A photo story on Cuba in transition anchored the portfolio of Tomás Munita who has been named the Photojournalist of the Year for large markets in the 2017 Best of Photojournalism competition sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association. Jessica Phelps, a staffer at the Newark Advocate in Ohio, won the same title for smaller markets, also with a portfolio built around strong photo stories.

Mannie Garcia Wins Settlement in Police Lawsuit

Photojournalist Mannie Garcia has won a $45,000 settlement in a civil rights lawsuit resulting from his unlawful arrest by Montgomery County police in Maryland in 2011.

Scott Jensen Appointed to NPPA Board

(ATHENS, GA) Scott Jensen, news content manager for KING-TV in Seattle, Washington, has been appointed to the National Press Photographers Association board of directors by NPPA President Melissa Lyttle.

Jensen will serve a one-year term in 2017 as one of three appointed board members. Danese Kenon and Chelsea Matiash are the other two board members appointed by Lyttle. In addition, there are six elected members on the NPPA board of directors and six officers who make up the executive committee.

Ruling Supports Right to Record Law Enforcement in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi

The right to record police in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi is now a clearly established First Amendment right after an opinion was issued on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017 in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The case arose from an incident in Ft. Worth in which a man, Phillip Turner, was videotaping a police station from a public sidewalk, across the street from the station.

ATHENS, GA (February 7, 2017) - Tom Burton has been named Editor for News Photographer magazine, as well as the National Press Photographers Association’s website, www.nppa.org, following the retirement of News Photographer’s inimitable editor Donald Winslow at the end of 2016. NPPA executive director Akili-Casundria Ramsess announced this morning from NPPA’s headquarters at the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia in Athens.

Military Photographer of the Year Judging Format Changes With New Rules

Rule changes for the Military Photographer of the Year contest are requiring photographers to win their service branch top honors before being considered for the top overall prize. 

Previously, the top-level competition allowed military photographers to enter directly even if their portfolios had not won at the base, command or service levels. Now, entries have to place in the top three at the lower levels to move on.
