Park behind the school, and walk uphill to the left side of the parking lot.  Look for the gravel path (on the opposite side of the fence of the roller hockey rink).  The path is a short walk through the woods to our fields.

Last night we conducted the Season 9 Captains’ Meeting.  8 people were in attendance representing 7 teams.  We voted on several issues, here is the vital information for this season!

NOVAFFL CAPTAINS MEETING MINUTES

Teams represented at meeting: (7) Get Some, Loose Cannons, No Namers, Syndicate, Foxchase, Rams, Jabroneys.

S9: Begins play Saturday, September 11^th, 8:30a.m. 

FIELDS: We are returning to last season’s fields behind Francis C. Hammond MS.

FIELD HOTLINE: Has changed to 703-746-5596

PLAY: Will be an 8 week regular season, with playoffs and championship occurring in 1 day on the 9th week of play.  A buffer will be built into the schedule for rain cancellations.  Cancelled games will be moved to the end of the schedule.  Example: If week 2 is cancelled because of rain, week 2 games will be moved to the end of the schedule, and week 3 games will be played according to the original week 3 schedule.

CHANGE: We have been given an additional hour at no charge.  If necessary, cancelled games early in the schedule might be added onto the last hour of play in later weeks.  For example, if we experience rain cancellation weeks 1-3, week 2 or 3′s games might be added into the extra hour of play in week 7 or 8, allowing all games to be made up.

Team Dues: Because of an unalterable increase in field cost (discovered late this week), and because NoVAFFL spent more than it received last season, and because NoVAFFL is trying to improve the quality of the league, it was discussed, voted upon, and unanimously agreed that the cost of the league this season for returning teams shall be $500. (FYI – For a 20 man roster, this is $25 per player.  For a 15 man roster, this is $35 per player).

This will allow us to:

a) Play on the fields we’ve been guaranteed

b) Play the same amount of games

c) Pay the refs in the same manner as last season, as well as equip the refs with whistles, shirts, and stopwatches.

d) Purchase minor equipment needed (a few more flags for example – guaranteeing every player will have flags)

e) Produce a few little, inexpensive nice extras for players

f) Cushion our account a little bit for potential needs in the future

Due Date: The due date for returning teams to pay before their spot could potentially be given to another team is  September 7th.

Rule Changes: Intentional Grounding can only be called if the quarterback is under pressure, and the throw does not pass the line of scrimmage.  We have decided the quarterback does not have to be “in the pocket” and have decided not to consider if a WR was near the attempted pass under the consideration that any line-man could potentially be eligible in our league.  With the center being potentially eligible, we felt this negated the necessity of having a WR near the pass.   So, the only way Intentional Grounding will be called is if the QB fails to pass beyond the line of scrimmage.

If Intentional Grounding is called, it will be a 5 yard penalty with the loss of the down.

Divisional Play & Playoffs

Divisional play will be utilized this season, simply for the fun of creating some rivalries, and organization.  However, the divisions will not affect the playoffs.  The playoff teams will be seeded and determined as follows.

Top 2 teams (regardless of division) will receive first round byes.

Top 6 teams (regardless of division) will be permitted into the playoffs.

Improving the league next season:

This season will be a 10 team league, but over the course of this season we will begin to promote, and plan, and prepare for at least a 12 team season in 2011

Where's the pizza?

The Captain’s Meeting for Season 9 will be Thursday, August 26th, 7pm.  This is for captains of returning teams, and captains of potential new teams.

Captains of returning teams may turn in their payment of $425 at this time (but this is not the deadline).

We will hand out team packets, discuss any changes and pertinent information, and adress questions and concerns.

LOCATION: Foxchase Media Center – 320 N. Jordan St, Alexandria, VA 22304

DIRECTIONS: From 395, exit Duke St. east.  Turn LEFT on N. Jordan St (immediately after Shops of Foxchase which has a Wachovia by the street).  After turning LEFT on N. Jordan St, you will cross an intersection at Raleigh.  Then before you reach the stoplight at Taney Ave, you will see a building on your left with a long blue awning.  This is the location of the meeting.  Park along either N. Jordan St or Taney Ave.  Do not park in the parking lots that branch off of the streets.

Once the captains’ meeting has concluded, we’ll be able to release more information about Season 9 to the general public.

The other exciting game was between 7pt Spread and Syndicate in the 12.30 time slot. 7pt was given an early lead with a pick 6 on the first play from scrimmage by Toney Mooney and the Syndicate were forced to chase the rest of the game. Finally with about 2:00 left in the game, the Syndicate defense was able to stop 7pt and get the ball back at their own 15yrd line. Syndicate put together a steady 4-5 play drive and were able to set up a 10yrd TD reception by the rookie, DaShawn, with about 20 seconds to go and 7pt were unable to pull out a miracle at the end.

Force and Get Some both continued their early season domination by again going 2-0 for the week and now stand at 7-1 overall. They will not face off for another 2 weeks but both have 1 tough matchup next week that could derail the 1 v 2 matchup.

Week 3 was by far the best week of this early season. Both teams that came into the week undefeated left with a loss and the rematch of the championship game came down to the last six seconds of regulation with the champs coming out on top.

Get Some engaged in a defensive battle with the Loose Cannons as neither team was able to score during regulation time. Even with stealing the best two weapons from Loose Cannons, Get Some was unable to mount any sort of attack on the solid defense of the Cannons. In overtime the Cannons were able to prevail and got the revenge they needed.

In overtime the Cannons were able to prevail and got the revenge they needed.

Force buried 7pt Spread and came into their second game of the season feeling good as they matched up vs the hated Syndicate. The Force came in boasting the confidence of a championship team, but were left with many questions to answer as they were unable to manage much of a fight vs the Syndicate. 3 or 4 turnovers stopped a few drives and Syndicate was able to take advantage of them and put the game out of reach, in turn, giving the Force the first loss of the season.

The rematch of last seasons championship game the Hawks and Syndicate did not disappoint as it came down to the last 6 seconds of the game to decide a winner and once again Syndicate were held to just 1 touchdown. It was very much a duplicate of the championship game as the Hawks solid defense won the game for them and the Syndicate were unable to find any sort of rythem on offense. The Hawks came into the game a bit short handed and still managed to win the game with two different quarterbacks at the helm in place of the missing starter Ott.

In the event that the field is closed all NovaFFL games will be canceled and rescheduled if possible.
