Off and Running

As the year is under way, so is the JROTC. The Batalion is 78 strong with over 30 LET 1’s.The first fundraiser has started with scratch tickets. Al uniforms are isued and the dril team is working hard for the first event at Hermon High on 17 Oct. And the National Color Guard has started to raise funds for another try at being the best in the Nation in Daytona Beach in May of next year.

Lets go Color Guard

Well here we go. The National Color Guard will host a BBQ chicken dinner on the 7th of Aug. 2009. The event will be held at the Newport American Legion Hall from 4PM till 7PM. Cost is $5.00 a Plate. Also a big bake sale will be going on at the same time same place. All funds will go towards helping the National Color Guard on the quest for a National Title in Daytona Fl. next May.

Summer Camp

What a time at camp. 9 cadets left on the 21 June to Camp Johnson, Vt. . A great time was had by all. The cadets from Nokomis led the way in all areas. Proving this Cadet Maj. Audrey Sylvester was ranked number two, with the award of Commandant award winner. Cadet Maj Nicole Pedone was ranked number 3 with the winning of the Esprit a Corps award. Other cadets that received awards was Cadet SSG Cody Thompson for the best in rope bridge, and best platoon. But now we move on for Corrina days the cadets from the JROTC received high praise for all of the work for the town. It was stated that the day would not have happened if not for the cadets. Next comes Summer fest on the 18 of July, and again cadets are in charge of the day, come by and enjoy the day. Please check out the photos on the page with more to come, from a proud 1SG.

The Nationals

Cadets took off to Daytona Beach, Florida on a quest for a National Championship on April 30, 2009. After a hard fight with over 40 teams in our Division they placed 24th in the nation. Better luck next year. Cadets that competed were, Dominic McKim, Maygan Meagher, Nicole Pedone, and Audrey Sylvester.

The Big Night

The night was April 17, 2009. As the night came and went many awards were given out. But the night went to the cadets who were promoted to lead the corps next year.

As the outgoing Commander Dominic McKim was promoted to Cadet COL. among some of the awards received by Cdt McKim, Cadet of the year, Veterans Leadership Bowl, and the Superior Cadet Award. Dominic leaves for training in the United States Army on the 31st of August this year. We wish him well.

Cdt LTC Maygan Meagher has assumed the position of Battalion Commander.

Cdt CSM Matthew Thompson assumed the position of Command Sergeant Major.

Cdt MAJ Nicole Pedone assumed the position of Battalion XO.

Cdt MAJ Audrey Sylvester assumed the position of Battalion S-3, plans and operations.

Cdt CPT Christopher Dow assumed the position of Bravo company Commander.

Cdt CPT Laura Craig assumed the position as Alpha company Commander.

And They’re Off!

As most of you may already know the Nokomis National Color Guard Team is off to the National Drill Competition in sunny Daytona Beach, Florida. The gang left early this morning at around 3:00 am for a two day van ride. I suppose they will most likely stop in North or South Carolina for some sleep and then make the push to Daytona. It looks like the competition will be held at Ocean Center Arena & Exhibit Hall. The date of competition according to the National Drill Competition website is Saturday, May 2, 2009 for the Challenge Level and Sunday & Monday, May 3 & 4, 2009 for the Masters Level.

Best of luck to the Nokomis Color Guard! I am sure more details are soon to come!

Battalion Formation- Feb 2009

On February 26, the battalion conducted its monthly formation, during the formation three awards were presented, Cadet Officer of the Month was presented to CDT 1LT Pedone, Cadet NCO of the Month was presented to CDT SSG French, and Cadet of the Month was presented to CDT PVT Colson. At the Formation two cadet were also promoted, CDT PVT Thomas and CDT PVT Bowden had both been promoted to the rank of Corporal. Congratulations to all that had received an award or promotion at the formation

Spaghetti Supper

On March 13, The National Color Guard team will be sponsoring a Spaghetti supper at the Corrina American Legion Hall. The supper is by donation only. Dinner will be served from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. All funds will be used for the Color Guard to travel to Daytona beach Florida in there quest for a National Championship. So come an enjoy a home cooked meal and help support the National Color Guard Team.

On February 26-27, the corps of cadets went on a trip to Augusta, Maine to visit Camp Keyes, the National Guard Headquarters for the State of Maine. While at the facility, cadets were offered the opportunity to use a weapons simulator, the same one that is used to train our solders.

While at the EST, cadets were shown how to properly load, charge, aim, and fire the M-16 A-3 Rifle simulator. The cadets were also given the opportunity to compete against each other for the title of TOP GUN! The EST is a weapons simulator that dose not require live fire, it is hooked to a compressed air system that supplies the weapon with a small kick back when fired at the screen.
