NUS Sports Camp 2010

Organized by NUS Students’ Sport Club, this year's Sports Camp was held at Kallang, directly in front of Singapore indoor stadium and interestingly enough, at the carpark!

Some may wonder, carpark? YES, all skating activities that day were held within the carpark! SO…..Batch by batch, the different groups atttackkkked our station. And, oh the day was on a Tuesday, the 29^th of June.

At each time, two groups will come together, whereby after getting them to put on the skates and guards, we split them into two groups, the “goods ones” and the “better ones”. Well, in simplified terms, ayah actually the “beginners” and the “intermediates” hahahah!

Isaac was the mentor for the beginners for the day, accompanied by some of us, like Angus, Wenqi, Yuming, Zen,Liren and myself (Karen). Basic skills were taught, like how to move on skates, how to stop, and importantly, is to get them to get use to the skates cuz there are some that has never been on skates before!

On the other hand, Mr Jason with Yingying, and Mr Daniel Peng took good care of the intermediates. Tree, squirrel, hunter game was the hottest game on that sunny day, though some had problems shifting positions around with their skates on, BUT, everyone had fun! Look at those lovely smiles on them!

Some forfeit that was suggested for these two participants; so intimateee hahah

Mr Angus was the overall in charge for the day, and woah, he is ALWAYS BUSY running everywhere, and helping the freshies out! Hahahha! go NUS skating club facebook for more photos okay!!!!

Feeling proud is our logistics manager right here, Zen Lim, with all his skates all lined up, ready to be delivered back to the school.

All of us were really tired at the end of day; nevertheless , still reserved a bit of the energy for photo taking sessions! This event has been a success not because of just us , but also the participants, so thank you everybody! :) photos time again!! hiao man. oh chongren if i can tag you in blogger, i sure tag u in the air too. :):):)

Runway Skating 2010

Can you believe it?
It's been a year since last year's Safra National Runway Skating. I'm here again to be a guest blogger for this event again this year. *claps*

Today's great. We have lovely weather, and the turnout was fantastic too.

The scenery was magnificent. What's more to ask for with such great company to skate with? :)
Congratulations to all of us who completed the 15km leisure skate! Especially those who are taking part for the first time. Great job! :D

Chongren's handover speech:
He mentioned that he wanted the election early this time so that the new president can understudy him to ensure a smoother passing over process. He wished Angus all the best.

He thanked everyone for their support and assured that he would bring the club to greater heights.

Skating session at Sembawang! (:

Hello!!!

It's been long since I last wrote. I'm finally free to go for skating on Saturday since a long long time...And it's finally held at some place nearer to home (: but apparently the turn out wasn't good, so I guess it won't be held anywhere north anymore :(

Anyway, we skated at the very very big multi-storey car park because the weather was too hot to skate at the big open air courts in Sembawang.

Here's a look at how huge the car park is...

You can skate anyhow you like without worrying too much about falling down! So good! (:

We could practise everything we wanted to practise coz the place is so huge, including my heel brake. Yes, heel brake, I'm still trying to master it haha. Hmm and trying parallel turn now, as Angus said, need to level up! But somehow, my parallel turns 9 out of 10 will end up as A frame turns... tsk. Need to practise more.

Anyway, after some time, we got a little bored. I don't know whose idea it is, but they decided to play catching!!! Since the car park is so huge, it's a good place to play catching hahaha.

Oh, I took a video too. There was a debate on which style of catching to play haha.

Okay in the end we couldn't decide so we headed off to urban!!! Destination was KOI BUBBLE TEA at Ang Mo Kio!

Exciting man, it was my first attempt urban-ing, and I was quite scared, unlike Cynthia who was much more confident than me haha although it's also her first time going urban. Mainly because I don't think I can survive the obstacle course hahaha. There were drain covers, bulges here and there, funny steps that will appear out of no where...argh, luckily there wasn't pressure to skate fast or anything. I would have just given up. Haha, thanks everyone for trying to help! I wouldn't have survived free from injuries (note: no injuries doesn't mean no fall! =x) home without your help (: oh must thank my guards too haha.

Was quite tired when we were near my home. And they wanted to accompany me to the bus stop so I can change back to my slippers and walk home. Haha, apparently the ground was seriously extremely skates-unfriendly! I decided to just sit down on the road and change hahaha.

Okay, great skating adventure today! (: my feet need a good rest...so painful after wearing skates for so long...

SKATE CHALLENGE 2010

Skate Challenge 2010 has been a successful first for NUSSC! (:

Preparations for the event started since last year. From the sourcing of sponsors, planning of events rules and regulations, inviting participants to sign up,...etc. And we are glad that our long awaited event has been a success thanks to everyone!

Some of us stayed overnight the day before to prepare for the event. While some of us came 6am the next morning to prepare for the event. Haha, so if you were wondering why we all looked so tired, that's the answer (:

Anyway, registration for the event started officially at 9am and participants from NP, SP, NTU and SMU started coming in with their skates. After all participants are done with their final preparations for the event, our emcee, Shuyu started the trials for our first event--the 4-men male dragon!

The race was an exciting one as the teams came in very close to each other, with timing differences of just a few seconds!

The next event for the day was the 4-women female dragon, which was initially a walkover for the NUS girls. After their race, the girls from NTU and SMU decided to form a combined team to compete in the event as well!

The highlight of skate challenge--Captain's Ball on SKATES was up next! It's basically just and improvised version of captain's ball that was played on skates. It was an exciting competition as it was a test of team spirit, skating techniques and speed! I shall let the pictures do the story-telling...

Skating session at ECP and Halloween Skating~!

Hello!

It's been one week since my dramatic fall haha. I still have a slope phobia but was forced to go down a few slopes at ECP from Macdonalds to the white tower where we skated for a while. Although I didn't fall while on the slopes, but there's still this phobia of slopes in me >.<

Okay anyway, Saturday was a bad day for me :( It wasn't a good day to be skating outdoors haha. It started raining when I was about to skate back to Macdonalds! (okay maybe that's good coz i avoided the scary slope) But then again, it was really a sad scene. While i was taking off my skates at a pavillion near by, there were kids singing "rain rain go away, come again another day...". awwww. So i took out my skates and started walking in the rain with an umbrella in ECP towards the underpass near the skate park (thinking that there will be a bus stop opposite). Just as I happily thought that I'm closer to home, reality struck! There was no bus stop in sight at all! haha worse still, the roads were expressway kind where no reasonable taxi will stop. So i walked and walked in the heavy rain. Was totally stranded for at least 15 minutes before I got a taxi to the airport and home finally! phew...long day.

Anyway, the highlight of the day was supposed to be the HALLOWEEN SKATE session in town, which some of our members went! It was definitely an eerie but fun night! (:

I think I need a full suit of metal armour before I master the proper techniques of heel brake or any other good enough for me to stop brake...

After three vaccinations at the clinic this afternoon, I wasn't expecting anything more painful than the tetanus jab for the day. But as it turns out, there's a surprise laid out for me today. Just as skating session was about to end and I went up and down the slope in LKCSB the nth time, I had to lose my balance and fell flat on the ground as I couldn't balance properly -.-" ouch. I think I said,"this is worse than the jabs I took in the afternoon" after falling. But it's better now, my jabs are becoming more painful :(

Haha, there was an instant feeling of defeat. And yes, I still can't apply my heel brakes steadily after all these weeks of practise. I need more practices =x Had no proper camera, shall show you all the slope if I have a chance next time (: I shall conquer it hahaha.

Skating Workshop!

Hello everyone! It's me again!
It's a long time since I last blogged,glad to be blogging again! (:
(that's why this is gonna be a long one =p)

Part One of today's session! (must be in my favourite colour)
Today's skating session was a mini workshop conducted by NUS Skating Club's founder, Longwen. It was a session that taught us how to teach skating, which I found very useful! I learned a lot from this course and benefited a lot, as I learned about the right techniques needed to skate properly, especially as a beginner.

Longwen's mini workshop was modeled after the ICP, which is the Inline Certification Program. There were many useful skills that he taught, which I didn't know about prior to this session and they helped me to feel less afraid of trying out new techniques as I know how they are supposed to look like.

Some techniques that we've learned today include how to fall and get up, which is a very important first step that I didn't get to learn initially. Longwen said that learning how to fall will give beginners more confidence to take the first baby step in learning how to move. I think that's really true as I was really afraid to gain speed when I first started learning because I didn't know how to fall and was afraid to fall on the back =/ that mental obstacle somehow limited my progress in learning how to skate.

I'm still at the stage of learning how to stop with the heel brake haha. But I'm happy to say that it's a very zai break! Longwen's demonstration was so good that we could hear the sound of the break being applied...eeekkkkkkkkk! Sadly, I need more practise to reach that level, haha, I'm still at the feather hits the ground stage >.< yet. I will do them well one day!

It was a really fruitful session for me as I learned a lot of interesting things about how to skate properly in just a 2 hours crash course! I'm sure there will be much more that can be learned if there were more time...So, the conclusion is, do come join us on Wednesday skating sessions and you may get to catch LONGWEN in action and learn more about skating from him! :D

Part Two of today's entry--An exclusive interview with NUSSC's very own Ms Hot Bod!

NUSSC: We've all read your interview and know that you eat 4 meals a day. What do you normally eat for your 4 meals? How do you maintain your Hot Bod while having limited food choices in school?
Shuyu: It's always bread for breakfast, followed by lunch in school (NUSSC doesn't know the secrets behind how she maintains her Hot Bod by limited food choices in school), a light snack and then dinner. No supper for me!

NUSSC (continues to probe deeper to get more tips for our readers): How do you maintain your Hot Bod with so many unhealthy food choices in school?
Shuyu: I skate weekly for at least three hours! It really helps!

(PS: Look how cheerful & attractive our Ms Hot Bod smile is. Ahem. So do come for our skating sessions if you wanna have more chances of interacting with her! (: )

Skating the Old school way

This week, the skating session is at the eastern part of Singapore. If you count from Pioneer station, it is roughly 27 mrt stations away to reach Tampines~ You can sit back and enjoy the scene from the west to the east, take out a book to mug, listen to your mp3 playlist and during the underground stations, take a nap in between :) After you've finish all these...Tada~ you have reach Tampines!

Well, the evil weatherman had cast rain all over Singapore today. Not just for only short period, but for the whole of today!! (%~+$&_|_%^**) The raining season is starting to haunt us again. But fear not, we'll always have backup program.

Still, I have to say enthusiastic skaters do turn up for today skating session despite of the bad weather. Although the place we skate is not the usual kind of place we usually hang out, a rather old school hang out place : Void Deck! How often do you hang out at void deck these days? It's a very much different kind of experience ;) Just take a look at the video below~

Lastly, a preview of our next week activity : Our skating manager had promised the location won't be in the East anymore! (-.^)v There will be fun and games throughout our Urban skating. (*but of course you need to know at least how to skate ya~) =D

26th Sept Skate at Bishan Bowl

To cut a long story short, it is important to note that the Bishan Bowl is NOT, NOT, NOT at the Bishan Park. It is at the Harmony Park which is opposite Raffles Institute. I did however get to trek about Bishan for about an hour plus.

This was by far my closest to feeling like an NSF man. With a 5kg bag and my skates for a rifle…

Thankfully, it was worth it, or so I feel.

I mean, if you think aggressive inline is exciting, you would like this place, I think, albeit a little boring, but good for a starting point I guess. I would have never discovered this place if not for Nussc (hehehe, publicity act). It is damn fun!! Discounting the fact that I got to bring away with me a scar slightly bigger than the size of my palm, on the right side of my ass because I fell on the first attempt… It makes my leg look like a chicken with all the feather plucked out; the raw red skin with white polky dots. I know, EWW. Anyone else share my sentiments???

So anyway, first attempt, I stood there for like about two decades, feeling my legs shiver in my blades and watching a lil boy chiong down. It didn't look as scary till you're standing there and start over-analyzing and over-intellectualizing everything. Worrying about everything being the "adults" that we are. So I was like heck, I’m gonna fall anyway, and true enough, I did. But the second try, I managed to get it, and subsequently it was just fun jumping in to skate to and fro just for cheap thrills. At the end of the day, it's just about doing it, like, you know, not be scared and just try it.

So before I keep going on about me, point is, it’s like this huge ass bowl and you just drop down and go at the speed of light and you either fall or feel like, er, you’re having fun. Oh, and some SMU skaters were there who we managed to learn some stuff from and all. Yeaah.

Okay, main gist:

1. For future sessions, it is important to always check out directions.. tip for me and you :)

2. We do other stuff than just blading around...

3. Falling is okay but wearing longer pants would half-save you

4. Blame yourself if you weren't there!

Skating session at ECP and DINNER AT BEDOK! :D

Hello!

It's me again! As you can tell from the entry title, this entry is not only about our skating session today =p

Today's ECP session was scary for me because I was trying to learn how to heel brake down a slope. The first few attempts weren't as bad at more gentle slopes, but when I was asked to try a steeper slope I was overwhelmed by the speed and momentum i gathered and fell :( But come to think of it, it's just part and parcel of learning how to skate and I learn from my mistakes :)

Some of them tried out a "New Skating Experience" on the wave board (correct me if I am wrong) too. Here are some pictures:

After that, we went to Bedok for DINNER :D yum yum. There was a record breaking turn out of 20 over skaters today for dinner! Yay!

We occupied 5 tables and brought a considerable amount of sales for the hawker centre today. (okay maybe a few stalls only)

Nevertheless, this shows that NUSSC not only skate together, we eat together too! :D

Skating session at Esplanade underground last Saturday

Hello! :D

It was the first time I skated at the Esplanade area,which I thought was a pretty cool experience (since it's only my fourth skating session). I felt excited to be skating around the pros :)

I had fun watching the seniors practise their stunts and learning new stuff too! Thanks seniors for teaching me!

The more advanced skaters went urban too! It sounds super exciting, I wanna try it one day too hehe.

I'm pleased to inform you that we have several EXCO positions opened for application.

Here is the list of positions available for application:

Marketing Vice Director (1 slot)

All committee members are expected to turn up for skating sessions. No prior skating experience is needed. As long as you are a current NUS student, you are eligible to apply.

Keep a lookout for discounts that will benefit the club

Events Vice Director

Assist the Events Director in the following tasks:

Organizing skating workshops during the term breaks
Organizing the annual event
Take charge of allocation of resources and manpower for the respective events

Logistic Manager

In charge of skates rentals (rent/collection of skates)
Maintain storage cupboards
Track logistic status of the club (includes skates, equipment, materials, etc)
Handle logistics during events (Skating workshop, annual event, etc)

Skating Manager

Organize weekly skating sessions (Wednesday evenings / Saturday afternoons)
Be the coordinator and facilitator for external competitions (Eg. send link for registration forms and get people to join)
Organize extra training sessions for advanced/competitive members who want to hone their skills
Explore different possibilities for different categories like speed slalom, freestyle slalom, slides & others

Here's what you need to do to join the committee:
Download a copy of the EXCO application form from http://nussc.skate.sg/exco.pdf
Print the EXCO application form and fill it up
Bring it along with you when you join us at our next skating session and submit it to me or any other committee members
Take note that EXCO application is opened to all NUS students, not just year ones.

NUS Skating Club Welcome Tea

Time: 11am-2pm
Venue: Yusof Ishak House Function Room 3 (beside the Japanese restaurant, above Cheers)
Lunch buffet will be provided after the welcome tea.

At the welcome tea, we will tell you more about our club, what we do, the events we organise and the services we provide. Note that you do not have to be a good skater to join us. We can make you a good skater, as long as you have the interest and the will to learn.

Come join us for a full-day course with exciting games and attractive prizes to be won.

National Runway Skating

Yeah the annual National Runway Cycling & Skating at Paya Lebar Air Base organised by Safra is here again! :D

It was my first time participating in this event so I was pretty excited. Skaters from our club as well as NTU and SMU were here too. Most of our club members participated in the 15km Leisure route. (I'm sure it was a piece of cake for most us! hahaha! =P) I saw little kids skating the 6km Leisure route with their family too. (How cute!)

The scenary was beautiful and the weather was great with the clouds to shield us from the hot sun. So overall I would say the day went pretty smoothly. :)

Do sign up next year if you have missed it this time round.

It's something worth experiencing! :)

NTU Inline Hockey Camp

A bunch of us went for the inline hockey camp organised by NTU from 6-7 June. I have to say it was DAMN FUN! We made a lot of friends from both NTU and SMU skating clubs. These new friends made the camp even more enjoyable. It's a pity that a lot of the NUS skaters are unable to join us for this camp. How I wish you guys were there with us.

This Saturday's Skating Session (13 June 2009)

This Saturday's skating session will be slightly different. We will be joining SMU to skate from ECP to Pasir Ris. The route will be ECP - Changi Coastal - Changi Beach - Loyang - Pasir Ris.

Venue: Meet outside Kitrunners @ East Coast Park (Beside Burger King)

Time: 12pm

It would be a whole afternoon of exploration, challenges and discovery!

Skating Session @ Bishan Harmony Park

On 30 May, we had our skating session at a new place: Bishan Harmony Park. It's a stone's throw away from Bishan MRT. For directions on how to get there from Bishan MRT, refer to the following link: http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/sg/singapore/745124278629914547

There's a nice flat ground there for slalom and technique training, ramps and slops for agro skaters. The highlight of the place is the huge bowl. Below is a video of Luke conquering the bowl. Do not be deceived by the optical illusion of the video, it's much much scarier when you're actually there.
