The AAAA record has the task to point a domain name to its IPv6 address. When somebody writes down the domain, a query will go search for AAAA or A record. From one of them, the person will get the IP address of the domain.

Here you can find an example of an AAAA record.

The AAAA record looks very similar to the A record. It has the following:

• Host: the domain name
• Type: AAAA
• Points to: The IPv6 address of the domain name
• TTL: Time to live.

The only difference to the A record is the more advanced, 128bit IPv6 address.

A records and AAAA records can coexist. You can start to prepare for the future by creating AAAA records for your domain. It won’t affect your existing DNS records in any way.
