed to be the HALLOWEEN SKATE session in town, which some of our members went! It was definitely an eerie but fun night! (:
